1 Welcome to Partners N Pals Cub Scout Camp Greetings Campers! My name is Wadene Bloms, and I, along with my partner, Maria Reidhead, are the Camp Directors for this year s Partners N Pals Cub Scout Camp that will be held July 7 th 8 th at San Isabel Scout Ranch. Thank YOU so much for choosing to participate in Partners N Pals and we are very excited for this year s camp! 2 PARTNERS N PALS CAMPING LIST Individual Items: Backpack/Duffel Bag to bring your gear in! Sleeping Bag and Pillow Air Mattress/Pad/Cot (the tent platforms are very hard) Oh yeah, and don t forget the air pump! Soap/Washcloth/Towel/Comb Toothbrush/toothpaste (and any other personal items such as deodorant, tissue, etc.) Cub Scout handbook (Parents & Scouts feel free to take advantage of free time and work on a few requirements together) Warm Pajamas or sweatshirt & sweatpants Clothing (At least 1 pair of Jeans; Underwear; t-shirts, shorts, etc.) 2-3 Pairs of socks (you never know about the rain or when you re around the lake!!!) Jacket and/or heavy coat (in case it gets chilly) Comfortable shoes such as tennis shoes - ***No sandals please! Rain gear (a disposable poncho or garbage bag will do) Personal first-aid kit (see checklist below) Sunglasses (optional) Camera (optional) Money (optional) (There is a trading post that sells snacks and souvenirs) Sunscreen (Mandatory) Flashlight with good batteries (bring extra batteries too). Fishing Gear (fishing pole, bait, tackle box, etc.) **Adults, make sure you have your Colorado State Fishing License! Small backpack/carry bag to carry your water bottles, sunscreen, etc. around camp! (optional but very recommended) Folding Chair (optional) this will be handy when fishing or in your campsite! Personal First-aid Kit Band-Aids Gauze pads and tape Antiseptic Pads Moleskin Insect repellent Anti-biotic Ointment Aspirin or Advil (optional) Needle and tweezers Continued on next page!

4 ***Please mark all of your items with your first and last names so that we can locate the owners of any lost items! Hey Parents & Scouts! Do you know what smellables are? These are the sweet smelling items that we as humans would never think of eating, but the wildlife at camp love them! Examples of smellables include food, toothpaste, deodorant, soap, sunscreen, batteries, etc. Please pack ALL of your smellables in a Ziplock Bag with your name on it. These items will need to be stored in your vehicle, so that you don t wake up in the middle of the night with a squirrel, raccoon, or even a bigger, furrier friend trying to sleep with you! 6 Other Camp Information for Your Reading Pleasure: CAMP FACILITIES San Isabel Scout Ranch provides a wide range of facilities which include: the Dining Hall; First Aid/Health Lodge Building - staffed by certified medical personnel; supervised boating & fishing areas at our own private Wilbur Ladd Lake; shooting sports ranges; Ecology area; craft lodge; shower facilities; and a newly remodeled fire circle. Each campsite includes 2-person canvas wall tents on wooden platforms, picnic tables, vaulted toilet facilities with hand washing stations, and water faucets. ***The Health Lodge is located between the Dining Hall and the Trading Post in the center of camp. All medications are dispensed here and the camp health officer administers first aid. HEALTH FORMS BSA Medical Form must be submitted for EVERY youth and adult staying at camp. ALL INFORMATION ON THE FORM MUST BE PROVIDED! MEDICATIONS Under Colorado State Law, anyone bringing medication to camp must follow certain procedures. ALL MEDICATIONS must be turned in to the Health Officer upon arrival at camp; this includes prescription medications and over-the-counter medications. All medication must be in the original container, marked with the camper s name and Pack number. Medications will be returned to the adult at the end of the event. Only Health Lodge Staff may dispense medication to adults and Scouts while at San Isabel Scout Ranch. Scouts and adults may carry inhalers and bee sting kits. INJURIES AT CAMP All injuries including minor cuts must be reported to the Health Officer and logged in to the first-aid logs. In the case of serious injuries or illnesses, do not move the victim! If you are trained in first aid, begin first aid and have someone contact the nearest staff member. CAMPERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Scouts or adults who have special needs due to physical or mental challenges will be accommodated to the best of our ability. Please be sure to let the Camp Office know