Annual Campaign The YMCA-YWCA as a Charity As a charitable association, the Y is proud to provide financial assistance to families who otherwise couldn t offer a camp experience to their children. Strong Kids, the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg s annual giving campaign, helps to make sure everyone is welcome and no child is left out. 100% of YMCA-YWCA Annual Campaign funds raised go to making sure that no one is excluded due to financial need. Donors give through the Y, not to the Y. Camp Douglas The Y is dedicated to make sure all people have a chance at positive and healthy experiences with YMCA-YWCA Camps. A visit to Camp Douglas is an opportunity to feel safe, find challenge, have fun, gain confidence, be yourself, learn respect for others and for nature, grow as a person and make new friends. Child, student and adult groups are all welcome at Camp Douglas as long as program objectives are consistent with the values and mission of the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg. The Camp Douglas office can help answer any questions or concerns you may have about your visit. A pre-visit slide show presentation and site tour can easily be arranged. Working together with group organizers, the Camp Douglas staff guarantees the highest quality program designed to meet your group s needs. Our Location Camp Douglas is part of the YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg camps branch and is located just 34 km Northwest of Winnipeg, just outside of Woodlands and off Highway #6. Formally Salvation Army Camp Woodlands, the site was acquired by YMCA-YWCA of Winnipeg in March of Rentals and Site Use Camp Douglas offers both overnight experiences to groups of varying sizes, year round. Overnight rentals also include all meals, which must be prepared by YMCA-YWCA staff. Our facility easily accommodates multiple groups at once. During the majority of rental season, more than one school or organization is on-site at the same time. Exclusive site use can be granted to groups of 100 persons or more. For small groups, exclusive use is available for an additional fee. 1 P a g e

2 Accommodations With two (2) types of lodging offered, we can accommodate up to 120 people in residence year-round. Six of our cabins house 14 people (12 in main rooms, 2 in leader s room) and are equipped with heat and electricity. All cabins have a separate centrally-located washroom and shower facility. Our lodges are dorm-style buildings with 4-8 bedrooms each. Each room sleeps 4 people. Each lodge sleeps people and has bathroom and shower facilities located within. YMCA-YWCA Staff and Program Instruction All groups visiting Camp Douglas have a group coordinator during their stay. This coordinator is available to facilitate every aspect of your visit. Program specialists and support staff are also available for an additional fee. Groups desiring a full Camp Douglas experience hire staff at a flat daily cost to run meals, programs and instruct any and all recreational activities. They will take care of your group s needs from 7:45 AM until evening snack at 9:15 PM. Camp Douglas professional and enthusiastic program specialists will ensure that all participants have the opportunity to combine fun and learning while getting the most of their outdoor excursion. Our instruction ratio is 1:15 (instructor to participant) for most rotations, 1:8 for high ropes. Groups wishing to participate in high ropes will be required to book an additional program staff to meet the specified ratio. Food Services Camp Douglas food services team prepare appetizing and nutritious meals which are served family or buffet style, depending on your group s needs. All groups must fill out the Food Restrictions and Special Dietary Needs form. We have experience in preparing food for most diets (i.e. vegetarian, vegan, lactose intolerant, diabetic and celiac). Our kitchen requires 30 days notice to ensure all dietary needs can be accommodated. Meals & Menu Camp Douglas kitchen operates on a set two-week menu plan that is available from the Camp Douglas site office or online. Although we specialize in camp classics, our kitchen staff also has a full-set of banquet menus. Single meals are available at an additional charge for day groups or visitors. Our standard menu consists of healthy and filling camp favourites like: pancakes or scrambled eggs & hash browns for breakfast; macaroni & cheese or hamburgers for lunch; chicken & potatoes or stir-fry for dinner. Also included is a cereal bar & fruit at breakfast; a salad bar during lunch & dinner and an evening snack. There is no additional charge for the standard menu. Outdoor Education Programs The YMCA-YWCA has always been a community leader in providing opportunities and programs for youth and families. At Camp Douglas, we carry out our mission of helping people develop and strengthening communities by providing a variety of experiences for youth and adults. Whether hosting schools or community groups, our focus remains on supporting character development and building developmental assets. 2 P a g e

