INSTALLERS AND USERS: Please thoroughly read this owners manual before installing the Paraflex Mount System, and before assembling and operating the Paraflex Monoflex Umbrella. The Paraflex Warranty does not cover damage caused by incorrect installation, wind, or wrongful use of the product. All users must be properly trained in operation and wind guidelines. Once installed, always use COMMON SENSE WIND GUIDELINES: If it is too windy to be outside enjoying the day, it is best to lower/collapse the Umbrella Frame w/ Fabric Canopy. It is also important to keep it lowered/collapsed when unattended. See manufacturer's limited warranty, care and maintenance on page 14. In the tilted position the Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy will catch the wind, and therefore is rated at half the above wind speed. Note that WIND IS NEVER A CONSTANT FORCE and wind gusts can be twice the average wind speed. It is therefore always recommended to either remove the Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy from the Flexible Arm/Holder or collapse the Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy on the Flexible Arm/Holder during the night and whenever unattended for extended periods of time. The Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy must also be removed or collapsed in the event of heavy rain, thunderstorms, hail or any other severe weather conditions. Damage due to wind, severe weather conditions or improper use is explicitly excluded from warranty coverage. 4
A INSTALL PARAFLEX MOUNT SYSTEM A1: You purchased one of four Mount Systems for the Paraflex Monoflex Umbrella. Locate your Mount System box(es) and identify the mount components and the Mount System Installation Instructions. Before assembling the Paraflex Monoflex Umbrella, install the Mount System using the instructions found in the Mount System box. B SECURE THE SINGLE/DOUBLE POLE TO THE MOUNT SYSTEM B1: Locate the Flexible Arm/Holder box and identify these items: 1. 1X Flexible Arm/Holder (F) 2. 1X Ziploc bag containing: 1X 5mm Allen Wrench (T1) - Required Tool 1X Clamp Handle (F4) 3. 1X box labeled "Mono-Hinge" containing: 1X Mono-Hinge Assembly (M) B2: Locate the Single/Double Pole (PS) box. After removing the Single/Double Pole from the box and unwrapping the protective packaging, slide it onto the Spigot (SP). NOTE: The Spigot is part of the Mount System you purchased and should already be attached to the top of your chosen Mount System. B3: Use the 5mm Allen Wrench (T1) to tighten the Set Screw (PS3) at the bottom of the Pole Section (PS1). 5
C ATTACH THE MONO-HINGE ASSEMBLY TO THE SINGLE/DOUBLE POLE C1: Remove the Pole Top Cap (PS2) from the top of the Pole Section (PS1). C2: Open the small box labeled "Mono-Hinge" and remove the Mono-Hinge Assembly (M). This component is made up of multiple parts, as shown in the Parts Diagram exploded view on page 4. You will find the Backer Plate (H1) and Blocker (H2) taped to the Mono-Hinge Assembly, demonstrating how it slides into the Pole Section (PS1). C3: (a) Remove the tape from the Mono-Hinge Assembly (M). (b) Hold all parts together in the same manner they were taped, in preparation for sliding into the track of the Pole Section (PS1), making sure the Quick-Release Clamp (H12) is positioned on the bottom side of the Mono-Hinge Assembly. (c) Slide the Mono-Hinge Assembly into the top of the track of the Pole Section. C4: Position the Mono-Hinge Assembly (M) at the desired height. For optimal ground clearance, position it at the very top of the Pole Section (PS1). NOTE: For installation purposes you may choose to place the Mono-Hinge Assembly at a comfortable working height, and then move it higher when ready for use. C5: (a) Tighten the top Blocker Screw (H3). (b) Tighten the bottom Blocker Screw (H3). C6: (a) Remove the Quick-Release Clamp (H12) and the Bottom Hinge Cylinder (H10) by turning the Quick-Release Clamp counterclockwise. (b) The second image shows the Mono-Hinge Assembly (M) installed in the Pole Section (PS1) after removing these parts. C7: (a) Use the 5mm Allen Wrench (T1) to loosen the Bottom Hinge Screw (H11) by turning it counterclockwise two complete turns. (b) Push the Bottom Hinge Plate (H9) to one side. 6