as soon as possible of any special need your Scouts or parents have. Those with special dietary needs will be accommodated to the best of our abilities. Advance notice is required for special dietary/food needs. Please provide specific written needs no later than 1 week prior to arrival. CAMP TRADING POST The San Isabel Scout Ranch Trading Post is located next to the Health Lodge in the center of camp, and is open at different times throughout the day. The Trading Post is fully stocked and offers some camping supplies, souvenirs, ice cream, candy, and postage. SHOWER FACILITIES San Isabel Scout Ranch has individual shower facilities for males and females. However, unless a special need arises, showers will not be taken during the Partners N Pals event. *Contact Camp Director if you have any questions. CAMP STANDARDS OF CONDUCT The law of camp is found in the 12 points of the Scout Law. Parents are responsible for supervision of the Scouts and children they ve brought to camp. THE BUDDY SYSTEM IN CAMP Scouts should never travel alone in camp! It is the parent s responsibility to ensure that the individuals they brought to camp are using the buddy system at all times. 7 ITEMS TO LEAVE AT HOME Guns, bows, sheath knives, valuables, and other items that are not on the camping list should be left at home. We request that portable electronics (i.e., CD players, electronic games, etc.) be left at home as a courtesy to other Scouts who have come to the mountains to experience a wilderness setting. If you allow your Scout to bring them, please limit their use to your own tent. The camp will not take responsibility for lost or stolen items. CAMPSITE INSPECTIONS In an effort to help teach Scouts good camping habits, and to provide for the health and safety of camp, a campsite and tent inspection will occur before campers check-out and head home! GARBAGE Campsite trash must be put in the trash barrels located in each camp. The barrels will be emptied each evening. To avoid attracting unwanted furry friends to your camp, please do not throw trash in the barrels after the nightly pickup and definitely do not leave trash (such as candy wrappers) in your tent. Please walk your trash over to the lodge and dispose of in those barrels. FISHING Fishing is a wonderful activity but can also be a dangerous one. Scouts must use the buddy system when fishing. Also, good Cub Scout behavior is required when fishing at the lake. The law of camp is found in the 12 points of the Scout Law. Take this time to sit and relax with your family and enjoy the peaceful outdoors. Please remember that NO FISH IS ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE LAKE due to the bears! LIGHTNING Summer storms occasionally strike San Isabel Scout Ranch, bringing lighting with them. During a thunder storm head for cover, stay away from tall trees, wires, or plumbing. Get out of open spaces such as THE LAKE and MEADOW located in front of the dining hall stay away from the flagpoles. SUNBURN At high altitudes, sunburns can occur at a much faster rate than at sea level less atmosphere to protect you. Be prepared by wearing a hat and use lots of sunscreen! BEARS San Isabel Scout Ranch and its campers are fortunate to share their corner of the Wet Mountains with a number of local animals one of the most spectacular and misunderstood of these creatures are the black bears it is important for Scouts staying at San Isabel Scout Ranch to remember that we are the visitors in the bears' natural habitat, and we should act accordingly. This means Scouts, leaders, and adults should avoid keeping food or other "smellables" (e.g. deodorant, toothpaste, etc) in their campsites. San Isabel Scout Ranch requires for Partners N Pals attendees store all smellables in their vehicles. DEHYDRATION Is a serious health concern that is easily prevented! All campers are encouraged to drink water frequently soda pop is not an effective substitute. Everyone should carry a personal water bottle wherever drinking water is not immediately available. ALTITUDE SICKNESS San Isabel Scout Ranch is located at 9,000 feet above sea level it takes a couple days to acclimate to the higher altitude. Since Partners N Pals is an overnight adventure we do not have a few days to adjust to the altitude so we have to be a little more cautious. Symptoms of altitude sickness can become evident within two hours of arrival at camp. These symptoms can include headache, dizziness, and nausea. Any of these symptoms should be reported to the Camp Health Lodge as soon as possible.
