1 NUTS & BOLTS Santa Cruz Valley Car Nuts, Inc. February 2018 FROM THE EDITOR The car show is over and everyone is trying to get back to a normal routine. The club brought in a lot of money for our scholarship students. Scholarships will be awarded at the end of the year. The lucky students will come to our April general meeting so all the carnuts can meet them and learn what college they will be attending. The club is planning driving events over the next few months. The club will be going to visit the Border Patrol in February and lunch afterwards at the Cow Palace. They will be driving to Tucson for the last day show at Little Anthony s on March 31. A big thanks to all the volunteers that worked at the car show. 24th Annual Car Show in the Books Congratulations to the club on another successful car show! Preliminarily it looks like our spectator numbers were up by about 1000 over last year. This is supported by our gate receipts that were $5,000 higher than last year. Our sales at the sales table were higher as well. The people working the table reported that we were close to running out of shirts, we did run out of posters. The 50/50 raffles brought in more money as well. Over all the show was a great success. The credit for our great show goes to the club volunteers who stepped up. We had an unexpected tragedy when Randy Estes suddenly died from complications of cancer. We will truly miss him. We dedicated the BBQ and show to Randy and his family. Randy left a big hole which his friend and neighbor, Jon Hepner did his best to fill. Jon did a great job and the show traffic including spectators flowed very well. Linda Gorg took over registrations this year and all the registration people did a great job. Rich Marsula stepped in to oversee the ballot counting along with his other duty of handling the show trailer. Linda Darris came through on the sales table when Arthur Mournian unexpectedly had to go to his sister-in-law s funeral. Linda and the other volunteers did a great job and we had record sales of our items. John Beckman and Jay Lucas did a fabulous job selling the 50/50 tickets on both Friday night and Saturday. The winner for the early raffle on Saturday took home over $1,000. The set up and tear down went well with Gary Ballew and Rich Marsula looking after things. Once again Lila and Andy Szedlus worked with the student volunteers who helped with the entry gates and the show car parking. Thanks for your hard work Lila & Andy. Carol Shelton worked hard to get items and arrange them for the raffle and auction on Friday night. Thanks you carol. There were many more volunteers involved both in the BBQ and the show. Thank you to everyone. You can be proud of the job you did and know that your efforts contributed to our ability to award scholarships to Sahuarita and Waldon Grove HS this year. 2 PAGE 2 NUTS & BOLTS FEBRUARY 2018 Minutes of General and Board Meetings General Meeting January 2018 The meeting was held at the Cow Palace with 70 attendees. At 8:05 a.m. President John Murray called the meeting to order. President Murray discussed the tour to the Border Patrol Facility in Nogales, AZ. A requirement to participate requires a Background Check. A form was passed to complete the information for the Background Check. Visitors/New Members: Wendy Buitenhuis, new member, won Best of Show with her 1931 Studebaker. She has had it since the 80 s but at one point sold it and later bought it back. She also has a 1964 split window Chevy. Frank Diebold with a 1925 Model T and a 1955 Ford joined the club today. Treasurer s Report: Treasurer Arthur Mournian gave the Treasurer s report. He has preliminary figures for the car show and final figures will be forthcoming. Any questions, contact Arthur Mournian. Welfare: It was mentioned that Paul Johnston is experiencing health issues. Car Nuts Car Show: John Johnston stated that many spectators would like bottled water at our next show. The resort sells it, but their tent is a long walk. Members winning trophies are Barbara Cottos (1969 Shelby GT500), Sam Giordano (Buick Skylark), John Beckman (1964 Chev Impala), and Don Singleton with his Bugatti. There will be a Car Show Wrap Up meeting on 2/12/18 at 10:00 a.m. at Carol Shelton s house. Other Car Shows: Frank Pella, President of the Classic Chevy Club of Tucson, invited our members to participate in their Chevy Showdown show to be held at Desert Diamond Casino. It is open to all pre GM vehicles. The time is 9:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m. Their flyer was passed to members. Spectators are encouraged. Del Hammond stated that American Legion Post 66 will hold their car show mid-april. With more information later. Jay Lucas announced the Quail Creek Car Show to be held on (a Sunday). This will be held to benefit Hands of a Friend. More details will be announced at a later date. Bereavement: Carol Shelton stated that in lieu of flowers, Rose Estes would like members to consider donating funds in memory of Randy for scholarships. She also announced that former member and past Treasurer, Clarence Butch Wittman had passed and suggested that funds in his name could also be donated to our scholarships. Member Comments: John Johnston said that Nancy Koester (a friend of John and Ann Johnston and Carol Shelton) attended the BBQ as a guest of Carol Shelton. She won the 50/50. The entire pot was over $1,100 and she donated her half back to the club. John Johnston suggested that we dedicate a scholarship in her name. President Murray asked Phillip von Micka-Reichenberg to provide a short talk. He did give a talk and the moral of the story is: You don t always get what you pay for. The 50/50 total was $68.00 and the lucky lady was not identified. At 8:50 a.m. the meeting was adjourned. Next General Meeting February 5, 2018 Breakfast - 7:30am Meeting - 8am Cow Palace Board Meeting January 2018 The meeting was called to order by President John Murray at 8:55 a.m. with Board Members Arthur Mournian, Rich Marsula, Dan McGuire, Lila Szedlus. Jay Lucas and Carol Shelton in attendance. Members Maryann Miller and Linda Gorg were also in attendance. All minutes of the last meeting and the Treasurer s Report were approved. Maryann Miller stated to the Board that her internet provider (Cox) is disallowing group e- mails unless she purchases a business account. That prevents her from sending s to the entire club as she has done in the past and also disallows her from ing the newsletter. She can continue to write the newsletter and post it on Carnuts.org. Member Linda Gorg volunteer to explore options, obtained the current list and will work with Maryann to solve this situation. NEW SLATE OF OF- FICERS There was a discussion about the Board s responsibility to provide a slate of candidates to serve for the next term. Our bylaws require the Board to present a slate of potential officers to the membership one month prior to election. Voting will take place at the next General Membership Meeting. The elected Board meets following the General Membership Meeting to fill the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. A slate of candidates will be provided to membership before the March 5 th General Membership Meeting with a vote of members at the April 2 nd Meeting. CAR SHOW: New Business: Rich Marsula stated that the speakers used at the car show need to be replaced. We had speakers that were not functional. 11 PAGE 11 NUTS & BOLTS FEBRUARY 2018 Friday nite bbq Friday night January 26 th was another beautiful southern Arizona evening. Once again the room was filled with BBQ participants. Before dinner the announcement was made that the evening and the upcoming car show were dedicated to the memory or Randy Estes. Randy passed away unexpectedly the week before the show. Several members of Randy s family joined us for the BBQ. There was a cash bar and happy hour from 5-6PM and then the food was ready and good food it was as usual. After dinner the baskets and auction items that Carol Shelton and her girls made up were sold. One of the highlight items auctioned was the original Roberta Rogers watercolor. The winner Ed Bigby, paid a record $650 for the painting. Thanks Ed. Enjoy the painting. Throughout the evening John Beckman and Jay Lucas sold 50/50 raffle tickets. When the winning ticket was drawn the winner s share was over $500 which Nancy graciously donated back to the club. All the basket items were awarded to winning ticket holders and when the results were tabulated for the evening, more than $4,000 was raised for charity. What a great kick off to the car show weekend. If you missed it, be sure to come to the next one.
