As usual, we have worked hard to establish the best possible transportation program for our students and are confident that the times, location of stops, etc., listed in this brochure will accommodate the transportation needs for our District. We ask for your patience and cooperation, as we realize it takes a few days or, in some cases, weeks to work out the "bugs". The time schedule is as follows: Kindergarten Grades 1-4 Grades 5-8 Grades 9-12 Bus Arrival 8:50, 12:45 8:50 7:50 7:15 School Starts 8:55, 12:50 8:55 8:00 7:25 School Ends 11:15, 3:10 3:10 2:35 2:02 Bus Departure 11:20, 3:15 3:15 2:40 2:08 We ask for your support in reviewing this schedule. It is especially important that the responsibilities and the privileges of riding the bus be reinforced with your children as it is our desire to have the new year begin on a positive note. This schedule contains a listing of the responsibilities that must be accepted and followed in order to provide for the safety of all the students. It should be noted, these procedures will be reviewed in school during the first few days and as necessary thereafter. In addition, in accordance with Suffolk County Department of Health Regulation, smoking by any person in a school building, on school property, and/or on school buses is prohibited. Violations of this policy are punishable by a fine by the Suffolk County Department of Health up to $ for each and every offense. The schools will fully implement this regulation in order to insure a safe, healthy and smoke-free campus. In case school has to be closed for any emergency situation (i.e. weather) the announcements will be made on the following radio stations: WALK - FM 97.5 and WBLI - FM If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child's building principal or First Student Bus Company (formerly Laidlaw Transit). 4 MOUNT SINAI UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT SCHOOL BUS RULES & REGULATIONS The Mount Sinai School District is proud of its bus safety record. It must be remembered, however, that bus safety is greatly dependent upon the behavior of the students riding the bus. Safety on the school bus is not solely the responsibility of the school administrator and the bus driver. Safety is a matter of teamwork and requires the constant support and attention of the students and the parents as well as the personnel of the schools. Our purpose is to clarify for the parent and the student their responsibility in contributing to the safety of our school transportation program. PARENT RESPONSIBILITY Parents should study the transportation regulations with their children. At the same time, the importance of observing these regulations should be stressed to the student not only for his/her own safety but to protect the lives of all students riding the school bus. 1. Parents are responsible for the actions and safety of students walking to and from bus stops. 2. Parents are responsible for the actions of the students at the bus stops. The school district assumes responsibility for students only after they have boarded the school bus. 3. Any parental concerns in relation to the school bus, driver or student problems must be directed to school officials for action. Parents are NOT PERMITTED on board a school bus while the bus is actively engaged in transporting students. 4. Parents should help the driver maintain his/her schedule by making sure that students are ready on time. Students should be at their designated bus stop at least 5 minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up time. The driver is not expected to wait for students. For safety reasons, PLEASE do not send a student who is late running after his/her school bus. 5. The driver will not stop at places other than designated bus stops. All bus stops must be authorized by a school official. Students should wait at the stop nearest their house. 6. Our buses are equipped with seatbelts but it is not a State mandated requirement on school buses. However, the district encourages parents to exercise their responsibility in fostering the use of seatbelts. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY The student's responsibilities to the bus driver and fellow students are very important. A responsible student will: 1. Be on time at your designated school bus stop. Stay on the side of the road, away from traffic, while waiting for your bus. Conduct yourself in a safe manner while waiting. 2. Respect the property rights of others, especially if the bus stop is in front of someone's house. 3. Wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before attempting to enter. 4. Keep head and hands inside the bus at all times. 5. Loud talking or unnecessary confusion could cause a disruption and divert the driver's attention and may contribute to a serious accident. 6. Treat bus equipment with respect. Damage to the seats, etc., must be paid for by the offender. Never tamper with the bus or any of its equipment. 7. No objects larger than that which can be held on the student's lap are permitted i.e. cello, tuba etc. No objects made of glass or sharp metals are allowed. 