December 2015 President's Message Winter is just about here, and the Model A driving season is behind us. The arrival of cold weather hasn't diminished our club s ability to get together and have fun. On November 21 st, we visited the Union Pacific Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs. After viewing the fabulous historical and modern railroad exhibits, we had a nice lunch at Quaker Steak & Lube, known for its fine automobile and motorcycle-related décor. Our recent eat out at Petrow s was also well-attended, with 28 hungry Meadowlarks getting together for a relaxing dinner. For December, don't forget to bring your Hubley Model As to our next general meeting. We will be discussing Hubleys, and you will have a chance to look at the models others have built while enjoying our traditional December cookies and other treats. Our annual club banquet is also just around the corner. Be sure to make your menu selections and get signed up for this event by December 29th. As in past years, this event promises to be a good time. It looks like our club s 2015 mileage goal of driving a Model A Ford the equivalent distance of around the world at the equator, or 24,901 total miles, will most likely be reached. In celebration of this monumental achievement, we have scheduled a Round the World Pizza Party" on January 17 th. Watch the newsletters for more details. We are also in the early planning stage for several club events to take place during the winter months. The upcoming newsletters will have more information on these activities as well. Meadowlark Model A Ford Club, Omaha, NE Contents: Calendar December Events Durham Museum & Bohemian Café Eat-out Events after December Annual Banquet Round the World Pizza Party Past Events Union Pacific Museum Tech Tip Member News Ads Finally, congratulations to our new vice president/ president-elect Esther Miller, our new secretary Marilyn Cahalane, and new board member Lee Hendrix. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to run for office for next year. Without willing candidates such as you, our club could not continue to function. See you down the road, Greg Bowden December Meeting Don t forget to bring some treats to share. This is kind of a cookie and appetizer pot luck party. Sometimes it is called a cookie exchange, but we don t end up with cookies to take home. It s just for a party at the meeting. If you have a Hubley (or more than one), be sure to bring it/them. It doesn t matter what condition they are in. If you don t know what a Hubley is, see If you don t have a Hubley, maybe this will give you an idea for your Christmas list. Meeting Treats Thanks to Linda Crisman and Jodi Gernandt for the treats at the November meeting. 1

'Round the World Pizza Party tentatively scheduled for January 17th! We are tentatively planning a 'Round the World Pizza Party honoring those who drove their Models As this year and reported their miles to Dale Jergensen, our mileage chairman. Details are still being worked out, but the event is tentatively scheduled for Sunday, January 17th at 5:00 PM at Pizza Ranch. At this point, it appears that our club's 2015 mileage goal of driving our Model As a total of 24,901 miles, or the distance around the world at the equator, is definitely within reach. If you have not yet reported your mileage to Dale, be sure to let him know as soon as possible so we can proceed with the planning for this event. More details will be provided next month, if we reach our goal of driving a Model A around the world. Greg Bowden Christmas at the Mansion An Invitation from Nancy Hanshaw I would like to invite you to attend Christmas at the Mansion at Arbor Lodge to view my collection of Santas. The mansion will be decked out for the holidays from November 21 through December 19. Saturday hours are 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Sunday Hours are 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. My collection includes Santas made from antique chocolate molds & covered with diamond dust; saltware Santas which are blue caused by adding salt during the firing process; Santas designed to reflect the diversity of other countries and many one of a kind Santas. Being allowed to have access to rooms filled with the history of Nebraska and the United States was quite an honor! Arbor Lodge originally was a small log cabin built by J. Sterling Morton and his wife, Caroline, when they moved to Nebraska City so he could become the newspaper editor. The house evolved into a larger farmhouse and eventually their son, Joy, hired an architect who designed and built a 52 room mansion which he and his family used for their summer home. J. Sterling Morton served as Secretary of State and acting governor for the Nebraska Territory as well as U. S. Secretary of Agriculture. He was a proponent of Nebraska agriculture and started Arbor Day in Nebraska. He and wife had two sons, Joy and Paul. Joy owned Morton Salt Company and Paul served as U. S. Secretary of Navy. President Grover Cleveland even stayed at Arbor Lodge! Daytime admission is $7.00 for adults and $4.00 for children (ages 3-12). Evening admission is $10 for adults and $7 for youth. The address is nd Avenue; Nebraska City. There are signs so it is very easy to find if you have never visited. I hope you have time during the holidays to visit Arbor Lodge! 4

