February, 2017 C&O HS Links C&O E8 No with No. 6, The eastbound FFV, at Newport, Ky., in At the opening of the period covered in the book there were six mainline name trains: east and west sets of Nos. 1 & 2, The George Washington, 3 & 6 The FFV, and 4 & 5, the Sportsman. The all mail and express trains had been eliminated in 1958 and all their business had been transferred to the name trains, giving them long, heavy consists. But, the passenger problem was getting worse and in October, 1962 Nos. 6 and 5 were discontinued. Nos. 3 & 4 would go in May 1968, leaving only Nos. 1 & 2 to last until Amtrak Day May 1, Note that an MU connection plug has been added to the nose so that units may operate nose-to-nose. This was necessary after 1958 when three units were needed between Ashland and Charlottesville. (Gene Huddleston photo, C&OHS Collection, COGH 196) Welcome This months electronic newsletter has a selection of photos taken on the C&O in the period. This is to advertise our newly announced book Chesapeake & Ohio - The Decades of Change: cincinnatichapternrhs.org (if you are not listed here and would like to be, please let me know. I expect this list to grow, and apologies to any group I have missed.) Unofficial Forum: groups.yahoo.com/group/ chesapeakeohiorailway/ How You Can Support Us: Join, Renew, or Make a Donation Today!
1981. The new book is hoped for by late July, but we NEED ADVANCE RESERVATIONS. We need to have about 200 reservations in order to be able to publish this new work, so please send in your order today! Don't wait, because the book will be delayed or not published unless we have the advance orders. This is the first hardbound full-length book with color throughout for many years, and we hope it will be well received. Its text tells the complete story of the years from the B&O affiliation, through the failed N&W merger, and leading up to CSX. It does not include data or photos from the CSX period. This is a complicated story and one can easily be lost in the myriad of details about the mergers. However, we have tried to distill this down to the essentials. The point is to make these negotiations, hearings, and operations as clear as possible in one short piece and at the same time explaining changes in actual operations on C&O, fully illustrating it with color photos of trains, structures, cars, and people. We are still very interested in your ideas for articles to be used both in this medium (short pieces) and for use in the magazine. Fortunately, we received a number of good articles that will appear in future magazines, however we are still looking for additional material to put in the waiting file. Any of the images shown can be purchased as glossy prints sized to your specification, or as high resolution digital downloads, or digital files on CD. 3 Color Album! The following are some photos that will be used in our new all-color book Chesapeake & Ohio - The Decades of Change: See the advertisement below. GP9 No at the Cabin Creek Branch engine terminal, Cane Fork, W. Va. ca This photo shows change very well with the old coaling station in the background and the new diesel fuel tank in the foreground. (Gene Huddleston photo, C&OHS Collection, COGH 1012)
All the C&O's branch line passenger trains were gone by the beginning of the period, with only the Rail Diesel Car (RDC) powered Big Sandy train between Ashland and Elkhorn City, Ky. The two RDCs often carried a full express car for the considerable mail and express business that remained on this line until its discontinuance in 164. (Gene Huddleston photo, C&OHS Collection, COHS 10060)
The short-lived Zebra paint scheme on C&O F7 No working on the B&O at Seymour, Ind. in April, This scheme was, in fact, the standard for C&O locomotives repainted in It was quickly shelved in favor of the solid blue scheme (or blue with yellow ends) with which we are familiar. By the date of this photo most C&O F7s had been shifted to work on B&O to help that road with its motive power shortage. (Tom Smart photo, C&OHS Collection, COHS 10061)
The old depot at Columbia, Va. was built by the Richmond & Alleghany RR (merged into C&O in 1890) and still had an agent and looked well maintained in this July 27, 1969 photo. By the end of the following, decade small stations such as this would be all but gone, their agencies closed and the buildings razed. The Columbia depot was moved and preserved. (T. W. Dixon, Jr. photo, C&OHS Collection, COHS 18412)
GP38 No heads an eastbound train at NC Cabin, Ashland, Ky. with ARMCO Steel's giant blast furnace in the background in December, (Gene Huddleston photo, C&OHS Collection, COHS 20264) In November, 1978 GP30 No and a GP9 power a local freight at Logan, Ohio, in November, The GP30s were the first of the second generation diesels that C&O began acquiring in They lasted through most of the 20 years examined by the book. 11 E8 No and mate lead westbound train No. 5/47, the Sportsman, out of Charlottesville, Va.'s Union Station, just crossing the Sothern Railway's Washington-Atlanta main line ca In that era, C&O trains made two stops in Charlottesville, one at C&O's own depot on Main Street and a second at Union Station, near UVA. Added interest here is that the RPO, three cars back, is still in green paint. (C&OHS Collection, COHS 21452)
C&O's Santa Fe types were the only type of steam engine that came entirely second hand, and in this case third-hand. B-l class No at Alexandria, Va.'s Potomac yard on Oct. 29, The locomotive was originally built for Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1919, then was purchased by Hocking Valley in 1920 and was classed F-l. It became part of the C&O fleet with the HV merger in It was the only one of the 12 locomotives in this class that had the Elesco feedwater heater "brow" at the top of the smokebox. Most of the s were used east of Charlottesville on the Washington SD/SR to Alexandria, and on the Piedmont SD to Richmond. They also ran over the Mountain SD to Charlottesville frequently. (C&OHS Collection, COHS 21453) The huge Handley, W. Va. Railroad YMCA building the way it looked at the end of its life in The Queen Anne style architecture was used on most of the YMCAs built along the C&O in the 1890s. The story of the Y and C&O is long and fruitful. One complemented the other, and C&O supported the Y by building and maintaining the structures, while the YMCA organization ran them. These were ideal for bunkhouses for C&O crews. (C&OHS Collection, COHS 21454)
The following article is reprinted by the December, 1955 issue of Tracks, C&O's employee and Publicity magazine, and tells the story of how C&O's close relationship with the railroad department of the YMCA under President M. E. Ingalls in 1890.

