A s the indefatigable time ticktocks along, we get rolled over into another year, although it remains to be seen how new it turns out to be & whether it brings forth the happy days that are being trumpeted about for a while now. One would however eagerly be looking forward to regain the economic freedom which was put at stake in the altar of the crusade against black money, terrorism & corruption, all rolled into one. But probably we are mostly eager to savour the classic Robin Hood dream of snatching from the filthy rich to dole it out to the ragtag poor, with of course the dreamer being foremost to receive the share of the bounty. And if that doesn t sound good enough, we have the carrot of plastic cash which is being dangled now in front of a populace, roughly one-fourth of whom live below the poverty line & almost a similar number depend on their thumbs to put forth their identities. Those of us, who thankfully do not belong to that minority, need not be unduly worried though & like true nationalists should gladly march along the path of swiping, I mean, sweeping changes our government has charted for us to follow. The only dampener is turning out to be the cloud of uncertainty in the horizon which has turned quite a few voices from the initial euphoric chorus to suddenly sing a bit out of tune. But the bits & pieces of Bible we know, should keep us unfazed as we only have to remember, that conviction on their leader had delivered the Jews their Promised Land & to pave the way, even the mighty Red Sea had parted itself at the simple wave of a hand. So, we should blanket our doubts & discontents with all the faith in our reserve, cosily asserting ourselves that like the winter chill, these too shall pass & corruption, poverty, illiteracy, injustice, discrimination, hatred, all will be things of a gory past in the future glory days. Years down the line, history will decide, whether the macho move was based on sound prudence or sheer bravado or maybe a bit of both but most importantly, whether the dividends it reaped would be able to justify the normalcy being ripped apart from the lives of those innocents who were not at all ready for this surgical strike. Well, such trivialities can always be brushed aside as collateral damage but it s a pity that the brunt of the failure of the authorities to nab the scheming & scamming big fishers, I mean fishes, has to be borne by those law-abiding citizens lying far below in the social pyramid, who already have their hands full & who don t even dare to dream the king-size life of some of these fat black cats. And fat at whose expense? On 3 rd January the Supreme Court directed the Centre to make public within four weeks the list of corporate entities who have defaulted on a loan amount in excess of `500 crore. Last October, RBI 3

had submitted the names in a sealed envelope perusing which the Chief Justice had revealed that together those 57 debtors alone, had apparently looted our economy of a whopping `85,000 crore & if the threshold value was to be lowered, then the amount would cross `1 lakh crore. And to think that RBI had been fighting all along to guard the identity of these wilful defaulters, much to the bewilderment of the Supreme Court! It brings to mind the soul-wrenching lament of a gutted individual in a Rabindranath poem, Tumi Maharaj sadhu hole aaj, ami aaj chor bote! By the way, wonder what the great bard would have felt on the recent diktat making it mandatory to play the national anthem he composed, in cinema halls before each show, as the national flag flutters on screen & the national audience stand respectfully with the doors closed to prevent any entry or exit during this minute-long national homage. In The Sunset of the Century he had cautioned: The crimson glow of light on the horizon is not the light of thy dawn of peace, my Motherland. It is the glimmer of the funeral pyre burning to ashes the vast flesh, the self-love of the Nation dead under its own excess... Keep watch, India... Now are we keeping watch or are we becoming so dispassionate as to simply keep watching? But wait...we are certainly not short of passion. Don t we post, ping, snap, trend, chat, tweet, troll, forward, follow with a vengeance? We have the world literally under our thumb. So, don t be dumb & come, let s give out a full-throated B-h-a-r-a-t m-a-a-t-a k-i...j-a-y!!! Ah...feels good, doesn t it? 4