D ATTACH THE FLEXIBLE ARM/HOLDER TO THE MONO-HINGE ASSEMBLY D1: Before performing step D2, it is important for the two Mono-Hinges (H4a/H4b) to be oriented in a straight line as in illustration at right. D2: (a) Hold the Flexible Arm/Holder (F) in a V position (instead of having it fully extended). Perfectly align the two Mono-Hinges (H4a/H4b), then tilt the Flexible Arm/Holder up and slide it onto the Top Hinge Cylinder (H6) and into position. (b) The Flexible Arm/Holder is now held in place by the Top Hinge Cylinder and the two Mono-Hinges are properly aligned. (See D1 for proper alignment.) D3: (a) Slide the Bottom Hinge Plate (H9) back into position. (b) The far right image shows the Flexible Arm/Holder (F) fully inserted in the Mono-Hinge Assembly (M). D4: Re-install the Quick-Release Clamp (H12) and Bottom Hinge Cylinder (H10) through the Bottom Hinge Plate (H9) and into the Mono-Hinge (H4b). Tighten the Quick-Release Clamp by turning it clockwise until it is held in place. D5: (a) Using the Allen Wrench (T1), tighten the Bottom Hinge Screw (H11). (b) Continue to tighten until the Bottom Hinge Plate (H9) is just flush with the Mono-Hinges (H4a/H4b). Do not overtighten. D6: Tighten the Top Hinge Screw (H7) until it just touches the side of the Top Hinge Cylinder (H6) or 1/4 turn tighter. Turn it in either direction until proper alignment of the two Mono-Hinges (H4a/H4b) is achieved. To test for proper tension, move the Flexible Arm/Holder (F) from side to side. If you notice the Mono-Hinges binding, the Top Hinge Screw is too tight. Loosen it until the Mono-Hinges are no longer binding. NOTE: If the Top Hinge Screw is NOT properly adjusted, damage to the hinges can result. 7
D7: (a) Finish tightening the Quick Release Clamp (H12) by turning it clockwise. (b) Lock the Flexible Arm/Holder (F) in place by pushing the Quick-Release Clamp up. Optimal adjustment is achieved when it requires firm pressure to push the Quick-Release Clamp into a near horizontal position. D8: The center of the Flexible Arm/Holder (F) has two Mono-Hinges (both H4a). These may also require adjustments: (a) Push down the Quick-Release Clamp (H12) and move the Flexible Arm Holder (F) into the fully extended position. If the Mono-Hinges begin to bind, check the Top and Bottom Hinge Screws (H7/H11) to ensure they are not over-tightened (see step D5). Adjust slightly until Mono-Hinges are aligned properly and the Flexible Arm/Holder swings freely. (b) Push the Quick-Release Clamp up, locking the Flexible Arm/ Holder in place. NOTE: Unless moving the Flexible Arm/Holder to a new position, it is important to have the Quick-Release Clamps in the locked position. D9: Once the Flexible Arm/Holder (F) is properly attached to the Mono-Hinge Assembly (M), move it the desired height. Loosen both Blocker Screws (H3), and standing on a step stool or ladder if necessary, use two hands to slide the Flexible Arm/Holder to the top of the Pole Section (PS1) or to desired height. Re-tighten the Blocker Screws. NOTE: When re-tightening the Blocker Screws, lift the Flexible Arm/Holder at the center to remove weight from the Mono-Hinge Assembly. Tighten top Blocker Screw first, then bottom Blocker Screw. Repeat process until both screws are completely tight. D10: Replace Pole Top Cap (PS2). D11: Attach the Clamp Handle (F4) to the Clamp Assembly (F3): (a) Properly align the Clamp Handle in relation to the Clamp Assembly as shown in the first image to the right. (b) Push the Clamp Handle into the molded grooves until the small plastic nubs on the handle snap into place. 8
E USING THE UMBRELLA WITHOUT THE ZIPPER FUNCTION (OPTION 1) IN OPTION 1, the Bottom Hub (U2) is mounted ABOVE the Clamp Assembly (F3). The entire Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy (U) is then completely removed from the Flexible Arm/Holder (F) when not in use. In this option the zipper function is not used. In OPTION 2, the Bottom Hub is mounted BELOW the Clamp Assembly. The zipper function is then used to allow the Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy to be collapsed on the Flexible Arm/Holder, where it stays folded when not in use. 14 5 WARRANTY, CARE AND MAINTENANCE CARE & MAINTENANCE The umbrella structure and hardware must be cleaned by spraying with fresh water on occasion to remove dirt and dust build-up. Use a soft cotton cloth or chamois to wipe down the anodized surfaces as well as the components and hardware. Avoid using a scourer or abrasive materials as this could affect the integrity of the surface finishes. If in a marine/seaside environment, the maintenance procedures described above must be followed more frequently. Problems resulting from failure to maintain the products are not covered under warranty. WARRANTY ON METAL, UV RESISTANT NYLON AND ALUMINUM PARTS Umbrosa NV warrants to the consumer that the Paraflex product is free from manufacturer defects in material or workmanship for a period of three (3) years from the date of original purchase when used in compliance with directions as outlined in the manufacturer s instructions, which includes reasonable and necessary maintenance by the consumer. Warranty does not include normal wear and tear of product. Umbrosa takes no responsibility for incorrect use or assembly related to installation area, consistency of supports and relative hardware used, and capacity of mounting surfaces. Failure to follow the given assembly, maintenance, use and care instructions will void the product warranty. In case of manufacturing defects in material or workmanship, Umbrosa NV, agrees to, at their discretion, send the replacement part for all defective parts. SUNBRELLA CANOPY FABRIC MAINTENANCE