2 WELCOME LETTER Dear Scout Leaders: Welcome to the C.S.I. Rotary the 2008 Cherokee District Spring Camporee. This spring, boys from all across the nine counties of the Cherokee District will challenge themselves and other scouts by competing against one another in a weekend of Scout Skills, team working skills and challenges to the mind using observation and deduction at Camp Rotary in Hartwell. These competitions will include everything from knot tying to pioneering and tracking skills. This promises to be an exciting time for everyone that attends. Boy Scouts and Venturer s are encouraged to attend. Webelos will be welcome to attend and compete (if they so chose) with a host troop. C.S.I. Rotary plans to challenge the minds and skills of Cherokee scouts. The activities that are planned will strive to provide your scouts with memories and fun that they will remember through the years. C.S.I. Rotary, is located in the Reed Creek Community in Hartwell, Georgia. The scouts will participate in several activity stations by Patrol, run by volunteers and scouts from the Host Troops #1 and #44 within the Cherokee District. The Official Scout Uniform is the designated dress for flag and campfire ceremonies, however, sports wear may be worn during games and activities. BSA camping regulations are expected to be followed at all times. 3 GENERAL INFORMATION LOCATION: The 2008 Spring Camporee for the Cherokee District will be held April 11-13, 2008 at Camp Rotary in Hartwell, Georgia. COST/Registration: EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION-$10.00 Early Bird registration is by April 4, 2008 DAY OF EVENT/LATE REGISTRATION- $20.00* Scouts registering/paying the day of the event will pay $20.00 per participant. If you register the Day of the event you cannot be guaranteed to receive the event Patch. REGISTRATION: Please complete the attached Registration form for those attending and submit it with your fees to the Jefferson Service Center (P.O. Box 399 Jefferson, GA 30549) or at Camporee Headquarters when you check in Friday night. IF YOU PLAN TO PAY ON-SITE, PLEASE CALL THE JEFFERSON SERVICE CENTER at and speak with Myrt Rustay by Wednesday, April 9, 2008 and let us know if your Troop is planning to attend and how many attendees approximately are attending. PARKING: After troop set-up time Friday night, ALL vehicles must be parked in designated areas. CAMPING AREA: The troop camping areas will be located in gravel parking area at the entrance to camp. SITES: Troop campsite assignments will be made when you sign in at Camporee Headquarters on Friday night. Troop gateways are encouraged but remember to bring your own gateway makings. Each Gateway must be built Onsite, with the exception of your troop sign. You should bring your own materials, such as ridge poles, rope, etc. You may dig post holes for gateways and any other normal camp activities (there will be bonus points for additional gadgets.) however, please restore all surfaces to their original conditions using your best no-trace/ low impact camping methods. WATER: Water is at several areas on the camp grounds. A map marking those locations will be provided at check-in. More Fun & Games: Catapults are encouraged. Please bring your own. Plan to demonstrate your catapult skills Saturday afternoon.

4 FIRES: No on ground fires are allowed. Please come prepared to cook with either stoves or some device to keep the fire off the ground. Please provide your own firewood or better yet, use camp stoves. As always, please remember and apply the OUTDOOR CODE while camping: AS AN AMERICAN I WILL DO MY BEST TO - Be Clean in my outdoor manners. Be careful with fire. Be considerate of the outdoors and To be conservation-minded. SANITATION: Toilet facilities will be available. Please do your best to keep them all clean and in working order. Field latrines WILL NOT BE ALLOWED!! SAFETY: Normal safety precautions should be taken at these events; no throwing of rocks or other objects, no sheath knifes or machetes, no liquid fuel or open flames in tents, no unattended fires, etc. All accidental injuries should be referred immediately to the First Aid Station. CONDUCT: The SCOUT LAW (A scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent) and SCOUT OATH or PROMISE (On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country, and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.) are the code of conduct at the Camporee. FIRST AID: A first aid station will be clearly marked and trained medical personnel will be in attendance at all times. TRASH: Please bag all of your trash and police your campsite. All trash may be taken to the dumpster located at the camp grounds. UNIFORM: The complete Official Scout Uniform (Class A ) should be worn at all Flag Ceremonies, Cracker Barrels, and Campfire. Sports Wear is allowed for the games and activities. CHECKOUT: When a Troop is ready to check-out on Sunday morning, the Senior Patrol Leader should coordinate with the Camporee staff to have the area inspected prior to departure.

