1 This newspaper is intended to show you, the participants of this project, the things we do here in Belgium for the Comenius project. After a few months of hard work, here it is. Our own newspaper! We have chosen the name because we want to underline the unity of Europe. And this newspaper will be, together with your host, your guide this week. We hope you will have a wonderful experience. And last, but not least, we want to wish you a good stay here in Belgium and of course: A warm Young Belgian journalists.

4 ARCHITECTURE Belgian students visiting Koszalin We interviewed Wouter Gysemans, a former Comenius architect. He went to Poland to talk about architecture.

It was a warm and friendly family. But I couldn t really talk to them, because they didn t speak English very good. It was nice to see how people in Poland live.

Also I ve learnt that we should consider ourselves lucky and that we shouldn t complain about luxury, because some people in the world aren t as lucky as we are.

We talked about architecture in our own countries. Especially the architecture that you could find in the city where the school was located. We made a trip to different cities and a new hotel.

Now he s studying law at the university of Antwerp. He thinks Comenius is an amazing project and he would do it again, if he could. What were your experiences with your host in Poland? It was a warm and friendly family. But I couldn t really talk to them, because they didn t speak English very good. It was nice to see how people in Poland live. I ve been on vacation in Czech republic, whose culture is similar to the Polish culture. What did you learn from this trip? I learnt that the culture in Poland is totally different than ours. Also I ve learnt that we should consider ourselves lucky and that we shouldn t complain about luxury, because some people in the world aren t as lucky as we are. But my experience in Poland has taught me that everyone tries to make something beautiful of his life. What did you do in Poland with the other architects? We talked about architecture in our own countries. Especially the architecture that you could find in the city where the school was located. We made a trip to different cities and a new hotel. The last day we made a model for the ideal city. Before I left, I thought everything would turn on architecture. But when we were there, we got enough free time to do other things. It looked like vacation. What do you remember the most about your trip to Poland? The fact that the first night my hosting family and I were very tense. One of the sisters said: You tired? then go sleep! But afterwards it got better. Normally I know how to handle a situation, but when I entered my host s apartment, I didn t know what to do. Our colleagues from Poland Architects are very busy working

Almost forgotten a Belgian youngster in Instanbul On their way to Istanbul, a few youngsters needed to go to the toilet. After a long time, they finally arrived in the city.

However in the little bar there was only one person allowed to use the toilet. The rest returned to the bus and the bus had to leave the place because it had stopped in front of the traffic light.

5 Almost forgotten a Belgian youngster in Instanbul On their way to Istanbul, a few youngsters needed to go to the toilet. After a long time, they finally arrived in the city. A Turkish responsible said they could leave the bus and ask around. A Turkish student asked if the Belgian students could use the toilet. However in the little bar there was only one person allowed to use the toilet. The rest returned to the bus and the bus had to leave the place because it had stopped in front of the traffic light. The Belgian youngster had to run to the bus, but thanks to a Turkish student, made it right in time! From that moment, they started calling the Turkish student The Life-Saver. At school our students had several linguistic tasks, such as an inquiery on the influence of foreign languages in our own language. For that purpose they checked different kinds of magazines. They also compared the cell phone language and use between young people and adults. The results were remarkable.

ICT Gunnar: IT-man of the project The first Comenius project our school participated in was three years ago. Also then, Mr Busschots (one of our ICT experts at school) was very enthusiast he says.

In this project we don t only practice our languages but also our IT skills, our social skills, we learn about other cultures and so on.

He joined the project right away and sees it as not only a challenge, but also as an added value. In this project we don t only practice our languages but also our IT skills, our social skills, we learn about other cultures and so on. Travelling to another country for a meeting and staying with a host family is a very intense and unforgettable experience. Tine (one of the ICT students) can only agree with this. She herself has travelled to Hamburg in Germany and was surprised to see the differences between all our countries. It was a great experience to meet all this people and luckily real big ICT problems didn t cross their paths yet. The project turned out to be a lot more than they expected. And If I ever get another chance to be part of a project like this in the future, they won t have to ask me twice to join both ICT-ers say! Hamburg Report When I left, I was excited and a bit nervous, because we didn t know what was going to happen. We travelled by plane. When we arrived at the Hamburg airport, there were 3 German students, Aylin, Elhama and Jenny, waiting for us with a big WELCOME panel. They assured us that everything was going to be all right. So we went to our host s home. There we met the rest of the family. That evening we went to eat something in a nice place with a lot of members of the Comenius project. It was really fun and exciting and everyone was friendly! I immediately got a very good first impression: it would be a really fun week for us. During the day we did some trips and we worked about the topics we chose, like IT and journalism. At night, we had 2 parties and we went for dinner in a restaurant. The real target of this project was that we should become international friends. And I think we succeeded. In the beginning we met a lot of new people. But after some time we got to know all these people during all the activities, because we got lots of chances to talk to them. At the end we knew almost everyone of the group and it was hard to say good bye. Tine De Kesel

