July 2015 President's Message Where did June go? It s been quite a month! While our car show at Gretna High School lacked the number of entries we had hoped for, it was a success in several areas. First, we had a large number of enthusiastic club members show up, with their cars, to help run things. I thank each of you who showed up that day. Without you, the show would have been much more difficult. We also provided a service for the public as they got to see some fantastic cars, and to the SkillsUSA students as they got more acquainted with the hobby, while providing them an opportunity to raise funds for their educational activities. Our club also made some money, which never hurts. Finally, we got some positive coverage in the Gretna and Omaha newspapers both before and after the show. Notwithstanding the weather, it was still a good day. Our next chance to shine will be on August 16 th at Fort Omaha s Vintage Wheels at the Fort. Nine Model As representing the Meadowlarks made the trip to the Regional meet in St Joseph, Missouri. The NW Missouri Chapter organized some great drives through beautiful countryside. We got to see an operational dairy, a modern windfarm, an abbey, and a fabulous farm machinery and antique collection. Some of us even made a side trip to Jamesport to see the Amish. Besides having a good time, we also learned some things that will help us plan for the 2017 Regional in Omaha. We had great participation for dinner at Flying J. Thanks to Anne Krueger for organizing that event. Just a couple days ago, a group returned from Boone, Iowa, where I understand everyone had a good time. Thanks to John Leddy for organizing that tour. Looking to July, a group will soon depart on a long trip to Door County, Wisconsin. We also have a day trip to Meadowlark Model A Ford Club, Omaha, NE Contents: July Events Eat-out Germanfest Tour Gretna Parade Keeping your Tires Young Events after July Greenfield Tour Vintage Wheels at the Fort International Model A Day Grandparents Day Past Events More Past Events Member News Ads the Syracuse Germanfest on July 11th. So far, 15 Model As have signed up for the Gretna parade on July 18th. Last year we had 18, so let s see if we can top that number this year. We re now in the middle of the Model A driving season. Your cars WANT to be driven. Let s get them out, enjoy them, and let the public see and appreciate them. See you down the road. Greg Bowden Tech Talk John Leddy will present the Tech Talk at the July meeting. His topic is Rear end problems. Meeting Treats Thanks to Esther Miller and Anne Krueger for the great treats at the June meeting. The treats for the June meeting will be provided by Linda Crisman and???. Our sign up sheet is a little light from now on. If you still want to have treats at the meeting, you have to help out. Please contact Anne Krueger (akru@cox.net, ) if you can bring treats to the July meeting. "A" big hearty thank you to David & Esther Miller, who recently donated the use of their 1914 Model T touring car for a local wedding. For their time and effort, the Meadowlark Model A Club received a generous monetary donation. Thank you! 1

You can still join us in spirit, if you wish, by following us on the Meadowlark Tour Blog at meadowlarks.omahaneb.org/blog/. You will need a password, which will be provided separately. No-fee Show & Shine Grand Parade Viener Dog Races Free watermelon Great German food Wine tasting and a beer garden. We will depart from the Runza in Springfield at 8:30 AM. Runza is on the east side of Highway 50, just south of Platteview Road. Information about all the activities for Germanfest 2015 can be found on the following website: germanfest.php Greg Bowden Gretna Days Parade July 18 We will meet at 9:30 9:45 AM on Westgaye St. in Gretna. This is the same street as last year. For those of you who remember the Shriners last year, they are going to be in the parade again. They are going to be instructed to allow us to go south on Scott St through them. Please don t let them intimidate you. We will be approximately in the same position as last year near the front of the parade line up. From the North and East, I would suggest going west from US Hwy 6 and 370 on W Gruenther Rd to 216 th St. At the stop sign turn south (left) past McKinney s estate to Angus (the next stop sign). Turn east (left) over the railroad track bridge to Scott St. Turn south (right) on Scott St. one block to Figg St. and then west (right) to Westgaye St. Turn left on Westgaye and we will be lining up in that block. Those who come from the south should turn off of Hwy 6 on 216 th St. and go to Angus and turn east (right). Then follow directions for Map to our assigned starting place for the Gretna Parade. 3 Scott St. You might be able to follow the curve off of 216 th to Westgaye, but may have many other entries queuing up along that street. Dale Jergensen Story about Gretna Days in the Gretna Breeze includes a photo of our cars last year.
