1 The Official Website Newsletter December 2010 Saturday, December 4, 2010 At 11:00 AM the parade will begin at Town Hall, 1701 Barbados Road, and head east on Barbados Road to West Lake Drive, and then south on West Lake Drive around Lake Clarke until it reaches Pine Tree Lane. The parade will then head north along Pine Tree Lane, ending on Venetian Way. We are looking forward to having you join us in this most festive event. You can watch the parade along the parade route or if you or your group wishes to be a part of our parade you will need to complete a registration and release agreement. These forms are available at Town Hall or you can save time and download your application and release agreement forms at from our on-line forms page! 2 COUNCIL NEWS At the November 16th Town Council Meeting the Following Action was Taken: Approved October 12, 2010 Town Council Meeting Minutes. Approved Resolution #10-27 Authorizing budget transfers for fiscal year 2009/2010. Approved Resolution #10-28 Expressing appreciation to Colonel Banna Rodriguez Ghioto (U.S. Army Reserve, Ret.) for her exemplary service to her country and to the Town of Lake Clarke Shores. Approved Land Use Permit Christopher Johnson, 1443 Mediterranean Road E installation of seawall, dock and boatlift. Approved piggybacking Palm Beach County Continuing Construction Contract WUD for replacement of Chickasha Road (Seminole Manor) water main total cost not to exceed $156,000 with amount to be taken from R & R Fund (Repair and Replacement Fund). Approved Actuarial Service Agreement between the Town and Foster & Foster, Inc. for Actuarial Services Related to Other Post Employment Benefits as required to comply with Governmental Accounting Standards Board Statement (GASB) No. 45. 3 5th Annual Tree Decorating & Lighting! The fun begins at 5:00 PM Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Memorial Park! Come help us welcome in the holiday season! Visit with Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus Bring your own camera or have a professional portrait taken. Bring along some extra ornaments for the children to hang on the tree. Santa s elves will be on hand to help the children make an ornament of their very own to hang on the tree or take home. We will light the tree at 6:00 PM while the air is filled with holiday music presented by the Forest Hill H.S. Choral Group Dimension 20 Enjoy some hot chocolate and snacks!

4 BAKERS WANTED For those of you who enjoy baking we have two upcoming opportunities for you to help your community. We are looking for bakers of cookies, brownies, cupcakes (finger type snacks, no cutting required please) for our 5 th Annual Tree Decorating and Lighting Event being held on Saturday, December 4, 2010 beginning at 5:00 PM. Children will able to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and make a holiday ornament to take home. We will be serving hot chocolate and your home-baked snacks to those in attendance. 5 LAKE CLARKE SHORES HOME DECORATION CONTEST Judging of the Home Holiday Decoration contest will begin, December 14, Contestants must have their lights on by 6:00 PM. Contest Categories are as follows: Best Overall Best Window Best Entranceway Best Door Best Garage Door Best Mailbox Best Native Florida Most Patriotic Most Artistic Most Humorous Most Traditional Best Animation Best Lighting The judges will cover every street in the Town in their search for the 2010 winners. 6 LAKE CLARKE SHORES POLICE DEPARTMENT Chief Wes Smith As everyone is aware, during these difficult economic times, along with the holidays approaching, residential burglaries usually increase. In an effort to keep our residents, their guests, and property safe, extra Officers will be patrolling during the day hours when most home burglaries occur. These Officers will be in uniform and plain clothes. I want to remind everyone that if you have an alarm, please use it. Alarms are a great deterrent, but they only work if you use them. Be aware of your neighborhood. If you see someone or a vehicle that appears suspicious call the police department right away, do not wait. Lock your vehicles whether at home or while shopping; do not keep any items of value in plain sight in your vehicle such as laptops, purses, cell phones, gifts, or money. This is an open invitation for someone to break into your vehicle and remove your property. While shopping, remember to be observant of your surroundings. If shopping at night, take a friend and park in a well-lit area or use the valet service. ADDITIONAL HOLIDAY TIPS PROVIDED VIA THE WEB Keep a light and radio or television on when you re out so it looks like someone is home. Have your mail and newspapers picked up each day if you are unable or are away. Ask for assistance from store security, if available, to escort you to your vehicle. Teach your child(ren) his or her name, address and phone number to assist law enforcement if separated. Be extra cautious about locking doors and windows when you leave, even if it is for just a few minutes. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash; pay with a debit/credit card or check. Do not throw the empty boxes that your gifts came in on the trash pile out front of your home without breaking down the boxes. Turn the boxes inside out. Leaving gift boxes out front of your home can advertise to a criminal what gifts you received.

7 The Town of Lake Clarke Shores will once again be participating in the annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. Your donation of a new toy will help deliver a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters. The Town will be collecting unwrapped toys in the lobby of the Town Hall during November and December. With your help, we can collect more toys than we did last year! Florida Friendly Landscaping Tips for the Home Gardener Landscaping the Florida Friendly way means using low maintenance plants and environmentally sustainable practices. Learn how you can have a beautiful landscape that could save you time, energy and money while protecting our future. 1. Water infrequently, deeply and thoroughly: Most lawns need about 3/4 to 1 inch of water once per week, or once every two weeks when the weather cools. Water can come from rain, or from irrigation. Infrequent but deep watering encourages deep rooting, as well as healthier and hardier plants with a greater tolerance for drought. 2. Water at the right time of day: Water early in the day, especially in warmer weather, when evaporation rates are lowest. 3. Watch your lawn instead of a schedule or calendar: Your lawn needs watering when: Grass blades are folded in half Grass blades are blue-gray Your footprint remains on the lawn 4. Too much water can hurt plants: Over watering creates shallow roots, making plants more vulnerable to disease and pests, as well as to drought. 5. Drip or micro-irrigation systems save water: These systems deliver water to the root of plants, so much less is lost to the atmosphere. 6. Mulching: Adding mulch helps to keep water in the soil around plants. At least two inches is suggested around shrubs, trees, annuals and vegetable and flower gardens. 7. Remove Weeds; Add Native Plants: Weeds or other unwanted plants use water. Removing them means more water for the plants you want. Native plants are adapted to our rainy and dry seasons, and offer habitat to area wildlife. 8. Install a rain sensor: This recognizes when nature brings the water your lawn needs, and shuts off automatic sprinklers. 9. Adjust your lawnmower blades: Most lawns are healthiest when blades are 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches long. Longer blades shade the soil, and keep in water. 10. Keep lawnmower blades sharp: Clean, sharp cuts cause less trauma to grass blades, making the grass more resistant to disease.
