1 August 2017 Omaha, Nebraska President's Message Hello Model A Enthusiasts, This summer continues to roll along rapidly. We are reaching the end of July and there is more to come. We have the Wheels at the Fort coming up on August 20 th. The By -Law Review Committee has been working very hard on our review of the By-Laws and the Procedure Book. I used the Procedure book a little this year, but it needs updating. Hopefully it will be ready and of great use to the next President and Board Members. Janet Graves has skillfully used her computer skills to keep us organized, which is very much appreciated. I look forward to seeing our members at the next General Meeting. Well, I have been puttering around World War One again. I was curious about the Tanks built by the Ford Company. The Ford 3-Ton M 1918 was one of the first light tanks designed by the U.S.. This little tank was a small two-man, one-gun tank. It was armed with a M1919 Browning machine gun and could reach a maximum speed of 8 mph. The 3-Ton had a 17-gallon tank that gave it a maximum range of 34 miles (Wikipedia). This design was started in the middle of It had two Model T Ford engines which were controlled by the driver, who was seated at the front. The gunner was beside the driver who had control of a.30/06 machine gun. This gun sat on a limited - traverse mount with about 550 rounds of ammunition. Initially 15 vehicles were produced and one was sent to France for tests. A contract for 15,000 tanks was awarded; however, the U.S. Tank Corps felt it did not meet the requirements they wanted. This contract ended by the Armistice which left the original fifteen tanks produced. (Wikipedia) I guess it was back to the drawing board until the next war. The First World War brought a lot of different languages and cultures together. So a lot of new slang came out of their togetherness in the trenches. The Americans were the Doughboys (there are a few theories for this)& Yanks, The British were Tommys & Kitchener s Army, The French were Poilu ( frontline) or Frog (frog eater), a soldier in a Scottish regiment were Jocks, A Kiwi was a New Zealand soldier, an Italian soldier was Macaroni. The Portuguese soldiers were Pork & Beans. The Germans were called Fritz, Krout (derogatory), Huns (also derogatory), Boche (derived from French caboche or blockhead, stubborn) & Jerry (sympathetic nickname). In World War I History: Front Line Slang by David Hunt, he states that is a psychological phenomenon that simultaneously identified and bound together those who shared the horrors and conditions of trench warfare and excluded those who didn t. Like civilians, politicians at home, generals and staff officers. Slang also allowed the men to avoid using terms like death, killed, and died and even renamed and trivialized the weapons of war into something less threatening. Slang also allowed commentary on nonlethal subjects such as the quality of the food and, of course, officers. Front line troops oftentimes felt more kinship with the enemy occupying the opposing trenches than those in the rear. (Hunt, David, WWI History: Front Line Slang, Oct Words that we still use today are: Gone West (killed, dead), Landowner (dead & buried), rest camp (cemetery). pushing up daisies. A Whizz-Bang (a high velocity shell), Barrage (An excessive # or quantity), The Big Push (1916 Battle of the Somme- British), The Big Show ( Meuse- Argonne Offensive- American), Brass Hats (High Ranking Officers), to break new ground (to do something not 1 done beforeprobably reference to digging a new trench), chatting (lice were sometimes called chatts. And the soldiers would spend many hours visiting while removing them from their clothing, has been used since the 16 th century), Chew the fat (to sulk, be resentful- has lost its negative connotation since the war), Chow (started in Maritime 19 th century-in the Great War it passed on to the other services), dud (failure to explode), give her the gun (accelerating an engine), Kaput (done for), No Man s Land (acquired its military meaning in WWI), nose dive (sharp descent/ decline today, originally a fighter pilots tactic), tail spin (airplane term now means out of control ), over the top (today means the final plunge or doing something dangerous), put a sock in it (shut up), up against the wall (started with firing squads, now means in serious difficulties ), & thingumajig ( humorous substitute for a name unknown or forgotten due to the fast advances in technology during WWI). Well, I hope you had fun reading this. I hope it was not a dud, sometimes I feel like I am in a tailspin or in a nose dive. I will send this off to no man s land to be printed by some modern thingamajig. You get the picture! Stay Calm & Carry On, Sincerely. Esther

3 Upcoming Events VINTAGE WHEELS AT THE FORT, Sunday August 20 The date for our fifth annual WHEELS AT THE FORT car show and family fun event at Fort Omaha is rapidly approaching. As in past years.this event can use the help of every member of the Meadowlark Club to make it a successful event. A sign-up sheet was offered at the July meeting and will be available again at the August 12 th meeting. This sign-up helps us plan to cover all the duties necessary to make this another wonderful day for the participants and guests who have made this an annual event. However, if you cannot choose a task, simply come to the show location at Fort Omaha and we will welcome your help with set-up of tents, ropes, food tent, etc beginning at 8:30. Or you can help with parking vehicles. We hope to have more parking assistance than in past years to avoid even the remotest possibility of damage to show vehicles or public safety. We will also need volunteers to spend an hour during the day monitoring traffic at 2 or 3 locations and to drive a golf cart to help guests up the hill from the public parking lot. The food tent is always happy for volunteers to give the chefs and wait staff a break. There are also many small brief tasks like moving chairs, helping entertainers move equipment, etc. which make the day go smoother. Everyone is welcome to pitch in at any time. We also welcome anyone who is willing to participate in the free Rides in a Vintage Car activity. This is a very popular event and with more drivers and cars participating everyone can have time to relax between trips around the parade ground. And, of course, when this is all over we need volunteers to help tear down and clean up the grounds. None of this is hard work and the more helping hands we have the easier and more fun we will have. Pick up some hand-outs for the event at the August meeting and spread the word among your friends to attend this fun event, either with a show vehicle or just to enjoy a fun family day at the Fort. Call Barney Deden with specific questions or concerns or barney@deden.net See more photos from the 2016 Vintage Wheels at the Fort at this Google Photo site. 3

After the parade we ate lunch at Langdon's. Langdon's has supported the club by sponsoring a trophy in the Skills car show these past 3 years. We had great opportunity to socialize waiting for the parade and at lunch. Those who participated were Greg and Priscilla Bowden, daughter and grand daughter, John and Kristy Leddy and family, Barney Deden, El and Dot Gertner, Bob Benton, Brian and Jodie Gernandt and daughter, Randall and Cori Vance and family, Steve Zikmund, Bruce and Lori Rima, Charlie Earnest, past members Ray and Linda Crisman, and Dale Jergensen. 7 Past Events Pawnee City Tour The McKinneys set up a nice tour to Pawnee City. On the way, we stopped to see the beautifully restored St. Anthony s Catholic Church in Steinauer. In Pawnee City, our main stop was the Pedal Clinic, where over 600 Pedal Cars and lots more are on display, with a bonus of two Model As in the garage. Another bonus was a restored service station next door with a 30 Pontiac Coupe under restoration. We had lunch at the Schilling Bridge Winery. It was a little early for wine so most of us had their excellent Root Beer. Then, we drove to Auburn where we dined and stayed for the night at Arbor Manor. Dave and Esther Miller were on their maiden voyage in their new 1931 Town Sedan. Others on the trip were Bob & Mary McKinney, Don & Karen Noodell, and Don & Janet Graves We drove through some beautiful country in southeast Nebraska. Besides the very green corn and soybean fields, there were lots of wild flowers. The Florida Blue Lettuce wild flower seemed to attract Painted Lady Butterflies. They were fluttering all around us and some hitched a ride on our raditators. We made a few butterfly eviction stops. 7
