2 Rogue Valley A s 2 is an Oregon Non-Profit Corporation February 2010 Rogue Valley A Meeting Minutes: January 16, 2010 Our first meeting of the new year was called to order at 10:00am by our new president Dotty. Jerry M. introduced his guests Mr. And Mrs. Dale O Harra and father Dale. Thanks to Marge for our coffee and Nell and Jerry for our donuts. A motion was made by Kitsy to approve the minutes from our December meeting and Jerry seconded the motion. The Treasurer s report was approved. Stan audited our 2009 books and found the records perfect. Our Nell was awarded a certificate of appreciation from MAFCA for the great work she does as the chapter s editor of our newsletter, Manifold News. Dick Mace presented Dotty with a pin for serving our chapter as president for 3 different years. Thank you, Nell and Dotty. Mary Ann and Jim Martin will continue to be our Tour Chairs. Kitsy is our Treasurer. We still need a Sunshine Chairperson!!! Tour coming up, Alpaca Ranch in June. Led by Bob and Kitsy Wikkerink for old Ford dealership signs. We had a guest from Cliff s Auto Shop, Adam Jones. Adam discussed and answered questions about the electrical workings of the Model A. It was a very informative and interesting time. Adam brought with him a 6 volt alternator as a gift for the club. Which raffle tickets were sold for the drawing. Thanks again to Adam for the alternator. Just a reminder to old and new members who haven t paid their dues. Please do so asap. Margaret Land won the 50/50. Way to go Margaret!! She did not draw the joker.. Then we had the drawing for the 6 volt alternator. Bob Winkkerink won the alternator and Dotty adjourned the meeting at 11:45. Respectfully submitted, Judy Wadleigh, Secretary Editor s Note: Since the minutes were recorded by Judy Wadleigh, Bill Harry passed away on Sunday, January 17, RVA Officers 2010 President: Dotty Pearson dotdash496@yahoo.com Vice President: Victor Wigginton donw2@mind.net Co-Secretary: Judy Wadleigh swadleigh@hotmail.com Margaret Land KingGeo7@charter.net Treasurer: Kitsy Wikkerink rcwikk@yahoo.com Past President: Sam White sandmw@gmail.com Support Team Editor/Membership Nell Mathern jnmathern@gmail.com Hospitality: Marge McClure Gladyce Maloney happycook@charter.net MAFCA News Reporter: George Rambo GWRAMBO@cmc.net Sunshine Chairperson: Marilyn Pringle jpringle3@earthlink.net Tour Chairs: Jim & Mary Ann Martin We heard Gladys is doing good. 3 February At our first meeting for 2010 I was honored to present our Manifold News Editor, Nell Mathern a much deserved Certificate of Merit from MAFCA. Our thanks and congratulations Nell for your tireless work on our Newsletter. Our first meeting of the year was very busy and informative; with Marilyn Pringle volunteering as Sunshine Chairman. If you or someone in the club needs a little cheering up contact Marilyn so she can send out a greeting card. Dick Mace volunteered as liaison regarding the proposed Model A Ford Museum. A third person committee for MAFFI is looking for a photo of a Model-A era building to use as a role model for a least one side of the museum s building. They said they have been searching internet sites as well a books, Ford archives and other locations, but the perfect photo has not been found yet. The actual building is likely to be pre-engineered steel-frame structure approximately 60 to 80 feet long. They said if the entrance to the museum is along one of these sides, the façade of a Ford Dealership could be reproduced along the length of the building to give the appearance of the original Ford structure If you can find any Model-A Ford dealerships photos that may fit the criteria for the building, please mail or your photo to our Rogue Valley A s liaison, Dick Mace. The future home of the museum will be located in Hickory Corners, Michigan and will be part of the Gilmore Museum. A way to help towards the reality of the museum is joining MAFFI, (Model A Ford Foundation, Inc.) Dues are $25 a year, $70 for three years. The website is for more information and donation you can check out their website. Our guest speaker at our January meeting was Adam Jones, president of Cliff s Auto Electric, Inc. located on Riverside in Medford. Adam talked about the logistics regarding the electrical system on a Model A and answered