(Photo by Eric Anderson) Horseshoe Acres Campground Andover, Vermont First Chapter 116 NH Campout June 21-24, 2012 The 21 st of June was early arrival day for the campout. Eric & Cherilyn Anderson were hosts. Bob & Marie celebrated their 51 st wedding anniversary on the 24 th the last day of the campout. When we arrived on Thursday, Eric & Cherilyn Anderson, as well as Bill & Pam Prentiss were already there. What we had anticipated to be a nice trip, ended up to be a Murphy s Law trip if anything could go wrong, it did. Quite a few things did go wrong for Bob & me. It was very warm on both Thursday and Friday. On Friday, the 22 nd, we all seemed to have slept late since few of us were around the campground. Tom & Cathy Felch arrived next. They were followed by Gretta & Earle Peaslee. Soon after that, Yvonne & Don Turgeon arrived followed by Gus & Sally Girard. Tom & Cathy bought a new 2008 Holiday Rambler Neptune. Everyone seemed to be an inspector checking out Tom & Cathy s new coach as well as Bob & Marie s newly refurbished 2004 Endeavor. 1

2 Late Friday afternoon, we had Happy Hour with lots of fun catching up on the past six months. Lots of good early snacks were available to stimulate the conversation. Around 5:30-6:00 p.m., we had a wonderful supper of baked beans, rolls, coleslaw, and hot dogs. Desserts were at 7:00 p.m., with lots of goodies. After supper Cathy came over to Palmeri s coach to listen to a song Marie might sing for the Region I Rally skit that the Massachusetts and New Hampshire clubs will be putting on for the first night s entertainment. Cathy seemed to like it, so Marie will have to get going practicing it. Breakfast on Saturday consisted of French toast, sausage, fruit, juice, and pure maple syrup delicious!! We all went our separate ways for the day. Don & Yvonne, Bob & Marie, Tom & Cathy, and Eric & Cherilyn went over to the Vermont Country Store. Others went to the quilt shop. While others went out to eat lunch and enjoyed each others company. Long, long-time HRRVC and Chapter 116 members, Bill & Evelyth Basso. They live in nearby Chester, VT. (Photo by Eric Anderson) Around 4:00 p.m., we had Happy Hour. Evelyth and Bill Basso came over to the campground to visit for a short time. It was very nice seeing them again. We had a very nice meal of half a roast chicken, corn on the cob, and delicious side dishes The Vermont County Store is located in Weston, Vermont. (Photo by Eric Anderson) The Vermont County Store has an extensive collection of items to purchase. For many it is a trip down memory lane toys, kitchen items, clothing, cheeses, canned goods, fudge, etc. (Photo by Eric Anderson) 2 provided by all. This was folloed by coffee and home made desserts. After supper we had a chapter meeting, and then we headed back to our RV s for the evening. On Sunday morning we had a continental breakfast. Very nice!! Eric took group pictures.

3 A special thinks to Tom for putting on his chef hat to help Eric with hot dogs & French toast. The Club s next outing is at Lake Forest, July 6-8, It will be a buddy rally. 4 Lake Forest Resort Campout Chapter White Mountain Ramblers July 5-8, 2012 Upon our arrival at Lake Forest, Paul & Diane Spidle and Gerrie & Alan Hunter were already there. The sun broke through around 1:15 PM. Later in the afternoon Don & Yvonne Turgeon and Wilma & Dana Brooks arrived. We chatted for part of the afternoon, and around 4 PM we had Happy Hour. After this we all went to our own rigs to have a light supper. Paul & Diane, and Bob & I played a couple of games of cribbage. It was such fun. Bob & I hadn t played for a long time. The women beat the men in the first game, but the men beat the women in the last game. The games broke at 11 PM presumably for bed. On Friday, the 6 th of July, we had a bright sunny day. Bob & I spent the morning doing usual morning activities. Bob spent some time figuring out his part of providing supper. Paul & Diane did the same. Wilma visited her sister. Yvonne & Don accompanied Wilma on the trip. Don had to go back to Manchester to get his medicine that he had forgotten. They had come for about a week s stay on their own site. They later came by to chat and then they joined us for supper. Eric & Cherilyn arrived midafternoon to join in the festivities. We had a meal of American Chop Suey, rolls, salad, and homemade strawberry shortcake. Mmmm, Mmmm, Good! Dinnertime broke up at 7 PM. Between the good food and the extreme heat, we were all ready 4