Preview of Events coming up after July VINTAGE WHEELS AT THE FORT AUGUST 16 10:00 AM TO 3:00 PM Our 4 th Vintage Wheels show will be Sunday, August 16 th at Fort Omaha. This will be the third year we ve had the show at the Fort Omaha Campus of the Metropolitan Community College and the home of our co-host, the Douglas County Historical Society and we have a chance to make it the best show yet. The grounds of the old fort make a perfect setting to display vintage vehicles and there is ample room for many activities to make this more than just a car show. We have many such activities planned and will need a lot of help to assure that everything runs smoothly. The Historical Society will have the General Crook House open for free tours and possibly a few other activities. We will operate a food tent similar to that of the past two years and need volunteers to cook, serve and otherwise staff the tent. Some other tasks which require help are setup, registration, parking, moving picnic tables, take down, clean up, and whatever other unplanned needs arise. We ll also need help coordinating free rides and other activities such as the brass band, Irish dancers, a voting process for awards, etc. Please sign up for whatever task appeals to you. Early signups (July meeting) make it much easier to plan for a smooth day and help avoid ulcers for the planners. We ve always had wonderful participation from everyone and look forward to another great event. Barney Deden Summer picnic Saturday, August 29 Our club picnic will be at Mike and Marilyn Cahalane's acreage west of Plattsmouth. The club will supply the chicken. Everyone please bring a side or dessert. Drinks provided by the club will be iced tea and water. If you want something else to drink, please bring it. Also bring lawn chairs. Be sure and sign up. More info next month with directions. Anne Krueger 4 GRANDPARENTS DAY SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 Most vintage car owners have experienced the good will earned by displaying our vehicles at a retirement home. Could there be a better time to do this than on a day devoted to recognizing grandparents? We have made arrangements to display our cars at the Golden Living Home at 5505 Grover Street on September 13 th. The plan is to meet at Barney Deden s shop at 3301 South 66 th Avenue Circle any time after 1:00 on that date and drive to Golden Living as a group at 2:00. The Director of Activities at the home is planning an afternoon of activities for the residents and their families and is very happy to have our cars involved. Sign up for participation soon so I can let her know how many parking spaces to save for us. Barney Deden 2015 MODEL A DAY SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 Did you have trouble the last few years thinking of a good destination for a drive to celebrate International Model A Day? Join other Meadowlarks and drivers from the Cornhusker Model A Club for a day trip to the Morton Mansion in Nebraska City. We re working with the Arbor Lodge Coordinator to make this a well-organized and enjoyable event and will have more details well in advance of the trip. Barney Deden Eagles, Tractors, and Fords of Pottawattamie County Sunday, October 4th We will be touring to Griswold, Iowa to look at a couple antique tractor and farm equipment museums, as well as a private collection of Fords, including tractors, cars and trucks. This link is from a news article that talks about Griswold s various museums. On the way, we will make a couple short stops to view two of artist Russell Christensen s bronze Eagle statues, created as part of his "Eagles of Honor" project to place a large eagle in each Pottawattamie County community to honor of our nation's veterans. See More details will be provided later. This trip will include lunch in Griswold. POC Greg Bowden
More Upcoming Events Greenfield Iowa Tour August 5-7 There is still time to sign up for this tour, but do it soon. If you don t come to the July meeting, contact Nancy and Gayle ( ). Greenfield is only about 85 miles from Omaha, so you might consider joining the tour for just a day or two. Be sure to discuss this with Nancy and Gayle, though, because the itinerary might change. This is an abbreviated itinerary. Nancy and Gayle can provide you with the full itinerary. Wednesday, August 5 - Greenfield, Iowa: Warren Cultural Center & shopping OR Iowa Aviation Museum Also, the Greenfield Freedom Rock the first in Bubba s series of Freedom Rocks Thursday, August 6 - Winterset, Iowa: Madison County Historical Complex & John Wayne Birthplace After dinner, Schildberg Car Collection Friday, August 7 - Orient, Iowa: Wallace Center & Corning, Iowa: Johnny Carson birthplace and Bubba s Rock We will be staying at the historic Hotel Greenfield. If you haven t made your reservation yet, do it ASAP at (641) We have a block of rooms reserved so mention Nancy Hanshaw. Keeping your Tires Young If you drive your favorite A pretty regularly, sooner or later you are going to need some new tires. If you have checked prices on various brands, you will see the prices haven t fallen. So, it s time to think about what you can do to make those new skins last as long as possible. Here are a couple ideas: Keep the air pressure at 35 pounds If your old tires show uneven wear in front, your A may need front end alignment Your new tires and rims might need balancing 21 rims can have weights glued on the back side of the rim behind the spokes. 19 rims are a little narrower in that area, so the weights are clamped to the back side of the rims Apply a tire dressing to the sidewalls to keep them from drying out and age-cracking Wheel balancing beads are another option. 4 ounces of glass beads in each tire to improve handling and reduce tire wear. (If you try this last option, I d be interested to know how it worked out.) See you down the road enjoying that new tire ride. Don 5
Past Events Flying J - Denny s eat out We had 16 people at the eat out. Food was very good and everyone had a great time. We followed it with a board meeting. Thanks to Denny s for giving us their private room to use. Anne Krueger Pancake Breakfast This report was received from the Millers a bit late for last month s newsletter. We counted 41 attendees. We made about 168 pancakes. We heard from some of those that attended that the food was good and there was plenty of it. I think we can all agree with that. June 6 started with a kind of rainy and threatening morning, but the sun came out just after noon. We had a nice variety of vehicles anyway. There was a good crew of helpers, who were thankful for the club tents. We even had some wedding photos taken in front of the John Deeres. The SkillsUSA kids seemed to have a good time and they had really good sloppy joes. We got a bit of news coverage in the Gretna Breeze and the Omaha World-Herald. You can see lots more photos on our Photobucket site. 6
Past Events Twenty-one Meadowlarks attended the Regional Meet: Bob Benton; Greg, Priscilla, & Julia Bowden; Mike & Marilyn Cahalane; Ed & Susan Dellinger, Charlie & Suzanne Earnest; El & Dot Gertner; Don & Janet Graves; Gayle and Nancy Hanshaw; Dale Jergensen; Rodney & Lucy Lorence; and Bob & Mary McKinney. We showed off our T-shirts at the Welcome Party. The Holiday Inn was a big, but kind of old, convention center in the historic downtown St. Joe area. The ladies had a good time at the Ladies Luncheon. They all won door prizes. Several are wearing hats they made. We did really well at the Car Games: Line up your Axle: El Gertner Second Place Garage Parking: Sue Dellinger First Place Teeter Totter: Ed Dellinger Third Place Parts in the Bag: Don Graves First Place Parts in the Bag: El Gertner Third Place And, of course, the McKinney s took First Place in the People s Choice Commercial Class. There was a really nice photo op at one of the tours. You can see many of the cars in this service station, a video that starred some of our own, and a slideshow with over 400 photos at You can also see a day by day account at blog/ and lots more of our photos in the club Photobucket. 7
Member News Call Mary McKinney ( ) if you have any member news, good or bad, that you would like to share. The only bad news we have heard is that Howard Denker fell off his roof. That was before the June meeting, though, and he made it to the meeting. You might have noticed him moaning and groaning. Here are some pieces of good news: Bruce Rima was promoted to Sergeant in the Omaha Police Department in June. Jeff Graves graduated from ITT Tech in June with a degree in Drafting and Design Technology. Don & Janet Graves celebrated 50 years of marriage in June. No big party, just a family photo session with the kids and grandkids and a family dinner. Hens Nest At our June meeting we started cutting out vest for members that need them. We still have more to do next month. If you need one and you weren't at the meeting, let me know. If you can come to the next meeting, that would be great because you can try on samples for size. Vests will cost $15.00 each to cover the cost of the material and we are checking into having the Chases do the embroidery on the back and what the charges will be for that. Please bring scissors to the next meeting to help cut out more vests.
