3 COUNCILLOR REPORT Councillor News Report July 2016 We all have been through a very difficult time due to the wild fire that spread through our area. It was probably one of the most trying times in our region s history. It is so good to see the communities pulling together before and after the fire. Gregoire Lake Estates is having a Welcome Back barbeque on July 9 th starting at 3:00 pm at the Cul de Sac on the west end of Gregoire Avenue. Anzac is having a 2016 Wild Fire Appreciation and family fun day on July 16 th, starting at 11:00 am at Willow Lake Landing (the strip mall on Stoney Mountain Road). The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is moving forward with the annual Canada Day parade on July 1 st. The parade route will be between Riedel Street and Franklin Avenue starting at 11:00 am. I was in Conklin this past weekend to celebrate the Grade 12 graduation for 10 students. It was very well organized; the hall was nicely decorated and as usual the food was so good. Congratulations to all the Graduates. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to make the event such a success. During the event Conklin school gave me a cheque to deliver to the Food Bank for $3, The students used part of their funding for a school trip to give to the Food Bank. I want to give a big thank you to the students for thinking of residents who are struggling at this time due to the wild fire. I was also able to celebrate the Grade 12 graduation in Edmonton for the Bill Woodward school students from Anzac. I was so happy to be invited and such a nice event. Congratulations to all the Graduates. I want to thank all the residents in Ward 4 who came to the Council meeting to support the rural capital projects. It was so great to see all the residents who came up and made presentations to Council. The gallery was full of rural residents. Thank you so much for working so hard to push through much needed projects for Ward 4. All the designs for the four hamlets for piped water and sewer will be finished this year. As we have missed two months of construction residents were promised by administration that the project will commence at the beginning of next year pending Council s approval. The Conklin multi-use is suspended at the present time. There will be a further review on July 19 th on capital projects. I have taken pictures of the construction area of the Conklin multi-use. In reading the budget the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo has spent over 16 million dollars on the project as of September 15, There are 13 trailer loads of steel sitting on site right now and 65 to 70% of the prefabricated materials have been ordered for the project. It is so good to see the guard rail fixed at Gregoire Lake Estates, flowers planted and grass being cut in all areas of Ward 4. I was in Janvier this past month and the place making is coming along nicely. For any good deeds or concerns please jane.stroud@rmwb.ca or telephone

7 COMMUNITY CORNER An open letter to the Anzac Volunteer Fire Department and those who assisted with water and equipment: Yesterday was a hard day for me and my family. I returned to my home town. I knew my house that was built for me was not there anymore. And I knew the house that I grew up in was not there anymore. Those two homes, the night before Anzac was evacuated held more than 20 evacuees from Fort McMurray. We are proud of that. What I didn't know was that the rest of the community would look as beautiful as it was when I left a month ago. My heart hurts from the losses that my family has to endure. But soaring WAY above that is the pride that the fire department got fighting mad in true Anzac style and saved the majority of the homes in the community with little to no assistance. Anzac Strong. My parents, husband and I spent several years on that very fire department and can empathize with the department on the anger, sorrow, and grief you feel over what you couldn't save. I saw that in the face and voice of the one firefighter that we had the opportunity to speak with yesterday. Your hug meant a lot to us. To those who called the evacuation, thank you. The cost could have been greater, were it not for that decision. To all the brave souls that stayed to face the beast, we say to you that you did Anzac proud, you did yourselves proud, and our families are so proud of you. You did what many could not. You faced the beast and held it back. There may have been minor losses in the grand scheme but there is nothing more expected from you. We, in no way, hold the fire department and those that assisted, responsible or accountable for the loss of the homes. That accountability is held elsewhere. Those of us who have insurance will work through it that way. My parents, who didn't have insurance will figure it out - maybe the government, be it municipal or provincial will assist in the clean up and rebuild, considering there wasn't much assistance for the fire department to fight the fire that destroyed it. I hope that the municipality and province recognize what you did. I'm sure that the residents of Anzac do. To those of you who fought, my family and I consider it a win. You have our utmost thanks and gratitude. Much thanks, love, and gratitude The Gagne and Menchenton families 7

17 SENIOR S CORNER Emergency Scams Criminals wear many different masks to make you believe they re people you know or can trust. Sometimes they pretend to be family members or friends who have run into trouble and are now asking you to send them money immediately through a money transfer service. Although accidents can happen, these emergency scams are increasingly common and Western Union (NYSE: WU), a leader in global payment services, cautions against sending money to people who claim to be family members and friends for emergencies without first confirming that the person is actually in trouble. "As part of an effort to raise consumer awareness about various types of fraud, Western Union is distributing this poster at locations around the United States and Canada. For more information about how to protect yourself from fraud go to westernunion.com/stopfraud." (Photo: Business Wire) Emergency scams are especially cruel crimes because they play off of our emotions and our strong desire to help others in need, said Joseph Cachey III, acting general counsel & chief compliance officer of Western Union. These scams are effective because scammers hit their victims with such a forceful emotional punch and create such a strong sense of urgency that they become difficult to resist. People need to set their emotions aside and take a few minutes to confirm the facts of the situation and not send the money. There are several types of emergency scams, but two of the most common are the Grandparent Scam and the Social Networking Scam, which operate as follows: Grandparent Scam Grandparents across the country are falling victim to a surprisingly effective scam in which they receive phone calls from people who claim to be their grandchildren and frantically ask for money. The telephone calls often come late at night with the callers saying they re in an emergency situation, such as a car accident or that they have been arrested. The scammers posing as grandchildren usually beg their victims not to call their parents or tell others about the predicament and often ask them to send money through a money transfer service as quickly as possible. In some cases, the scammer may hand the phone to an accomplice who pretends to be an attorney, police officer or some other authority figure in order to give the scam more credibility and create a greater sense of urgency. 17