Recovery water or the water collected in the wells of Ash pond due to decantation is utilised as make up water for both the Ash Water Sumps of U#1-4 (through Effluent Treatment Plant of U#1,2,3) & that of U#5&6 (through Recovery Water Sump & Clariflocculator). The Hot Blow Down of the respective units are also utilised as Make-up water for these sumps. In case of any shut down or maintenance of Recovery Water Pumps, Raw Water is drawn from the Reservoir through the Ash Water Makeup Pumps (U#5,6) for maintaining the sump level. On the other hand, a major portion of the recovery water which gets treated in the ETP before finding its way into the Ash Water Sump of U#1-4 has to be let out into the power house discharge before entering the ETP itself, as with at least two of the units from U#1-4 mostly in shutdown condition due to low system demand at present, the requirement of Ash Water is far less. In this scenario, possibilities were explored for optimum usage of water & an interconnection has been done between the LP Pump (U#4) discharge header & the Ash Water Make-up (U#5&6) line coming from the reservoir. It helped matters that the pipelines lie almost adjacent to each other while crossing the Ash Water Pump House on their way towards the Powerhouse. This has resulted in less use of Raw Water as Ash Water Make-up for U#5&6 more utilization of Recovery Water from Ash Pond. To further bolster the flexibility of the Ash Water System of U#1-6, an interconnection has been done at the same location, between the Ash Water Pump (U#1,2,3) discharge header & LP Pump (U#4) discharge header. This has decreased the dependence on the two nos. of LP pumps, one of which was absolutely essential for running of U#4 as with this interconnection we can now employ the Ash Water Pumps of U#1,2,3 to cater to this requirement. 16 B. REDUCING REHEATER LOSS IN U#4,5,6: The HRH temperature in U#5,6 was maintaining low at around 520 C with MS temperature at 540 C at full load. On checking the Alarm value of Re-heater Metal protection was found to be set at 550 C. But as per BHEL drawing, the Alarm value of Re-heater Outlet header metal (SA 213 T91) temperature has been specified as 621 C. Hence the set point was increased to 570 C. On reaching this temperature the Re-heater spray gets activated in the CRH line between HP outlet & Re-heater inlet bringing the temperature down. Such high temperature is usually reached only when upper elevation mill is cut in. Since the unit is designed for zero RH spray & any such attemperation implies heat loss, the burner tilt is to be lowered during cutting in of CD or EF mill, which would prevent the temperature from shooting. As per the Efficiency Booklet published by Northern Region Headquarters, NTPC, 1 C rise in RH temperature roughly results in lowering the heat rate by about 0.59Kcal/kWh. With HRH temperature now being maintained at 540 C, at par with MS temperature, it can be safely assumed that around 12Kcal less heat energy is being required for generating 1kWh of electricity. The saving due to prevention of RH spray is also significant as the table (given overleaf for rough estimation) shows that for each ton of spray per hour, the heat rate increases by about 0.246Kcal/kWh. 15

18 VERSUS A WAR OF 400 WORDS.. SUNDAR PICHAI: BROUGHT UP IN CHENNAI, GRADUATE FROM IIT KGP, CEO OF GOOGLE WOULD YOU VIEW HIS STORY MORE AS A VALIDATION OF OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM OR THE THEORY OF BRAIN DRAIN?

THE TOPIC LAST MONTH: DO YOU THINK THE BENEFITS OF DEMONETISATION WILL OUTWEIGH THE PROBLEMS IT IS CREATING NOW? THE MAJORITY AMONGST US SEEMS TO HAVE TAKEN THE NOTE BAN ON THEIR STRIDE, AS OUT OF 140 PEOPLE WHO VOICED THEIR OPINION, 82 SAID YES, 37 NO & 21 CAN T SAY. A FEW OF THE CONTRASTING VIEWS: The topic as such can't be analysed in one word 'yes' or 'no'. There are two aspects: problems being faced & other the benefits. Whether the step may be wrong or right but I would like to describe it as a dare devil step. It's such a daring step that his own party members can't assimilate. Any party or politician would never dare to keep its position at stake by taking such step. By a single decision Indian government has attempted to tackle some major issues of Indian economy like: A parallel economy, Counterfeit currency in circulation, Terror financing etc. As the black or unaccounted money grows in the economy & at the same time the printing & supply of currency is also happening, a closed loop chain is established. In this way unaccounted money grows by leaps & bounds. This leads to economic slowdown, economic recession, rise in inflation and many other economic imbalances. Some of problems faced are: Cash crunch: common people are in big trouble because of the YES NO CAN'T SAY non availability of cash. Whole country is standing in long queues. Banks & ATMs don t have enough currencies to entertain everyone. Several people don't use bank accounts or haven't any bank accounts. They are facing problems in exchanging or depositing their hard earned accountable money. Deeply affecting business. Due to cash crunch the entire economy has been made to come to a standstill. Many poor daily wages workers are left with no jobs and their daily income has stopped because employees are unable to pay their daily wages. The new 2000 rupees note is a burden on the people as no one likes to do transaction with such high value currency. Patients & their family are also facing cash crunch. Someone not able to transact digital money. Some are able but the private hospitals aren t accepting digital money even when the government has already taken steps forward. Some family members are facing cash crunch for marriage & % 19