8. Keep books, packages, instruments and all other objects out of the aisles. All books and papers must be kept in a school bag, backpack or carryall. All exits and aisle must be kept clear. 9. Riders are not permitted to stand, kneel on seats or leave their seats while the bus is in motion. 10. Students are expected to be courteous to their driver and fellow students. 11. Students should cross the street 10 feet in front of the bus. When crossing the street, students should advance to a point where they are able to see the driver's face and wait for a signal from the driver to finish crossing the street. Students must not walk along the sides of the bus. Students should not cross behind the bus. 12. No smoking, use of drugs or alcohol is permitted on the bus. 13. In case of an emergency, follow the directions of the driver. 14. Obey the driver's instructions at all times. 15. Do not throw anything out of the bus windows. Horse play is not permitted around or on the school bus. 16. No open packages of food or drink are allowed on any bus. If, during a field trip, food is consumed, it is the responsibility of the class(es) to make sure that the bus is left clean. 17. No transportation of any live classroom pets or projects will be allowed on district buses. BUS SUSPENSION POLICY These are the policies and procedures for bus suspension in effect in our District. It is important that every parent be aware that: 1. School administrators will enforce these procedures, as directed by the Board of Education. 4

5 2. Even though students are suspended from riding the bus, they are expected to be in school. 3. Parents have the responsibility for teaching self-control and good manners to their children, while the school has the responsibility of educating and transporting. If students cannot control their behavior on a school bus and continuously disrupt the safety and order thebus and fellow students, they will lose their riding privilege. PROCEDURES The administrator in charge will take into consideration the age of the offender and the severity of the situation. In regard to all reports, each will be determined on its merit and will be investigated: 1st Report: 2nd Report: 3rd Report: NOTE: The bus driver will report all incidents in writing on the official District form. Names and a description of the violation are given on this report form which is turned in to the building principal. The building principal sends home the first "warning" letter. The parent is expected to discuss this report with the child. Should a second incident occur with the same student, the driver will forward a written report to the principal. The principal will send a second notice to the parents and other parties. This letter may indicate a bus riding suspension. After a third incident occurs with the same child, the driver will forward an official report to the principal. A third letter will be sent to the parent indicating dates of suspension from bus riding. A serious infraction of the rules may result in immediate suspension, with no warning letter sent if, in the opinion of school officials, an immediate suspension is necessary to insure the safety of the student and all students. GENERAL INFORMATION Students will sometimes bring a note asking to ride another bus. Any request should be cleared with the student's principal and the transportation coordinator due to the fact that some buses may exceed capacity loads if extra students ride on them. Any parent wishing to pick up their child from school is advised to do so prior to dismissal time by filling out the required release form. All school bus drivers have been instructed not to release any student once they have boarded their bus. PLEASE NOTE: PARENTS WHO INTEND TO SEND THEIR CHILD ON THE BUS TO A BABYSITTER RESIDING IN THE DISTRICT ARE REQUESTED TO NOTIFY, IN ADVANCE AND IN WRITING, THE SCHOOL OFFICE, THE CHILD'S TEACHER AND THE TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR IN CONCLUSION Bus routes are established primarily on the basis of safety by First Student Bus Company. Time and convenience are also considerations. Whenever possible, main highways and dangerous intersections are avoided. The complexities of our transportation program do not allow for door-to-door pickups or a stop at every corner. Bus stops are located for the convenience of the majority of students. Requests for bus stops are thoroughly investigated before a decision is reached. All drivers have rosters listing the students who ride their bus. If your child is not listed on the driver's roster, he/she will not be permitted to ride that bus. If you are unsure as to which bus your child should be riding or if you have any questions, please call Mrs. Linda Jensen, Assistant Superintendent for Business, at ***PLEASE NOTE: All letter buses (A-T, GRADES 1-12) are for both ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL even though only the am start time is listed. ***EXCEPTION: AM Kindergarten comes in on a letter bus and goes home on a number bus.
