The 2018 Annual Meeting weekend will include woodland tours, engaging speakers, interesting exhibitors, a field day at the historic Thunder Mountain Ranch and of course YOU hundreds of WWOA members from across the state and country gathering to share their passion for woodlands! Conference Resort Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel just South of Wabeno is offering a special room rate of $83 per hotel room per night plus tax. Make your lodging reservations now by calling or The special rates expire on September 4, Remember to specify that you are with WWOA to receive the discounted rate. Check in time is 4 pm. The hotel has just informed WWOA that they now charge a $50 incidental fee/room which is preauthorized on your credit card when you check in. If you do not want this preauthorization included on your card please bring $50 in cash for this fee. At check out the incidental fee pre-authorization will be released unless you have used it at the restaurants or caused damage in the hotel room. Conference Overview On Thursday, join our rock and roll bike trip or the Flowing Forest Amenities tour. Enjoy Sharing Experiences presentations in the evening. Friday learn more about local tree farms, timber harvests, historical sites, and a Job Corps center. Then join us for a fun and casual evening. Saturday morning s keynote speaker, John A. Rajala, will share his family s passion for white pine. WWOA s 39 th year Annual Business Meeting agenda highlights our accomplishments. Saturday afternoon has a variety of breakout sessions. Annual Meeting 2018 Thursday, September 20 bus leaves from Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel 7:00 AM The Springs Restaurant opens for breakfast 8:00-9:45 AM & 3-7 PM Meeting Registration 9:00 AM 3:00 PM WWOA Board of Directors meeting followed by a tree planting in Wabeno 9:00 AM 3:15 PM Option A Flowing Forest Amenities Tour with lunch travel to the Crivitz area to tour the High Falls hydroelectric power plant on the Peshtigo River. Then enjoy lunch at Governor Thompson State Park and learn about the history of the area. After lunch take a tour of Blaser s Acres, one of the largest maple syrup producers in Wisconsin. Parts of the tour are not handicapped accessible. 9:30 AM 3:30 PM Option B Rock and Roll Bike Tour with lunch drive to the Cooper s with your bikes (map will be provided). Tour includes an opportunity to climb Coopers ROCK outcropping to get an (almost) 360 o view of the area. The ROLL will be a leisurely ride down Old 64 Road. It is an asphalt, mostly level road and nearly 14 miles one-way, you decide how far out you want to ride. Lunch will be at Coopers Cabin on the banks of Waupee Creek. 7:00 8:30 PM Members Sharing Experiences hear how WWOA members are caring for their woodlands White Pine Regeneration, Ross Prior, Coleman; Building and Maintaining a Do-It-Yourself Wooden Bridge, Tom Jacobs, Crivitz; Schuh s Family Forest, Kurt Schuh, Kaukauna; and Perch Lake and surrounding Wetlands: public benefits, Judith Padour, Crivitz. Friday, September 21 buses leave from Potawatomi Carter Casino Hotel 7:00 AM The Springs Restaurant opens for breakfast 7:30 AM 6:00 PM Meeting Registration 8:30 AM 4:00 PM Tour 1 Mountain & Waupee Pines Tree Farms Tour with lunch in the morning tour Coopers Mountain Tree Farm to hear about their property and see how their red pine plantation is marked for its 4 th thinning. They will also give an update on their wood turtle nesting project. After lunch by Waupee Creek, travel a short distance to Jacobs Waupee Pines Tree Farm. Hear about their accomplishments and see their do-it-yourself wooden bridge. Tour includes walking on mostly level roads, and wagon rides. Handicapped accommodations available. 8:45 AM 4:00 PM Tour 2 Peshtigo Historical Tour with lunch join us for a day back in time October 8, 1871 at the Peshtigo Fire Museum when Wisconsin s most devastating firestorm destroyed the town of Peshtigo and much of northeastern Wisconsin killing over 2,000 people. Then enjoy some fresh air and lunch at the Harmony Arboretum, a 460-acre horticultural and conservation education center. Continue our historical adventure at the Stephenson Island Logging Museum on the WI- MI border to learn about local culture and life in the 19 th century. Not all handicapped accessible. 9:00 AM 3:30 PM Tour 3 After the Harvest Tour with lunch spend the day with WI DNR and US Forest Service foresters visiting a variety of timber sales in the Mountain area completed under the Good Neighbor Authority, which allows WI DNR to administer selected sales on the Chequamegon- Nicolet National Forest. Hear about the goals for each sale, type of harvest used including shelterwood, seed tree, and clearcutting, followed by a variety of regeneration methods. Woods sites are not handicapped accessible, some off trail walking. 