1 T.T.O.S. southwestern division PRESIDENT S MESSAGE LARRY PEARSON, President T.T.O.S. Southwestern Division West Palm Ave., Burbank, CA (818) (mornings after 8:00 a.m.) Please be advised that the following article is comprised solely of my own thoughts, opinions, and experiences, and does not necessarily convey the beliefs and thoughts of the T.T.O.S. Southwestern Division (SWD), and its Members and Officers, or the editor and publisher of The Southwestern Limited. Call me at the above phone number in the mornings after 8:00am if you need to get in touch with me. Call, I love to talk rd CAL-STEWART REPORT Attendance at Cal-Stewart 2015 was about the same as last year s Meet. Those who came, sold and bought, and enjoyed the eight layouts and the Special Display had a great time. Table sales were about 310 and all sellers tables were sold out when the Meet opened on Saturday morning. The Friday night Welcoming Party was coordinated by Jerry Moser and had 145 attendees. There was plenty of food and dessert for everyone to have seconds if they wanted. The complete buffet dinner featured Pan Seared Pesto Chicken Breast, Santa Maria BBQ Tri-Tip, seasonal vegetables, mashed potatoes and both chocolate cake and cheese cake for dessert. Don Ladenberger and Larry Pearson donated money for extra dessert portions. Fred Kramer conducted a lively Drawing at the party that netted Nancy Cochran $375. Three Lionel freight cars were awarded as consolation prizes. Mike Stella came up with a very entertaining scheme for awarding the table center pieces and then he auctioned off additional train items donated by the manufacturers. I needed someone to sing the National Anthem because the young lady who was supposed to sing it couldn t bring herself to do it. I looked down and a man in a yellow knit American Flyer shirt said I ll do it. I helped him up on the podium, and he did a beautiful job!!! I never got his name, but it was very much appreciated. We had eight layouts of various sizes coordinated by Jerry Moser for Cal-Stewart The priority is table sales with layouts to be fillers in available space. The eight layouts were: Richard Kepple s floor layout (25x25); Larry Poland s floor layout (12x12)(combined with Kepple); N Gauge layout (12x27); Southern Pacific Division & Orange County Trackers (20x50); Grand Canyon Model Railroaders portable trailer layout (12x16); So. Cal. S-Gaugers (34x34); Don Kallgren s Std. Gauge (10x40); and Ulus Ekerman s LEGO layout (12x16). The annual Cal-Stewart Special Display theme for 2015 was Lionel house cars and drew from Mike Stella s extensive collection with Hollis Cotton, coordinator. During the first half of the 20 th century, most goods were shipped in what the railroads called house cars. They were used for cargo requiring protection from the weather and were built much like a house with roofs, walls and doors, thus the name. Today we know them as enclosed freight cars such as box, refrigerator and stock cars. Mike displayed several hundred of these cars from his personal collection on special shelving that he built. Ginny Cotton designed the worker hats with the House Cars theme. The design was very popular, and the extra hats were all sold at the Meet. Thank you to Mike Marple for bringing many train parts. This was most appreciated at Cal-Stewart! Rich Kobliner, SWD Auction Manager, oversaw and clerked the Saturday and Sunday auctions. George Blanch did most of the auctioning both days, a considerable effort. Almost $4,000 in merchandise was sold through the auction. (continued on page 2) February Meet: Sunday, February 14, 2016 Special Gift for the Ladies

2 President s Message (continued from page 1) Jon Pincus brought his race track and ran the annual Train Races and Demolition Derby with the help of Spencer Smith. Sign up and testing occurred on Saturday from 1-3pm and the racing started at 1pm on Sunday. Participants who didn t have a locomotive to race were given a donated locomotive. We want as many kids to participate as possible. Trophies were awarded to the winners. We need donations of plastic Marx locomotives for Cal- Stewart Many members donate their time and expertise to the Cal-Stewart event. Don Stotts and his friends and family provided security throughout the event. Rich Lowe and his daughter Julianne Hamstrom handled the Cal-Stewart Registration effort and table assignments. Hollis Cotton, Cal-Stewart cochairman with Jerry Moser, worked with the Ontario Convention Center staff to lay out the Trading Hall with seller s tables and layouts. Jerry Moser was the contact person with the Ontario Convention Center and the liaison with the Radisson and Ayres hotels, in addition to coordinating the Welcoming Dinner Party and layouts. Martin Folb and Mike Roman photographed the Meet. Calvin and Phyllis Smith with The Train Shack, Inc. donated a Lionel train set for the special Public Drawing held on Sunday. The Meet ended on Sunday with the Grand Drawing at 3pm, hosted by Fred Kramer. The prizes were individual locomotives, cars and boxed train sets. Bill Elliott, Emmett Van Ness, and Larry Pearson made sure that the Trading Hall was clean before we left on Sunday night. CAL-STEWART 2016 TO BE AT FAIRPLEX NOV. 18, 19, 20 We had a three year contract with the Ontario Convention Center (OCC) that needed renewing for The OCC people lured us away from Pasadena with some pretty good pricing on the hall, chairs and staffing, and we were hopeful that this would continue for three more years. Jerry Moser tried to get a similar contract, but it was not to be. The OCC people wanted us to sign a contract that had no set pricing on staffing costs, chairs, risers, drapes, tables with skirting, the banquet and the like. This is unacceptable to us. We have to know what the costs will be. Since we didn t sign the contract, OCC then gave our dates for Hall A for the next three years to some kind on religious youth group who wanted Hall A as well as all three banquet rooms on the first floor. We looked at other venues, and they were