1 Change at Top 300 U.S. Airports -. Overall domestic passenger traffic growth remains flat over the last two years. That is the headline of consolidation and airline profitability. However, on an airport by airport basis there is much change within the domestic industry, with about half (148) of the top 300 airports experiencing growth in domestic passengers over the last year. And, while growth in smaller markets continues as LCC s such as Allegiant and Frontier continue to choose secondary airports, the 148 airports that saw growth last year run the gamut from the nation s smallest airports to some of the nation s largest. In fact, those 148 airports with growth represented 56% of domestic passenger traffic in the year ended September Among the top 50 growing airports are five of North Dakota s eight commercial airports, with Williston leading that pack, increasing its passenger totals 167% year-over-year. Trenton, NJ, tops the list, growing 2,715% year-over-year, in large part due to the airport adding Frontier Airlines in the fourth quarter of LCC airlines fueled growth at many airports in the top 50, including #4 Punta Gorda, #6 Latrobe, #7 Niagara Falls and #9 Plattsburgh. The largest airport among the top 50 growth airports was Charleston, SC, which increased traffic 7.8% year-overyear. Another recent change fueling growth at some airports is the conversion from turboprop aircraft to regional jet aircraft. Beaumont / Port Arthur, coming in at #2 on the list, is a great example. After losing all turboprop service to Houston, American Eagle began flying regional jets to Dallas / Fort Worth, with the result that passenger traffic increased 223.5% year over year. Other airports that have benefited from this trend include #3 Williston, #8 Santa Fe and #10 Dickinson. Airports such as Joplin and Garden City, although not in the top 300 airports by passenger ranking, also have benefited greatly from the introduction of regional jets to Essential Air Service airports. Comparing major airline hubs, Houston Intercontinental led in that category, coming in at #52, up 6.0% year-over-year. Charlotte (#65) increased its passenger traffic 5.1%, Denver (#70) was up 4.8% and Dallas / Fort Worth (#102) increased 2.8%. Consolidation, however, has taken its toll, as capacity has moved among airports. Airports with over 1,000,000 outbound O&D passengers who lost the most traffic include Milwaukee (#280), down 11.6%, Tucson, down 8.0%, Ontario, down 7.9%, Long Beach, down 7.8%, Washington Dulles, down 6.3% and Manchester, down 5.7%. Sixel Consulting Group believes that, because of the overall flattening of growth in the entire domestic market, it is harder today than it s ever been to recruit new service or keep the service you have. Demand for aircraft is very high and net new seats are hard to find. It is imperative, therefore, to redouble your efforts toward Air Service Development and Air Service Retention and Marketing because the competition is trying hard to get hold of your airplane (maybe even us)!
