The 2008 OKC Train Show will be one of the largest train related shows west of the Mississippi River. It will feature almost 100,000 square feet of nothing but trains. There will over 200 exhibitor booths that will be displaying model railroad and railroad related items. Almost 20,000 square feet has been set aside for operating model railroads for the public to view. There will be a Thomas the Tank Engine Children s Play Area. This will be a carpeted area that will have several wooden toy trains boards, plastic toy track, and of course, Thomas models for the children to play with. Continued on page 4 ORM Faces Crossroads by Gary Githens The property across the street north of the ORM facilities is now for sale. The current owners have graciously allowed the ORM to use the property for event parking and some storage. Although your ORM has been saving DOWT event funds in hopes of purchasing the property it now appears the asking price is out of range. So many impossible accomplishments have happened for the ORM. The only thing that I can think of now is for a miracle to allow us to obtain this desperately needed property which so many have worked so hard for. January 10, 2009 Annual Membership Meeting & elections Nomination open/close dates for Board positions will be in the December issue of the Dispatcher. Paramedic Gerald Pettengill on duty at DOWT to respond to medical emergencies. A special thank you to Midwest City Medical Center for helping with the DOWT event. We are honored having a Top 5% of Hospitals in America facility as a major part of the DOWT event team. Again, a heart felt thank you to them. We have a 100 foot turntable to be moved. Hopes were to install it on this property and add a track for access. This is only one of the needs in addition to parking.
2 Page 2 Meet ORM Volunteer David Townsend We just finished another successful Thomas the Tank Engine event. I have photos of a bunch of happy children to prove it. I want to thank Pat Riley for heading up the show. If he had not volunteered for that job, we would not have had a Thomas event this year. For the first time I was able to get out of the store on the last Sunday and see what else was going on all over the museum grounds. I thanked those of you that I saw, but did not get to thank each of you individually. I know I missed the night watchmen; a big thanks to each of you. I slept better knowing someone was watching over Thomas. This was a major effort for our museum but I believe the positive image more than makes up for all the work. The publicity surrounding Thomas gets our name out all over the state. With being open three days a week now we are getting more visitors. Our next event will be the Oklahoma City train show on December 6 and 7 at the fairgrounds. The Museum volunteers take tickets and help out in other ways. Contact Bob Cook and tell him when you can help. They can also use help on the Friday before to help with setup. Shortly after that we will host the Christmas Train on Saturday, December 20. We will begin taking reservations on November 20 and hope to have five full trains that day. Car hosts, singers, jolly elves, Scrooge, and more are needed. Give me a call if you fit any of those categories. We will have the traditional book reading, hot chocolate, candy canes, bells and more. The volunteers will have a lunch prepared by Karen Riley. She has promised something delicious. So, come join us for a fun day. Stan Hall David Townsend takes vacation to volunteer for DOWT. David is an engineer for the BNSF railroad. He started his railroading career in 1972 working for the Santa Fe. He also worked for the Frisco, Rio Grande and Rock Island. Currently David is based in Quanah, Texas and operates trains from there to Snyder, Oklahoma. We appreciate you David Behind the Scenes photo of Truman Hefner setting up the Sir Stan Hall and Marvin Holderbaum busy preparing bar code labels Topham Hatt stage in preparation for DOWT. for DOWT store merchandize stacked in the background. 3 Museum Update by Drake Rice The Thomas event is now completed and work in taking down all the tents, temporary fencing, stage and store is now completed. Volunteers have worked hard in returning the museum back to its normal condition. Big thanks to all who helped set up and take down for the event. There is a lot of work that goes on for the public to come and enjoy the exposure to Trains and the museum and it allows the museum to obtain funds that it would not have by just operating the regular activities. We you come back to the museum, stop by the museum store. It has been cleaned up, turned into more of a store look and feel. Hopefully it will allow visitors to be more encouraged to obtain some of the many items for sale. Nancy Hall, the store manager, has faithfully worked the store through cold and heat and the improvement will hopefully make her service a lot more enjoyable. With the coming of the winter, work on projects will get underway. We have a lot of projects as always that can use volunteers to work on. Projects like finishing ORM 2, (Alco RS-3) and getting it operational. Restoration work on the Rock Island Caboose, Refurbishing the GN Chair Car with new heating and cooling system and power, repainting the Conoco Box Cars, Tank cars, repair to the CNW coach, repair to the flat car in north yard that was damaged, scraping a painting on the grounds, putting up a permanent fence along the track from the depot through the parking lot, putting up parking lot lighting, building shelves in the shop building, keeping up with filing and responding to request, etc. As you can see it s a big list and hat now all of the items. As always, if you can volunteer a few hours a month, any time is appreciated. Also we can use help being at the museum during the day. We currently have several members that are allowing the museum to be open Thursday through Saturday and it would be nice to pick up a few more to allow it to be open Tuesday through Saturday. Contact Stan Hall if you can help in this area. Page 3 We can also use help with the next two events, first the OKC Train Shop at the Fairgrounds. Ed Birch chairs the event and manages it each year and it is a wonderful family event and promotes railroad hobby in this region. If you can help in this area, please sign up or contact Bob Cook. The second event is the annual Christmas Train that is coming on Saturday, December 20th. Again it looks like another good family event, but we need help with it too. Please let Stan Hall or others know if you can help. Next July will be the 10th anniversary of the museum grounds purchase. Let s begin working toward a great 10th year. Also, if you can t volunteer time, but you can donate money, the museum has a fund at the Oklahoma Community Foundation that has a matching activity till the end of the year. So every dollar you give becomes two dollars up to $10, So if you can get a few dollars, please do so before December 31. See you at the museum. Wishing for you and your family a safe and happy Thanksgiving December 20 Editor In the December Dispatcher. Be looking forward to a special story by Mary Holderbaumn contact Stan Hall to volunteer. shall10@cox.net Decorating grounds & cars ahead of time. Hosts to serve hot chocolate, cookies and hand out candy canes. bells and music sheets and sing. Lunch will be provided for volunteers on day of event. Hope for snow on ground only. This is fun, fun, fun, volunteer now. Editor Car hosting is a family event for ORM members mom Paula, dad Karl and daughter Kaye Stevenson. Engineer David Eads reviews train orders with Thomas in preparation to leave Oakwood station.

6 Page 6 Thomas Arrives at ORM on September 23rd Our friend Thomas arrived at the ORM on board his special trailer. Thomas has been extremely busy traveling the country meeting his friends and has taken them for hundreds of rides. Since he had a long way to travel before his visit with friends at the ORM he rode in on his trailer. This also allowed Thomas an opportunity to get some rest before a busy schedule at the ORM. Below are some picture of Thomas crew helping him off his trailer. Story & photos by Gary Githens Thomas truck backs onto main line at 30th street. Thomas on his trailer.