other ceremonies. Now the benefits: It will extinguish the unaccounted money in the system as a result reducing the liabilities of the Government & would definitely add to its finances. This would increase spending on large infrastructure projects, education, health & family welfare. It is also expected to have a habit changing effect on us. Due to demonetization people will go more cashless, keeping cash in banks thus increasing their CASA ratio (ratio of deposits). A higher CASA ratio means lower cost of funds. This will help to bank's NIM (net interest margins). Due to demonetisation the banks are having much more capacity to lend & some of the banks have already lowered the rate. This will directly benefit the common people. Demonetization will help India to become corruption free. Those indulging in taking bribe will refrain from corrupt practices as it will be hard to keep their unaccounted cash. The move will stop funding to the unlawful activities that are thriving due to unaccounted cash flow. High currency ban will rein in criminal activities like terrorism, Naxalism etc. Some are thinking that the new 2000 currency will result in more fake currency & more funding to terrorism. Even if this happens it will take next 10 to 20 years. And in my opinion demonitization should be practised at a regular interval. Fake currency circulation will be stopped as most of the fake currencies in circulation are of 500 and 1000 notes. This move has generated interest amount those people who had opened JAN DHAN accounts. They can now deposit their cash under this scheme & this money can be used for development. As a result of this tax revenues go up. Municipal corporations and such government departments flooded with old dues. Some economists see it as "if not poverty elimination, at least a difference in the poverty graph has to be seen over a period. The ultimate objective is to make India a cashless society. All the monetary transactions has to be through the banking methods and individuals have to be accountable for each penny they possess. A giant step towards dream of digital India. Aadhar Card linkage everywhere could also be a game changer. Above all, there is need of new proper, effective digital laws. So government should bring in more laws to assure the safety in digital banking transactions & charges for digital transaction like POS internal banking etc should be minimised. At this moment, by considering and taking into account the problems faced and benefits, I am not in a condition to react on the topic. But in long run I am hoping that benefits will definitely outweigh the problems being faced (based on assumptions that demonitization will succeed). If I go selfish and take in account the problems faced by me only and benefits to me only, then I can definitely say 'yes'. It has already outweigh the problems faced by the benefits. Because 20

I have not faced a single problem yet and the benefit is that I haven't to carry fatty wallet for marketing. I am doing the transactions with few clicks only. MR AMIT KUMAR EE(C&I), U#7,8, MTPS Some time has passed since our PM sprang the demonetization demon on India, catching some by surprise, some, allegedly, not. What followed was utter chaos. I saw were serpentine queues outside closed ATMs at 5 a.m. in the morning. I saw vegetablesellers and fishmongers just giving away their stuff to their regular customers- Please take them. Give money later. They will all go to waste. People like these who live off a daily income in cash, were rendered penniless. We survived. We immediately went to the malls and swiped our cards, we installed Paytm & felt safe after being initially ruffled for some days. Some even went so far as to say that this is a small price to pay for uprooting a great evil. It is very difficult for us to assess the real horror of this demonetization from our privileged positions, with our credit/debit cards and our smartphones. But, we are not the majority. There are still thousands of people who cannot afford a phone, let alone operate one. There are still thousands of people who live off the meagre cash that they earn daily. On days that followed demonetization, we clearly understood that our country wasn t equipped to handle this blow. The supply of the new notes were deplorable, to say the least. The working people, who couldn t rush to the bank every day, had to tone down their expenses according to the ATM withdrawal limit (if they found an operating ATM & had at least 3-4 hours for standing in a queue). At the end of the day, the frustrated person wasn t even sure whether it was worth enduring this harassment for digging up some black money. It is a known fact that majority of the black money are invested in gold, real estate, etc. Whatever was unearthed after demonetization was only a small fraction. According to me, demonetization gave rise to more problems than it solved. It rendered the poor people poorer. The fact that India is becoming more digital now is being shown as a development. But, the sad part is, this is not a voluntary decision by the people. It is a bitter pill that is being shoved down, saying that it will do them good. Whatever was playing in the PM s mind while he took this step, welfare of and compassion for the common people were definitely not a part of it. I do not know about the economy, but people surely have been stripped cashless. Ms ANISHA SEN D/O MR SANTANU SEN, MANAGER(F), MTPS 21

