THE EFFECTS OF WIND AND RAIN ON AN AWNING ARE UNPREDICTABLE AND CAN CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE AWNING. IF WIND OR EXTENDED PERIODS OF RAIN ARE EXPECTED, ROLL UP THE AWNING. WARNING KEEP ALL SOURCES OF HEAT AND FLAME AWAY FROM THE AWNING CANOPY. FABRIC IS NOT FIRE-PROOF AND CAN BURN IF LEFT IN CONTACT WITH ANY FLAME OR HEAT SOURCE. CAUTION IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT IF LEAVING THE AWNING UNATTENDED FOR A LENGTH OF TIME, RETRACT THE AWNING TO AVOID UNEXPECTED CLIMATE CONDITIONS. Safety Notes: The following should always be observed when assembling the awning: Always disconnect power before working on or around electrical lines. Always wear appropriate safety equipment (i.e. goggles). Always use appropriate lifting devices and/or helpers when lifting or holding heavy objects. Do not over tighten fasteners (i.e. screws). Soft materials can be "stripped out" and lose the ability to grip and hold.
3 PRODUCT OVERVIEW The clean molded lines of Carefree s Residential Patio Awning are stylized and built with Carefree's attention to quality, value, style and performance. The Carefree Residential Patio Awning is a sure and economical way to provide shade to a deck or patio. The awning design incorporates many positive design features: Simple manual operation. No springs to deal with. No locks required. The manual crank holds the awning securely against billowing during wind. When the awning is extended, the arms can be left on the wall or rotated down and placed in the carport position (vertical). The pitch can be set to provide the best shade and rain runoff. Installation is simple. The fabric is attached using a standard awning rail. Each arm is attached at the top and secured in a spring loaded bracket at the bottom. COMPONENT CHECKLIST The following parts are included in the awning package. General Layout. REQUIRED PRE-INSTALLATION PREPARATION Prior to installing the awning inspect the mounting area and prepare the mounting surface if required. 1. Inspect the mounting area for obstructions to avoid (i.e. lights, exhaust vent etc.). If necessary, adjust the awning position so that the awning will not interfere with equipment or protrusions. 2. Layout the location of the awning. It is recommended that the awning be mounted as high as possible for best use of the variable pitch and to provide head clearance when the awning is extended. The awning rail must be mounted a minimum of 2" below the overhang and 6" above the door/windows The arms and lower mounting bracket requires a minimum flat area measured down from the centerline of the awning rail. Minimum area per arm = 81" x 3 1/2". 3. Examine the mounting surface material. If the surface is solid wood (3/4" thick or more), the awning may be mounted directly onto the surface. Go to page 2. This does not include cedar shake siding. If the surface has siding mounted on solid wood (plywood) that is attached to the structural frame and the siding is thin enough that the mounting screws can go through the brackets and wall covering and into the wood, the awning can be mounted directly onto the surface. Go to page 2. For soft materials such as stucco, fiberboard siding, siding mounted on styrofoam etc., mount a 1 x 4 board for the awning rail position. Attach the board to the structural frame (studs). Boards and screws are installer furnished. For brick and concrete, mount a 1 x 4 board on the mounting surface for the awning rail. 1 x 4 boards mounted for the awning rail, should extend 3" outside the width of the awning. (width of awning + 6"). Mounting boards for the lower bracket should extend between structural studs. NOTE: 1 x 4 boards and attaching hardware are not included with awning. RA r1
5 INSTALLING AN AWNING RAIL 1. Mark the position of the awning rail with a chalk line. The awning rail must be level. 2. Seal the back of the rail with silicone sealant or putty tape. 3. Align the awning rail onto the wall and secure with the #8 x 1" screws. 4. Use a screwdriver to spread open one end of the awning rail on the installation side. Spread open the end of the awning rail 5. File any sharp edges or burrs from the end of the rail. This will help protect the awning fabric from damage during installation. 6. Spray inside the awning rail track with silicone lubricant. Figure 2. Installing the Awning Rail. T0012a ASSEMBLING THE AWNING 1. On a flat surface, layout the arms and roller tube assembly. Note: Position the roller tube with the fabric oriented as shown, over the top the the edge toward the house. 2. Slide the idler end plug (LH arm) onto the roller tube. Align the fabric access slot in the cap with the roller tube slot w/ the polyrod. Attach the cap to the roller tube using three (3) #10 x 5/8 square drive truss head screws. 3. Repeat for the RH arm. #10 x 5/8 Square Drive Screw (3 per end cap) Align the Cap Access Slot and the Roller Slot w/ the Polyrod Figure 3. Assembling the Awning. Orient Roller Tube with Fabric Winding Over the Top RA004 MOUNT THE LOWER BRACKETS 1. On the awning rail, mark the position of the centerlines of the arms. Ensure that the arms will not interfere with any lights, vents or other obtrusions. 