1 66th Confluence - St. Louis Confluence 66th is going camping! We are going to Johnson Shut-Ins State Park October 11th to October 13th. In this packet you can find: Overview of the weekend Quick facts Directions & campground map What to pack/what not to bring Permission slip BPSA Youth Protection Methods Overview: This is a family-oriented camp-out. All family members are welcome! However, even if parents cannot come along on this campout, don t hesitate to send your Timberwolf (Otters will need a parent or guardian to accompany them unless leaders and parents agree otherwise on a case-by-case basis). Timberwolves & Pathfinders will leave at October 11th at 5:45pm. Campers - parents, siblings, and scouts - should bring a brown-bag dinner for Friday night. They will set up the campsite for our weekend, eat dinner, and have a campfire. On Saturday, they will have breakfast and go for a hike. They will eat lunch at the campsite and have options for games and crafts. Otters will meet at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park Special Use Area at 10:30am (past Loop 4 - see map). They will arrive shortly before lunch and have some activities for Otters then go on a hike after lunch. When they return, they will have the opportunity to play some games or do some crafts. We will have a dinner and group campfire Saturday night. On Sunday, we will eat breakfast, clean up the campsite, pack our things, and head home. We should return home by 12pm on October 13th. This is a family-oriented camp-out, however, there will be some activities during the afternoon that are for the Timberwolf Park and Otter Raft. The campsite will be divided into family and scout halves, with shared space in the middle. All Timberwolves will be sharing tents on the scouts side. Otters will have the option of sharing a tent with other Otters or staying with their parent(s). In keeping with BPSA-US Youth Protection Policy, no adults are allowed to enter scout tents except in case of an emergency. Children cannot share a tent with an unrelated adult. We also ask that camp chairs and other extra camping gear be kept on the family side of the camp-out until we are settled around the campfire in the evening. At the campfire, we ask that the scouts sit on sit-upons (we will have materials) near the fire and parents sit behind them. Other Information: We are looking for more 2- and 3-person tents and sleeping pads to accommodate campers.

2 October 2013 Camp-Out Quick Facts: Timberwolves & Pathfinders leave Friday, October 11th at 5:45pm from First Unitarian Church, 5007 Waterman Blvd, St Louis, MO Meet no later than 5:30pm. NOTE: This puts our arrival at the campground after sunset (6:28pm). Please be prepared with flashlights and lanterns. Otters meet at Johnson Shut-Ins State Park Special Use Area west of Loop 4 (see map), Saturday, October 12th at 10:30am. For those meeting scouts, we return Sunday, October 13 at 12pm to Buder Branch - St. Louis Public Library, 4401 Hampton Ave., St Louis, MO. Please note the difference in the return point! We need a signed liability waiver and medical release form permission slip for every scout. We will have extras at departure but it needs to be signed by a parent/guardian. The cost of this campout for each individual includes campground fees ($4/person/weekend) as all food Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. We will be cooking and dining communally. There will be vegetarian and omnivore options. If you have additional dietary limitations, please plan accordingly. Otherwise, please do not bring additional food for scouts. If there are food allergies, please let us know. Directions from 1st Unitarian: Kingshighway south to McRee. Left on McRee, right on Vandeventer, merge onto I-44E. Take exit 290A to I- 55S to exit 175B onto US-67S to Bonne Terre/Farmington. Take MO-221W exit to Doe Run/Farmington. Turn right onto MO-221, continue on Hwy NN, turn right onto MO-21N. Take 2nd left onto Hwy N, turn right on Hwy MM. Turn left onto County Road 215/Taum Sauk Village Rd. Turn left into the Park.

You don't need much, and what you do need you should try to pack into soft-sided bags like backpacks or duffels. Two smaller bags is better than one large wheeled suitcase because transporting all that to camp gets tricky

5 BPSA's Youth Protection Along with our policy stated in our "Code of Ethics & Youth Protection Guidelines", the BPSA has adopted the methods and policies listed below to help provide additional safety for our scouts and leaders at the group level. Two-Deep Leadership is required everywhere. Two registered Leaders, or one registered leader and another adult, at least one of which must be over 21 years of age are required at every event, activity or outing. For groups that are coed, boys and girls, at least one male and one female adult must be present, with at least one of them being 21 years or older. There are a few instances, such as patrol meetings or day hikes by Pathfinder age youth, when the presence of adult leaders is not required; but this should only be considered after appropriate training, guidance and approval by the group's leadership. One-on-one contact between adults and scouts is prohibited. In situations that require personal, one on one discussions, training or work, the activity should be conducted in view of other adults, leaders and scouts. Separate accommodations for adults and scouts is required. When camping, no youth is permitted to sleep in a tent with an adult other than his/her own parent or guardian. Camping and activity sites used should accommodate separate toilet and shower facilities for males and females as well. When this is not available, appropriate times for scheduling usage should be adopted, or a similar policy put in place. Separate accommodations for males and females on outings. Since BPSA is a co-ed organization, both youth and adult males and females are not permitted to sleep in the same tent. Local Scout Groups handle coed scouting in two different ways at the Pathfinder (ages 11 to 17) (generally): Separate Patrols for boys and girls - while still able to interact, patrols are either all male or all female. Mixed Patrols for boys and girls - this is possible; but tenting arrangements within the patrol can not have males and females in the same tent together. The only exception to this rule is if the male and female are adults and married. Privacy of youth and adults is protected. The privacy of our scouts and the adults should be respected during situations such as changing clothes and showering. Intrusion in those situations should only when the health and safety of the individual is at stake. This includes the inappropriate use of cameras or phones for taking pictures of individuals during private moments. No secret groups or organizations. The BPSA does not allow the creation of secret or private groups or activities within the program. All areas of our program should be open and observable by parents if desired. No hazing. No bullying. Physical hazing and initiations are prohibited in any BPSA related scouting activity. Verbal, physical or cyber bullying are also prohibited. Adult leaders should be aware of youth leaders and the methods and techniques they are using to ensure that these safety precautions and those in the BPSA policies are being followed Appropriate attire for all activities. No skinny-dipping during water events or revealing bathing suits are not appropriate for scouting activities. Local Scout Groups are responsible for enforcing BPSA Youth Protection policies. Adult leaders are responsible for monitoring the behavior of youth members and interceding if necessary. Parents of youth members who do misbehave should be informed and asked to help.
