November 2017 Omaha, Nebraska President's Message Hello Fellow Meadowlarks! We are soon to be entering November. Outdoor car tours will be slowing down or ending. The Meadowlark Scavenger Hunt was a hoot. The food was good, the weather absolutely beautiful, the hunt was a lot of fun. We all had fun discovering the Krueger family history as one of the sites on our list! No one had any car trouble (only a few backfires). So it was what I call a perfect outing. A big thank you to John Leddy for putting this tour together. We have passed the Bylaws at our last General Meeting. So now the next project to hunker down on is the Policy & Procedure Manual which we have been doing. Hopefully to be fully completed by late November or early December. Our next adventure will be the Meadowlark Bus Trip to the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners, Michigan. Janet and Don Graves have worked very hard on putting this together and I am sure it will be a full itinerary and fun for all. The leaves will be changing and the views should be gorgeous. Well, I have been thinking about the year 1917, a hundred years ago. And I found an interesting timeline of events. I thought I would share a few with you: Nebraska Population in 1917 was million people, the largest city being Omaha of course. The first US Troops arrived in France in June of 1917 in WWI. The 1917 Nebraska Cornhusker football team was coached by E.J. Stewart and played their home games at Nebraska Field in Lincoln. We played: Nebraska s Wesleyan, Iowa, Notre Dame, Michigan, Missouri, Kansas, & Syracuse. Stewart greatly expanded his roster to 22 players, an increase of almost 30% from the 17 players on the squad in Nebraska lost to Michigan (0-20) and Syracuse (9-10). Coach Stewart departed the football program after this year in order to assist in the war effort (WWI). (1917 Nebraska Cornhusker football team. Wikipedia, 22 September 2017). World Events in 1917: The U.S. has war with Poncho Villa, purchases the Danish West Indies (US Virgin Islands) from Denmark for $25 million, & the Jones Act grants Puerto Ricans U.S. Citizenship. The Ottoman Empire is at odds with the British Empire (British Egyptian Expeditionary Forces )(Battle of Rafa & Battles of Gaza). Mexico has its Revolution & V. Carranza is elected President, the US gives recognition of his government. Czar Nicholas II abdicates his throne, ending 196 years of the Russian Empire, & a Provisional Government is set up. Power passes to this Provisional Government under Prince George Lvov (later Kerensky). The United States declared war on Germany on April 6 th. The Republic of China terminates diplomatic relations with Germany on March 14 th, and declares war on Germany & Austria Hungary on August 14th. The Autonomous Governorate of Estonia is formed with Russia along with the northern part of Livonia on April 12. Vladimir Lenin arrives (returning after exile from the July Revolution) to Finland Station in Petrograd, & the Bolshevik Party pushes for revolution. On November 7, The Workers of the Petrograd Soviet in Russia, led by the Bolshevik Party (under Lenin)( a small party compared to the others), storm the Winter Palace and destroy the Kerensky Provisional Government (had 8 months of rule) which triggers the Russian Civil War. On November 28 th the Bolsheviks offer peace terms to the Germans. On December 20 th the Cheka (predecessor to the KGB) is established in Russia. Greece joined the allies on July 2 nd. Brazil declares war on the Central Powers on October 26 th. Wow, the more I learn, the more complicated it gets. And this is just a little tid bit of what was going on. And we think the world is complicated now! Well, Please stay calm & carry on. Esther If you have not paid your 2018 Meadowlark dues yet, please do so at the November meeting. Dues are $24.00 per year per family. They will be delinquent on the first of December. A late fee of $6.00 will be assessed after December 1. You can also send your dues to our club mailbox: Attention: Treasurer, Meadowlark Model A Ford Club, PO Box 6011, Omaha, NE No late fee will be assessed if your dues are post-marked by December 1. 1

Upcoming Events Highway Pickup rescheduled to November 4 Members, I am sorry that I let the weather men scare me off on the 21 of October. They were just sure that we were going to get a lot of rain on Saturday, and I took the bait hook, line, and sinker!! I probably should have kept the clean up on Saturday rather than re-scheduling it to the 4th of November. I had 13 volunteers, one more than had signed up. Hope that I can get that kind of turn out again for the 4th. Don Ohnstad has agreed to still open his Man Cave up for us on the 4th, so I am hoping we will still have a good number of volunteers. I know two of my regulars won't be able to make it because of a Family Birthday Party. So I am hoping others will step up and take their place. Same Time, Same Place just two weeks later. Since we won't have a meeting before that date, would members please call me and confirm your intentions to help. Thanks, Howard Denker, Photo Shoot scheduled for Nov. 5 has been postponed until Spring. Help Hy-Vee at 180th and Pacific honor Veterans on November 11 (Veterans Day) They would like to have a small car display from 8 to 11AM while they serve a free breakfast for Veterans. They don t have room for a bunch of cars, so please check with Dave Miller if you want to add your name to the list or drop out. Special November Meeting Election, then a Chili Cook-off and Bunco! It s Chili Time! So, let s see who makes the best chili! Bring a pot of your favorite Chili to the November meeting. We will have a panel of judges who will decide whose is best, but we all will be able to enjoy the chili. It works best to bring it in a crock pot/slow cooker. If you don t want to bring chili, bring something else that goes with chili. We are always open to appetizers or dessert, etc. The club will furnish bowls, spoons, small plates plus coffee and a cold drink. After we meet and eat, we will play Bunco. If you are uninitiated, Bunco is a fun and easy dice game. Anyone over about 5 years old can play it. Don t miss it! The Nomination Committee has been working hard to get nominations for our election. Nominations can still be added. If you know of someone who would like to be on the ballot or you would like to be, call up Bob McKinney, Jim Musel, or Don Graves to let them know. Or, you can make the nomination at the meeting. Be sure you have the permission of the person you nominate. These are the nominations so far: Vice-President/ Secretary Board of Directors President-Elect Sue Dellinger Ed Dellinger Ken Grigsby Mary Denker Dave Miller Jim Musel Esther Miller Mike Tritsch Karen Wickey Even if you don t nominate anyone, be sure to come to the meeting to VOTE. 4

