5 Welcome to MotorCities-ANHA! R ouge River Tour The Rouge River is not particularly wide nor deep. This river with its three branches and tributaries looks more like a tree with three thin limbs than a major watershed. When you discover the achievements that have been made along its shorelines however, you realize that the Rouge River had worldwide impact as it nurtured the evolution of the auto indistry. Along the Rouge, many armaments for WWII were manufactured, helping to ensure worldwide freedom. The struggle for labor rights also took place along its banks, and widespread implementation of the moving assembly line changed manufacturing and defined the industrial focus of the 20th century. On this self-guided tour you will travel along the bottom of a pre-historic lake that once covered all of southeast Michigan. You will pass over the same ground that the Anishnabeg people, who migrated to this region from the Atlantic seaboard, used for hunting, fishing, and farming. These sites were again used by European settlers who followed the French explorers and voyageurs looking for furs. These pioneers used the power of the waterfalls that dotted this river system to build mills and irrigate their farms. Escaping slaves also followed the Rouge River on their quest for freedom. Around 1918, Henry Ford began purchasing many mills along the Rouge River, and rebuilt many of them to be small-parts factories for Ford Motor Company. These Village Industry Plants were powered by hydroelectricity, and the employees were farmers who worked part-time in the plants during the farming off-season. In order to rebuild the old milldams to create hydropower, Henry Ford struck a partnership with the Wayne County Road Commissioners. In this arrangement, the Road Commission built the hydro dams and connecting roadways to the mills. Ford Motor Company, in turn, agreed to deed over the land and eventually the mills to the Road Commission, as Park Trustees, for incorporation into Wayne County s Hines Park. Enjoy yourself as you travel along this extroadinary waterway. 3

In 1863, this Nankin Mills structure was re-built by Samuel Hardenburg after the original one burned. Nankin Mills was believed to be tied to the Underground Railroad through the abolitionist efforts of the Reverend Marcus Swift. In 1918, Henry Ford purchased the old mill from Floyd Bassett, making it the first mill purchased for his Village Industry Project, which combined agricultural and factory work to provide employees year round, productive jobs. Working with Thomas Edison, Ford converted the mill into a hydroelectric plant. In 1920, the mill began making screws and was later retooled for the production of stencils. During WW II, parts for the B24 Bomber being manufactured at Willow Run Airport, were made here. In 1948, after the Mill closed, Nankin was given to the Wayne County Road Commission as Park Trustees to incorporate the mill into the Middle Rouge Parkway. The Mill is presently a Wayne County Interpretive Center. Guided and self-guided tours are available. Please allow 1 hours to see the major exhibits. The Waterford Dam and race were purchased by Henry Ford in 1925 and converted into one of his Village Industry Plants. Henry re-named the mill after the Village of Waterford. The Mill opened in 1925 as the 6th Village Industry Plant. It produced high precision gauges up to the late 1950s. The workers at Waterford were almost all of Swedish decent and had been employed by another company in New Jersey. Ford purchased the company and this division was moved to Waterford. In 1948, Nankin, Newburgh, Phoenix and Wilcox Mills were given to the Wayne County Park Trustees. The tap, drill and stencil manufacturing divisions were moved to an annex, which was built onto the Waterford Plant. Presently the Mill is being adaptively re-used for light manufacturing. Built by three brothers, Meads Mill was once the largest gristmill in Michigan with an 18-foot water wheel producing over 200 barrels of flour a day. The mill was destroyed by fire for the second time just before the Civil War. Waterford Village became a stop on the Underground Railroad through the abolitionist activities of Samuel Pettibone Mead. The Village of Waterford is said to have supplied the largest force of volunteers from Michigan during the Civil War. Mr. Robert Wallace, an escaped slave, settled here after working at the Mill, and became a Methodist Minister opening the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The Ramsdell Brothers and Samuel Mead are buried in the local cemetery. Unusual for the time, former slaves are also buried here at Mead s request. Due to the popularity of the area with picnickers, Mrs. Benton gave the land to the Park Trustees in The first comfort station located here was a wooden cabin that was rebuilt into the current beautiful Tudor style station. During the prohibition era, a moonshine operation could be found on Cass Benton Hill. When the prohibition officers patrolled the area, the moonshine was hidden in the nearby woods. More than just a popular