1 Volume XXXII Issue 1 - January, 2012 The Oregon Antiquer Meeting January 28, 2012 Independence EAA Chapter 292 Hangar 12 Noon-Lunch Counting down - six months away from another great adventure - Oregon Air Tour an event I have looked forward to since my first Air Tour with the Oregon Antique and Classic Aircraft Club. Always a memorable flying experience! In 2002 Tom Bedell authored a brief history of the Oregon Air Tour (a reprint appears later in this issue). I have read this brief chronicle frequently to remind me of the original purpose of the Air Tour. Historically, the Air Tour had a dual purpose: 1) to introduce communities to general aviation by displaying aircraft 2) to give tour participants the opportunity to enjoy the hospitality of the visited communities. I believe these two goals have always been the objective of the individuals organizing this event. These were the main points that captured my interest in the Oregon Antique and Classic Club. The start of the 2012 Air Tour has been moved from our traditional Sunday to a Friday for three reasons: 1) The scheduled dates of the Arlington Airshow and EAA's OSHKOSH AIRVENTURE conflicted with our traditional dates; 2) We believed it would benefit our club to participate in the Airport Activity Day in Roseburg; and 3) It would allow club members who have yet to retire an opportunity to participate in the 2012 Air Tour without taking an entire week of vacation from their jobs. Following is a tentative synopsis of the 2012 Air Tour which will be presented at the January quarterly meeting. July 6 (F) - 10(Tu), 2012 July 6 Cottage Grove (Dan Cathey) Roseburg (Dave Olson) Lunch Kick-off dinner July 7th Roseburg (Dave Olson) 1) Participate in Airport Activity Day 2) Tour local wineries 3) Wildlife Safari tours 4) Graffiti Days car Show and events In early November, ten OACAC members met to begin the planning for our 2012 Oregon Air Tour. The major considerations during this phase of planning were to expose communities to antique and classic aircraft and general aviation; introduce Air Tour participants to the unique aspects of less visited communities; and, attract new members to the Oregon Antique and Classic Aircraft Club. With this in mind, we began our planning for the 2012 Oregon Air Tour. 2 The Oregon Antiquer July 8th Myrtle Creek (Bruce Harrington) Breakfast Prospect (Brian/Kaaren McGlynn) RON July 9th Chiloquin Brunch Christmas Valley (John /Roberta Sedey) RON BOB ELLIOTT OACAC Member & January Presenter Bob will be doing a PowerPoint presentation of his experience flying with the Iditarod Air Force. Bob has flown for July 10th Hermiston (Jon/Marilyn Husser) Final banquet Tim Talen, at our last quarterly meeting, suggested a flagship aircraft for the Air Tour. This reflects back to the 1930's - great concept! We are looking into identifying a flagship aircraft, whether it's a member's aircraft or a flyable museum aircraft. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, please let me know. To assist in funding several aspects of the Air Tour, such as advertising, transportation, facilities, a flagship aircraft, etc. I have, on behalf of the Antique and Classic Aircraft Club, applied for a grant from the Roseburg Chamber of Commerce. We should have a decision on whether or not the Oregon Air Tour will be offered a financial grant by February or March Whether or not this grant is accepted, if offered, will be decided by the membership at our January quarterly meeting. I would like to thank the Oregon Air Tour Committee for their work in putting together an exciting adventure for I'm certainly looking forward to another memorable Air Tour experience. the Iditarod Air Force (IAF) for 16 years. He has served as IAF GPS Route Coordinator and Safety Officer. Bob moved to Alaska in Now Bob and his wife, Aggie, share their time between Camas WA, where they live on Grove Field, and Willow AK where they have a cabin on Shirley Lake and a hangar on the airstrip. Bob is the AOPA Airport Volunteer for Grove Field and enjoys parttime flight instruction. He is a retired engineer who has had a passion for aviation since high school. He worked as a line-boy at a small grass airport in North Chicago where he received his private license at the age of 18. He has been flying for over 45 years and has about 6,700 flying hours. Bob has most of the ratings including, Rotorcraft, Airline Transport Pilot and Flight Instructor. He is partners in a 265 HP Cessna 180 on Landis 3600 skis and has a homebuilt bush plane. He has owned 13 airplanes, including 3 different Cessna 180s. You won t want to miss this presentation. Great pictures and fascinating information. Our first meeting of 2012 will be January 28th at the Independence Airport. 11:00 Directors' meeting 12:00 Lunch 1:00 Membership meeting 1:45 Presentation by Bob Elliott (see bio below) Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all! See you in January. Dave OREGON AIR TOUR HISTORY By Tom Bedell (Original appeared in The Anitquer July 2002) Much of what appears for the tours was gathered from several sources and written by Carol Skinner. Your editor (Tom Bedell was the editor at that time) has paraphrased some of it and included the summary of recent tours near the end. The first Pacific Northwest Air Tour took place July 29- August 8, It began at Pearson Field, Vancouver WA; covered 1,765 miles, visited 22 cities including nine 2