Past Events Eat Out at Petrow s We had a great turn out 28 people. A lot of people had some of their great desserts. Just a reminder if you can t make it or if you can come at the last minute, let me know so we have enough seats. Anne (Ed. Note: We did find out that Linda Crisman likes really rare beef, like MOO!, and Esther Miller can t resist ordering a cinnamon milkshake when she sees Bob s strawberry shake being served. ) We have a recommendation for a museum to visit. On our way home from Hershey we stopped at the Iowa 80 Trucking Museum in Walcott, Iowa. It is on the other side of Iowa, about 300 miles from Omaha, so it s a bit more than a Sunday tour. But, if you happen to be traveling along I-80 in that direction, be sure to stop. There are over 60 antique trucks on display in the museum. They also have 304 original petroliana signs all over the walls and 24 vintage gas pumps. They only have one Model A truck (at least on display when we were there), but it s a doozie. It was a US Mail truck in Montana, fitted out with skis on the front and tracks on the back. Ought to be good in the snow. Don & Janet Graves 5

Past Events Union Pacific Museum and Lunch at Quaker Steak & Lube Danny & Julia were fascinated by the telephone with a dial and a receiver. Twelve Meadowlarks toured the Union Pacific Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs on November 21st. For many of us who had not previously visited this museum, it was certainly an eye opener in terms of the quantity and quality of the exhibits. From the planning and construction of the original Transcontinental Railroad through the Golden Age of rail travel, and even up to the modern era, this museum seemed to have it all. Those attending included El Gertner, Dale Jergensen, Ken Grigsby, Barney Deden, Bob Benton, Don, Janet, and Jeff Graves, John and Danny Leddy, and Greg and Julia Bowden. After spending a couple hours looking at all the exhibits, we drove to Quaker Steak & Lube, where we enjoyed a relaxing lunch. Greg B. Interesting Tidbits from UP Museum Displays In 1910, Iowa had 10,500 miles of railroad track, with no town more than 5 miles from a railroad. Council Bluffs had nine depots and 62 passenger trains passing through daily. Sleeping quarters for overnight trip from Chicago to Des Moines cost $2. Railroads shipped vast amounts of livestock and produce, and by the late 1800s, rail transportation had changed the American diet. Readily available fresh fruit, vegetables, and meat replaced wild game and canned and dried foods that had been the mainstay of the 19 century dinner table. Three Meadowlarks came away from the Mystery Tour with more than a good time. Marilyn Cahalane and Jeff Graves won T-Shirts and Don Graves won $25 in Valley Bucks (money to be spent at the participating businesses in Cass County). Hm. Sounds like a bottle of wine plus a couple of glasses at Slattery Vineyard. 6

Tech Tip Trouble Shooting Tips for the Running Model A By Lynn Sondenaa in the Beaver Chapter Ahoooga News June 2014 This newsletter generously states: Other newsletters may reprint articles as long as credit is given to the author and Beaver Chapter Ahoooga News. Let us assume that the Model A was running fine, but then something changed causing it not to purr like a kitten. It might backfire sometimes, or the engine might have a miss. This is a list of problems to consider and check. Point gap Wear can cause a change in the point gap setting. Hard starting or a tendency to buck at low speeds could mean the point gap is too wide. Plugged carburetor jet To do a quick unplug of a carburetor jet without taking the carburetor apart try this method. With engine warm and idling, wear a glove and place your hand over the choke housing to momentarily cut off the air supply. This can help to dislodge a particle of dirt. If covered too long the engine will die. Backfire This could be many things, so here is a list of possibilities. Defective condenser Too rich of a fuel mixture Incorrect float level Manifold air leak by the block Exhaust/muffler leak at the clamp area Too lean of a fuel mixture Backfire going downhill Spark retarded too much Fuel mixture too lean Loss of power going uphill Spark is advanced too far Fuel mixture too lean Incorrect float level Clogged fuel screens at tank/sediment bowl/carburetor Squeaky fan belt A quick fix is to apply hand bar soap to the belt. Next, would be to apply door-ease. Old timers used glycerin. The best fix is to determine why the fan belt is squeaking. Is the generator/alternator pulley out of alignment? Is the fan belt old and worn out? Low speed shimmy Tires not inflated to 35 psi Loose wheel lug nuts Loose wheel bearings Worn wheel bearings Worn king pins Tie rod or drag link loose Worn tie rod or drag link balls 7

Karan, and her husband, Jerry, have been Meadowlark members since They were newsletter editors and were instrumental in our first Regional Meet in 1976 as well as helping with many other activities. Karan was a very accomplished needlewoman. She led the ladies in several small activities that we did at meetings (kind of like our current Hens Nest ) and helped us make a couple of embroidered Model A quilts for our first couple of Regional Meets. Karan had been treated for cancer for three years. Our sympathy to Jerry and the McManis family. El and Dot did it again. A lady contacted us to see if someone in our club would help her surprise her 94 year old father for his birthday. The father had owned a Model A Tudor earlier in his life and still talked about it frequently. El and Dot stepped up. They arranged with the daughter that she would take her father out for a ride and just happen to drive by their house where they would have their Tudor sitting out where it would be seen. Then, they would stop and be offered a ride. It worked and the father and daughter enjoyed the ride immensely. 8