much too small for our needs. So we signed a contract 2 with the Pomona Fairgrounds (FAIRPLEX) for Building 6 for They would not do a three year contract at this time. We have a lot of work to do to get reasonable hotel rates and a place for our Welcoming Dinner Party. Some good features are free electricity (everywhere in the floor and on the walls), and the huge G gauge outdoor layout is about 100 feet away. There are three large roll-up doors for easy move in and move out. The costs will be similar to the deal we had at OCC. I will keep you updated. FOOD SERVICE AT THE ARCADIA MASONIC CENTER I got a call from Sharon Ayub on Saturday morning, January 9 th informing me that she and Cliff Saylor were terminated from providing food service at the Arcadia Masonic Center, effective immediately. She said that some new people were selected to do our food service and that we would have food service for our Meet the next day. I managed to talk to the new manager of the Hall, and he assured me that we would have food service for our Meet. The new people, whose names are Mary Swenson and Donald Benton, are very nice, but had no idea what our needs are. Considering that they had no time to prepare, they did a pretty good job of it. I am not going to get involved with the politics in the Masonic Center to try to reverse this. Be patient and I think that everything will work out just fine. Let them know what you want to eat and they probably can provide it. Please support Southwestern by continuing your Membership, recruiting new Members, buying our souvenir cars, and attending our monthly Meets and Cal-Stewart. As always, hugs to all, and run your trains often. 4 Dear Larry Pearson, I am writing you to say Thank You for taking your time at the January SW Division meet to repair the Lionel #2350 chassis that wouldn t budge when first handed to you. I watched you disassemble the motor truck, free the gummed up gears and wheels, clean and rebuild the E unit, solder a broken motor wire, test for proper operation, and then return to me a perfectly working locomotive chassis that purred like a kitten! I know you refuse to accept anything but a verbal Thank You for all your efforts so I am sending a cash donation to the SW Division Treasury in your name to help our Club with ongoing expenses. I have been watching you repair trains at our meets for years, often spending 6 or more hours helping members get their trains running. You always remain well past the end of the regular meeting if there are still trains that need your attention. You even take them home when time is short!! I hope other members that you help will follow my lead and also make a donation to the club. A repair station would charge hundreds of dollars for what you give for free! A small monetary Thank You from them would help SW Division continue all the low cost services provided. I hope that I am not the only SW member Meet Dates 2016 Jan. 24 Feb. 28 Mar. 20 Apr. 24 May 29** June 26 July 24 Aug. 28 Sept. 25 Oct. 23 Nov. 13 Picnic Dec. 18** Sundays 11:00-3:00*** Special hours for **Open House Meets 9:30 to 4:30 ***See web more info or call Jeff Meyer, President at (909) Jun 20 Also Open House Sat. 9 Mike Stella Muses About The SWD Year Ahead Cal-Stewart 2015 is now in the books and already the plans for 2016 are well under way, not just for the November Cal-Stewart but for the entire year. Do you realize that 2016 marks the 50th year that we have been holding toy train meets? We ought to celebrate. We Will! January is already here and I hope we ll see a big turn-out of members and a push to recruit new members (as dues are prorated for the first six months to 1/2 price). Time to bring your friends and sign them up. February our meet will be held on the 14th, which some of you might realize is a special day for your significant other. Let s make it a SWEETHEART meet and bring your sweetie to share the time with you and bring lots of RED trains so there will be gifts for you to buy and share. March will be the first OPEN HOUSE of 2016, on March 13th. We seem to have extra large meets on Open House days. Invite your friends and extended family members. Treat your mother-in-law to a day out. April will see our meet on the April s Fool weekend. You d be a fool to miss it... something special planned. MAYDAY! MAYDAY!! Don t be alarmed. May 1st is indeed a day celebrated in other parts of the world. We just may celebrate it too. Wait and see. June already, and on the 5th we will host our second OPEN HOUSE. We are the ONLY club in Southern California that opens our doors once per quarter and we don t even asked for a quarter to attend. Why not pick up a few free passes early this year and carry them with you to pass out to people you meet and share your hobby and help us grow? July is Independence month and we move our meet to the second weekend (July 10th) so everyone can enjoy the long holiday weekend of the 4th. It still will be a firecracker meet and not to be missed. August will see the National T.T.O.S. celebration of 50 years of playing with toy trains. I hope you are planning on joining the fun, but if you miss it you can catch up by attending our annual member-appreciation picnic the following weekend. Everyone is invited and it is a great opportunity to ask all those who love toy trains to become involved with SW Division. Can you believe it? September is already here and another OPEN HOUSE! You ve now have had THREE chances to invite your friends. Our membership should swell to over 500! October is an open month so far... any ideas?? Well here we are with the 44th Cal-Stewart meet once again in November. Didn t the year pass by quickly? New venue, new banquet, new hotel, new everything... EVEN a new POTUS. (Help us!) If all has gone well to this point we will celebrate the Christmas Holidaze with none other but our FOURTH OPEN HOUSE. A great year to be shared by all... I can t wait. I wonder how we will celebrate our toy train hobby 50 years from now? HAPPY 2016 TO ALL and to all a GOOD NITE.
