Vice President, Bob Nantois, called the meeting to order and did a fine job as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Secretary Drake Rice presided over the election of officers. The following positions were voted in by acclimation of the membership as the slate ran unopposed. Board Position President: Eric Dilbeck Treasurer: Charles Price Director of Museum Grounds and Facilities: Bob Cossairt Director of Mechanical Operations: Terry Birchett Director of Museum Activities: Greg Hall Director at Large: Larry Dodd Drake went on to present the revised bylaws to the membership for acceptance. The major changes to the bylaws include: the introduction of member classes and move membership levels to the membership policy document; change Board Member positions to Trustees; allowances for a variable number of trustees (minimum 9, maximum 13) and improvement of consistency throughout the document. President Eric Dilbeck presented a state of the museum address which covered the projects, acquisitions, and achievements the museum has made in the last year. As well as lay out what lies ahead for the museum in the coming year. 2 Page 2 The Dispatcher The Oklahoma Railway Museum s mission is to provide an educational experience of railroads and how they shaped Oklahoma and the Nation. The President s Column Opportunities for our museum are around every corner. Railroad artifacts, rolling stock, and engines seem to be increasingly coming available. All of these take considerable time and money to bring to our museum. To say it is a challenge to preserve all of these items is an understatement. Between the cost of transporting and the ability to not only find space, but to securely store these items, hard choices have to be made. Saving pieces from rot or scrapping and preserving them for the future supports our mission. Therefore, we need to be prepared for these opportunities: we need a capital campaign. We generate income with our train rides (regular and special) and parking cars for the college softball world series. But to be able to support acquisitions and our museum s expansion, we need to start fundraising. One of the recommendations from The Oklahoma Groups report (click here to watch the presentation), was to establish a donor recruitment and retention program. This year we need to work towards this goal aggressively. As part of this program, we will need to find ways to identify donors and create a connection to our museum. When I talk with people about our museum, most have a connection to railroads. It is very common to hear that a parent, grandparent, or another family member worked for a railroad. This can help us create that connection and create a new member and volunteer, or even a donor. Recruiting donors is just the start. Donors need to know what we are working on and the opportunities before us. They need to know how their gift will make a difference in our organization and how it will make an impact on our visitors. Talking with donors on a regular basis is critical to ensure they stay engaged with our museum. It will be the responsibility of our board trustees and members to ensure we are good stewards to our donors. Oklahoma Railway Museum, Ltd. (405) Officers: Eric Dilbeck, President Bob Nantois, Vice President Drake Rice, Secretary Charles Price, Treasurer Trustees: Terry Birchett Bob Cook Bob Cossairt Larry Dodd Greg Hall Bob Hussey Craig Larson Departments: Interim Train Show Chair David Eads Membership Chair Amanda Resnick Interim Dispatcher Editor Eric Dilbeck Dispatcher Editors Sharin Wolfe Hayley Enoch Over the next few months, we will start creating a 5-year plan for our museum. This plan will be critical for recruiting donors. During this time, I challenge each of you to identify potential donors. With a plan and prospects, we can start a capital fundraising campaign that will allow us to build the next phase of the Oklahoma Railway Museum. See You On The Rails! Renew Your Membership! It is that time again, when your annual membership is due. Be sure to renew yours today, memberships not paid after March 1st are considered delinquent. 3 The Dispatcher Current Projects By Eric Dilbeck We currently have several projects in progress at the museum. Arrange time on a Saturday to come out and help. Santa Fe 643 Steam Engine (outside on the track) The sunshades and rear curtains need to be worked on. Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad Caboose (outside on the platform) Work continues replacing the outside siding. Missouri Kansas Texas Railroad Inspection Car (in the shop building) This project is near completion. The engine compartment needs a coat of paint. Outside, lights and reflectors will need to be reinstalled. Seats for the car have been recovered and are installed. Yard Office The siding needs to be repaired and painted. Around the Grounds There are plenty of projects and tasks at the museum. See Amanda, our new Volunteer Coordinator, about available projects and volunteer opportunities. Education Update By Steve Kamm We continue to make progress in cleaning up and adding displays to the baggage room in the Oakwood Station. Another G-scale model has been added to the display case situated under the Track Tools Display. This time, it s an AT&SF Caboose that closely matches our full-scale Santa Fe caboose. Also, look for the two new signs we installed: a recently discovered full-size Look Out For Cars sign, and a Caboose Smoke Jack description. The four vertical display cases on the north wall of the baggage room are being reconditioned. Very soon, one of them will feature a new photographic display, Women and Railroads. Two dozen photographs will illustrate the various ways in which female employees have served railroads across the USA during the past century. You may have noticed a piston and cylinder have been added to the Alco engine block located outside the perimeter fence. A descriptive sign is on order and will soon be installed. In our ongoing effort to bring the Museum into compliance with ADA requirements, Harry Curie and crew have raised the bricks to provide smooth access into the baggage room. A similar wooden ramp has been installed at the door to the yard office, along with yellow-painted warning stripes. Finally, materials to add wheelchair tie-down points in our C&NW combine car are being obtained. These relatively small projects improve our ability to inform and educate ORM visitors. Page 3 Crosstie Donations Friends and families of ORM can make donations to the museum for crossties, equipment and facilities. A donation of $50.00 will help ORM purchase a new crosstie. You may donate a crosstie in recognition or in memory of someone. Donations can be mailed to the museum at the address below or made online on our website, oklahomarailwaymuseum. org. Notate Crosstie with your donation, and send to : ORM Ltd NE Grand Boulevard Oklahoma City, Depot Store The Oklahoma Railway Museum has items available for both children and adults at the Depot Store. These include baseball caps, polo shirts, t shirts, lapel pins, coasters, and now mugs. Profits from the sale of these items support the museum and its projects. The Depot Store is located inside the Oakwood Depot on the museum grounds. It is open on run days (the first and third Saturdays April through August) from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The store is also open during special events. Visit the Oklahoma Railway Museum on YouTube youtube.com/c/oklahomarailwaymuseumorg

Page 4 The Dispatcher Museum Update By Drake Rice Work continues in the shop on various projects and also addressing storage of items used for the different events. Amanda has been working to organize the items, shelving has been set up to allow for better access to the items and better storage. She has been assisted by a number of volunteers. On the shop floor, volunteers have been finishing the exterior lights on the MKT inspection car and working on the generator that powers the car. On the other side of the shop, the mechanical crew is working on the brakes of Magma #3: the RS3 that, in the near future, will be returning to Arizona State Railroad Museum in Williams, AZ. After many months, the Le Flore Depot has (finally) arrived at the museum and work is underway to prepare its foundation. It will take a lot of work and money to get it in shape for use. The plan is to put the gift shop in one area, have the museum office in another and to use the baggage room for an archival library for books and magazines the museum receives as donations. North of the barn, a new coal bin has been set up for the spring steam run. This location should not interfere with other museum activities. Volunteers spent a Saturday getting the area ready. The coal was delivered making us ready for our spring steam event. The cold weather also caused some exposed water pipe in the barn to crack and resulted in a leak. We shut the water off, but the pipe will need to be repaired prior to water service being restored to the barn. If you have plumbing skills, please head to the museum and use your talent to make the repairs. Work is progressing on the replacement of the signals at our crossing at NE 36st street. ODOT has us on their agenda in February as one of many signal upgrades around in the state. ORM s responsibility will be running power to the signals as an addition to the batteries already in place. The two power sources