In this 1956 photo operator Helen Lair is working the hump tower at Clifton Forge. When the Clifton Forge terminal was enlarged in 1923 a hump was installed. It remained in operation until The hump was never automated with car retarders, so brakemen boarded individual cars and cuts of cars at the tower and rode them down to the proper track, applying brakes by hand. This was a labor-intensive operation that was complicated by having to move the brakeman back up to the hump tower. (C&O Ry. photo, C&OHS Collection, CSPR )
This March 15, 1969 photo shows the hump riders' motor car carrying brakeman back to the tower after riding cars down to the appropriate tracks. These cars were called "Hump Motors" and where lettered HM-1, etc. We don't know how many there were, but we believe that one was preserved in the collection of the Old Dominion Chapter, NRHS in Richmond. The C&OHS had four tables at the 2017 Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show at Springfield, MA the last weekend in January. Society volunteers at the tables included Doug Buchanan, Bill Stone, Dale Perry, Pam Catlin and Rob Catlin. Many Society members were present at the show again this year, including Dan Navarre (see picture - River Raisin Models, 30 years at Amherst.) Doug Buchanan had a new 8-foot table banner printed for us and he made the PVC pipe framework with feet to clamp on the table top. The banner is now stored in the office at the Hays Watkins Archives Building in Clifton Forge (that's Bill Stone manning our booth.) Edaville No.11 (Porter, 1925) allowed people the chance to pull the whistle cord on a hot steamer. More pictures will follow in the Historical Magazine. Highlights of this year's show: It was another outstanding show with 19,541 at the gate & 23,291 in total attendance. Live steam this year with Edaville No. 11 whistling off and running outside on feet of 2-foot gauge track. The Mt. Washington Cog Railway brought No. 1, Peppersass, for display during her 150th birthday anniversary.
50+ enormous layouts, 450+ vendors (all major vendors were present again this year.) Mark your calendars for next year's show: Saturday, 27 January 2018 and Sunday, 28 January Clinics start on Thursday. We are working on an Amtrak-related charter train trip from Newport News to Springfield - up on Friday and home on Sunday. Details to follow. Rob Catlin COHS Chairman
Some Flat Car Loads!
C&O flat car No loaded with Massey-Ferguson tractors. Flat cars don't get much attention by modelers, but they can be very interesting based on what types of loads are used. The car was part of C&O series These 54-foot, 70-ton cars were built by Greenville Steel Car Co. for the Pere Marquette in 1942 as PM Nos , and when PM was merged, C&O simply added the numeral "2" to the front of the PM number. The photo was taken somewhere in Michigan, probably Okemos, by Gene Huddleston in (C&OHS Collection, COHS 21477)

As I read them over, they were full of C&O information that was very interesting. They were not printed like the magazine quality we have today, but that did not matter... I just wanted more information about a railroad I grew up watching & wondering about. I never lived near the tracks, but most of my relatives lived beside the C&O mainline in Kenova, Huntington, Hurricane, Teays, & St. Albans. I did have a copy of the book "C&O Power" but soon realized the COHS could help me learn far more about this great railroad. When I was in the 6th grade I wanted to make a school report on railroading. After my dad heard this he called a friend who was an executive for the C&O in the Coal Exchange Building in Huntington. We met in his office on a Saturday and then was treated with a personal tour of the Russell, Kentucky yards including the control tower at the Fitzpatrick hump yard, with cars squeaking through the retarders and a high speed manifest rolling underneath. I knew there were trains rolling past my family locations, but after visiting Russell, I then realized how much more I was missing. This is exactly what the COHS does for us as it's historians have given so much of their great knowledge, time and work and shared so much over the years, that for everything learned gives us more questions, wondering what's around the next bend and over the next hill. Thank you to all members & historians for all you have done over the years. We would never be the same without The Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society. COHS Member What is the personal connection column? It is a column created for the C&O electronic newsletter that
describes a member/customer's personal connection to the C&O Historical Society. We're interested to know how you found out about the Society, came to join it, and what it has meant to you over the years. Why is this column important and what will it do? It will give individuals the chance to share their personal experiences, tell about the people that they have known, and the friendships they have shared. We hope that this column will be interesting reading, and will help to personalize our group that is so widespread. I hope we will also be able to explain how the Society's services and use of its collections have helped people in their hobbies and other pursuits, and finally, how important the Chesapeake & Ohio Historical Society truly is. -Brandy Dudley Please!!!!
