How it began, what happened, who were the players, and how did it turn out? Gloucester and the strongholds of Peleliu, across the bloody sands of Iwo Jima, through the horror of Okinawa, and finally to their triumphant but uneasy return home after V-J Day. Local artist & illustrator, Lisa Davis DeMattei, will demonstrate art techniques that can be therapeutic. A number of different art mediums will be made available for participants. Tuesday, October 16 7 pm SMILE! Quartet of Ce Merrigan, Mary Ann Anderson, Teresa Swank, and Chris Wolf will sing songs from the 1940s. Thursday, October 18 6:30 pm HOT DOGS AND BASEBALL Sterling Library A children s program showing how baseball was important during this era. Hot dogs and apple pie will be served. Saturday, October 20 5:30-7:30 pm SURVIVOR WORLD WAR II (AGES 12-ADULT) Lincoln Park Library During this after-hours program, participants will take part in a variety of tasks to learn about the challenges of surviving during the Second World War, both on the home front and the battlefield. Sunday, October pm AMERICAN MUSIC GOES TO WAR - ALAN CASS, FOUNDER AND CURATOR OF CU S GLENN MILLER ARCHIVE In addition to playing big band music and discussing the role of popular culture during WWII, Alan Cass will explore the theories for what happened to Glenn Miller, the renowned band leader and captain in the Army Air Corp. Miller s single-engine plane went down over the English Channel on Dec. 15, Thursday, October pm JAMES A. MICHENER ARCHIVES TOUR AND DISCUSSION James A. Michener Library The James A. Michener collection at UNC documents the life and work of one of the 20th century s best-selling authors, perhaps most famous for his work Tales of the South Pacific. The UNC Archival Services Department will open the facility for tours and provide a detailed discussion of the archives. Saturday, October pm FAMILY GAMES WWII ERA Bring the family! Come play some games that were popular during the WWII Era. Saturday, October 27 2 pm CLASSIC MODEL AIRPLANE WORKSHOP A presentation about historical model airplanes and an interactive workshop demonstrating how to build a model plane. Various model airplanes will be displayed during the event to exhibit different building styles. Monday, October 29 7 pm WHAT S HAPPENING AT HOME Several local people will provide a program about what life was like at home during the war. Tuesday, October :30 pm PACIFIC LEGACY: IMAGES AND MEMORY FROM WWII IN THE PACIFIC JERRY MEEHL, PH.D. (ADULTS) Jerry Meehl is a senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research and has written (with Rex Allan Smith) two books on the history of the War. Pacific War Stories brings to life the realities of the war as remembered by veterans - what it was like, how it looked, felt, smelled and sounded. Saturday, November pm COLORADO SERVICE DOGS (ALL AGES) Learn how this organization trains dogs to assist veterans, and meet some of the canine heroes who help military heroes. Wednesday, November 7 7-8:30 pm THE WAR (AND POST WAR) IN THE PACIFIC - DR. THOMAS ZEILER, CU BOULDER (ADULTS) Thomas Zeiler, Professor of History and International Affairs, is the author of Unconditional Defeat: Japan, America, and the End of World War II. Zeiler describes the final 22 months of the Pacific War as a story of contrasts in which ultimately the Japanese had no options but unconditional surrender. Thursday, November pm COLORADO S WARTIME TRANSITIONS AND MIGRATIONS Erie Community Library, Meeting Room A discussion led by History Professor Todd Laugen about the efforts to mobilize for war, expansion of local military bases, industry munitions projects, German POWs, Japanese American internments, and the beginnings of Cold War defense contracting. Friday November pm HOMEFRONT HEROINES: THE WAVES OF WORLD WAR II (ADULTS, YOUNG ADULTS) Broomfield Library Auditorium The Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES) were vital to the United States efforts during World War II. In tribute to her mother, Kathleen Ryan of Longmont has interviewed WAVES and created a documentary. Kathleen will share behind-the-scenes stories about the making of the film. Co-sponsored by Westminster Public Library and The Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum. Event is free. Tickets available at participating libraries and at the door. Saturday, November pm A SWINGIN GOOD TIME WWII BALL Island Grove Regional Park, 4H Building Take a step back in time with an opening performance of Dancing in Combat Boots by local author Teresa Funke. Enjoy cocktails, big band music and a swing dance contest where you pick the winning dance team! Tickets available at your local library - $35 each or $60 per couple. See website for details FREEDOM SERVICE DOGS Many veterans return to Colorado with physical and mental disabilities, like Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. These memories will be put in a booklet and distributed Oct. 1 to Nov. 12. Learn about the exhibits and special collections of our area s own Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum.
