The name, Sagora, was created by combining two words: Sage, meaning wisdom or wise, and Agora, meaning a gathering place. Alzheimer combined research and clinical practice, and published papers on diseases of the brain. In 1906, he gave a lecture describing an unusual disease that affected a woman in her 50s, causing memory loss and eventually her death at age 55. Alzheimer found abnormalities in the woman s brain and identified nerve tangles. Alzheimer s costs more than $148 billion each year to Medicare, Medicaid and businesses. FROM THE PASTOR S DESK June 2013 But as for me, I trust in Thee, O Lord, I say, My times are in Thy hand. (Psalm 31:14-15) This past April we witnessed the devastation and destruction of terrorist bombings in Boston and an enormous explosion in West, Texas. In the former incident, hundreds of people were injured and three precious lives were lost. In the latter event, the fertilizer plant explosion cost the lives of 15 people, mostly firefighters, who were the first responders. What is to be our response? How do we reconcile the fact that God is good and loving, yet He allows such tragedy to cross our paths? Many theologians have attempted to answer such questions. But to those who have suffered loss, the best we can offer falls woefully short in mending broken hearts or rebuilding our lives. Our devotional verse reminds me that I don t have all the answers. I am not required to offer explanations or give a theodicy (defense) for the actions of God. Like the Psalmist, I must trust the Lord without reservation, believing that in spite of the whirlwind around me, my God has a plan for my life. And that plan often includes hardship and pain.