The clichés no pain no gain & 'pain today for gain tomorrow' - are being frequently bandied about with considerable merit. Indeed, the long-term benefits of demonetization far outweigh the current inconvenience. In one fell swoop, fake currency that was flooding the Indian economy from Pakistan & some other neighbours has been eliminated. Pakistan sponsored terrorists in sleeper cells in India have been rendered penniless overnight as all such subversive activities were lubricated through large denomination currency notes. The long term impact is more qualitative rather than quantitative. This is like a chain reaction and here is how it goes: Over 12 lakh crores have been deposited into banks after demonetization. Since the interest rates on borrowing has gone down, industries and people can borrow lot of money. Using this borrowed money articles will be purchased in economy. This extra demand will make the prices go up; therefore, the company selling it will become more profitable. This will create more employment and the standard of living will improve. Although tangible results and changes might take time to surface, reforms at the grass-root level have already begun. The long term benefits can be summarised as below: Digital payment platforms are recording surge in transactions. It is a welcome move as a growing shift towards cashless economy indicates improved transparency and lower costs. Plus with third party payment platforms being the medium, the government has better chances of getting hold of fraudsters in the act. Secondly, all taxes currently in India only get the government 12 lakh crores. However, if a 1.2% transaction tax is imposed then the government will earn 15 lakh crore as transaction tax alone, which it will be able to use for the development of India s infrastructure. With more and more people depositing their money in the banks, India s financial reserves never looked so healthy before. As the unaccounted cash circulating in the economy makes it way to the bank, our country s financial savings are boosted. Inflation is also expected to reduce as short term cash transactions reduce in numbers. The prime minister s latest move will lead to increased revenue collection and lowered rates oftaxation for the common man. With the recent ban on currency notes, having a bank account is a must for everyone who wants to exchange the old for the new. Although the unbanked population will look for makeshift solutions but overall there will be a surge in the number of bank accounts in India which will lead to more cash flow in the economy. To conclude, demonetization is indeed a masterstroke by PM Modi. Ms KANKANA MAJI D/O MR DILIP MAJI, A/C, E/O, MTPS 22

PILGRIM S PROGRESS: A JOURNEY TO THE HOLY CAVE 28

The last three four days we faced so many things that we were really not surprised with the news of bomb in the parking space, however we were certainly a bit nervous and scared too. Soon after, we started to realize that where were we! and why we had been escorted by the army convoy from Kashmir border? Not a single driver in that parking area allowed those army men to check their vehicle with the dogs. They argued that army can check the vehicle themselves but they won t allow the dog, as it is against their religious belief, and for this they were even ready to be killed by bullets. Finally the army men had to step back and leave the parking area almost without checking and a group of drivers started dancing on the roof top of their cars in front of those army men. I never expected such an insulting incidence for our army men would happen in front of me. I felt really hurt. At around 7 pm Gulam-ji somehow managed to come out of that parking lot by his tremendous influence in the local police and we reached Sonamarg by 8 pm. In between we all talked to our home & told everything was fine & nothing to worry, as the news channels were showing tremendous turmoil happening in the valley of Kashmir. Who knew that time that it was our last call for all of us? Gulam-ji took us to a restaurant & offered us dinner. We finished our dinner by 8.40 pm. and came out of the restaurant and found at least families strolling around in the street. We started talking to a Bengali tourist and came to know that for last three days they were stuck in Sonamarg & couldn t even manage to leave Kashmir. We were astonished. Why is it so? If Amaranth Darshan is closed for indefinite period, somebody should be able to return back easily to his place! We got the answer almost in a minute. Suddenly we found Gulam-ji running towards us & shouting continuously to other shop owners Shutter bandh karo halaat kharab hai... Everybody started running chaotically. Sabir Ali was already behind the wheel. We all got into the car. Gulam-ji came & our car started running. There were stones falling on us like showers. After a few minutes we got into a parking place of a Hotel cum restaurant. There were at least 20 cars already before we reach. We could easily hear our heart beats then. Gulam-ji was running here and there to judge the situation. He was moving so fast or we were so scared that we didn t even follow when he was getting down of the car, we were noticing him only when he was coming back to us. I still remember that voice; Gulum-ji kept on telling us Jab tak hum jinda hai, aap logo ko koi daar nahi koi aap ko chhu nehi payega yeh mera wada hai apse... & we were thinking, what if he dies! After ten-fifteen minutes Gulam-ji came back again and our car was shifted to another nearby parking lot. Like this way we were shifted four to five times and finally settled in the parking lot of Hotel Glacier Delights. Actually none of the hotels were allowing other vehicles to park as they were afraid of militant attack for giving shelter to so many vehicles along with tourists. 29

