July is one of your most critical months. JULY: Crops in bloom producing nectar and/or pollen: alfalfa, lima beans, various herbs, carrot, clover, corn, fireweed, melon, mustard, radish, spearmint. Others: holly hock, snowberry, teasel. Provide water continuously. Examine supers frequently but don t leave much empty comb on colonies that are light in stores in the brood nest. Add supers only to the top of the filled ones, not below them, unless hives are near a commercial crop (add supers below filled ones). Check colonies for queen and requeen if queenless. Check colonies for old queens and replace with young ones. Requeen any colony with undesirable traits such as poor production, mean temper, European Foulbrood, poor brood pattern, unwanted color markings, etc. Continue to be on the lookout for American Foulbrood. Remove supers containing well ripened honey to extract. Don t tempt robber bees with exposed honey. Place any extracted honey frames to be stored in a dry, cool area, with moth crystals. Depending on your apiary location and on the weather, a critical nectar dearth exists between July 10 and Sept. 1 in this area. continued on page 7 From: W.V.B.A. Newsletter ( June 2013), pages 1 3, 8 9. 2 Oliver Petty still going strong at 99. by Dewey M. Caron, A legend among Oregon Beekeepers, Oliver Petty celebrated his 99 th birthday in June. I first met Oliver and Connie Petty in They sat down front when I talked on the ABF program in Philadelphia. After my talk they offered some friendly advice. Oliver, then secretary/treasurer of the Oregon State Beekeepers by offering advice was merely doing what came naturally teaching the next generation of beekeepers. For over 40 years as commercial beekeeper and bee supply dealer in Albany OR, Oliver taught many youth through 4-H and in summer jobs for local teens in his honey business. Oliver, born in Goshen OR, started beekeeping in 1950 when he purchased 500 colonies of bees in northern California where he was an apprentice with beekeeper George Biggers in Whittier. When he went to pick up the colonies, the beekeeper apologized that the 500 colonies offered were only ½ size as each box had a follower board dividing the hive in two. The colonies split easily in Oregon after their early head start in CA and Oliver doubled his colony number. He had beginners luck with his new bees producing 100+ pounds of water-white hairy vetch honey in Oregon and was able to pay off his bee purchase. In addition to his own bees, Oliver also managed bees for Heins Honey Co of Albany and he sold bee supplies. At one time he expanded to 2300 colonies but sought to maintain around 1000 colonies most years. He sold his bee business (Fairview Apiaries) in the early 1980 s to John Mespelt, who was one of many beekeepers he trained over the years. Oliver kept a few colonies on Gibson Hill Road up until his 97 th birthday. As Secretary of the Oregon beekeepers for 23 years, Oliver attended many bee meetings, both in Oregon and beyond. Oliver Petty attended many ABF meetings where he often took top prize for his light honey at the convention honey show. Oliver was the organizer for the 1969 ABF convention held in Portland, OR and he and wife/journalist Connie supplied the journals with articles on what to do and see in Oregon with a flair for some of the history of the area. One interesting promo was to put up photos of directors and delegates as WANTED POSTERS the year before the OR convention posters said WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE in PORTLAND NEXT ABF The Portland convention was a momentous meeting, as the AHPA split from ABF during this time. It was the last single national convention until Sacramento in 2008, the last ABF Oliver attended (with Harry vanderpool). He also attended the NW OR/WA convention that fall and was a frequent attendee to WVBA meetings when he could get a ride. Oliver largely produced honey during the early years of his beekeeping (which was then the norm for beekeepers). Oliver pioneered moving bees further distances as formerly reliable honey crops changed with agricultural changes in the Willamette Valley. He rented bees to nearby cherry orchards originally at $3 per colony. By the time he sold his business nearly 3 decades later, his rental price was triple. As he was thinking of getting out of bees, Oliver started taking colonies to CA almonds for pollination. His initial trip totaled 312 col. He showed John Mespelt the virtue of good rental opportunities in a 400 ac orchard in Chowchilla CA 675 miles from Albany. His initial fee was $12/colony rental. Page 2
3 Oliver Petty still going strong at 99. by Dewey M. Caron, Oliver was one of the early beekeepers to move bees over the Cascade Mountains to drier eastern Oregon for seed pollination. On one trip, Oliver s young helper fell asleep and the bee truck overturned on the Deschutes River bridge, a narrow bridge some 300 feet over the river gorge. Unhurt, Oliver and the helper salvaged what they could by placing the hives on the edge of bridge before getting a local farmer to help get the damaged truck to the nearest town. When he returned just about dawn, the Oregon police wanted to know why in the world had he set the colonies up on the edge of the bridge. The major road remained closed for a day until the bees could be reloaded that evening to continue their trip to pollinate the carrot fields. Two of Oliver s 3 sons became beekeepers. Walter, the oldest son and a CPA in Eugene area, still maintains a backyard bee colony. Beekeeping was responsible for Walter getting through College. At the San Diego convention 17 years after he started, Oliver again looked to buy CA bees, this time for his son, then in high school. Oliver bought 100 colonies from a beekeeper near Sacramento and he and Walter rented them to an Orchardist west of Salem which covered purchase cost of the bees. Walter managed the colonies and put himself through college with the bees then sold his bees to brother Dean. The bees eventually went back to Oliver when Dean went to College in Texas. Prior to their own bees, the 2 boys helped Oliver with bees up until/through their College years. Connie helped move and with the bees in the earliest years. Oliver is a lifetime member of the Oregon State Beekeepers and received their AWARD OF APPRECIATION for his many years of services to OR beekeepers. He also was presented the Diamond Pioneer Agricultural Award by Friends of Oregon Ag. At the th Annual Western Apiculture Society convention I recognized Oliver s 60 years of distinguished service to beekeeping. On his 99 th birthday WVBA webmaster Dick temple represented the WVBA and George Hanson and Marge Ehry were present on behalf of the Oregon State beekeepers. Oliver, now in a nursing home in Albany, wanted to know when the next WVBA bee meeting was and if he could get a ride. Page 3