make the signals compliant with FRA regulations. This will cost the museum very little since most of the expense will be covered by ODOT (10% state and 90% federal) and donations by C.D.L. Electric, Incorporated out of Pittsburg, KS. Another big project is the replacement of the 30th street crossing. The ties on our track under 30th street will need to be replaced due to deterioration. The estimated cost will be approximately $60,000. This work is required to keep the rail line open. The project will be covered by museum funds and was presented at the December board meeting. The project will be performed during March prior to the 2018 operating season. The cold weather has allowed some minor inside projects to be address around the museum. This includes servicing the mowing equipment in preparation for the upcoming mowing season. When the spring brings rain, the museum will be ready to address the grass and weeds. As always, your help is always appreciated at your museum. Engraved Platform Bricks Cost is $50.00 per brick. A maximum of 3 lines with 18 letters and spaces per line. To avoid confusion, please print characters in capital letters. Mail completed forms with check or money order to: Purchaser s Name Phone No. Oklahoma Railway Museum 3400 NE Grand Boulevard Oklahoma City OK 73111

The Dispatcher Ramblin Rails By Larry Dodd Bill Strong Page 5 Rarely does an individual have the opportunity to meet someone who has a direct connection with history. Fortunately, this happened to me. I met Bill Strong while on a Jeep trip following some of the old railroad right-of-way and toll roads in the San Juan Mountains of eastern Colorado. Bill and I happen to belong to the Family Motor Coach Association and their chapter of the FMCA 4 Wheelers. At our happy hour after one excursion into the mountains, I learned that he had some history with the Santa Fe Railway. It turns out William K. Bill Strong is the great grandson of William Barstow Strong, a Past-President of the Santa Fe Railway. From Bill Strong s article in The Golden Spike Newsletter In December 1877 (at age 40) he became the General Manager and Vice President of the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. With its eastern terminus on the Missouri River and its western in Pueblo CO, it was only 786 miles long. He managed the Santa Fe s winning efforts against the Denver & Rio Grande RR to gain the exclusive use of Raton Pass on which the Santa Fe entered New Mexico from Trinidad CO. He also managed the Santa Fe s many activities during the subsequent three year Royal Gorge War. It was concluded by the Treaty of Boston with the Denver & Rio Grande by which the Santa Fe received $1,800,000 for the track it built through and beyond the gorge and exclusive right to serve Santa Fe NM for 10 years, but giving up to the D&RG the right to build into Leadville for its high revenues in hauling ore out and mining supplies and people in. The Santa Fe built south into New Mexico and west across northern Arizona through Holbrook, Flagstaff and Kingman to Needles AZ. WBS became the president of the Santa Fe on August 1, 1881 as new tracks were being laid across Arizona. To reach the lucrative markets in California from then barren Arizona, in 1884 the Santa Fe traded to the Southern Pacific RR its Guymas Mexico line (completed in October 1882) for the SP s track from Needles AZ to Mojave CA with trackage rights on to San Francisco. Transfer of ownership of the Needles Mojave line was delayed until The SP had a division point on the line named Waterman Junction on the dry Mojave River. Its name quickly was changed to Barstow in honor of WBS. That exchange, and other related steps taken by WBS almost single-handedly broke C. P. Huntington s and Southern Pacific s monopoly in California railroading, a feat no other railroad had been able to accomplish before. The Santa Fe under his leadership was first railroad to serve San Diego and its fine port. WBS opened up more new California markets for the Santa Fe. It was WBS who through his own vision and force of will extended the Santa Fe to Chicago to access Chicago markets and to connect with the important eastern carriers. This is what made Santa Fe, a truly trans-continental railroad, something no other railroad was able to do until the mega mergers of the mid-1990s, over 100 years after his reign. When WBS left the Santa Fe in the summer of 1889 it owned or leased nearly 7000 miles of track, almost 10 times the length of its track when he joined it 12 years earlier. 