1 September 2015 President's Message What a difference a year makes! Cooperative weather, good food, good media coverage, great organization, and lots to see and do resulted in over 75 cars showing up for our third annual Vintage Wheels at the Fort car show. Thanks to Barney Deden and his committee for planning and organizing this show. Also, a big thanks to everyone who showed up to help register cars, cook the food, provide vintage car rides, and otherwise help run things. From my observations, the participants and the public appeared to have a great time. I saw them participating in the vintage car rides, watching the Irish dancers, listening to the military band, looking at the cars and other displays, and just sitting around relaxing with old car friends in a beautiful setting. The show was without a doubt one of the most enjoyable car shows I have ever been a part of. I also noted that very few participants left early, which is always an indicator that people are enjoying themselves. To top off a great event, we even made some money by selling all of our concessions. Earlier this month, the Hanshaws led a group on a fabulous trip to Greenfield, Iowa. The group visited several interesting sites in the Greenfield/ Winterset area, and stayed at the historical Greenfield Inn. Thank you Gayle and Nancy for organizing a great trip. We wrapped up August with a fun and relaxing club picnic at the Cahalane s acreage near Plattsmouth. We had a great turnout and everyone seemed to have a good time as they relaxed, ate some great food, and enjoyed good company. Thank you Mike and Marilyn for hosting us. September will be another active month, with two opportunities to show our Model As to the public and promote the Meadowlark Club and our hobby. On September 13th we will be displaying our cars at Silver Ridge as we observe National Grandparents Day. This is another great opportunity to drive your Model A and publicly display it in a relaxed setting. On September 19th we celebrate International Model A Day by displaying our cars at Meadowlark Model A Ford Club, Omaha, NE Contents: September Events Grandparents Day Eat-out International Model A Day Events after September Eagles, Tractors, and Fords Highway Pickup Past Events Vintage Wheels at the Fort Greenfield Tour Club Picnic Tech Tip Member News Ads Arbor Lodge in Nebraska City. It promises to be a fun and relaxing event in another beautiful and historic setting. We can expect a large crowd throughout the day looking at and appreciating our cars. See you down the road, Greg Bowden September Tech Talk: Model A problems you should think about fixing before you put the Model A away for the winter. Meeting Treats Thanks to Melody Grigsby and Janet Graves for treats at the July meeting. September treats will be provided by Mary McKinney and Marilyn Cahalane. 1

3 SEPTEMBER Events Grandparents Day Sunday, September 13 There is a location change for this event scheduled for Sunday, September 13. The previously scheduled Golden Living Care facility could not accommodate our group due to a staffing problem. We have changed the location to the Silver Ridge Assisted Living facility in Gretna. The activities director was excited to hear that we would bring our A s for the residents to enjoy. She has an unusually high number of males enrolled and looks for activities of interest to them. Silver Ridge is at Hackberry Drive in Gretna. It is immediately north of Gretna High School, the site of our car show June 8 th. We plan to meet at the parking lot at the high school in time to drive to Silver Ridge (about a 2 minute drive) at 1:00 PM. We will park along the street in front of the facility and stay for an hour or two or less if interest on the part of the residents wanes. This show will not include a snack or other activities which were a planned part of the original event. However, if there is interest (and I m betting on it) we will stop for root beer float supplies and take them to the McKinney s. They have invited us to enjoy our treat at their beautiful home. If you did not attend the Gretna High School car show and need directions: From the north approach Gretna from Highway 6. Turn left at Highway 370 and go to the first traffic signal at 204 th Street. Turn right and go south a few blocks on 204 th until you pass Silver Ridge (on the left) and immediately come to the high school also on your left. We will meet in the parking lot. If you approach Gretna from the East on Highway 370 the first traffic signal in Gretna will be 204 th Street. Turn left here and go south until you pass Silver Ridge on the left and see the high school immediately on your left. I expect a few of our friends from the Centennial Model T club will join us. Please sign up so we can plan on sufficient parking spaces at Silver Ridge. Barney Deden International Model A Day Saturday, September 19 Drive your A on Model A day! We ve planned a trip to Nebraska City to display our A s at Arbor Lodge on the circular brick drive in front of the