12:00 PM 3:30 PM Tour 4 Blackwell Center Tour travel to the Blackwell Job Corps Center to learn about its programs to train today s under-privileged youth, ages years, in both hard and soft vocational programs. The Center s trades include carpentry, construction craft laborers, masonry, welding, office administration and health occupations. The Center, established in 1965, is located on a former Civilian Conservation Corps camp, and provides on-site residency for the students. See how their training has benefitted local communities. Rajala, Rajala Companies As a fourth generation caretaker of northern Minnesota s white pine forests, hear the Rajala family s inspirational story of caring for their 25,000-acre timberlands, companies, and community. Their forest management mimics natural disturbance through the use of continuous, irregular shelterwoods to create high value forests of white pine, red oak, paper birch and northern hardwoods. Rajala Companies started with the family s purchase of a small sawmill in the early 1900s. The sawmill is now the longest running mill in Minnesota. It is the foundation of their 100 year old vertically integrated company which includes Minnesota Timber and Millwork. Thunder Mountain Ranch consists of some 3,000 acres of land and lakes and streams situated 20 miles northwest of Crivitz, WI. It is a family owned corporation. Some acreage is in tree plantations and hay production. Throughout the years the ranch has employed many local people to care for and run the ranch. Orlando J. Buck from Chicago, bought the land in He had a daughter and two sons, Hazel B. Ewing, Nelson L. Buck and Ellsworth B. Buck. They maintained an active interest and then passed the operation on to the children and grandchildren. Sunday Field Day... Registration includes breakfast buffet at hotel, morning coffee and catered lunch in the field, field day presentations and tours, handouts and activities. It s about a 45 minute drive to the Thunder Mountain Ranch. Directions can be found on the map pages. Enter the diverse Thunder Mountain Ranch just to the west of Boat Landing 11 Road, through a gate (look for the WWOA signs). Follow the grassy/dirt road into the field and around the above rock outcropping to the parking area. Join us in the tent for coffee and the welcome. Sunday s field day will offer a variety of natural resource based stations and wagon rides to see more of the property. The field day will be based on the edge of a timber harvest and near the North Fork of the Thunder River in fairly level fields. Tentative topics for stations include: the recent timber harvest, forest insect and disease issues, trout stream habitat, water quality, geology of the area, forest fire protection, an older hemlock stand, and wildlife habitat. 11 Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association Annual Meeting 2018 Photo Contest Attention all WWOA shutterbugs! Use your photographic and artistic skills, along with the knowledge of your property, to submit photos that best exemplify the chosen categories. Photo quality is important so set your camera for the maximum resolution setting. Members will vote for the Member s Choice award during the Annual Meeting. Awards will be announced at the 2018 Annual Meeting banquet on Saturday evening. TWO THEMES: Stepping Stones ~ Photos submitted in this category should portray one of the many varied steps we take to manage our woods. These steps may be baby and small in size or giant and grand in nature and scope. Whatever the size step you have taken, capture the moments working with a professional forester, resource manager, logging contractor, road maintenance worker, legacy planner, habitat improvement laborer or other activities that focus on conservation efforts in the woods. Photos should include people and be a stunning, action-oriented representation of the Steps taken in our woods. Arrivals and Departures ~ This category is looking for photos illustrating the Spontaneity of Spring or the Farewell of Fall. Photographs should showcase the attributes (qualities) of these two drastically different seasons in the woods. Whether it is buds breaking or leaves falling, songbirds nesting or geese flying, April showers bringing May flowers or frosty freezes, consider submitting a photo that highlights the best aspect of either an arrival or departure in your woods. Photos must not include people. TWO DIVISIONS: Youth - Under 18 years old Adult - 18 years old and up RULES: Eligibility: Photos must be of WWOA members property and taken by a WWOA member or immediate family member. Format: Only color prints not larger than 8 X 10 will be accepted. No matting or framing allowed. Photos taken with a digital camera must be printed on photographic quality paper. Digital files and photos from trail cameras will not be accepted. Photos will not be returned. Submission Guidelines: Limit of one entry per person per category. A completed Entry Form must be affixed to the back of each print. The Entry Form may be copied. Entries not meeting the rules will not be judged. WWOA reserves the right to use any submitted photos in future outreach or promotional materials. Entry Fee: $5 per participant per category. Make checks payable to WWOA.
