1 The Official Website Newsletter JANUARY 2011 Mark your calendars as the 5th Annual Loop Around the Lake 6K & Kids Mile will be taking place on Saturday, February 12th. The 6K (3.76 miles) begins at 8 AM and makes a clockwise loop around Lake Clarke before heading to the finish line in front of Town Hall. The Kids Mile starts at 9 AM and finishes at the same spot as the 6K. Following both races is the post race party and Awards Ceremony held behind Town Hall. Town residents can support this event in many different ways. You can come out and participate, you and your company can become race sponsors or, if your house is along the race route, you can cheer on your neighbors and runners as they pass by. Proceeds from this event will help fund athletic programs for young people in our community. Registration for the event is available on the Town s website, and registration forms will be available very soon at Town Hall. Town residents receive a special pre-registered price of $18. For information on sponsorship or any questions about the event, please contact Dave Ragsdale ( ) or Tom Mayes ( ). The Town s 18th Annual Barbeque is scheduled for Sunday, March 27th. Make plans to join us for a fun-filled event that has something for everyone. The festivities begin at 11:00 AM and end at 2:30 PM. Food will be served beginning at 11:30 AM and go until the food runs out. There will be plenty of games and activities for the youngsters including a bounce house, slide, contests, face painting and more. Musical entertainment will be provided by World Class Entertainment and DJ Carlos Leon, as well as a special guest appearance by Tim Byrd The Byrd Man. Of course the highlight of the day is our famous mouthwatering food. Pulled pork and barbecue chicken will be prepared by Councilman Shalhoub and his incredible Smokin Gator BBQ pit crew of outstanding volunteers, along with Councilman Lewis irresistible, juicy hot dogs! For those with a sweet tooth, we are once again hosting the BEST Cake and Baking Contest prepared by our local residents. After the judging for the contest is complete, these scrumptious items will be served as dessert. PLEASE NOTE: If you would like to bake something to add to the dessert table but do not wish to be a part of the contest we would certainly appreciate your contribution. Brownies, bar cakes, cakes, pies, etc. All are welcome! In order to properly prepare our dessert table for our residents we ask that you drop your contribution off at Town Hall prior to 11 AM on Sunday, March 27th. For additional information, click on our Events page.

Buy only what you need. Use what you buy. If you have leftovers, give them to someone who can use them. Dispose of unused hazardous household waste properly. Unused chemicals of any type should be disposed of properly and should never be washed or dumped into any storm drain. Once in the water, these chemicals dissolve, dilute, or combine with other substances to create harmful combinations that kill fish and aquatic life. 7 ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL TREE DECORATING & LIGHTING There were over 150 people in attendance at our tree decorating and lighting event this year. The children enjoyed their own ornaments and seeing Santa and Mrs. Claus. A wonderful time was had by all! We would like to give a VERY BIG THANKS to Jim Tackett for coordinating and making this another successful event. Thanks to Jon Tackett who spent numerous hours assisting his father by arranging the lights and placing ornaments on the higher tree limbs. A BIG THANKS to Larry Rothell, of Rothell Electric, for use of his bucket truck to install lights, to Officer Carlos Negrin, who volunteered his time and use of his trailer to pick up the Christmas Tree from Hobe Sound, to Council Member Robert Shalhoub for providing pulled pork sliders, to Pat Conte for coordinating donations of cookies and treats for everyone, to the C.O.P. officers and Chief Smith who donated their time to help out around the tree, to Forest Hill High School 20th Dimension Chorus, to the Town of Lantana for donating the Santa chair, and to our Staff members for providing hot chocolate, ornament making projects for the children, and inviting Mr. and Mrs. Claus to join us this year.
8 JANUARY 2011 HOUSE OF THE MONTH 7643 West Lake Drive SAFETY TIPS FOR JOGGERS/WALKERS Make sure people can see you. Think about where you are going and how much lighting there is. Going out at dusk or at night is dangerous without some type of reflective material on your clothing. Many athletic shoes have reflective qualities built in. Run against traffic so you can observe approaching automobiles. Run clear of parked cars or bushes. Do not wear headsets. If you wear them, you will not hear an approaching car. Carry a flashlight. Jog or run with a known companion. Carry a whistle or high decibel battery powered personal alarm device when you jog or run.
9 Lake Clarke Shores has several opportunities during the year for our resident youth to obtain volunteer/community service hours during our special events, i.e., the Annual Town BBQ, Movie Nights, etc Please click on the Town Events link to see what s coming up or contact Town Hall at for more information.