local place, it was visited by many others, who often drove miles to fill jugs with the water. In 1932, the Northville Rotary Club erected a shelter over it and enclosed the pipe in decorative fieldstone. The Village of Northville and the well once served as the inspiration for the nation wide syndicated comic strip, the Nebbs, by Hess, who frequented the area during the 1940s while visiting a friend. By 1880, the business had grown to be one of the finest hatcheries in the United States. The Federal Government leased the buildings and kept Frank in charge of this location and also two other sub-stations in Detroit and Alpena. By 1935, it was the only federal fish hatchery in the state and continued to raise fish until Frank Clark, who served as the president of the National Fisheries Association, died in The original house and pond still stand on the site. Nearly 20 years earlier, this site was home to Camp Legion, a summer farming project for underprivileged boys. Surrounded by 480 acres of farmland, the program taught farming skills, provided living quarters, and paid $2 a day. By 1943, the program expanded to year round and included academic and shop classes as well as an occupational rehabilitation center for disabled WWII veterans. As Henry II, Ford s grandson, took the company reins, many of Henry s favorite programs were ended. Designed by architect Albert Kahn between 1917 and 1925, this plant layout enabled raw materials to be converted into a finished vehicle all in one location. Ford moved his Highland Park production to this location and at its peak the Rouge employed nearly 75,000 people. The Rouge plant was also the location for two important labor events; the 1932 Hunger March and the 1937 Battle of the Overpass. Ford was strongly opposed to the creation and support of unions, however these two events helped provide the needed foundation for the unionization of Ford Motor Co. in Today, Ford s Rouge plant continues to be a leader in the industry with a nearly $2 billion dollar project creating new green space and environmental stewardship at the complex. 44 Heritage Area is one of 23 congressionally designated National Heritage Areas in the United States. Our goal is to preserve and share our internationally significant auto and labor heritage story with residents and visitors alike. To accomplish this task, our organization works in partnership with local institutions, governments, and individuals in developing projects and programming that push us towards reaching this goal. We put the world on wheels and we want to share this amazing story with you. Our efforts are primarily divided into three program areas: Education We are developing several programs that will help students, residents, and visitors understand how the auto industry shaped this region and changed how the world moves. The programs include recording personal histories and an educational curriculum for students K-12. Revitalization We are developing programs that will enable communities to work toward preserving their significant auto heritage sites and help revitalize their surrounding communities. By focusing on our communities, our resources, and our people, we expect to build increasing pride throughout the region, celebrating our unique place in America s story. Programs include the Top 11 Sites and Stories listing, the Financial Resources Tool Kit for Historic Properties, and ongoing partnership with the Historic American Engineering Record program of the National Park Service. Tourism We are developing programs that will welcome visitors to the National Heritage Area and encourage them to discover firsthand this amazing story. Nine museums spread across the heritage area act as our Gateway Museums with kiosks where visitors are orientated to the National Heritage Area. These kiosks provide visitors with tour brochures and information that allow people to go out and explore the sites where history really happened. This booklet is the newest part of our tourism program. The National Park Service has been given as part of its purpose, the national responsibility to save our country s cultural and heritage resources and to develop these resources into meaningful experiences for visitors as they explore America s history. As a National Heritage Area, Heritage Area receives financial and technical support from the National Park Service to accomplish this goal as it relates to our Nation s automotive heritage. We celebrate a living industry one that is as important to the economic, cultural and social fabric of our communities today as it was one hundred years ago. No other industry brought greater change to American culture and our everyday lives. No other story better captures the struggle to balance capitalism with livable workplaces, a fair standard of living, and environmental quality for all citizens. By telling the entire story from as many perspectives as possible, we want to ensure that citizens find inspiration in the ongoing innovations, struggles, successes, and challenges that are part of the automobile industry. 42