2. Using a non-permanent method of marking such as a chalk line, mark a perpendicular line from the awning rail down to the floor line. This is the centerline of the arms. 3. Position and attach the bottom mounting brackets using 1/4 x 2" lag screws.. The brackets should be centered on the lines made in the previous step and MUST be attached to the structural studs. NOTE: After starting the screw but before tightening, put silicone sealant around the hole and threads to seal the screw. 6 MOUNTING THE AWNING 1. Measure the distance from the awning rail to the bottom mounting brackets. 2. On each arm, adjust the arm length so the distance from the center of the roller to the foot is about equal to the measurement in step 1. To adjust arm length, open the arm latch and slide the lower channel up or down as required. Close the latch and slide the lower channel until the locking pin clicks into the nearest positioning hole. The next step will require two people. One to feed the canopy into the awning rail and hold one arm, the second to hold the second arm while sliding the canopy into position. For longer awnings, a third person may be beneficial. Figure 5. Setting the Arm. 3. Slide the canopy polyrod into the awning rail. Continue to "walk" the arms and canopy down the rail until the arms are in line with the centerline marks made previously. Tip: Slightly open one end of the rail, then spray inside the awning rail track with a dry silicone lubricant. This will aid in sliding the fabric into the rail. 4. Lift the bottom of the arm up and secure the foot into the bottom bracket. The foot has a horizontal pin that goes under the springloaded lever of the bottom bracket. Repeat for both arms. 5. Use the manual crank and open the awning inches to provide access to the upper mounting brackets. 1/4 x 3 Lag Screws Arm Latch Spring Loaded Lever Awning Arm PL005 Mounting Bracket 6. Loosen the black locking knob on the upper brace. 7. Slide the upper portion of the brace up so that the upper mounting bracket straddles the awning rail. 8. Center the bracket on the arm centerline. 9. Attach the upper bracket using two (2) 1/4 x 3 lag screws. The screws must go into the house structure or support boards mounted previously. The screws can go through the flat portion of the awning rail. NOTE: After starting the screw but before tightening, put silicone sealant around the hole and threads to seal the screw. 10. Repeat steps 6 through 9 for the other arm. Upper Brace Locking Knob Figure 6. Upper Bracket. PL007 Installing the Stop Bolt 1. Retract the awning. 2. Observe if the centerline of the roll bar is level with or slightly higher than the centerline of the awning rail. The bottom of the roller tube must not be higher than the awning rail. 3. Adjust the arm length as required. Open the arm latch and slide the upper channel up or down as required. Close the latch and slide the upper channel until the locking pin clicks into the nearest positioning hole. 4. Mark the position of the stop hole that is directly below the upper channel. 5. Slide the 5/16 x 1/2 socket head cap screw into the stop hole and secure on the inside using the 5/16 nut with the serrated washer. 6. Repeat for other arm. 8 OPERATION Operation of the Carefree Manual Patio Awnings is simple and straight forward. Please observe the safety notes and cautions for best results. WARNING AWNINGS ARE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE SHADE AND PROTECTION FROM THE SUN. THE EFFECTS OF WIND AND RAIN ON AN AWNING ARE UNPREDICTABLE AND CAN CAUSE SEVERE DAMAGE TO THE AWNING AND/OR THE BUILDING. OPENING THE AWNING Brace Spring Latch Gear Loop Upper Brace Stand Inside the Awning Center Lock Extend Retract Locking Knob 1. Loosen the black knob on the upper brace of both arms 2. Insert the hook of the crank handle into the gear loop located on the right side of the awning. 3. Turn the handle counter clockwise to extend the awning. 4. Push the braces up to the top of the arms. The brace sliders have a small spring catch that latches into the end plugs when the braces are at the top of the arms. 5. While pressing outward on the roll bar to tension the fabric, tighten the black lock knob on the brace. Repeat for the other side. The crank handle may be extended or shortened by the twisting the center lock then sliding the handle in or out to the desired length. Tighten the center lock when finished. CAUTION Always use the support braces to hold the awning out in the extended position. Failure to use the braces may result in the awning collapsing possibly causing injury or damage to the awning or the building. Personal injury or damage may occur that will not be covered by warranty. RA r1
