Government accounts) for the month of July of banks in 233 Standard Metropolitan Statistical areas and other centers were $6,688.7 billion at a seasonally adjusted annual rate. This was 1.0 per cent higher than the previous month and ik.o per cent higher than July New York area banks reported a decrease of 1.6 per cent from the preceding month and an increase of 19.3 per cent over July a year ago. Compared to a year ago, debits at 6 Other Centers were up l6.1 per cent, and at 226 Centers the increase was 6.6 per cent. Demand deposit turnover increased slightly in July at 233 reporting centers, with the major portion of the increase occurring at banks in the 6 leading centers classification. New York banks reported a slight decline in turnover for the month. The July turnover rate for all reporting centers remained close to the average annual rate reported in the first 6 months of the year.
