In the first issue we provided you with information about what you can expect from attending the IP in Göttingen and why it is such an important part of your master s degree. In this edition we will be taking care of the questions when and where. The final edition will give you more detailed information about how the IP works (i.e. what the programme will be) and who will be attending. Since we are so excited at the prospect of welcoming so many international guests to the Georg-August- Universität, we will give you peek into some parts of the programme in this edition! When? Before the IP: In this issue we remind you of the upcoming deadlines for your abstracts and IP papers. During the IP: An outline of the programme can be found on page 2, and we also tell you about the highly anticipated event: Europa im Zwiegespräch (Europe in Dialogue). In this issue: 2 Where? Many of you are wondering where you will be staying during the IP. In the following pages we will let you know about this, as well as inform you in more detail about how to travel to Göttingen. Europa im Zwiegespräch In conjunction with Göttingen s Literarisches Zentrum (Literary Centre), we are very excited to be welcoming two renowned guests, Péter Nádas and Richard Swartz, who will be speaking on Thursday 23rd June at the Paulinerkirche in Göttingen. This event forms part of the IP, and due to the distinguished nature of the two European intellectuals, is also open to the general public. The Hungarian author Péter Nádas ( A Book of Memories ) and the Swedish journalist and writer Richard Swartz ( A House in Istria ) are co-authors of the captivating and thought-provoking book Zwiesprache (Dialogue), in which they, as an Ostmensch and a Westmensch, spend four days in the spring before the fall of the Iron Curtain, discussing and discovering what they have in common and the different ways in which they view the world, due to their different experiences of life. This discussion brings many interesting and surprising insights to light, regarding both political concepts, and more personal topics. Both authors will be resuming this fascinating dialogue for us, as part of the IP. They will be discussing what Europe means for them and are very much looking forward to sharing this time with us in Göttingen!

4 Vignette 2, March 2011 Page 4 Arrival in Göttingen The arrival (19th June) and departure (30th June) dates of the IP have already been set and if you haven t done so already, you are advised to book your travel to Göttingen as soon as possible. The nearest airport is located in Hanover. From the airport you need to take the S-Bahn (city train) to Hanover central Railway station (Hannover Hauptbahnhof) (line S5). This takes approximately 20 minutes. From here you can take a direct train to Göttingen. There are 2 options: you may take an Inter-City (IC) or Inter-City-Express (ICE) train, which take about 35 minutes and cost between 27 and 34 if you buy the tickets on the day. Alternatively you can take the Metronom train, which takes approximately 1 hour 15 finds minutes, but only costs around 22. Other airports, which you may want to consider flying to, include Frankfurt am Main, Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, Dortmund and Köln/Bonn. You can check the train connections and ticket prices from these locations (as well as from other locations you may be travelling from) on the Deutsche Bahn website in English: index.shtml. Germany has a very efficient train transportation network and Göttingen is located on many long distance train routes. as you exit the station, provide you with a map and direct you onwards. The youth hostel is located just over 2km from the station, but there is a bus from the station which will take you directly there: bus line 6. Bus stop: Jugendherberge (on Ewaldstrasse). The first bus on Sundays is at 11.53; the last bus is at If you arrive outside these times, you may either take a taxi or walk. Some of you may also choose to travel by car to Göttingen. Göttingen well connected by motorways and is located just off the Autobahn A7, as can be seen on the map below. It is important that you buy your ticket before boarding the train. You can check train departure information (including platform information) on the yellow posters (Abfahrt) or on the electronic screens. All long distance coaches with stops in Göttingen arrive at the train station. On arrival in Göttingen, follow signs out of the station to Zentrum/City Centre. 5 Reimbursement of Travel Costs The IP funding from the European Commission means that we can provide a partial reimbursement for the travel costs acquired by those students who need to travel to and/or from the IP in Göttingen. You will receive a reimbursement of at least 50% of your travel costs; the exact amount will be confirmed to you after the IP. All students elligible should complete a special reimbursement form (this will be sent to you before the IP), and this should be handed in or sent to the Euroculture secretariat in Groningen, together with your original tickets/receipts/boarding passes, by 25th July Please ensure that you book your travel as soon as possible, in order to obtain the cheapest possible prices. If you book an expensive ticket only a few days in advance of the IP, this will be taken into account when making the final calculations for reimbursement. If you are travelling by car, please keep the receipts of fuel purchased and a record of the distance travelled. Students from the ECW programmes are not able to submit applications for the reimbursement of travel costs. Any travel costs to/from non-eu locations will not be reimbursed. IP Papers, Abstracts, Presentations... As you are already aware, your IP Abstracts need to be submitted by 15th April Please send them to: ip2011@uni-goettingen.de The IP papers are due on 15th May 2011 and should be submitted to the same address. More information with regards to whose paper you will be peer reviewing, how the assessment process works and other IP requirements is contained within the IP Paper Guide (sent to you at the end of March) and IP Presentation Guide (to be sent to you in due course). You will be doing your presentation in a classroom similar to the one pictured below. Cover Contest Reminder You still have another month left to submit entries for the IP cover contest! The first IP vignette contains more information about the competition, in which you are invited to design a cover for the IP Programme booklet which all students will receive. All entries should be related to the IP theme, Europe: Space for transcultural existence? Apart from that, you are free to use your imagination to design a cover in whichever way you like. The cover should have both, front and back side (both in A4 format) and be submitted as a JPG, GIF, BMP or PDF document to our address: ip2011@uni-goettingen.de We look forward to receiving more of your ideas and choosing a winner, who will receive a prize at the gala dinner! 6 Vignette 2, March 2011 Page 6 Accommodation in Göttingen Youth Hostel All students visiting Göttingen for the IP will be accommodated in Göttingen s Youth Hostel for the duration of the IP; from the 19th June for 11 nights. (Students who are in Göttingen for the 2 nd semester should stay in their own accommodation.) This comfortable and high quality youth hostel is located just 15 minutes walk from the main university campus. The bedrooms accommodate groups of 2, 4, 5 or 6 people and we will divide students into male and female groups beforehand. Further information and contact details of the youth hostel can be found on the following website: Please note, if you plan to arrive in Göttingen before the 19th June and/or depart after the 30th June, you will need to arrange your own accommodation for the nights that do not form part of the IP. Meals Breakfast is provided for at the youth hostel for all students staying there. Lunch each day is also provided by the IP organisers and most day this will be at the Zentralmensa on the main university campus. The university s Z-Mensa offers a wide range of hot meals at lunch time (including a vegetarian option) as well as a salad bar. The IP programme also includes one evening meal (25th June); you are responsible for you own evening meals on all other days. The Z- Mensa is open until 10pm but Göttingen also has a wide range of restaurants in the city centre and near the university campus. Grundkurs Deutsch Part II Below are some phrases which might come in handy when travelling to/from Göttingen and finding your way around the city. Does this train go to...? Which is the bus for...?
