1 Outdoor Ethics Training Course Celebrating 103 Years of Scouting This is your personal invitation to attend the 2013 Leave No Trace Trainer Course 2012 The Boy Scouts of America and The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics invites you to become a Leave No Trace Trainer. The Leave No Trace Trainer Course will take place at Falley Scout Reservation, on April 26, 27, 28, The course will begin on Friday evening, 6:30 PM and run through Sunday until approximately 4:00 PM. As a participant, you are required to complete all 16 hours of training to graduate from the course. The fee for this course is $ This covers all course materials and food. Registration is limited to 20 participants, 14 years of age or older, on a first come, first serve basis. To take advantage of this invitation, your registration must be received no later than April 5, After April 5, the Course fee will be $ Registration closes on April 12 Upon successful completion of the Outdoor Ethics Training Course, each participant will qualify as a Leave No Trace Trainer. Those who successfuly complete the course will be able to: Understand, demonstrate, and teach minimium impact techniques to troops, packs, sponsoring organizations, and other community groups. Lead a discussion on outdoor ethics and help others explore their own personal outdoor ethic. Conduct Outdoor Ethics Awareness Workshops (Outdoor Ethics 101). Participate in District and Council Activities and events where Outdoor Ethics(Leave No Trace) can be a useful tool in educating Scouts and Scouters to the need for developing a personal outdoor ethic. Youth Trainers, 14 and older, will qualify for the new Position of Responsibility in the Troop as an Outdoor Ethics Trainer. This POR is authorized for the Eagle Scout Rank. 2 Leave No Trace 1020 SE Monroe Topeka, KS For additional information or questions, please contact one of the instructors listed in the enclosed information Leave No Trace Overview: Leave No Trace (LNT) is an educational organization, endorsed by the National Parks Service, United States Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service and the BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA. One of the primary goals of this organization is to train Master Educators and Trainers who can help teach low-impact outdoor ethics and skills to the general public, Scout Troops, Cub Packs, Venture Crews, or other community organizations. The mission of this course is to train Trainers in both Front Country and Back Country Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics teaching skills. The Trainer Course is a vital component of the nationwide Leave No Trace program. It is a shortened version of the week-long Master Educator Course. Participants receive introductory training in Leave No Trace skills and ethics in a condensed two-day format. The Trainer Course assists the student/participant in learning more about the seven principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for using these low impact skills. These courses are designed for educators, guides, agency employees, Scout Leaders, Scouts, and other outdoor professionals. Successful graduates of the Trainer Course gain the skills to teach Leave No Trace techniques and ethics. Participants learn the concepts of Leave No Trace and prepare to teach the Leave No Trace curriculum in a variety of settings: schools, camps, parks, front country and wilderness areas. Workshop topics include the underlying ethics and seven principles of Leave No Trace: Plan Ahead and Prepare Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces Dispose of Waste Properly Leave What You Find Minimize Campfire Impacts Respect Wildlife Be Considerate of Other Visitors Why Leave No Trace Many of us have taken a pine cone or rock, veered off the trail to dodge mud puddles, gotten too close to wildlife or tossed an apple core into the woods. While

3 these actions may seem harmless at the time, until we learn to reduce our impact, the quality of our outdoor experiences and the recreational resource we enjoy are at critical risk. Also, at risk, is our continued access to wildlands as land management agencies sometimes take restrictive action to protect the resources they manage, unless, of course, education catches up with behavior, and we learn to leave the outdoors as unchanged as possible by our presence. The Solution The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics believes that while these impacts are widespread and the causes are complex, the solution is simple: change behavior through education, research and partnerships, and one person at a time. Leave No Trace is neither a set of rules or regulations; nor, is it simply about remembering exactly what minimum impact skills you can practice in every outdoor situationhow far you should camp from water sources, where to pitch your tent, how to build a minimum impact fire or if you should even build one in the first place. Rather, LNT is first and foremost an attitude and an ethic. Leave No Trace is about respecting and caring for wildlands and doing your part to protect our limited resources and future recreation opportunities. Once this attitude is adopted and the outdoor ethic is sound, the specific skills and techniques become second nature. 4 You will need to choose a topic from the list below to present during the course. Each participant is required to make a minute presentation on some topic related to Leave No Trace. LNT Class Topics The following is a list of teaching session topics you may choose from. Your topic session should be planned to run fifteen to twenty minutes. Resources may be found at Leave No Trace, by Annette McGivney, Soft Paths, by Bruce Hampton and David Cole, the Boy Scout Fieldbook, and the Boy Scout Handbook.