3 Camp Douglas programs are divided into rotations, wide games, evening programs and free time activities. For a standard three-day visit, guests can participate in set rotations, two wide games, two evening programs and all free time activities. Program schedules are customized for each group to meet specific needs and requests. Please ensure your program requests are submitted on time (eight weeks before arrival) so we can guarantee your program choices. Rotations Program rotations are formal programs instructed by Camp Douglas specialists for groups of up to 15 participants. Groups visiting for three days may choose up to six rotations. Free Time Depending on the size of your group and your rotation schedule, free time may be added in place of, or in addition to free time for the whole group. Please see below for free time activities. High Ropes Participants challenge themselves on an obstacle suspended 45 feet in the air and secured to poles in the forest floor. The elements are designed to pose a variety of climbing and personal challenges. High ropes participants are encouraged to meet personal goals and support others to do the same. This activity has a 1:8 ratio, requires two Camp Douglas instructors. Challenge Course Built in the forest, the challenge course is a number of group problem-solving activities focused on team challenge and group dynamics. As they work toward a common goal, students learn the importance of cooperation, communication, leadership, initiative, and trust. Students can also complete individual challenges on our course. Outdoor Living Skills Fires After learning about the basic elements of fire, participants are divided into small groups and given the opportunity to build and light small campfires. This program, a student favourite, is topped with a marshmallow roast. Geo-caching Students are introduced to GPS and bearings and how they can use them in conjunction with a map. Students guide themselves around camp using a GPS completing a mini scavenger hunt. Team Building Students are engaged in cooperative challenge activities that build confidence, teamwork, and trust. Working together, students increase their decision-making and problem-solving skills and heighten their abilities in conflict resolution and communication. Wide Games Wide games are run with the whole group and promote fun, activity, teamwork, and fair play. Most wide games combine elements of cooperation and competition. They are generally active games and are run outdoors. Capture the Flag This camp classic, played in the cabin line, pits two or more sides against one another in an attempt to capture the other team s flag. 3 P a g e

4 Icebreakers Break down barriers and get all of your participants eager for fun b starting your visit with icebreakers. These quick and exciting games help everyone become comfortable at camp while providing laughter and exercise. Animal Game This physically-active simulation game helps students to understand environmental niches, animal adaptations, and predatorprey relations. By role-playing the life of an herbivore, omnivore, or carnivore, participants experience the interdependence of animals at the top and bottom of the food chain and how people and other limiting factors impact natural ecosystems. Swimming Beginning with a short swim test, participants can enjoy our pool and waterslides. With or without a life jacket, students can get exercise while playing games or just lazing around the pool. Evening Programs Evening programs are fun and active, but not to the same extent as wide games. Run after dinner and before snack, evening programs are designed to challenge participants to join in and have a few laughs. All evening programs can be run both indoors and outdoors, depending on the weather conditions and the time of year. Campfire No visit to Camp Douglas is complete without a campfire! The Y staff will get the fire lit and lead your group in song after song guaranteed to keep your participants singing for the rest of their stay (and probably home on the bus too!) Initiative Challenges Whether it is an egg drop, a straw-and-pepper tower building contest or Can They Do It?, all initiative challenges provide the opportunity for teamwork and creativity. Skit in a Bag The group is split into troupes and a mystery bag of costumes, props and words is given to each. Performers have a limited time to create a skit using all of the items in the bag. For groups who do not need as much direction, a normal skit night is also possible. Free Time Free time activities can take place at various points throughout the day and can be scheduled for the entire group or for each individual program group. Please ensure you select the free time option on the confirmation sheet when booking. Basketball Our court is right across from cabin line and with two brand new nets can keep even the most active students busy. Field With a couple huge flat areas and a shed full of sports equipment, the playfield is a great place for kids and adults to kick a ball, throw a disc, and generally run around. 4 P a g e

5 Example 3-Day Program Schedule Additional Information & Services Community Meeting Upon arrival, all groups meet with the Camp Douglas staff for a community meeting. This meeting familiarizes adults and kids with camp guidelines and procedures. Participants have the opportunity to talk to the staff and clarify any questions in regards to their stay. From there, participants gather their luggage and have time to settle into their accommodations. At this time, your group coordinator will meet with adult chaperones to review all aspects of your visit. 5 P a g e