6 Page 6 The Dispatcher Annual Meeting Continued from page 1 Projects Many projects were completed this year including Steve Kamm s work on multiple displays in the Oakwood Depot, in addition to the track components and wheel set displays. Bill Wright and Larry Clemons completed an incredible restoration of the adjustable baggage cart. The restoration on the MKT Inspection car is over 90% complete. Both the CB&Q caboose and the birthday caboose require re-siding on one side. Acquisitions The 100 foot 1920 Frisco turntable was delivered in April from the Stillwater Central Yard on High Street. ORM is working on engineering for the pit to get the turntable operational. It will be the focal point of the museum expansion. In 2017 the Baldwin VO-1000 US Army #4648 originally Frisco #201 was delivered and an EMD SW-1200 US Army #4649 originally Milwaukee Road #615 is expected to be delivered in the second quarter of Thanks to a lead from Steve Kamm, a Wilson Car Lines reefer #2209 was donated and delivered to Owanda siding. The 1908 Frisco depot from Le Flore will be arriving soon. It will be refurbished to become the temporary entrance building at the north end by the new parking lot. Thanks to a donation, ORM acquired the Rock Island #760 railway post office car. A major de-acquisition from our collection is the sale of the RS3 Magma #3 engine to the Arizona Railroad Museum. ORM will receive $30,000 and car parts as part of the deal. The engine will return to Arizona where it originally operated. Achievements 2017 was a great year for the Oklahoma Railway Museum. We transported a record 26,981 passengers. Softball parking raised $52,814 up from last year s $42,271. The Christmas train brought in $82,437 up from $37,000 in The Fall Steam Train event earned the museum $20, 949 and the Halloween train revenue increased to $13,829 up from $8,420. The 2016 Day Out with Thomas festival was the 5th best (of the 13 years we have held the event). And finally, scheduled group tours more than doubled to 36 in Starting with the adoption of our new mission statement much progress was made on our road map for the museum s expansion developed in 2016 with the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits in a series of planning meetings. These short term goals include partnerships, facility planning, fundraising, development, and strengthening our board. The museum was very active in community outreach and partnership opportunities in ORM volunteers and staff participated in outreach events in almost every month of the year. We have begun a partnership with the Girl Scouts to develop a merit badge program and had several articles published in Trains Magazine, National Railway Historical Society, Railfan & Railroad, and Heritage Rail Alliance. Comfort Incorporated became a sponsor providing labor, parts and equipment to maintain the heating and air-conditioning on the passenger fleet. The Oklahoma Group developed a three prong proposal for ORM, outlining strategies for a capital campaign, donor recruitment and retention, and volunteer outreach and appreciation. We implemented their most important recommendation to hire a Volunteer Coordinator: Amanda Resnick came on board in September filling this position. Continued on page 7 Amanda Resnick presents Anne Chilton with a certificate of appreciation. President Eric Dilbeck give the state of the museum presentation.

The Dispatcher Page 7 Annual Meeting Continued form page was a good year for our fundraising efforts. The end of the year donations have raised $1728 bringing our total for the year to $30, including the $9,500 donation for the Rock Island RPO car. Our endowment with the Oklahoma City Community Foundation sits at $107, Facility planning for the expansion project has moved forward. An Expansion Committee was formed and member John Buckley s architectural firm, ARC Architecture, has come up with a draft of the master plan for the expansion. The turntable center point has been located and phase one of the track plan is being finalized to create additional storage and connect the yard to the turntable. What s Ahead This year we will continue planning for the expansion project. We will develop a 5 year strategic plan and develop a capital campaign. Work continues on policy development, setting new membership and donation levels, as well as establishing a volunteer handbook and training documents. Awards The meeting concluded with awards. Debbie Dunn, Dmitry Ofitserov, Larry Clemons and Anne Chilton were recognized with certificates of appreciation for their service, commitment and contributions to the museum. Several other members were honored with plaques: Mary Holderbaum for 15 years of service and all her work in the ORM Gift Shop, Tom Harrison for going above and beyond on the restoration of the MKT Inspection car, Steve Kamm for 4 years of service and tireless efforts as Education Chair and his