9 ADJUSTING THE PITCH 1. Open the arm latch. 2. Slide the upper arm channel out until the desired pitch is achieved. 3. Close the arm latch. It may be necessary to move the arm up and down slightly for the lock pin to snap into a position hole. 4. Repeat for other side. Arm Latch Stop Bolt Figure 10. Pitch Adjustment. SETTING THE ARMS IN THE CARPORT POSITION When it is desirable to have an open walkway from the side of the awning, the arms can be set in the carport (vertical) position. In this position, the arms are set perpendicular to the ground surface. CAUTION Before setting the arms in the carport position, disconnect any optional center rafters or rafters with rooms. Rotating the arms with the rafters attached can damage the rafters and awning. 1. Open the awning. 2. Ensure that the braces are locked into position and the black knobs are tightened. 3. While supporting the arm and roll bar, release the carport foot from the bottom support bracket. The latch is spring loaded. While holding the latch open, slide the arm from the bracket. 4. Set the arm perpendicular to the ground. 5. Adjust the awning height using the pitch adjustment described on page Repeat for the other arm. 7. If using the optional deck plates refer to page 5. Arm Latch Spring Loaded Lever RAIN RELEASE SETTING If the awning is extended during rain, position one arm at minimum pitch and the other arm at maximum pitch. This will provide slope to allow the water to run off and prevent pooling. Carport Position Normal Position Carport Foot Figure 11. Carport Position. PL010 PL011 CLOSING THE AWNING Figure 12. Rain Release. 1. Disconnect, remove and/or store any optional equipment that is used (i.e. rafters, hangers etc.) Follow the storage directions furnished with the particular option(s). 2. If the awning has been placed in the carport configuration: Swivel the arm back and lock the carport feet into the bottom mounting bracket. Repeat for the second arm. 3. Return the arm length to the storage length: Open the arm latch and slide the upper arm channel down to the stop bolt. Close the arm latch. Ensure that the lock pin snaps into the position hole. Repeat for the second arm. CAUTION The arm must be lowered to the stop bolt before rolling up the awning. Failure to lower the arm can cause damage to the arm channels. 4. Loosen the black lock knob for the brace r1 7 RA006
10 5. Disengage the spring latch for the brace (located on the top of the roller tube end plug) and slide the brace down the arm. It may be necessary to press out on the roll bar to ease the tension. Repeat for the second arm. 6. Insert the hook of the crank handle into the gear loop located on the right side of the awning. 7. Turn the handle clockwise to retract the awning. 8. Tighten the black lock knob on the braces. AWNING CARE Maintaining a Carefree Awning is easy. Just follow these basic steps: Always operate the awning according to the instructions. Periodically check that the fasteners are tight. Tighten if necessary. Keep the awning fabric and arms clean. FABRIC CARE CAUTION DO NOT USE OIL BASED CLEANERS OR ANY CAUSTIC, GRANULATED, OR ABRASIVE TYPE CLEANERS ON YOUR CAREFREE PRODUCT. 1. One of the best ways to keep the fabric looking good and to delay the need for deep or vigorous cleanings is to hose fabrics off on a monthly basis with clear water. This practice will help prevent dirt from becoming deeply imbedded in the fabric. In most environments, a thorough cleaning will be needed every two to three years. 2. When it s time for a thorough cleaning, the fabric can be cleaned while still on the awning frame. For Acrylic Fabric Use a stiff brush and warm water with soap. 3. When cleaning the fabric, it is important to observe the following: Always use a natural soap, never detergent. Water should be cold to lukewarm, never more than 100 F. Air-dry only. Never apply heat to the fabric. Always allow the fabric to dry thoroughly before rolling up the awning. Mildew Mildew is a fungus growth that looks like dirt. Vinyl coated polyester fabrics are mildew resistant because of a chemical biocide in the vinyl coating. Under ordinary conditions, mildew will not appear. However, in areas where high temperature and humidity are common, mildew can be a problem and required the material to be washed more frequently. Thoroughly rinse the fabric with clean water and allow to air dry completely before rolling up the awning. Pooling When water collects on the top of the fabric, this is known as "pooling". This can occur during inclement weather or if a running air conditioner discharges over the awning. The water is dumped when the awning is retracted. It is recommended that if water accumulates on the top; retract the awning in steps (8"-12") to dump the water. This will help prevent the fabric from stretching or distorting. ARM CARE The best method of keeping the arms and braces operating smoothly is to clean them. Dirt and debris can cause the channels not to slide easily. Periodically wash out the channels with running water (i.e. a hose) to keep them clean. If the channels still do not slide easily, lightly spray the inside of the channels with a dry silicone lubricant, after the arms have been cleaned and dried thoroughly. Locking knobs should be periodically loosened and removed then sprayed with a dry lubricant to prevent binding and locking r1