many questions our members had. After listening to Adam I feel I know a tiny something about our Model-A s internal workings. If you need help with your Model A system Adam is certainly the person to go to. Our tour chairs Jim and Mary Ann Martin are needing ideas for tours to fill the months that haven t been picked yet, so if you have a fun idea please let them know asap. If anyone knows of a quest speaker that would be a benefit to our club please arrange that ahead of time and our Editor, Nell will put it in the bulletin. When working on your Model A and you have found a neat tip that may make the job a little easier let Nell know and she can put it in a column called Tech. Tips. And I have one; use only distilled water in your Model A battery. : - ) Tell we meet again. President Dotty Photo by George Rambo Editor s Note: Dotty Pearson has served our chapter as president for three different years, 2007, 2008 and now again in Dick Mace, president of the Northwest Region presented Dotty with a President s Pin We as a club appreciate all the hard work Dotty gives to our Rogue Valley A s Chapter. AHOOGA! Photo by George Rambo

5 I WAS ALWAYS IN LOVE WITH THE AUTOMOBILE February 2010 Continued from George Rambo s book of memories (See Jan. Manifold News) 5 In the short space of time between delivery of the new car in 1947 and the sale of the 35 Chevy, I managed to get in a little extracurricular activity with the 35! My Mother had just given birth to my sister Laura Jo, born Jan , and was still in the Hospital in Salem. Dad went back to the Hospital the next day, and since I was not allowed to be in the room with Mother and baby, (I was to young) I was left at home. I was almost 11 at the time and Grandpa and Grandma Champ were across the road in case of problems or a place to eat, so why not! Why not! Good question! There it was! Staring at me! Taunting me! Dad would be gone most of the day! Nobody would know! I was capable of doing it! Why not!! So on this pleasant Saturday of January 24, 1948, while I was contemplating these wrongdoings, Three friends came by; Mervin Haun, Marlin Stewart and Jerry Larson or perhaps Allan Vail. Not certain. With the Friends arrival, Reason packed it s bags and left town! Soon my bragging about driving abilities brought about the following discussion; No you can t!! Yes I can!! You re a liar!! No I Ain t!! I dare you to!! I ain t suppose to!! You re a Coward!! No I Ain t!! I Double Dare you!! The Double Dare was a low blow!! Only a Double Dog Dare could have been more of an Insult!! Well, that did it, in short order keys were obtained from the house, and the Merry Band of Miscreants were adventure bound with a soon to be 11 year old driver at the wheel of a 1935 Chevrolet, and three other Moron s planted on the running boards! What little Reason was left, did keep me inside the confines of our two acres. The evidence of the fact that I did not venture out on the Hi-way, worked in my favor, during the Family Court session that occurred three day s later. The Chief witness for the prosecution, ( My Grandfather) blabbed everything to the Judge (Dad) and one Jury member! (Mother). My Friends refused to appear in my defense, and the Jury member didn t even leave the room to deliberate! Guilty as charged! The Trial date was January 27 th 1948! My 11 th Birthday!! Presents were Skimpy that year! The truth of this story is, that while I was capable of driving on the Hwy, and I had done so with my parents along. They just did not want me doing it without them or putting other people in danger. Although I was put out with Grandfather Champ for Ratting on me, he was only looking out for me, and I did not remain angry at him for any length of time! This incident may well have been the reason for the speedy sale of the 1935 Chevy! Parents are SO short-sighted! Some responsibility for this incident must still rest with my Father, because when I was about 5 years old he would let me set on his lap and steer this same car on the Hwy. Even on paved roads there was little traffic and you could go 4 or 5 miles and never see another car. By the time I was 6, I could shift as well, and by age 9, I could operate the brakes and clutch and see the road. The rest you can guess! George and Grandma Champ with the 1935 Chevrolet.
