1 Recommended Clothing and Supplies SENIOR SESSION MUSICAL: o Instrument and Music Stand (label both parts!) o Etude books, and any solo repertoire o Extra strings, rosin, mutes, valve oil, etc. (as applicable) o Plenty of reeds and reed making equipment (as applicable) o Several pencils with soft lead to use during rehearsals and coachings Have everything labeled clearly with your name! Concert Attire: Kinhaven does not have a uniform, but everyone wears full (top and bottom) white clothing for student performances. At least two (2) white outfits are needed. Suggested concert attire: casual white shirts, pants, slacks, shorts, blouses, skirts/simple dresses. White shoes not necessary; photos on our website can be used for reference. Social Events: A nice outfit (shirt & slacks; dress or skirt & blouse) for Saturday night faculty concerts (and for the folk dancing that comes afterwards) Daily Clothing: At all other times, we dress very casually. Some suggestions are: o For Cold Weather: 2 or 3 sweaters (one heavy one), sweatshirts, socks, warm sleepwear, several shirts & jeans. Nights and mornings are chilly be prepared!! o For Hot Weather: shorts, casual slacks or pants, shirts, blouses, T-shirts, cool sleepwear. o Shoes: Sneakers, sandals, etc. but most Kinhavenites prefer bare feet! Laundry is done weekly and returned within two days. It is bundled by cabin groups. - Using indelible ink, label every item (entire last name, plus first initial). - Bring clothespins for hanging wet towels, etc., on lines near each cabin. Bedding: o Sleeping bag or bedding, pillow and pillow cases: Vermont summer nights can be very cold. If you prefer sheets and blankets, bring several warm blankets. The beds/bunks are cot sized; you will need two sets of sheets. Other Supplies: o Bath towels, wash-cloths, beach towel, swimsuit, toilet articles, underwear, bug spray, FLASHLIGHT (for returning to cabin in the evening after rehearsals or folk dancing.) o Rain Gear: To keep both you and your instrument dry on the way to rehearsals, lessons, chamber coaching sessions, concerts, etc. Vermont rains are very wet!! o Stationery, envelopes, stamps, writing materials, books to read. Because personal storage space is scarce we suggest that you use a trunk or footlocker. Trunks can be shipped ahead of time via UPS to await your arrival. For UPS delivery ONLY (Not USPS): 354 Lawrence Hill Road, Weston VT 05161
2 Travel Information 354 Lawrence Hill Road, Weston VT (Not our mailing address see Phone, Mail, and Visitation Guidelines ) By Car: From the West and South--take NY Thruway (I-87) to Albany NY, then Rte 787 N toward Troy and 7 E toward Troy/Bennington. Take Rte 279 E, Bennington Bypass. Take US 7 N to Manchester / Manchester Center, then east to Londonderry on Route 11 (Rte 30 shares the same roadway for a bit). At Londonderry, take Rte 100 north (left at blinking yellow light) for about 6 miles to Weston. Go through Weston, and about 2 miles on the north side of town is Greendale Road. (You will see a Kinhaven sign at this point.) Turn left, crossing a bridge; and in about 100 feet, take an immediate left onto a dirt road, which is Lawrence Hill Road. Go about 1/2 mile to the Kinhaven sign and our main entrance on your right. From the East and North--take I-91 north (or from northern VT it would be I-91 south). This highway is along the eastern border of Vermont. There is an exit onto Route 103 just north of Bellows Falls VT. Go west on Route 103 to Chester VT where Route 103 merges with Route 11. Stay on Route 11 and continue out of Chester a few miles and take a right at the intersection where there is a sign pointing to Andover. The road has no route number, and takes you for about 10 miles through Andover (follow their posted speed limits very, very carefully!) over a mountain and down the mountain (watch out for a sharp curve) into Weston. At the foot of the hill, the road comes to a T with Route 100. Go north (turning right) for about 1 1/2 miles, to Greendale Road. (You will see a sign to Greendale Camping Area and a Kinhaven sign at this point.) Turn left, crossing a bridge; and in about 100 feet, take an immediate left onto a dirt road, which is Lawrence Hill Road. Go about 1/2 mile to the Kinhaven sign and our main entrance on your right. By Bus: The most popular Greyhound Bus route is from New York City to Brattleboro, VT. - For this route, travel on Friday, June 22 rd. - The bus leaves the Port Authority at 5:30 AM, arriving in Brattleboro at 11:15 AM. - Our staff will meet students at the Brattleboro drop-off, and drive them to campus (no charge). - Call to discuss Unaccompanied Children Policies (ages 12-16) with Greyhound. By Plane: There are two options available for those traveling by plane. Albany International Airport (ALB) *Do not to confuse with ABY in Albany, Georgia - Travel on Thursday, June 21 st - Approx. 2 hours from campus - One-way car service from ALB to Kinhaven will be provided for a shuttle fee of $50 per camper. Rutland Regional Airport (RUT) *Receives flights from Logan International (BOS) in Boston, MA, only - Travel on Thursday, June 21 st - Approx. 30 minutes from campus - A staff member will meet students in Rutland (no charge for this pickup). Round-Trip Booking: Kinhaven can also return students to the airport on Sunday, August 5 th (by 4:00 PM, so plan an itinerary that allows plenty of time to check-in) or on Monday (August 6 th ) // $50 shuttle fee to Albany (ALB) Trunks/suitcases can be shipped (in advance) via UPS directly to the Kinhaven campus to await your arrival. Use our street address for UPS: Kinhaven Music School, 354 Lawrence Hill Road, Weston, VT Please schedule items to arrive after June 19 th. We can also ship belongings home at the conclusion of our program. Complete Section IV of the Online Registration to tell us about your travel plans!
