Welcome to Arthritis Foundation Juvenile Arthritis Warriors Camp Parent Planner Resident Camp Juvenile Arthritis Camps Nationally Sponsored by:
Welcome to Arthritis Foundation Juvenile Arthritis Warriors (JAWS) Camp We are so excited you have enrolled your child at JAWS Camp! We want to assist you in preparing your child for a wonderful experience. Getting ready for camp is an important part of your child s overall camp experience. This preparation time is an opportunity to build excitement for camp and answer questions you may have. The Arthritis Foundation takes every precaution to provide a safe and healthy experience for each camper. Our juvenile arthritis camps are medically supervised by pediatric rheumatologists, rheumatology nurses and other healthcare professionals who are available on-site, 24 hours a day. JAWS Camp will take place on July 6-8th at Bradford Woods. Campers will participate in traditional camp activities: arts and crafts, games, singing, campfires and more! Contact Information Jillian Lain jlain@arthritis.org
Our JA Camp Mission Arthritis Foundation camps provide a safe and secure camp experience for children and teens with juvenile arthritis and childhood rheumatic diseases. Campers gain a greater understanding of their own juvenile arthritis diagnosis and treatment, develop peer-to-peer support, increase independence and selfconfidence, discover new skills and interests, and develop the skills they need to be leaders, advocates and champions in their everyday lives.
Direction and Camp Map: To get to Bradford Woods from the North: Take 67 South towards Mooresville and Martinsville. After passing through Mooresville, continue another 8 miles. Bradford Woods will be located on your right, approximately one mile after you pass a Marathon gas station. To get to Bradford Woods from the South: Take 37 North to Martinsville. Merge onto Morton Ave/IN-39 North. Follow IN-39 across the White River, then bear right onto 67 North. Follow 67 North approximately 5 miles. Look for the brown sign directing you to Bradford Woods. The entrance to camp will be on your left. Bradford Woods 5040 IN-67, Martinsville, IN PDF Directions
CHECK IN: July 6 th at 2pm EST CHECK OUT: July 8 th at 12pm EST Head Lice and Communicable Disease Protocol: Head lice and communicable disease are a common occurrence among children and spread rapidly. For this reason, our JA camps have a proactive head lice and communicable disease management protocol in place to prevent outbreaks. All JA camp participants are screened upon arrival or at the bus stop. Any child with lice, nits or a communicable disease will not be able to attend the JA camp program.
Resident Camp Daily Schedule Our goal is to provide a balance of group activities, education and independence building programs. Activities will vary daily and are subject to weather. We value the opportunity for children to connect with other living with childhood rheumatic disease and the opportunity to become leaders, advocates and champions in their everyday lives. **See camp schedule on next page**

What not to bring Please do not bring cash, candy, food, gum, pets, fireworks, explosives, knives, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, cell phones, ipods, stereos, MP3 players, electronic games, good jewelry or any other irreplaceable or valuable items. Cost to replace and/or repair equipment or property destroyed will not be assumed by the Arthritis Foundation but by the parent or guardian of the child responsible. Luggage Please limit your child's luggage to one carry-on, one suitcase and sleeping bag/bedding.
Important Information Medical Care The Arthritis Foundation JA Camps are staffed with registered nurses 24 hours a day. Medications, prescription and non-prescription drugs must to be in the original container with the pharmacy label on it. Please only provide the proper dosage for the week. All medications will be collected at the bus site at the time of check in or at camp upon arrival. Please do NOT pack medication in camper s luggage. Illness or injury The camp medical team is responsible for overseeing the total health care of the camp. In the event of an injury or illness that needs further attention, the doctor available or on call or the emergency room will be utilized. The camp medical team will make recommendations to send campers home, if necessary. The following criteria will be used in determining if a camper must go home: Illness persists longer than 48 hours A prescription is required to cure the injury or illness We are unable to treat the illness Illness is contagious (immediate dismissal) Injury prevents the camper from participating in activities The Arthritis Foundation does not provide transportation home for sick campers
Homesick Campers Our counselors are trained to recognize the symptoms associated with homesick campers. Efforts will be made to console campers and assist them in developing coping strategies. The following guidelines will be used to address homesick campers: Encouraged NOT to call home until 48 hours have passed If a camper is still homesick after two nights and reasonable efforts by camp staff have been exhausted, parents may be contacted to pick up their camper. **Due to the short timeframe of our camp, you probably will not hear from your camper during their time at camp.** Refunds will not be given for campers who leave due to being homesick. The Arthritis Foundation does not provide transportation home for homesick campers
Visitors or phone calls Once your child arrives at camp, they will begin the experience of making new friendships and participating in camp activities. Since the camp program is a short time, we want your child to take advantage of every moment. Visits or phone calls from family members will take away from that experience and possibly lead to homesickness. If we need you during the camp program, we will contact you immediately. Food service Balanced meals are prepared and served by the food service staff for each meal. If your child has any special dietary needs that were indicated in their registration forms, you will be contacted by Arthritis Foundation to be sure your child's needs are accommodated for the duration of the camp program. Lost and Found Unclaimed items will be kept at the local Arthritis Foundation office until two weeks past the end of the camp program. The items are then donated to a local charity.
Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco As outlined in the Participant Expectation Agreement that was signed during your registration process, there will be no possession or use of alcohol, tobacco, illegal drugs or weapons before, during or after the camp experience while on camp grounds. Failure to comply shall result in immediate dismissal from camp. Harassment As outlined in the Arthritis Foundation s No Harassment/Discrimination policy that was signed during your registration process, all camp participants will refrain from any bullying, hazing, harassment or similar behavior. Failure to comply shall result in immediate dismissal from camp. Cabin Life Cabin groups are arranged by age/grade. We do our best to ensure all cabin-mates are within one year or grade of each other. Your camper is expected to maintain an acceptable level of manners, behavior and attitude in their group to create a positive living environment.
