3 Joint Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa University of Wisconsin-Stout confers the degrees upon CONFERRING of Honorary Doctor DEGREES Joint Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Honoris Causa Dwight and Linda Davis Dwight and Linda Davis University of Wisconsin-Stout confers the degrees Doctors of Humane Letters Honoris Causa upon Dwight and Linda Davis who have dedicated their lives to improving the communities where they have lived, the companies with which they have been associated and all forms of education across Wisconsin. You have given generously of your time, advice, and financial resources to advance the mission of UW-Stout, which will have a lasting effect for decades to come. For years you have provided multiple annual scholarships to UW-Stout students, and a few years ago established an endowed chair to support transformational leadership. This endowment aids the university in carrying out various initiatives to maintain excellence and relevancy. In 2009, the United Way of Marathon County recognized you for over thirty years of leadership and philanthropic contributions by conferring the Tocqueville Award, the highest award given by United Way. Your efforts extend to many other areas. You have supported the arts, parks and recreation, animal welfare, historic preservation, senior citizen programs and youth development in Wausau, Chippewa Falls and Door County. Education has always held a special place in your hearts. You are graduates of UW-Stout, and as an undergraduate, Dwight became involved with the American Industry Project, an initiative to assure that the curriculum at UW-Stout was in sync with the needs of the business world. Lifelong learners, Dwight obtained a doctorate and used that credential to move through the faculty and administrative ranks until becoming president of the North Central Technical College in Wausau. After nearly twenty successful years in education, you moved on to the private sector, taking leadership positions at Wausau Insurance Companies, where you later served as president, and finally, serving as chairman and CEO of Greenheck Corporation of Schofield, Wisconsin. Greenheck has grown to be a global leader in the air movement and control industry under your leadership. UW-Stout has benefited from this growth through your company s employment of a significant number of Stout graduates, and the company s donation of ventilation equipment for UW-Stout facilities. Furthermore, you ensured that all these organizations placed a priority on supporting and benefiting the communities in which they operated. Your dedication to the betterment of the state of Wisconsin, higher education and your community has earned you these citations. It is our high honor to award to you these degrees, given in Menomonie, Wisconsin, this 12th day of May Dr. Charles W. Sorensen, Chancellor Spring Commencement

Harvey Hall Theatre The 95-year-old, historic theater reopened on April 1, 2011, after a $5.6 million renovation last fall and winter. The theater, originally called Stout Institute Auditorium, opened on May 30, The renovation included reconstruction of the stage and stage rigging, lighting and sound systems, dressing rooms, entrance, vestibules and box office. In keeping with the historic nature of a 1920s theater, the aesthetics are very warm, comfortable and welcoming. Actor James Whitmore, presidential hopeful John F. Kennedy and the Vienna Boys Choir are just some of the well-known people and performers who have appeared on stage at historic Harvey Hall Theatre at UW-Stout.

Stout Manual Training Schools, 1891 to 1908 Under the auspices of the Menomonie Public Schools, James Huff Stout funded various educational enterprises. In 1891, manual training and domestic science training was introduced through the Stout Manual Training School brought the introduction of kindergarten classes. In 1899, the Kindergarten Training School began to prepare kindergarten teachers. A School of Physical Culture opened in 1901, which provided physical training. In 1903, training schools for manual training teachers and domestic science teachers were added. By 1907, a Homemaker s School had opened and a trade school was planned. The Stout Institute, 1908 to 1955 To simplify administration and clarify ownership of and responsibility for the various public and Stout Training Schools, The Stout Institute was formed in The institute was designed to provide facilities in the way of buildings, equipment and teachers, through which young people of both sexes may secure such instruction and training in industrial and related lines of educational effort as will enable them to become efficient industrial, social and economic units within their environment. In 1911, following Senator Stout s death, ownership transferred to the State of Wisconsin. Stout State College, 1955 to 1964 The Stout Institute Board of Trustees was abolished, and the institution came under the jurisdiction of the Board of Regents of the State Colleges, a move that the institute board resisted, fearing a loss of prestige from being a special college. In retrospect, joining the league, as President Fryklund expressed it, proved to be a distinct advantage to the school and its faculty. Stout State University, 1964 to 1971 The name change was authorized by the Board of Regents who believed that the state colleges had reached another plateau in their development. Increased enrollment brought new and enlarged facilities. A traditional focus was maintained even while new majors were added and new directions were given to established majors. University of Wisconsin-Stout, 1971 to present The Wisconsin State Universities and the University of Wisconsin campuses merged to form the University of Wisconsin System. UW-Stout was designated by the Board of Regents as one of only two special mission universities in the UW System. UW-Stout was to offer focused programs related to professional careers in industry, technology, home economics, applied art and the helping professions. In March 2007, UW-Stout was designated Wisconsin s Polytechnic University by the UW System Board of Regents. 30 University of Wisconsin-Stout