3 in WA, seven in OR and one in ID; and included about 35 planes. A sample of the aircraft were Great Lakes, Curtiss Robin, Student Prince biplane and an Aeroncapowered glider. From July 27 to August 10, 1931 the second annual PNW tour occurred, again leaving Pearson Field and visiting four cities in WA, nine in OR and one in ID. There were 87 official entries and included a Fleet biplane, Bach Tri-Motor, Bird, Ford Tri-Motor, Davis, American Eagle, Lambert Monocoupe, Boeing 40-B, Spartan, Waco Taperwing and a National Pinto built by the National Aircraft Corporation of Portland. In late July 1934 in conjunction with the Oregon Trail pageant, an air caravan from Portland formed of Sportsman Pilots, the forerunner of the Oregon Pilots Association, performed at the Eugene airport. It was known as the Honeymoon Tour because of two newlywed couples, one of whom was Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hofer (nee Dorothy Hester). Planes included Laird Wright Whirlwind, Fairchild 22, Curtiss Robin, Student Prince, Security, Fleet, Great Lakes, Bird Aeronca, Rupert Special and a Meussig Special Air Tour Flag Ship-a Boeing 247 The 1939 Northwest Air Tour originated in Albany and featured Tex Rankin and his Hollywood Aces. It began August 5 with a 2 1/2-hour air show with Tex providing an hour of the show in two different planes a Great Lakes and a Ryan STA monoplane in which he had won the 1937 World s Aerobatic Championship. By noon August 5, 70 planes were on the ground at Albany with more expected. Official greeter was former Governor Charles H. Martin, who arrived in Albany in a United Airlines plane serving as tour flagship. Governor Charles Sprague greeted the tour in Portland the following day. On succeeding days the tour landed at The Dalles, Prineville, Eugene, Salem, Roseburg, Medford and Klamath Falls. The Oregon Antiquer The tour was described by Evelyn Burleson, flying an Eaglerock, the only woman commercial pilot on the tour. Albany had the best conditions with Salem second. At Portland there was so much activity with passenger rides that you were taking your life in your hands each time you made a takeoff or landing. Prineville was the headache of the tour with ships lining up for takeoff, visibility was zero and pilots expected to have another ship taxi into them, land on them or ram them on takeoff. Fortunately there were no accidents. However, Tex Rankin ran into some hard luck when six of the eight bolts holding the prop from his Great Lakes broke in flight. He used the prop from his Ryan and not unexpectedly it did not perform right. Neither did his red smoke. Despite the mishaps he put on his portion of the air show. At The Dalles, rattlesnakes were found on the field. The next leg to Eugene was hampered by extremely bad smoke from forest fires. Pilots had to return to The Dalles and come south over Mt. Hood. The next day they doubled back to Salem where there was much passenger hopping. On the way to Roseburg Mrs. Burleson lost brakes on her plane and ground looped. The two parachute jumpers on the tour missed the field due to tricky air. On the next leg to Medford, foggy conditions and rough, unfamiliar terrain were challenges. The tour concluded at Klamath Falls where a banquet complete with orchestra and floorshow was held. Mrs. Burleson said it was a grand finale and an appropriate ending for such a grand event as the Oregon Air Tour. As we in the OACAC know, there was a huge gap after 1939 when no Oregon Air Tours occurred. Fortunately, OACAC picked up the ball and started them again in 1984 with tours each even-numbered year since. Just for the record, here are the airports visited in all our past tours. 1984: Cottage Grove, Grants Pass, Ashland, Klamath Falls, Sunriver, Prineville, Hermiston, The Dalles, Hood River, Newberg, Albany, Cottage Grove. 1986: North Bend, Tillamook, McMinnville, Sisters, Pendleton, Baker City, Ontario, John Day, Burns, Christmas Valley, Cottage Grove. 1988: Independence, Camas (WA), Newberg, Florence, Cottage Grove, Prospect, Montague (CA), Ashland, Klamath Falls, Sunriver, Sisters, Albany, Cottage Grove. 1990: Cottage Grove, Florence, Tillamook, Astoria, Pearson Field (WA), Hood River, Hermiston, John Day, Cline Falls, Sisters, Sunriver, Montague (CA), Ashland, Medford. 3

