Drama Notebook Script The Mitten An Ukrainian Folktale Adaptation by Janea Dahl Cast Narrator One Narrator Two Lucas, a little boy Mema, his grandmother A Sparrow A Hedgehog Two Moles A Crow Two Rabbits A Snowy Owl Two Badgers A Raccoon Two Foxes A Wild Boar A Brown Bear A Field Mouse Settings-A little house on the edge of a village. A field covered in snow. Narrator One: Once upon a time, a little boy named Lucas lived in a small village in a country called Ukraine. In the winter, everything was covered with soft blankets of white snow. Narrator Two: Lucas loved the snow, but his old brown gloves were wearing thin. He wanted a new pair of mittens, he went to his grandma, who he called Mema. Lucas: Mema, will you make me a pair of mittens as white as the snow? Mema: What if you lose it in the snow? You ll never be able to find it? Lucas: Oh Mema, I promise to be very careful.

Narrator One: So, Mema set to work making Lucas a soft white pair of snow-white mittens. When she was all done, she called Lucas to her side. Mema: Now, Lucas, I want you to have fun playing in the snow, but when you come home, I will check to see that you still have your mittens. Narrator Two: Lucas was very happy to have his new mittens. He ran over the hill and through the trees, but soon, one of his mittens fell upon the snow and was lost. Narrator One: Soon after, a sparrow came hopping by, looking for seeds. Sparrow: I m so cold, and this mitten looks comfy! Narrator Two: The little sparrow hopped inside. Narrator One: Just then, a hedgehog came waddling along. Hedgehogs look like they are covered in fur, but they are actually covered with quills. Hedgehog: This mitten looks like it would keep my belly warm. Narrator Two: He started to nudge his way inside. Sparrow: Hey, I was already here. This mitten isn t big enough for both of us! Hedgehog: Sure it is. We re both small enough to share. Narrator One: So they shared. But soon, a couple of little moles came burrowing through the snow. Narrator Two: The first mole s snout bumped up against the mitten. Mole One: Hey, what s this? Narrator One: The second mole popped up out of the snow. Mole Two: Looks like a mitten to me. Mole One: We all know you can t see anything anymore than I can. Mole Two: Well, it certainly smells like one! Narrator Two: And with that, they snuggled inside. Narrator One: Next, a big black crow came along. Crow: Cool. A mitten.

Narrator Two: Crows don t usually ask for permission, and this one was no different. He elbowed his way in without even asking. Narrator One: It just so happened that two rabbits were chasing each other when they spied the mitten. Rabbit One: Let s take a break and warm up in that mitten! Rabbit Two: That s a great idea! Narrator Two: But the crow didn t like that idea one bit. Crow: It s too crowded in here. Go find your own mitten. Rabbit One: We can fit, you ll see! Rabbit Two: It will be fun! Narrator One: The crow was very annoyed as the rabbits nestled in beside him. Narrator Two: A snowy owl circled above the mitten, and all of the animals inside got very quiet. Snowy owls can eat sparrow, hedgehogs, moles, crows, and even rabbits. Narrator One: Everyone was quiet as the golden-eyed owl climbed inside. Narrator Two: Along came two badgers, arguing. Badger One: I told you we should have asked for directions. Badger Two: We re not lost. I know where we are going. Badger One: Right. Just like the time we went to Farthing Wood. Badger Two: Look, a mitten! Badger One: Let s take a nap. We re supposed to be asleep right now anyway. Narrator One: The other animals didn t object, because badgers are really cute, but not when they are in a bad mood. Narrator Two: Just then, a raccoon came along. He had actually been spying on the badgers, hoping that they would lead to him food. Narrator One: He obviously hadn t been able to hear their conversation. Raccoon: I might as well stop here for a while and get warm in this mitten.

All of the animals: NO! There s no more room! Raccoon: Sure there is! Narrator One: So the raccoon climbed inside. But soon, along came a fox. Fox: Hm. A mitten. Just the right place to warm up my tail. All of the animals: Go away! Find your own mitten. It s too small in here! Fox: I ll only stay for a minute! Narrator Two: Foxes like to lie. Narrator One: The animals heard a crunching and snorting sound. Wild Boar: I smell something. Narrator Two: He sniffed and snorted his way around the mitten, and burrowed his way inside, while all of the animals grumbled! Narrator One: The snow came down even harder. The animals snuggled in together, their breath making steam rise up in the air. For a while, it was quiet, and all of the animals were just about asleep, when a big brown bear came lumbering by. Brown Bear: What s this? A warm and cozy mitten. I should settle down for my long winter nap. All of the animals: Nooooo! You re too big. There s no way you will fit in here. Brown Bear: Sure I can. I ll just squeeze in, right here, in the middle. Narrator One: Paws were squished, tails were stepped on, ears flattened, as the animals groaned and the bear made his way inside. Narrator Two: The mitten was stretched and pulled, and poked out in all directions. Narrator One: Finally, when everyone was tucked inside, a tiny field mouse skipped along in the tracks that the other animals had made. Field Mouse: What have we here? A soft, warm mitten! All of the animals: Noooo! Noooo! There s no more room! Field Mouse: Nonsense, I m just a tiny mouse. No bigger than a speck.

Narrator Two: The tiny mouse scurried back and forth looking for an opening. His little whiskers brushed up against the noses of each of the animals, until All of the animals: Aaaaaaachoooo! Narrator One: When all of the animals sneezed at once, it sent the mitten soaring into the air, and all of the animals ran off in different directions. Narrator Two: It just so happened, that Lucas was just over the hill, he d come back to search for his mitten. Lucas: My mitten, my mitten! Narrator One: Lucas picked up the stretched out mitten and ran into the house. Mema: Good boy, Lucas. You still have both of your mittens. Lucas: I sure do! Mema: But what happened to this one?
