1 District Five 2016 Fall Tour Schedule Welcome to the 2016 WMSPA Fall Tour We want to thank you all for joining us today and we would especially like to thank the members who gave their time in putting this together and also the sugar makers and businesses that have opened their doors to us. 2 Our Starting and Ending Location: Morley s Maple Syrup Morley s Maple Syrup Equipment Supply Store opened in late 2015 and is located in Luck, WI at the intersection of State Hwy 35 and State Hwy 48. They sell a full line of CDL products and supplies. Morley s have everything you need for getting into the maple syrup business, whether you are a hobbyist or established producer. With the exit of Anderson s Maple Syrup from the equipment sales business in 2015, John and Crystal Morley saw an opportunity to expand their business to include selling equipment and supplies to their fellow producers. With their years of experience and their transition from a small producer to a large producer they are able to help others with knowledge, advice and guidance. 3 Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park is situated on 80 acres along the Yellow River. The Park was developed to showcase Forts Folle Avoine, an authentic, reconstructed fur trade site on the Register of Historic Places. On this site the North West and XY Fur Trade Companies competed with each other for trade with the Indians from Information contained in fur trade journals led it its discovery in An archaeological dig provided the specific location of the buildings and stockade that enabled the reconstruction of the historic site. The addition of a Woodland Indian Village, which shows their way of life in that time period, completed the setting for the Forts. Forts Folle Avoine Historical Park opened in Assisted by state grants as well as county and tribal support, the Historical Society designed the park as a center for history, education and entertainment in Burnett County. Along with educational tours and school programming, a wide variety of events, activities and educational opportunities are scheduled throughout the year. Additional buildings have been added over the years including a Logging Museum, One-room Schoolhouse, and Blacksmith. All are open for self-guided tours. Lunch will be served at the Fort. Menu: Hot Beef Sandwich, Mashed Potatoes, Vegetables, Desert, and a Beverage. Bus leaves Forts Folle Avoine for our first sugarhouse visit at 1:00 pm.

4 HIGHPOINT MAPLE SYRUP Paul and Karen Pedersen Highpoint Maple Syrup Sugarbush is located on the north slope of Polk County s highest point of elevation. My wife and I bought this 45 acre Sugar bush in 2009 and made our first syrup in 2010 with 809 taps. This woods has been tapped for quite a number of years, the first sugar shack was built on 20 acres. In the late 1990 s the previous owner added more acres and built a new Sugarhouse. My interest in making maple syrup was sparked 30 years ago while studying Forestry at UWSP, but it was not until 20 years ago that I tapped a few trees and made syrup on a 2.5 by 4 flat pan. Now I am making syrup with a state of the art Leader Vortex wood-fired arch and Revolution Evaporator with 30 x 6 Combo max flue pan and 30 x 4 syrup pan, and 30 x 6 Steam-away. During the seven years we ve had the place, we ve gone from 800 taps to 1700 taps and made anywhere between 30 and 600 gallons of syrup. (The 30 gallon year was the historically poor year of 2012) This Sugarbush has the virtue of being on a slope. The first year we tapped, we had about 150 taps on gravity lines. That number has grown to last year s number of 1,070. Last year, after reading the latest research on 3/16 tubing used to achieve high vacuum, we added 650 taps on 3/16 tubing. The plan for next season is to replace all 5/16 tubing with 3/16 tubing. As part of my stand improvement plan I harvest 20 to 25 cords of firewood and a load of saw logs every year. I heat our home and feed the evaporator from my annual timber harvest. We leave Pedersen s to head to Morley s Maple Syrup sugarhouse at 2:40 pm.

5 Morley s Maple Syrup Morley s Maple Syrup is located just 2 miles east of the Village of Luck, Wisconsin. John and Crystal Morley tapped their first trees on their home site. They started with just 350 taps collected in pails just as it was done 100 years ago. As their numbers of taps grew so did their family. They now have 4 special helpers, Samuel, Tanner, Lola and Sylvia. With the help of many family members and friends they now have over 8,000 taps. Today they collect most of their sap through plastic tubing criss-crossing the hills into a tank, where it is collected daily and taken to Morley s sugar bush where they cook off the excess water. Following our tour of Morley s Maple Syrup Sugarhouse, at 3:45 we will load up and return back to Morley s Maple Syrup Store.