Past Events Scavenger Hunt John Leddy picked just the right day for a Fall Tour. The weather was beautiful. The Scavenger Hunt led us through many rural roads in Sarpy, Cass, and Saunders counties. We looked for answers to many questions about items from windmills to solar panels. We visited the Indian Mound Cemetery and looked for ancestors of Meadowlark families, especially Ken Krueger s grandparents. Thanks to John for planning this tour. 5

The Gilmore Bus Trip October We started out on Friday morning from Gretna. It was cold! But we dressed warm. The 12 hour bus ride was lo-o-o-ng. The Model A Museum has lots to look at besides cars and trucks. Lots of beautiful Model A era clothes and accessories like the license topper above. Our club brick 6

Recent Events in which our Members Participated Model A s at Arbor Lodge At left is a picture of the Model As/AAs displayed at Arbor Lodge on September 17, There were a total of 13 Model As/AAs displayed in front of the Lodge including 8 1/2 from the Cornhusker Club, 1 1/2 from the Meadowlark Club, 1 individual from Lincoln and 2 individuals from Nebraska City. Of course, Nancy & I are the 1/2's here. (They are members of both clubs). Meadowlark members present: Gayle & Nancy Hanshaw (1931 Tudor) and Brian & Jodie Gernandt (1930 Coupe). Submitted by Gayle Hanshaw. Model As Help Teach History at Central High On September 28th six Model A and T cars were displayed at Central High School to illustrate the significance of Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company on the American Industrial Revolution of early 20th Century. Students from five periods of Advanced American History came to the parking lot where their instructors and the car owners discussed the impact of Ford on the culture, society and economy of America. Few of the students had ever touched or even seen vintage Fords and many discussed how the event made their study of the industrial revolution more meaningful. It was a fun and educational experience for them and also enjoyed by the instructors and the drivers of the cars. Meadowlark members attending were Ken Grigsby, Ed Dellinger, Charles Earnest, Mike Cahalane, and Barney Deden. Thanks to Howard Denker for the October Tech Talk Howard presented how to add turn signals to your Model A. Sad Story Do you wonder how many beautiful Model As have been lost in the fires, hurricanes and floods this year? Here is an A-400 which was lost in the California fires. Sad! BEFORE AFTER 3

More Recent Events in which our Members Participated GAMARAI XXII by El Gertner GAMARAI stands for Great American Model A Ride Around Iowa. This year s event was held September 18-22nd in and around Davenport, Iowa. We had three cars and six Meadowlark members attending this year. They were Charles and Suzanne Earnest, Bob Benton, Dale Jergensen, and El and Dot Gertner. We left Omaha on Sunday about 1:30 in the afternoon to drive to Des Moines to meet the larger group on Monday morning. On the way east out of Omaha about 60 miles, Dale s new engine developed a noise he didn t want to hear. Thanks to a good friend and Model A club member, John Leddy came to the rescue and took his car back home. Dale and Bob finished the week in Dale s Mustang. On Monday, the whole group spent the day driving to Davenport. On our way we were able to spend time at the Amana Colonies for a lunch break. There were 40 cars and 72 Model A people in attendance. Tuesday and Wednesday was spent driving and taking in the sights around the Quad Cities. The sights we were able to attend were Buffalo Bill s Museum and Lone Star Steamer, and The Pickers and The Walnut Grove Village. We enjoyed Dahl Ford collection, Buffalo Bills home, Black Hawk State Historical Site, Craig Beek s Museum, and John Deere Pavilion. On Thursday on our way to Iowa City we had to skip the Pearl Museum in Muscatine because of flooding the night before. We went right on to Herbert Hoover s Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch, Iowa. We took in the Johnson County Historical Society and Museum along with the Antique Car Museum in Coralville, Iowa. We stayed the night in Coralville. On Friday we headed for Des Moines to stay over night. We had a special stop for lunch at a Marina called Jumpin' Jimmie s at Lake Ponderosa. We enjoyed outdoor seating overlooking the lake. We had a good trip back to Des Moines even though it was a little warmer than our trip on Monday. The Earnests and Gertners found a nice restaurant in Des Moines and headed home on Saturday. 7