7 PLAYWRIGHT Our students and their hosts in Pulpi, Spain. In October the weather is still very nice in Pulpi. A few of the host families invited all the project members on a huge paella meal. It was probably the largest dish one ever saw. More than 60 people on one large table! A marvellous picture in the beautiful Spanish play about a future school. Crocodile spotted in Schoten Sept. 11: A few days ago a big green crocodile frightened some students from ST-Michielscollege Schoten. Later on it seemed that the Chalet had been the set for a futuristic play that had been filmed. The crocodile was only a plastic one.

8 We, the journalists, visited a youth press agency: STAMPmedia. It s a press agency that gives young people the opportunity to write articles, make photo reportages and documentaries about subjects they choose themselves. It s for youth of all sorts, all backgrounds and all kinds of beliefs between the age of sixteen and twenty-six. When an article is made, it s sent to other press agencies so they can put it in the newspapers if they want to. The objective is to show people that young people can write and film for everybody. Once a week they gather to talk about who s going to write about which subject and also for a little chat. At the Comenius meeting in Germany we ve learned a lot. Making new friends from the moment we arrived and it never stopped during this week. To get to know everyone better and yourself too, was a nice experience. On Tuesday we went on a discovery trip through GSM (the blue and orange school). In the afternoon we had to compare the use of the internet over European countries. We concluded that every country interpreted the task differently. The task that was more interesting to me, was the journalistic exercise on Wednesday. We were helped by an experienced teacher to make our own radio program named International Voices at Radio Comenius. After we ate in the school restaurant, we went for a teambuilding activity: canoeing. Because we left last with our boat, we had to catch up with the others. We ve seen a few buildings of this beautiful city. Afterwards we were free to go shopping or to explore some more of Hamburg. In my opinion, this week was great. While I talked to a lot of people, I discovered many cultures. There were many new opinions I ve learned. Working together in European groups was a new experience for me. When someone would ask me to go again, I won t doubt about it! I would like to thank my host, Hicran Berger, and the German Comenius team to make this wonderful week happen! This show was first shown on the Belgian television channel 2BE and now the programme has already been sold to more than 20 countries like the United States and the United Kingdom. This show has already won several prices but when the producers, Tim Van Aelst, Katrien Van Nieuwenhove and Tom Baetens, heard they were nominated for the International Emmy Awards, they were really surprised. The Emmy Awards are considered as the equivalent of the Oscars, but for television. On 22th of November in New York the producers couldn t believe their ears when they actually won this prestigious award. Rundskop nominated for Oscar For the first time in 11 years, a Belgian film has been nominated for an Academy Award in the category Best Foreign Language Film. Rundskop (Bullhead), the first feature film by Flemish writer/director Michaël Roskam, garnered the nomination, after already winning about 20 awards worldwide. The film making it to the final list of five nominees has been foreshadowed in recent months. Last autumn, Roskam was given the New Authors Audience Award and lead actor Matthias Schoenaerts the Acting Award at the American Film Institute Festival in Los Angeles. Influential industry publication Variety named Roskam one of 10 directors to watch in 2012, while last month s Palm Springs Film Festival considered a forecast for Oscar nominations handed Schoenaerts the FIPRESCI Award for Best Actor. It feels a bit like we are representing our country in a world championship, said an elated Roskam on the day of the announcement last week. Except not with such cool jerseys like cyclists. (No doubt Roskam will wear a suit when he attends the live ceremony on 26 February in Hollywood.) HOT OR NOT? HOT OR NOT?

11 23 sept. 11 Comenius project participants locked up in a school in Hamburg After a wonderful week of getting to know each other in Germany, there was a last party to say goodbye in the classrooms of GSM. When the first students wanted to go home, they noticed the door was locked and they couldn t find a way out. The caretaker of the school had closed every door. Herr Biermann, the German responsible was searching for a solution. One hour later, everyone was able to leave the building so that they could take a rest to catch their plane the next day.