LOOK..THERE CAN YOU SEE THE END? 30

WHERE IS THE METHOD IN THIS MADNESS?! 31

By then we all had understood that we are in a great trouble. Mobile was not working as the signal was jammed by the J & K Govt. It is a standard practice there; whenever a chaotic situation happens, the first action from the Govt. is to stop mobile signal. We searched for some escape route but couldn t find a single way out in the dark. In front of us, angry militants on the street with stones; behind us, deep jungle; & we stood puzzled on the lap of Sonamarg Mountains. Few hours passed like that; we were still standing like stones keeping an eye on the street. By then most of the drivers had vanished leaving their vehicles as well as the tourists. But Gulam-ji was not amongst them. He was not only standing beside us but was also trying to loosen up the whole thing to give us a little relief. At around 11 pm. we were shifted to the back side of the hotel which was practically in the jungle as it was quite risky if all the people stood in front, militants could attack once again.. There were around 150 people waiting under the open sky. One lady got seriously injured by stones. She was bleeding severely. Later on, after an hour she was shifted to a local hospital. At around 1 am everything got settled down. The proprietor of the hotel came out & offered us to enter into his hotel & asked us to take rest at any possible corner inside that hotel at free of cost. He also provided quilt, pillow & bed sheets for the night to every single individual. In the middle of night we literally saw GOD, stretching his arm towards us for help.we all went into into the hotel quietly and slept. There were no words to thank him enough or show our gratitude by any means. Next day, at 6 am the proprietor came again and with folded hands requested us to leave for the safety of his hotel as well as for us. We left the hotel without a word & thanked him profusely for his kindness. When we were getting out of his hotel we saw there was a huge military base camp situated just within hundred meters; at least there could be 10,000 army men in that camp. We all got surprised! Why the army had not taken any steps when the tourists were running here & there for shelter? The only probable answer might be that, they were bound by orders; or might be, it was just our shameless political intervention which restrained them to take any action. At around 2 pm we moved in to a big restaurant for lunch, because all small shops were completely closed for indefinite period. There we got the news that all roads to the Srinagar Airport were blocked by the Army. No vehicles were allowed to leave the check post nearby. After lunch we had no option but to take rest in the car and wait for some good news. As there was no network coverage, not even in land line connection, we couldn t contact our home. After an hour or so we decided to climb up the nearest hill side; we had fun up there in the hill & probably also got relaxed after last few days of stressful mind. After returning back from there, we started planning to get out of Kashmir via Leh-Ladakh- Manali route as staying in Kashmir would become very 32