6 Map to Camp Rotary Camp Rotary is located near I-85 in north Georgia. From the First Baptist Church in Hartwell (intersction of Route 29 and Route 51 North): Take 51 North (Chandler St) for 6.9 miles to the stop sign at Reed Creek Baptist Church. Turn right and continue 1 mile to Crawford Ferry Road. Turn left and continue 1.2 miles to Rainbow Drive (the first paved road to the right, first right after passing Lindy Lane). 7 Pulley Game Brief Description of the Events Patrol will demonstrate their team work skills in the manipulation of pulley and weights through a series of weight placement and relocation. Points will be given based on time and skill. Knot Tying competition Patrol will demonstrate members skills in tying knots in assigned order to complete a set of links. The completed set of knot links will then have to be raised one foot from the ground between two locations supporting one and other without disassembling. Points will be awarded based on time and use of correctly tied required knots. Knots to be used will be Clove hitch, timber hitch, double half hitch, sheet bend, sheep shank, square and taut line hitch. Rope Burn Traditional rope burning trial. Points to be awarded on method of fire starting, time taken to burn through the rope. CSI Tracks & CSI Campsite Patrol members will use their powers of observation & scout skill knowledge. Points will be given for accuracy and knowledge. Knotty Trail Patrols will be asked to recognize any or all of the following knots: Square, half hitch, clove hitch, Double fisherman s, bowline, tautline, timber, trucker s hitch, constrictor, Crown, eye splice, Turkshead, Buntline, Figure eight, Heaving, Monkey s paw, Rowling hitch, Sheep shank, sheet bend, double sheet bend. Points will be given for every knot recognized and quantity remembered. Additional points given for correct order and number of ropes used to tie knots.

8 Home Star Brief Description of the Events Continued Patrols will be asked to find North without any mechanical means, only using what can be found in nature. They will be asked to lay a stake pointing as close to north as possible. Patrols may chose to bring their own 1 by stake 3 in length appropriately marked with their patrol emblem and troop number and any other appropriate designs as they may choose provided that the point remains clearly defined for official use and that the stake may be placed squarely on the ground for best results. Trestle Competition Patrols will build a trestle and pull it an assigned distance with a rider. Points will be given for time, quality of construction and completion of distance pulled intact. Rope Throw & Log Pull Patrols will be required anchor one end of a rope and throw the other over a trestle, hitch this end to a log. Then take up the slack and raise the log off the ground. Points will be given for time to completion of task and use of proper hitches.

9 Ultimate Axe Competition This competition will involve 4 boys from each Troop. Each with a valid Totin Chip. Each Troop will be responsible for providing their own ¾ or full size axe, a file to sharpen it with, gloves, and 5 stakes long enough to immobilize a 6-8 diameter, and brace the axe during sharpening. DO NOT SHARPEN THE AXE BEFORE ARRIVING! All axes will be brought to the cracker barrel (put your troop # on axe) and will be dulled to a consistent poor edge. Axes are to be left with staff until time of competition. There will be adjacent axe yards, and another observation rope all other scouts must stay behind. Refer to chapter 4 in the Scout Handbook for technique on safety, sharpening, and use of axe. A sample log will be on display to show required staking. When the competition begins, two Scouts from each Troop will advance into the axe yard and stake the log and axe. Their axe will be waiting for them in the yard. One will assist in holding the axe handle while the other sharpens. These two scouts will be allowed to sharpen one side each if desired. (The key to winning will be influenced by time spent sharpening as opposed to chopping). Once these boys are content with their sharpening, one of them will leave the axe yard. Once he is out of the axe yard (not necessary to be past the observation rope) Scout #2 will mask the blade in the end of the log. Scout #2 will tag Scout #3 at the observation rope, and Scout #3 will proceed to the axe yard and begin chopping. If at anytime a stake comes loose, Scout #3 must leave the yard, and tag Scout #1 and Scout #2 at the observation rope to re-stake the log. All tags must occur at the observation rope. If at any time Scout #3 get tire or faint, he is to mask his axe into the end of the log, leave the yard, and tag Scout #4 to come in and finish the cut. Scout #4 must be tagged at some time before the cut is complete. All Troops will continue cutting until the log is cut in half. The scout is to mask the axe and check the time measured when he leaves the yard. In addition to speed, Troops will be judged on proper procedure, and may be penalized for cutting while stakes come out of the ground, crossing the observation rope before being tagged, and unsafe practices with equipment. If at any time a scout is injured (minor), he must leave the axe and seek proper first aid. Scout #3 or Scout #4 will take his place. The only time more than one person will be able to enter the axe yard after the axe is sharpened, is in the case of a serious injury or complication.