mansion. We will be joined by A s from the Cornhusker Model A club from Lincoln and possibly also have a few Model T s from the Centennial Model T Club. Because this is the opening day of the Applejack Festival with its very large crowds, the lodge coordinator would like us to arrive at the mansion at 8:30 AM. Tentative plans are for her to arrange a lunch for us. To meet her schedule we will need to leave Omaha no later than 7:15 to make the 50 mile trip. Sunrise is scheduled for 7:08 AM so it will be important to have your lights in good condition. We plan to leave the mansion at 2:00 PM. Those leaving at 7:15 AM from west/central parts of Omaha will meet somewhere in the Omaha/Gretna area. Call Greg Bowden for an exact location. Those leaving at 7:15 AM from east/central areas will meet at the Hy-Vee store parking lot on the right at the intersection of Highway 75 and Oak Hill Road. This intersection is at the first traffic light south of the Platte River Bridge. If you drive to the event but choose not to join either of these groups, call Barney Deden and he will talk you through directions to the meeting place in Nebraska City. Congratulations to Ken and Melody Grigsby Their pickup (shown below at the Vintage Wheels show) is on the road! This was the day after its 4th anniversary of the day the Grigsbys purchased it. 3
4 Preview of Events coming up after September Eagles, Tractors, and Fords of Pottawattamie County Sunday, October 4th Meet at 9:00 AM at Casey's General Store (19900 Virginia Hills Rd, Council Bluffs). Casey's is on the south side of Highway 92, about a mile east of Iowa School for the Deaf. We will be touring to Griswold, Iowa to look at a couple antique tractor and farm equipment museums, as well as a private collection of Fords, including tractors, cars and trucks. This link is from a news article that talks about Griswold s various museums. On the way, we will make a couple short stops to view two of artist Russell Christensen s bronze Eagle statues, created as part of his "Eagles of Honor" project to place a large eagle in each Pottawattamie County community to honor of our nation's veterans. See Greg Bowden Mark Your Calendars!!! Highway Pickup Saturday, October 17 We re looking for a minimum of 12 hardy, fun loving, civic minded, members that want to spent an hour outside with fellow members picking up the shoulders of a two mile segment of highway 36 west of Bennington. If we get 12 volunteers, nobody has to do more than a fourth of the highway we re responsible for. We will meet at 10 am at Cubby s, C W Hagan Dr., Bennington, NE. (156 th & Highway 36), from there we will then carpool to our section of Hwy 36. So brings some gloves, a bucket, and some good walking shoes. Following our short walk we will return for lunch at Runza. So don t miss the fun and the opportunity to do some good while getting some fresh air and enjoying the company of fellow members. A sign-up sheet will be available at the September meeting. Thanks. 5 Past Events It was a perfect day at Fort Omaha on August 16 th and exhibitors brought 75 beautiful cars and trucks to show the hundreds of spectators looking for a fun Sunday activity. A very large group of Meadowlarks pitched in to make the event run very smoothly and efficiently. The list of involved workers includes most of the club members. Several interesting displays made the exhibits more than just cars and trucks on display. Entertainment events like the brass band and the Irish dance troop also added to the total spectator experience. The free rides in a vintage car were very Vintage Wheels at the Fort popular with spectators of all ages. The concession stand was very busy all day and earned a very nice profit for the club. Special thanks is due to those hard working cooks and servers. A few comments heard from spectators were: This is the best car show I ve ever seen, The pork chops were outstanding, I wish I would have brought my parents and I never thought I would actually ride in a car like this. If you missed the show we missed you and you missed a really great time on a really nice day. Barney 2015 Ford 1915 Ford Show Favorite 5

It took an hour to knock bricks from the door frame and make a hole large enough for the car - it was then successfully road tested. This is the recipe Jodie Gernandt brought to the Picnic and Fireworks on July 3, printed by request: TACO MAC SALAD Betty Eymann (grandmother of Brian Gernandt) 1 ½ cup Rotini Macaroni 1 lb ground beef 1 pkg taco seasoning ½ cup chopped green pepper ½ cup chopped onion 1 cup grated cheddar cheese 1 box halved cherry tomatoes 1-2 bags of shredded lettuce ½ cup French dressing 1 bag of Doritos Salt and pepper (Optional: black olives, black beans) Cook macaroni, rinse and drain. Brown meat, drain, mix in taco seasoning. Cool. In large bowl, mix macaroni, green pepper, cheese, onion, tomatoes, lettuce and salt and pepper to taste. Chill. Just before serving, toss in the meat mixture, French dressing and crushed taco chips. Mix lightly. 8
