2 Page 2 The Presidents Column We had a great turnout for the First Easter Train. Our Easter Bunny survived the heat and I believe all the children had a good time. We expect to make this an annual event. Thanks to all for making it a successful event. We just completed a new five year plan that has more projects than we will be able to do in the next five years. If you want a project we have a bunch to share with anyone who wants to head up a project. The new run season has started well. Birthday Parties are becoming a weekly event. There were four last Saturday. Chuck has been busy keeping this important activity progressing smoothly. Work is moving along on the Rock Island Caboose interior. Painting on the former US Army conversion to a MKT paint scheme should be completed in the next couple of weeks. Come on out and find a task you would like to do. 3 the Dispatcher The museum operations season is moving along. We had 776 riders in April which is a good indication that this year we may break the 25,000 rider level. Of course the largest group comes with the Thomas Event. However our normal operations numbers have been growing each year. Under the direction of President Stan Hall, members met on a Sunday afternoon and reviewed the long and short term goals for the museum and set priorities for the work plan. There was a lot of discussion which lead to an agreed to work plan. This plan will be formalized at the April board meeting. As always we have more projects than volunteers and money. But by working through the list, we are making progress. In addition the goals for work on the museum expansion were prioritized to allow continued efforts for the future of your museum. The NCAA Women's Softball World Series is coming and as usually we are in need of volunteers to help with the parking of cars. Harry Currie has obtained another tract of land for the museum to use, so we will be in need of additional volunteers. A sign-up sheet is at the museum. We hope everyone can donate a few hour of time for this project which helps raise money for the museum. Museum Update by Drake Rice The crew is finishing the painting and Bob Cossairt is finishing the building of the wooden bunks. This project is the closest total rebuild the museum has done to date and shows the quality of restoration members can do. Page 3 Shop workers are currently painting the ex ORM 2034 to MKT Green and Yellow and will number it with the one of the unused numbers for switchers the MKT had. A number of people have scraped, sanded and wire brushed to get the unit ready for paint. Hopefully the unit will come out of the shop during May. A former Conoco Tank car is in front of the Murray Shop for repair, cleaning and painting. It is the oldest of the four tank cars the museum has. The wooden blocks under the tank portion of the car will need attention along with the wooden running boards. The mechanical crew volunteer members will be working over the brake system. The car will be part of movie trains, available for photo day's if and when we have them and other needs. In the shop, work continues on the 643 Steam Engine which is looking better each weekend. Repairs to the domes have been made and are now back and being installed. The smoke box door has been re-installed but will need some adjusting. The cab seats have been repaired and seat boxes are being finished. The engine will need to be cleaned and painted. As you can see, there is a lot of activity at your museum. We hope you can stop by and help out. We also are always in need of volunteers to greet our many visitors. Karl Stevens could use some help in the model train car. To volunteer, contact the museum office Tuesday through Saturday at We hope to see you at the museum. The Rock Island Caboose Interior is nearing completion. ORM hosted a NARCOA Motor Car trip Saturday, April 11 on the Wichita, Tillman and Jackson Railroad (WT&J) in Southwest Oklahoma. This line is the old MKT line that one time ran from Wichita Falls, TX to Keyes, OK at the end of the Oklahoma Panhandle. There were 14 unitis set on at Grandfield, Oklaoma. The WT&J is a well maintained railroad and continues to improve the track. It was a great day with no rain and partly cloudy skies. The trip was from Grandfield to Altus and we appreciate ORM member Ron Roman for assisting in the turning of cars on Park Land Street in Altus. All turning was completed and cars returned to Frederick for a late lunch break. The trip was enjoyable for all and the railroad Motorcar trip report by Drake Rice guides were really great. The trip mileage was approximately 98 miles and there were no mechanical issues. All units were clear of the rail by 5:10 pm. The next Motor Car Run will be two Heartland sponsored trips, one on the Stillwater Central on May 30th out of Stillwater, OK and the other on the SKO out of Independence, Ks to Ochelata, OK on June 30th. There will be a Rail Partners Trip on the Blacklands Railroad on June 20th and 21st out of Greenville, Texas. This is also a very nice trip. For more information go to the Rail Partners Website.

4 Page 4 the Dispatcher 2015 NCAA Women's College World Series This event is a major fund raiser for your ORM. Please consider volunteering to help. There will be multiple duty periods on most days. A copy of Anne s schedule is shown below. Notice that on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday there are multiple shifts. We need a total of 12 volunteers for each shift. Six will be at Adventure Station and six at I-35 South and North lots. Once the I-35 north lot is full, the crew will move to the I-35 south lot. This is not a tough assignment and volunteers have a fun time. Please review the days and shift times in the two charts below. After choosing as many shifts and days as you can help call Anne Tuesday through Saturday to sign up. Anne will schedule you in the lot where you are needed. If you prefer a specific lot she will try to schedule you there. I can t emphasize enough how important this event is to your ORM yearly budget.