AND WARRANTY The Fabric Canopy should be cleaned regularly before substances such as dirt, soot, roof particles, etc. are allowed to accumulate and become embedded in the fabric. The Fabric Canopy can be easily cleaned without being removed from the Umbrella Frame, simply brush off any loose dirt particles. Hose down and clean with a mild solution of natural soap in lukewarm water (no more than 100 F/35 C). Rinse thoroughly to remove soap. With the Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy open, allow to air dry. At the end of the season, the Fabric Canopy should be thoroughly cleaned before storing. Strictly follow washing instructions indicated above. Never store the Fabric Canopy in damp condition. Make sure the Fabric Canopy is absolutely dry when putting into winter storage. Be sure to properly fold the Fabric Canopy when collapsed to eliminate abrasion. Consider using the Paraflex Protection Cover Bag (sold separately) to reduce required cleaning and to extend the life of your Fabric Canopy. There is a five (5) year limited warranty on the integrity of the Sunbrella fabric, including degradation and UV resistance (discoloration). The following items are excluded from the warranty: breakage of the zipper and loosening of the seams. See Page 15 for detailed Sunbrella Canopy Fabric Care and Maintenance. FLEXIBLE ARM/HOLDER MAINTENANCE The Paraflex Flexible Arm/Holder (F) is designed to have a slight declination. Normal declination is approximately 2-1/2 to 3" from the Single/Double Pole (PS) connection to the end of the Flexible Arm/Holder. The amount of declination will vary a small amount depending on how far the Flexible Arm/Holder is extended and how much the screws supporting the hinges have been tightened. Wind can cause the screws to become loose over time and can cause damage to the hinge components. It is therefore important to periodically check the screws and adjust if necessary. If you notice the Flexible Arm/Holder declining more than normal, remove the Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy (U) from the Clamp Assembly (F3) and check for proper screw tension at all hinge connections. All screws shown in the top two images to the right play a significant role in declination. Follow the directions below if declination increases over time. Make adjustments at the pole connection first and then adjust the hinges at the center of the Flexible Arm/Holder. Use the provided 5mm Allen Wrench to adjust and secure all connections. TOP PHOTO: 1. The primary function of the Blocker Screws (H3) is to prevent the Flexible Arm/Holder (F) from sliding up or down the Single/Double Pole (PS). They also affect the amount of declination. While gently pushing up on the Back Flexible Arm/Holder Section (F1), use the 5mm Allen Wrench (T1) to tighten the bottom Blocker Screw as much as possible. 2. Tighten the top Blocker Screw (H3). Repeat until both Blocker Screws are completely tight. 3. Tighten the Bottom Hinge Screw (H11) until the Bottom Hinge Plate (H9) is just flush with the Mono- Hinges (H4a/H4b). If the Bottom Hinge Screw (H11) is too tight, it will be difficult to move the Flexible Arm/Holder (F) after opening/unlocking the Quick-Release Clamp (H12). 4. With the Quick-Release Clamp (H12) opened/unlocked, tighten the Top Hinge Screw (H7) until it touches the Top Hinge Cylinder (H6). If the Top Hinge Screw (H7) is tightened more than 1/4 turn after the screw head comes in contact with the Top Hinge Cylinder (H6), the Mono-Hinges (H4a/H4b) could begin to bind as shown in the BOTTOM PHOTO, causing a bumpy motion when moving the Flexible Arm/Holder (F). If this happens, loosen the Top Hinge Screw (H7) until a smoother movement is achieved. If the Top Hinge Screw (H7) is too tight, it will be difficult to adjust the position of the Flexible Arm/Holder (F) after the Quick-Release Clamp (H12) is opened/unlocked. MIDDLE PHOTO: Repeat steps 3 and 4 at the point where the Mono-Hinges (H4a/H4b) meet at the center of the Flexible Arm Holder (F). IMPORTANT TIPS FOR USING AND STORING 1. Always open/unlock both Quick-Release Clamps before trying to adjust the position of the Flexible Arm/Holder to eliminate damage to the hinges and screws. 2. Both Quick-Release Clamps should be kept in the closed/locked position after the Flexible Arm/Holder is placed in a desired position. This keeps the Flexible Arm/Holder in place, provides critical support to the hinges (preventing damage), and decreases the amount of declination. 3. The Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy should always be removed from the Clamp Assembly or collapsed (using the zipper function). When not in use or unattended, the Flexible Arm/Holder should be folded against the Single/Double Pole with both Quick Release Clamps in the closed/locked position. 4. The Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy will catch more wind in the tilt position. If using in windier conditions, keep in the horizontal position. 5. When storing, do not drop the Umbrella Frame w/ Canopy on the ends of the Spokes (U8a) when storing. Dropping may cause the Canopy Protector End Pieces (U5) to break. 14