work on improving our displays. Last but not least, Ed Birch Jr. for outstanding and dedicated service to the Oklahoma City Train Show. Anne Chilton presents Mary Holderbaum with a plaque for her service in the ORM gift shop. Letter to the Editor Hello Mr. Dilbeck, I enjoyed reading the Dispatcher, as usual. The Museum has grown so much since Terry first started volunteering there. He tells me all about what he does, and I surely enjoy hearing about it. He has sent many phone pictures of him at work at ORM, and sometimes, when he is aboard an engine, he calls me and blows the whistle and I can hear that on my cell phone! I am very hearing impaired and hearing that train blowing surely brings back memories. Keep up the good work! So many people are enjoying everything that is done at ORM. Georgene Birchett Ramblin Rails Continued from page 5 William K. Bill Strong is a kind and very gracious individual. He provided me with links to a significant amount of research on WBS as he is called. Bill did let me know that Thomas Hoback, President of the Indiana Railroad Company is currently writing an autobiography of WBS, no date on publication that I have been able to determine. It should be great reading for any AT&SF fan. Bill also has penned a book regarding Otto Mears and the gold and silver passes which he distributed to various individuals. Bill graciously provided me with an autographed copy of his book which will ultimately arrive in the ORM library. Bill has the silver pass given to William Barstow Strong by Otto Mears. Also on loan to me from the Strong Library is an interesting book about Otto Mears who built his railroad in the San Juan Mountains, where my friendship with Bill began. Interesting how it came full circle so quickly.

The Dispatcher Page 9 Trip Report Wales 2017 By Steve Kamm Some of you may recall that in September of 2016, I traveled to southern Africa on a trip organized by LGB Rail Tours. With the success of that journey in mind, I decided to use the same company and tour guide for a trip in August (2017) to Wales. The intent of the tour was to ride behind many of the country s mostly narrow gauge restored steam locomotives. Once again, the trip was enjoyable, amazing, and hugely successful. Wales is part of the United Kingdom, lying between England to the east and the Irish Sea to the west. It covers about 8,000 square miles and has a population of 2.9 million. Wales is renowned for its unique culture, history, legends, scenic countryside, and rugged terrain. In bygone years, Wales gained fame for the production of coal in the south and slate in the north. Many short rail lines were constructed to transport these commodities from the mountains to the coasts for shipping. As these industries declined, the rail lines were abandoned. Now, however, steam enthusiasts have restored at least a dozen railroads along with their locomotives, coaches, and associated equipment. Some lines feature vast maintenance facilities, capable of turning drive wheels, while other lines have just a few simple sheds. We got to see it all! Our group of 42 travelers was composed of train nuts from Germany, Switzerland, Canada and the United States. The tour began in the city of Cardiff in southern Wales. Over the next ten days, we made our way north, stopping for a few nights in the mid-wales university city of Aberyswyth, and then on to Betys-y-Coed, a picturesque village in the mountains of Snowdonia National Park. As I had spent a year-long teaching exchange in northern Wales, I enjoyed a coming home feeling, experiencing once again the scenery, people, language, food, and beer! The steam locomotives we rode behind varied in size from tiny smaller than our OGE switcher to the famous Fairlie double-ended machine to a huge Garratt. Some of the lines ran parallel to the seacoast, some traveled along lakeshores, some went through hills populated by sheep, and some climbed into the mountains. In fact, we even took the the only operating rack and pinion system in the British Isles, the Snowdon Mountain Railway from sea-level to the top of Mount Snowdon at 3560 feet. The trip up the mountain took an hour. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived the clouds had settled in: We were deprived of the scenic views! In addition to the train rides, our tour included visits to cultural and railway museums, medieval castles, manor homes, and formal gardens. On our last full day, we were treated to a trip on the Great Orme cable-hauled tramway followed by a visit to Conwy Castle, built to subdue the unruly Welch by Edward I in about My trip home, from Manchester to Atlanta to OKC was uneventful, and I arrived tired but very happy for the wonderful experiences.