QUIET FLOWS THE STREAM 33

PANORAMA 34

dangerous in the coming hours; but in that case first we needed heavy fuel back up in our car and hard cash too and we had none of this sufficiently. Suddenly we came to know check post would open at 8 pm and we got a bit relieved. Gradually after sunset, we found some cars were queuing up on the street and we put us in the same line for our departure to airport. Finally at pm. we were allowed to move. Gulam-ji just flew the car up to a certain point and then told us if we follow the normal route we might stuck again with this huge queue of cars either by road blockage or by police. So if we agreed, he would take us to the airport through the villages of those militants; because militants would block the main road only & probably before they thought of anything we could pass by their village and reach the airport much earlier without much intervention of police. None of us mentally agreed with the idea but we had no other choice but to accept it. After all Gulam-ji till now had done a fabulous job which we could not even think possible? So, as decided, we crossed six to seven villages and finally crossed Lal Chowk; the most problem prone area which had witnessed some of the most brutal killings in Kashmir; courtesy Burhan Wani. Lal Chowk was completely blocked by huge stones. Gulam-ji was driving in a zig-zag manner at 100 Kmph speed. Our blood was ice cold. Finally we reached Srinagar airport in just 3 & half hours & what did we find there? Almost six-seven thousand people sitting in front of the airport; but still we felt relieved. The very next thing we did was to buy our life back at Rs 6000 per head & got the flight tickets to Jammu for the day at am. After reaching Jammu we bought train tickets for Kolkata for next day evening. Talked to our families after a long waiting of two days; everybody was very sad & anxious at home; but everything got settled down eventually. In the evening we went for Vaishno Devi darshan, which is a different story altogether. We returned back next morning, did our packing & some shopping too & finally stepped into Jammu Tawi railway station for our return journey to our respective home; sweet home. One thing I must add here, without which the story cannot be concluded; Shri Amarnath Yatra is a true test of patience, endurance, willingness & devotion. It cannot be done hassle free. Those who had been there for even five-six times, they all have their different stories & none of those stories are smooth. In train, most of the time we slept as we were completely exhausted & sometimes we just recalled our whole journey starting from obtaining the permit for Shri Amarnath Yatra, till we reached Srinagar Airport. It was awesome; probably the most thrilling trip till date for all of us. At last we reached our residences, safely without any more excitement.though our train was 15 hours late; but who cares? We survived!!! SHRI ANKUR MONDAL, SENIOR ACCOUNTANT, MTPS 35

N O M A N S L A N D..a modern day fable I t was a sunny winter morning at Nischintopur - a small suburban town near Rampurhat. Little Pratul was dancing all around the house & yelling with joy as his grandfather had told him that people were coming to cut away some trees from their garden, in order to make space for a new hall room, a grand Baithak-khana. What s more, his dadu has also promised to make him a hockey stick with the chopped off branches. He rushed to his grandmother shouting, Thammu, come & look, we are cutting trees. Being an innocent seven year old, he had obviously no conception of right or wrong. His grandmother (an avid nature lover) had planted some of those trees on her own & had argued several times with her husband not to cut them. But evidently, her requests have not been granted. Nevertheless, she laughed at her only grandson & said, Dadubhai, it's not a good thing to cut trees. Why not Thammu?, was Pratul s instant query. She was about to tell him about the give and take relationship mankind should nurture with nature, but refrained herself, realising it won t register anything in the kid s mind, especially when she couldn t convince her life partner of almost thirty years. So she just smiled & lovingly ruffled Pratul s curly locks, but in her mind she knew exactly how to give the answer to little Pratul which would make a real difference. A few days later at Pratul's birthday, his Thammu gifted him a little sapling & told him Dadubhai, plant this in the garden & take good care of it, because you know what, it s a magical tree. When it grows up it will have golden leaves. Pratul was 36

amazed. He rushed out immediately to the garden to find a suitable place for his new gift. He always listened to whatever his Thammu said & so he began to water the plant everyday after returning from school, eager to see its golden leaves. Gradually with time the magic tree became almost his friend as they both grew up together. One day Pratul's father got transferred to a new city for his job. By then both of Pratul's grandparents were no more. The family moved to the new place at a new home, leaving only Hari-kaka, the old gardener at Nischintopur. Years have passed by. Pratul is himself a father now. He has a beautiful fully furnished flat given to him by his company at the heart of the city. He lives with his now retired father, mother, wife and two children. He has all the luxuries of modern life that a man can ask for, but sometimes he feels exhausted, with a sort of emptiness around which kind of suffocates him. One day while returning from a particularly trying day at office, he decided he badly needed a break. Wouldn't it be nice to spend a relaxing weekend at Nischintopur!, he thought. Without delaying any further he started planning for a visit to their village home next week itself. To have some company, Pratul invited his brother-in-law, Subhas and his family too to join them on the trip. It s another sunny winter morning and entering the Baithak-khana of their ancestral home, Pratul is instantly reminded of a similar day many winters back. A gentle breeze is blowing from the north but the lukewarm sun is keeping the cold at bay. Pratul can see his and Subhas children playing under the big banyan tree at the garden. He notices at a distance, his parents and his wife laughing about something funny. Subhas and his wife have already set up a campfire and are busy making arrangements for an outdoor lunch. Ramu (Hari-kaka s son) is helping them. Suddenly, Pratul realized the truth his Thammu had tried to tell him that day. The whole atmosphere has turned into a source of multiple pleasures. He could feel the difference the tree has made to their garden. He could also see the golden rays of sun streaking through the leaves of Thammu s magic tree. He breathed in deeply, trying to soak it all in & whispered, Thank you thammu, you were right, it is indeed a GOLDEN TREE"... PAROMITA DAS, W/O SHRI SHANTANU DAS, AE(M), OPERN(U#1-6), MTPS 37

