Meetings Aug 4 and 11 Ed King, DG 2010/11 and wife Sheena We meet at the Public Schools Club, 207 East Tce (on the corner of Carrington St and East Tce) Wednesday nights at 5.45pm for a 6.15pm start. Ph President: Bob Congdon bobcongdon@internode.on.net Secretary: Vic Gudiskis vgudiskis@yahoo.com.au Treasurer: Henry Slater hlslater@bigpond.com Postal Address: PO Box 7056 Hutt St, Adelaide 5000 Ray Klinginsmith RI President 2010/11 Bill Gates and Polio Plus Bill Gates says he is impressed with the progress Nigeria has made against polio and urges partners in the fight to eradicate the disease not to let up. Gates, cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, shared personal observations from his June trip to Nigeria on his blog, Gates Notes. The post, along with others about polio, are appearing this week on the Gates Foundation blog, Foundation Notes. In addition, the Gates Foundation website is highlighting two videos produced in June for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. "I was very excited to visit northern Nigeria in June, because the progress there since my last visit in February 2009 has been especially impressive," Gates writes. As of 20 July, only six cases of the wild poliovirus have been reported in Nigeria this year, compared with 346 during the same period in The Gates Foundation has given Rotary US$355 million in grants for its work to eradicate polio. In response, Rotary has committed to raising $200 million. As of 30 June, Rotary has raised $141.2 million. On his blog, Gates says he spent most of his first day in the northern state of Kano, which has been vulnerable to polio, meeting with community leaders, visiting a local health center, and stopping at a school where students were studying the Quran in Arabic. "On the streets and most everywhere else we went, I noticed so many young children around," he writes. "Nigeria has more people by far than any other African country, and more than 40 percent of them are under the age of 15. That makes polio immunization a big challenge." Gates adds that during his trip, he learned about creative approaches to inform Nigerians about polio immunization. Pro-immunization messages are being woven into the plotlines of popular TV shows, and one of Nigeria's major mobile phone service providers has agreed to send about 25 million free text messages about polio and health. He also mentions the importance of engaging local leaders and says the 'commitment from Nigeria's leaders has been crucial' to the fight against polio in the country. While in the capital city of Abuja, he had dinner with the minister of health, and the next day met with the nation's new president, Goodluck Jonathan. One of the videos on the Gates Foundation website praises efforts that have reduced the threat of polio by 99 percent but stresses the need to finish the job. "If you were an athlete, you would never only run 99 percent of the race," a voiceover on the video announces. "An astronaut wouldn't fly only 99 percent of the way to the moon, and a firefighter would never just put out 99 percent of a fire." PARKSLETTER If you change your contact details PLEASE make sure you advise Kathy Cotter (kcotter99@optusnet.com.au) of the changes so she can keep our club database up to date

A Message from the President Greetings Adelaide Parks Rotarians, District Conference Early Bird registration extended. The Early Bird rate for the District Conference was to have closed on the 31 st. of July. Plan now for 2011 and be at the convention One month into Marine Corps training in San Diego, Calif., we were preparing for a ten-mile march in 100-degree weather when a jeep drove up with a large radio in the back. "Who knows anything about radios?" our drill instructor asked. Several hands went up, and anticipating a ride in the jeep, recruits began listing their credentials. Everything from a degree in communications to a parttime job in a repair shop was declared. The DI listened to all the contenders, then pointed to the most qualified. "You," he barked. "Carry the radio." This has been extended to the 7 th. of August. Rotarians, I encourage you to consider attending this conference which will feature some very high profile speakers. Among them is Tim Costello who has been a leader in areas of social justice in Australia for many years. His concern for the suffering came to the fore following the 2004 tsunami when provided leadership in the relief operations in the region. Correction to Payment Details Please note however that the bank account details provided on the website for direct funds transfer are incorrect. Four digits were omitted from the account number provided. The correct details are as follows;_ BSB: A/c No: A/c name: D9500 Conference. more on next page... "I am enclosing two tickets to the first night of my new play; bring a friend... if you have one." - George Bernard Shaw to Winston Churchill "Cannot possibly attend first night, will attend second... if there is one." - Winston Churchill, in response.

A man receives a phone call from his doctor. The doctor says, I have some good news and some bad news. The man says, OK, give me the good news first. The doctor says, The good news is, you have 24 hours to live. The man replies, Oh no! If that s the good news, then what s the bad news? The doctor says, The bad news is, I forgot to call you yesterday. The Four Way Test Of the things we think, say or do 1 Is it the Truth? 2 Is it Fair to all concerned? 3 Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships? 4 Will it be Beneficial to all concerned? From The President (con't) Contributing to your Club s FY10-11 Objectives We need your help Our aggressive objectives for each portfolio are included in this Parksletter. We need to maximize the synergy of our club through full participation of all members. There are still places available in each portfolio team. If you are not currently included in one of these teams I encourage you to volunteer now. There is a lot to be done this year Your help is needed and will be most welcome. There is an opportunity for you to feel the pleasure which comes from fulfillment as you apply your skills and experience to worthwhile goals and objectives. Fellowship- Movie Matching Jack Sunday 15 th. of August A pre-release screening of Matching Jack at the Piccadilly at 10.30am will support the ongoing Rotary Polio eradication program. The total admission charge of $10.00 will be contributed to the program. This is also a fellowship opportunity. Is there a volunteer who would like to organize a club lunch to follow the movie? Please contact me asap if you would like to be the club convener of this event. Tickets will be available on first come basis. Yours in Rotary, Bob. "Why do you sit there looking like an envelope without any address on it?" - Mark Twain

Some people ask the secret of our long marriage, we take time to go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candlelight dinner, soft music and dancing. She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays. Here is the first of the information on one of our 3 students who won a scholarship at the AGN school I once wrote a book called "How to Keep an Idiot Entertained for Hours". It went like this: To keep an idiot entertained for hours, read the next sentence. To keep an idiot entertained for hours, read the previous sentence. It didn t sell very well. I thought with the short attention span of people these days it may have been too long, so I rewrote it. The 2nd edition went: To keep an idiot busy for hours, re-read this sentence. It s doing pretty good. I have a deal for the sequel. The 3rd edition is going to go: Re-read this line. Trouble is, I m not as sharp as I used to be, so it s become my favorite book to curl up with on a rainy day. It absorbs me for hours. "He is simply a shiver looking for a spine to run up." - Paul Keating

RAISING THE ROOF A fundraising event for the Helen Flavel Foundation and the Humanity Building Project 2010, Nepal A Saturday Night Special event, music and dancing with CROSSROADS Adelaide s super band. WHEN: Saturday 28 August at 7.30 pm WHERE: Norwood Town Hall, Norwood Parade COST: BYO $25 each To Book a table or buy tickets phone Lyn on or bhandke@adam.com.au A large group of Taliban soldiers are moving down a road when they hear a voice call out from behind a sand dune saying, "One Commando is better than ten Taliban." The Taliban commander quickly sends 10 of his best soldiers over the dune whereupon a gun battle breaks out and continues for a few minutes, then silence. The voice then calls out, "One Commando is better than a hundred Taliban soldiers." Furious, the Taliban commander sends his next best 100 troops over the dune and instantly a huge gun fight commences.. After 10 minutes of battle, again silence. The Commando voice calls out, "One Commando is better than one thousand Taliban." The enraged Taliban commander musters a thousand fighters and sends them over the dune. Cannon, rocket, and machine gun fire rings out as a huge battle is fought.. Then silence. Finally one wounded Taliban fighter crawls back over the dune and with his dying words tells his commander, "Don't send any more men, it's a trap. There are two of them."