6 SUNBRELLA CANOPY FABRIC CARE AND CLEANING One of the best ways to keep Sunbrella fabric looking good and to delay deep or vigorous cleaning is to properly maintain the fabric. This can be accomplished by simply brushing off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabric, wiping up spills as soon as they occur or spot cleaning soon after stains occur. GENERAL OR LIGHT CLEANING Brush off any loose dirt. Prepare a cleaning solution of 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water (less than 100 F/38 C). Use a sponge or a soft bristle brush to clean. Allow cleaning solution to soak into fabric. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue. Allow fabric to air dry. SPOT CLEANING Apply a light mist of mild soap and water using a spray bottle. Work the solution into the stain by lightly scrubbing the area with a sponge or very soft bristle brush. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue. Blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel or sponge. Wet-vacuum or blot excess water. Air dry. Repeat until all soap residue is removed. HAND WASHING Soak fabric in a solution of 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of lukewarm water (less than 100 F/38 C). Use a sponge or a soft bristle brush as necessary. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue. Allow fabric to air dry. MACHINE WASHING Machine wash in cold water (less than 100 F/38 C). Depending on wash load size, use normal amounts of mild laundry soap and add 1 cup of bleach. Allow fabric to air dry. Over time, frequent washing will cause the fabric repellant finish to be lost. Always retreat fabric. HEAVY CLEANING FOR STUBBORN STAINS AND MILDEW Sunbrella fabric does not promote mildew growth, however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances that are not removed from the fabric. To clean mildew, or other stubborn stains: Prepare a solution of 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup of mild soap per gallon of clean water. Spray on entire area and allow to soak into the fabric for 15 minutes. Remove stain with a sponge, clean towel or very soft bristle brush. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue. Allow fabric to air dry. If stain and/or mildew is severe, increase bleach quantities. See stain chart on for removal of specific stains. Sunbrella fabrics have a special finish that enhances water repellency. The finish is designed to last for several years of normal use, but may be refreshed after a thorough cleaning or extended use. PROFESSIONAL CLEANERS In evaluating the services of a professional firm, you should inquire about the firm s experience in working with Sunbrella fabrics and knowledge of cleaning and re-treatment requirements. DO NOT dry clean Sunbrella fabrics. HELPFUL HINTS Protect the area around your Sunbrella fabric when using a bleach solution, as bleach may discolor non-sunbrella fabrics. Always rinse Sunbrella thoroughly to completely remove bleach. Sunbrella fabric air-dries very quickly. Machine drying is not necessary. If fabric has some wrinkling, use an iron, if necessary, but only on the synthetic setting. As some irons exceed the recommended 100 F/38 C temperature on the synthetic setting, test a small inconspicuous area before ironing entire piece. Synthetic fabric heat settings normally do not exceed 150 F/66 C. DO NOT use a steamer or iron set to steam setting. 303 HIGH TECH FABRIC GUARD Re-treating the fabric for ease of cleaning: As part of the finishing process, Sunbrella fabrics are treated with a fluorocarbon finish, which enhances water repellency. This finish is designed to last for several years, but must be replenished after a thorough cleaning. Based on test results, Glen Raven recommends 303 High Tech Fabric Guard as the preferred re-treatment product for Sunbrella fabrics. Fabrics should be re-treated after thorough cleaning or after five years of use. Applying 303 High Tech Fabric Guard 303 should be applied to Sunbrella fabrics after each thorough cleaning, which typically removes the original finish and reduces the fabric's water repellency. Clean Sunbrella fabric, using one of the cleaning methods. Allow Sunbrella to completely air dry. Apply 303 Fabric Guard in a well-ventilated area following instructions on the container. Apply 303 in a thin, even coat and allow fabric to dry completely. Apply a second thin, even coating of 303. (Two light coatings are more effective in restoring fabric water resistance than a single heavy coating. A 15-ounce bottle provides coverage of up to 50 square feet of fabric.) For more information, visit Glen Raven Custom Fabrics, LLC, 1831 North Park Avenue, Glen Raven, NC USA t / f SUNBRELLA IS A REGISTERED TRADEMARK OF GLEN RAVEN, INC. 15