5 to vegetate. Saturday morning was a bit cloudy and damp. Breakfast was super Blueberry pancakes, sausage, fruit, juice, and coffee. Everyone helped to clean up, and they were on their way doing this and that. Don & Yvonne, and Bob & I went to The Poor Man s Pub for lunch delicious lobster rolls, seafood salad, and a roast beef sub. Most of the group went to a Chicken Barbeque put on by the campground in the evening. Bob & I were quite filled from our noon lobster, so we did not eat the chicken meal. We met Millie by the water, so Millie and I spent some time getting our feet wet at the lake sooo cool and refreshing. Cappy and Bob spent quite awhile chatting while Millie and I got cooled-down. Sunday morning was cloudy, but it cleared before breakfast, The Chapter held a short business meeting. Following the meeting, we all said our good-by s. Most were gone by 11:30 AM. IT WAS A FUN TIME!! The next campout is scheduled at Tuxbury Pond, in South Hampton, NH. Pam Prentiss and Yvonne Turgeon are the co-hosts for this campout. (Photo by Eric Anderson) Tuxbury Campground South Hampton, NH Chapter White Mountain Ramblers August 16-18, 2012 On Thursday, early arrival day, Bob & I arrived at the campground about 3:20 PM. It was a sunny warm day with a few clouds and a temperature of about 87 degrees. We spent some time chatting with Yvonne & Don Turgeon. Later Eric & Cherilyn arrived and then Pam and Bill Prentiss arrived. The four couples decided to go to The Hungry Traveler for supper. The food was excellent, plentiful, and nicely presented. After we ate, we formed a car caravan ride along the ocean down towards Hampton Beach via Salisbury, Seabrook, and Hampton. There were many changes all along the beach. Many new homes and condos had been built. The campground at Hampton Beach had been expanded with facilities for quite a few recreational vehicles. The Hampton Beach area was beautiful compared to a few years back. There were many cabanas for sitting, resting, and getting shade from the sun. Two large buildings had been built for rest areas 6 and changing clothes along the strip just next to the beach. The shell that had been rebuilt, and it was Amesbury, MA Not far from the campground, many of the original 19th century textile mill buildings in Amesbury, have been revitalized to house restaurants, offices, shops, etc. (Photo by Eric Anderson)

7 quite impressive. It is larger than the older one, and to me, the acoustics were quite good. If you haven t seen it lately, take a casual ride through Hampton This is depicted on one of the walls on one of the restored mill buildings in Amesbury. It is there to recognize Al Capp, the creator of the Li l Abner cartoon series. His studio was located in downtown Amesbury. (Photo by Eric Anderson) Beach. By the way, if you have young grandchildren, you ll be surprised with the size of the playground. Janet & Art had arrived while we were gone. We chatted a bit, and then retired for the night. Friday was bright and sunny. I spent a good part of the morning practicing the song for the Region I Rally skit and a song for an Assisted Living Home that my singing group will be going to visit. The rest of the day, people did this and that. Those who stayed at the campground were working on preparing the supper for the group. The meal prepared by Pam and Yvonne was very good Yummy! Bob & I returned to our unit, but others played cards in the Prentiss coach. They got back to their units just in time to miss a downpour from a passing thunderstorm. It was both sunny and cloudy on Saturday. After breakfast, some took the opportunity to go on a boat tour to the Isles of Shoals. From what I heard, everyone enjoyed their trip. (Pam Prentiss write-up and her photos from that trip are below.) Later in the day we went to Markey s for mostly seafood fair Excellent!! Upon arriving back to the campground we had a choice of chocolate chip coconut bars, or strawberry shortcake, or both. Markey s Restaurant, with a great view across the inlet at Seabrook, provided our campers with an outstanding seafood dinner Saturday evening. (Photo by Eric Anderson) On Sunday, we awakened to clouds, but later on the sun came out to visit us. Breakfast was from 8:30-9:30 AM. It consisted of plain pancakes or blueberry ones with maple syrup, fruit and coffee. Soon afterwards we had an informal meeting about next year s officers. The meeting stopped at about 10:00 AM since we had to ready our rigs for departure. We all hope to see you at Region 1 Rally in Greenfield, MA., September 17-19, HAPPY CAMPING!! During our stay at the campground, the local wildlife in the form of a porcupine made an appearance. The campers dogs were quickly rounded up to ensure for their safety. 8 The ISLES OF SHOALS Boat Trip August 18, 2012 by Pam Prentiss Five brave souls braved the cloudy weather to board the Isles of Shoals Steamship Company boat, the SS Thomas Leighton, for a cruise around the Portsmouth Harbor, the Piscataqua River, and the Isles of Shoals. We boarded the boat and found prime seats at the bow on the mid-deck. As the boat started to leave, the sun tried to break through the clouds. Our captain and his first mate gave us many details of the scenery as we passed. We were able to see a decommissioned Nuclear Submarine getting prepared to be towed to Seattle, the Portsmouth Naval base, the old prison, and the remains of old forts along the river both on the Maine side and the New Hampshire side. We sailed out into open water, and we found the seas to be extremely calm. On our journey to Star Island, we actually saw Air Force One on its approach to Pease Air force Base. Once at Star Island, we had half the boat disembark for the 3-hour tour of the island. It is the second largest of the nine islands that make up the Isles of Shoals. Five are in Maine and four are in New Hampshire. The sun came out while we were docked. It was amazing to see the various buildings that have survived through the years on the islands. The old hotel is now a conference center for the United Church of Christ and the Unitarian churches. We soon were underway again making our way near some of the smaller islands on our way back to the mainland. We were told much of the history that surrounded the area, and it was quite fascinating. Although it got cloudy again during the trip back, not a single raindrop was felt during the entire trip. We all had a great time, and we look forward to one day, enjoying the longer trip that includes a stop on the island to explore. Thanks for your participation in this past weekend. It was a fun weekend, and I will see you in September.