6 Lost & Found Items found at Camp Douglas will be placed in the dining hall and shown at meals. At the end of your stay, any unclaimed items will be held for one week and then donated to a local charity. If an item has been left behind, please call the Camp Douglas office and leave a description and contact information. We will do our best to find it and make arrangements to have it returned. Driving Directions From Perimeter Highway, head north on Highway 6 You will pass Grosse Isle and Warren before arriving at the town of Woodlands On the north end of Woodlands, you are turning west (left) onto a dirt road (#82) Landmarks for this dirt road: on the right hand side of the highway is a Camp Douglas sign, you will have just passed a Shell station on your left, there is a Midway Prefab homes on your right, there is a large sign on your left for Miami Beach Once you are heading west on the dirt road, the site is 2.5 km and on the north (right) side of the road. There is a large Camp Douglas sign. Once you arrive at camp, follow the road straight in front of you to the traffic circle. A staff will meet you there. Adult Chaperone Guidelines Adult chaperones stay at Camp Douglas at no charge at a 1:10 ratio if they are providing 24-hour supervision and staying in the same accommodations as their participants. Food & Beverages Water and bowls of fruit are available 24-hours a day in the dining hall for adult chaperones and participants alike. We discourage bringing personal food of any kind to Camp Douglas. Any food brought to Camp Douglas can be given to the 6 P a g e

7 kitchen staff and stored safely during your visit. Please note that we strive to be a nut-free site. We appreciate your help in ensuring no nut products are brought to Camp Douglas. Coffee and tea are available in the dining hall 24-hours a day for adult chaperones. We ask that all dining hall mugs stay in the dining hall if you would like to take a hot beverage around site, please bring appropriate travel containers. Alcohol is not permitted except when YMCA-YWCA management confirms the alcohol will be allowed. Details will be discussed if applicable. The group must also be entirely adult or adults with the parents of children involved present (as at a reception or banquet. The group s leader assumes responsibility for supervising and limiting excessive consumption, obnoxious behaviour, impaired driving or activities that may result in accident or injury. Health Care & First Aid Camp Douglas staff are trained in first aid and CPR and are available to provide assistance if required. Supervision of Students/Participants Each participant s Camp Douglas experience will be much more successful with adults interacting and participating we ask that chaperones take a hands-on approach in supervision. We suggest chaperones discuss goals and expectations with their participants before arrival and model expected behaviours once here. Telephones, Fax & Internet Cellphone service can be weak at Camp Douglas, dependent upon your provider. If you need to make outgoing calls or need someone to get in touch with you, a phone is available in the office. It is equipped with a voice mailbox and is accessible 24- hours a day. Instructions for dialing out and checking messages are posted. A fax machine is located in the main office. If you need to send or receive a fax while here, please inform your group coordinator and he/she will make the necessary arrangements. Camp Douglas provides wireless internet access in the McCloy Hall (upper floor) for chaperones only. Parking Luggage and personnel may be dropped off right outside the dining hall, but all vehicles must park in the parking lot at the entrance to Camp Douglas. Washrooms & Showers Washrooms are available in all buildings at Camp Douglas for use by chaperones, participants and staff alike. Showers are available in our cabins and lodge where you will be staying. Booking Camp Douglas is now open year-round and we accept school bookings from September to June. We can accommodate groups of up to 120 students. Our fall season is popular for those wanting to help a new class get to know each other, and to set-up the relationships and cultures of a class. 7 P a g e

8 Winter is popular for those going a bit stir crazy inside and wanting to enhance the learning that happens in the classroom with experiential education. Spring is popular for those wanting a wrap-up celebration for their class. To request a school date, please complete the Request Inquiry Form and fax or it to us. We will do our best to fulfill your date requests and will contact you upon receipt of the form. Camp Douglas Rental Fees Camp Douglas rentals include use of camp facilities (cabins and programs as requested), groups and 3 meals a day. High Ropes, Climbing and Pool program areas required Camp Douglas staff see instructor rates below. If you are interested in site exclusivity, please contact our office in regards to availability and minimum participant numbers. WEEKDAYS Includes all meals from lunch on your arrival day to lunch on your departure day. Evening snack, chaperone snack and adult coffee and tea service all day. Departure time is prior to 3 pm on your departure day. $ 54.00/ person + GST - 1 night and 2 days $ / person + GST - 2 nights and 3 days $ /person + GST - 4 nights and 5 days WEEKENDS Meals include Friday evening snack to Sunday lunch. Arrival time is 5 pm or later on Friday and departure time is prior to 3 pm on Sunday.