6 The Oregon Antiquer OACAC Quarterly Meeting Minutes submitted by Jeanne Wildman October 22, 2011 at Lebanon State S3O Marilyn Husser began speaking at 1:00PM with a little different format to our meeting today. Marilyn introduced Larry and Danna Knox and thanked them for hosting our meeting at their facility and for arranging a catered lasagna lunch by Bill Pavlosec. will be dropped as members and/or advertisers. Two new members signed up today! Dorothy Austin was absent today so there is no merchandise report. It was noted that she attended a Stearman Flyin and sold $ of merchandise! Old Business 1) Our webmaster, Marilyn Husser, has done a fantastic job on the club s website! Check it out at The subject has been revisited to The Oregon Antiquer. The majority of members would like to continue to receive the hard copy through the postal service. If you would like to receive it via the internet, please let Marilyn Husser know and she will make that happen. Our guests today were Mike and Christine Talbert from Independence Airpark who recently purchased a 1947 Navion; Bill Johnson from Tallman Airport, located between S3O and S12; and Bill and Jill Case from S3O who own a 1959 Comanche. Marilyn presented a slide show of the 2011 Fly-out to Lake Chelan & Stehekin Landing Lodge. It was a wonderful synopsis of the trip presented using our new projector and portable speaker system. It was clearly an enjoyable few days by many while doing a variety of activities in a most beautiful and interesting area of the eastern Cascades. President Dave Olson called the business meeting to order at 2:00PM. Dave also expressed thanks to our host and hostess Larry and Danna Knox. There was a motion and a second to accept the minutes of the July meeting. They were approved as published. There was a treasurer report by Bev Clark. Bev reported that we lost money on the annual Fly-in at Cottage Grove, but made a profit on the Lake Chelan Fly-out. We have purchased a projector and portable speaker system within the budget approved previously. Anyone interested in viewing a detailed financial report, contact Bev Clark. There was a motion and a second to accept the report. Marilyn Husser is the new Membership chair person. Unpaid members and advertisers have not been dropped as our bylaws state a deadline of March 31 because of this chair change. But as of March 31, 2012 those unpaid 6 2) We have purchased the portable announcing system and the projection system both being used at today s meeting. We are pleased with the improvement both have contributed to the quality of our presentations in video and audio. New Business 1) The meeting locations for 2012 meetings are: January Independence April Roseburg July Cottage Grove October Lebanon 2) A committee has been formed to brain storm about the concept for Air Tour Committee participants are Dave Olson, Bruce Harrington, Jon Husser, Alan Tolle, Dan Cathey, and Brian and Kaaren McGlynn. Some new ideas were mentioned with the general membership were: change the annual meeting location for the beginning of the air tour, use a hub and spoke concept for fly-outs and change the date entirely because of Oshkosh. Dave then asked members to write down and submit destinations of interest or submit ideas later by contacting one of those on the committee. 3) Dave Olson asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting at 2:40 PM. The motion was seconded and the meeting was adjourned. Dave then introduced Tim Talen to briefly talk about his summer adventure of flying the Rearwin Speedster to Oshkosh WI., Blakesburg IA, and to Reno NV. Tim proceeded to entertain us with details of his cross country flight to the above mentioned destinations. The Ragwood Refactory had recently completed the beautiful

We have 5 great faithful advertisers and would like to thank them for their continued support. If others would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please contact Marilyn Husser at mhusser@minetifber.com and put OACAC advertising in the subject line. 4th Quarter Treasurer s Report Beginning Balance: $ restoration of this airplane. The airplane did not disappoint as many people came out to enjoy it and to reminisce of past times. Tim had much weather to contend with as he began the flight through the Columbia Gorge. He flew through Kellogg ID, Forsythe MO, and Wilmer MN before reaching Wautoma, WI, and four days of rain at Oshkosh. The airplane stayed at Brodhead, WI until it was time for a friend, Chris Price, to fly it to the Blakesburg, IA Fly-in. Tim met him and the Rearwin there the first weekend in September. A beautiful array of antique airplanes were present, but none as fine as the Rearwin Speedster, awarded the Grand Champion for 2011! The trip continued on through howling winds in Wyoming, Logan UT and Elko NV to be on display at the Reno Air Races. Tim was grateful that the Cirrus engine, similar to the OX5, continued to run like a champ while flying through the desolate vastness of the Nevada desert. The airplane lives in Sonoma CA. Congratulations! Tim, and thank you for sharing your flying experiences with us!
