2 Presidents Report Where did the week go! It was the Golf day on Tuesday then I flew off to Coffs early on Wednesday & got back later than usual last night. I therefore missed some of the immediacy of the bushfires. Jen said the air was thick with smoke & the smell was everywhere on Thursday. The DG asked what Rotary Clubs could do to assist & Douglas responded promptly in my absence offering our trailer if there was a need for it. It appears the Blue Mountains clubs, being in the thick of it, have met & are seeing what is most needed so a financial donation through them may be the most effective way to respond. We have had the Garage Sale & the Golf Day & have the Porsche Club Bar-B Q & Chinese Lantern Festival coming up so we are quite well placed financially. We could add a bucket for donations at the last two! The Golf Day went well & Hunters Hill were quite generous in their thanks to our Club for our the back of house organisation as they put it. Ian & Jim manned the front desk with their Past President and whilst they still had challenges it was a big improvement on last year as was the food, which was better in variety & quantity. Bev & Carol (& an old apex friend Geoff Harris) ran the raffle & were extremely effective in selling tickets to those golfers who were not staying for the dinner as well as those that did, grossing over $1000. We were a bit light on for sponsors so especial thanks to Rob Hamer & Pronto & SMS Waste for kicking the can again. Tomorrow night is our first Business Networking evening. Rosemary, Barry & Tom have put a lot of thought in to it & have assigned a volunteer member to each guest so they should get introduced around & we should get some useful feedback from them as to what they thought of the meeting. They are by no means all prospective Rotarians but many are certainly already friends of Rotary having assisted at the garage sale or been involved with the club in some way or other. We need to strengthen our ties with local businesses and if this proves to be an engaging & interesting meeting this may be one way to do it. Although the meeting should end about normal time Frank has agreed to keep the bar open until 9.00pm and there will be cheese and biscuits so it would be good if could you stay & chat with our business guests over a cup of coffee or a glass of Red (or Port!). 3 Night Report There was no night report for the golf day and the evening that followed, sorry. But as I was a player (I use that term loosely) I can report that the weather was perfect and a great day of golf was had by all 27 teams that played (6 arranged by our club) at Oatlands golf course. We had a shotgun start at 12:30pm to commence playing a leisurely (or competitive) 18 holes. The members playing from our Club were Jim Simpson, Pres. Clive Denmark and I, plus partners Di Simpson and Jenny Denmark. Dinner following the golf was an all you can eat BBQ, with a great selection of meats and salads. There were 70 for the dinner, with Carol, Tom and Bev joining us. The awards were given out. The winning ladies team commented on the very impressive silver trophy they were presented (something along the lines of and we get to clean it?, recall the wonderful trophy Clive obtained through the garage sale some years ago). Di Simpson was awarded the prize for the longest ladies drive. Jenny, Di and Bev put together almost thirty prizes for the raffle, including a round of golf for four at Oatlands, several food hampers Jenny assembled, bush saws (which were popular), lots of wine etc. The tickets sold very well and the raffle managed to make $1,079 for our club. I need to refer to Clive for the total made on the day, though due to the imbalance of numbers, most will go to Hunters Hill Club. Night Reporter: Bob Davison Porsche Club Day BBQ Sunday 20 th October Tom is running the Porsche day and volunteers are scheduled from 6am, thank you. Have a great day! G day Everyone, The Adventures of Peter and Julie Cleary Took a while to get this off as the WiFi connections are a bit iffy to say the least, form Port Augusta to Alice Springs, where I sent this. The trip is going well with no major unexpected events. The big must see areas so far must be Wilpena Pound and the rock both stunning in their own way. We spent time in the Barossa a few wine tastings and lunch at Maggie Beers farm shop, dinner at an award winning pizza shop in Anguston. Picked up a 5 litre plastic flagon of tawny port (thanks Mike) at a vineyard, which is very plesant after dinner. Next stop was Wilpena, fantastic aussie bush, kangeroos and emus walking through the annex, beautiful river red gums, stunning rock cliffs and 4wd tracks to die for, through the Brackner and Bunyroo gorges. 4 Driving in the river bed and some remaining large puddles and big smooth river gibbers. We took a flight over the whole area which put the whole geological formation into perspective, like a saucer with only one outlet for the river which floods, whenever they get heavy rain. All nice and green now as they have had recent rain. We did 20kms of walks in the 4 days we were there exploring the cliffs and lookouts. Moved on to Woomera for an overnight stop then to Cobber Pedy, for 3 days. Julie managed to find some Opals she liked (surprise, surprise) and one of the locals found 8 bottles of our red wine they liked out of the car, but not the white wine of beer, the cops said it was because the red has higher alcohol content. We did all the sights including the breakaways, dog fence and the location where Mad max was filmed. We had a dust storm while here and now everything is red even the pc keyboard which was in its carry bag in the car, it got everywhere. Moved off to Erldunda, at the intersection of the Stuart and Lasseter Hwys, spent the night on a grassy couch site, bore water is plentiful, next day off to Ayers Rock (Uluru). Uluru very dry, dusty, and hot but got a good site away from the westerly sun and the fridges are working well in 40 degrees. Van going well I ve learnt that its optimum speed is 90-95kph giving around 17litres/100kms. We ve been busy visiting all the locals, the rock is still as steep as I remember, we walked half way round but didn t climb. The Olgas (Kata Tjuta) are in many ways more impressive, taller, wider and broken up creating a much more interesting walking opportunity revealing hidden valleys and water holes. They are made of conglomerant rock with many of the grains the size of footballs. Kings Canyon about 300kms from Uluru, spectacular 270 m sheer walls of yellow sandstone as distinct from the mostly red around it, climbed 500 steps up to get to the top of the escarpment then generally undulating 6km walk (the rim walk) beehive type domes like the bungles without the white bands. A hidden lush Garden of Eden hidden in a steep Gorge which has had wooden steps constructed so us tourists could gain access, large waterholes, cycads, ghost gums. Julie went beserk with the camera. We were on to Alice Springs where we intended to stay for 4 days but we extended to 8 days as there was so much to see all the red gorges, gaps, chasms, and water holes, after a while they start to look the same, still spectacular, hot (45dec C), red, windy and dusty, like no other place we ve seen, just fantastic. Leaving Alice tomorrow for Tennant Ck then Isa and home through Winton and Longreach should make it by the end of October. A few pics attached. Do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune? Why did you just try singing the two songs above? Did you ever notice that when you blow in a dog's face, he gets mad at you, but when you take him for a car ride, he sticks his head out the window? Why, Why, Why do we press harder on a remote control when we know the batteries are getting dead? Why do banks charge a fee on 'insufficient funds' when they know there is not enough money?