In pious garbs they gather in the prayer halls. Kill, Kill, they shout to the soldiers; The roar mingles in their hymns, While the Son of Man in His agony cries, O Lord, Fling, fling far away this cup filled with the bitterest of poisons. RABINDRANATH TAGORE HAD COMPOSED THIS SONG FOR THE CHRISTMAS SERVICE OF 1939 AT SANTINIKETAN - MR ABHIRUP GARAI S/O MR GANESH CH GARAI, JR KHALASI, CHEM LAB

arlier to my joining to DVC, I was not aware about DVC. After qualifying in NTPC written examination I was selected in DVC and I joined on 27 th Feb 1995 at DTPS as GET. During journey in DVC I have enjoyed more than 21 years of life. After joining in DVC I left my worries, troubles behind and started to do something more productive. Initially, our group started classroom training at NPTI, Durgapur & twice visited MTPS, which was under construction on a large barren field without anything. We had hoped that we all will be posted at MTPS, a new project. But, after completion of classroom & simulator training, our group was distributed to all the plants of DVC for on job training. Thus I started my career at BTPS- B of 3X210MW units from Oct Several times I have ventured to leave DVC, but somehow it didn t happen as my attachment to DVC refrained me to take that final step. In the meantime I was transferred to MTPS on temporary basis in 1999 but could not get release from BTPS. Then in due course, I got promotion to EE & then SDE at BTPS where I got opportunity to work with some of the eminent names of DVC like Sri R.K.Singh, Ex-Chairman, Sri A.N.Mishra, Ex-Dir(T), Sri R.Basuri, Ex-Dir(P) & others and inspired by them I have always tried to organize my life in such a manner so that I can get to do more of the things which result in improvement of the organization as well as my own intellect. Over the years, I worked in different departments like Operation, Maintenance Planning Cell, Boiler Maintenance etc. In operation, it was the regular routine of light up-synchronize-trip. During period in MPC, I got to get involved in condition monitoring & long term planning such as spare status monitoring, OPI calculation, overhauling progress monitoring, preparation of engineering declaration, performance evaluation before & after overhauling etc. In Boiler maintenance department, I was busy with attending boiler tube leakage and ID fan repairing / balancing. I have got several opportunity at BTPS for overhauling of Unit like boiler, turbine and re-commissioning of Units. With great effort of DVC team & NTPC PIE team, BTPS achieved 71% PLF in the year perhaps I also got the opportunity to go abroad for training at Singapore for one week along with Sri S B Paul, Sri S Ghosh, Sri Sanjiv Srivastava, Sri Rajib Saha & once to 47

visit to USA for inspection of valves. DURING TRAINING AT NPTI In 2011, I was transferred to KTPS for commissioning of new 500MW units & U#I was successfully commissioned. Next year I took charge as SE(Operation) in addition to CHP & Fuel. It was very difficult for me to establish a department like Fuel. It brought out my unexplored abilities as this was totally new to me & my young engineers. I faced several hurdles like strike, gate jam & starting of 1 st AMC for Coal unloading & CHP O&M. I had to deal with higher officials of Railways as well as Coal India on regular basis during this tenure. However, Koderma/ Jhumri Tilaiya is a nice place from tourism point of view with pleasant weather condition & the scenic beauty of the dam. After 5 years at KTPS, on 8 th Feb 16 I finally got to join at MTPS which has been my dream project. I took charge of TAMS (U#7&8) & soon faced a major trouble like U#7 turbine vibration which was rectified immediately. AT KTPS DURGA VISARJAN I had started my journey with DVC generation of MW & presently it is around MW. I have enjoyed a lot in all my work with employees of organization across the valley. I have the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community of DVC as long as I live. We should always try to serve our organization with selfdiscipline for its excellence & to meet objectives in future. I deliver my thanks to all who supported me in my work from day one and I express my deep appreciation to the cooperation of our DVC team. SHRI R.K.SAMAL SE(TAMS), U#7,8, MTPS 48
