Page 2 I President s Message April 11, 2010 was very proud to see 36 North Georgia Chapter members and guests in attendance at the Winder Golden Corral Restaurant for our April chapter meeting. Hopefully we re gaining new members, Charlie and Hellen Attaway from Oxford, Georgia. They have just recently acquired a 1951 Champion Starlight Coupe. The SE Zone Meet Committee is pressing along with necessary duties to make this a memorable Zone meet. In the near future we will be asking for volunteers to help with certain tasks and responsibilities to make the meet enjoyable for everyone attending. Please make your hotel reservations soon and send in your meet registrations to Charlotte & Bill Delli. It was great to see Charleen and Billy Carey. I know it must be difficult for Charleen to get up and around and she says the mending process has been very slow. Keep up the good work Charleen! Also keep Carolyn Sikes in your thoughts as she is recovering from surgery. Editor s note: Charleen went back into the hospital April 14 th to replace her stent and to treat some infections that arose. We will keep you apprised as to her progress. The 50/50 drawing was won by Jim Carto. I m sure he ll put that money toward his Avanti s R-4 conversion. As Larry the Cable Guy would say.. Git-R-Done!!! The door prizes were some small potted plants and custom made Studebaker Bird Baths, guaranteed not to rust out. Please remember that we have a tour planned on May 22 nd at the Milt Robson Museum near Gainesville. Everyone please pay close attention to the Up-coming Events column in our Hillholder. Between this column and the flyers that Chris publishes, there s ALWAYS someplace to drive your Studebaker and show it off. This is how we garner attention and attract new members. Drag em out, clean em up and take em to the nearest show!!! Trust me: you ll get a lot of thumbs-ups going down the road. Happy Studebakering, Dan Miller The High Museum in Atlanta features an exhibition, The Allure of the Automobile, running through June 20. The show features a number of European and American cars, ranging from the 1930 s to the 1960 s, that represent high points of design and engineering. The Studebaker family of marques is represented by a 1933 Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow. More information at

Page 4 North Georgia Chapter, Studebaker Drivers Club Meeting Minutes April 11, 2010 President Dan Miller opened the meeting. Thanks to everyone who joined us this afternoon. (Thanks also to Dan and Barbara for hosting us today in conjunction with Buddy and Dot Hunt.) We welcomed our visitors and guests, and announced birthdays, anniversaries, and those we need to keep in our thoughts and prayers. Dan has spoken with Marvin Sikes, who says that Carolyn is progressing ahead of schedule in the recovery from her back surgery. Carolyn cannot wait to get behind the wheel of her Avanti, which she has named John and Dorothy, in honor of its previous owners the Browns. We were so pleased to have Charleen Carey with us today. Charleen says the recovery from her kidney-related surgery is taking time, but she is definitely getting there. Editor s note: Charleen went back into the hospital April 14 th to replace her stent and to treat some infections that arose. We will keep you apprised as to her progress. Barbara provided some updates on the Southeast Zone Meet. Planning for the meet is going well overall. The meet logo is almost finalized; we have 25 room reservations to date (we committed 50 room nights to the hotel); Buddy Hunt is working to get access to the property adjoining the hotel for our car display area. Charlotte Delli has three meet registrations so far. Of the first 50 registrations we receive, one of those registrants will receive something special, so please complete the form in The Hillholder and return it to Charlotte right away. Charlotte will maintain separate accounting and reporting for all the funds involved with the zone meet. She also will send a registration confirmation number by mail to all people who register. Charlotte also presented the Treasurer s Report; a copy will be in the newsletter. We now have 58 memberships, including those who joined so far this year and also reflecting the eight members who did not renew. Jim Nichols had registration forms for the Georgia Mountain Classics Car Show being held in Blue Ridge on May 8. Several chapter members won awards there last year. Dan reminded members about the invitation to tour Milton Robson s car museum on May 22nd. More information will be in The Hillholder. Ed Burris attended the Middle Tennessee Chapter car show in Shelbyville this weekend, and won a first place award with his Avanti. Congratulations also to Bill and Doris Cope, who won first place awards for two of their Studebaker watches at the meet. Ed also mentioned the Eastern North Carolina Chapter s Spring Fling, which Weldon Critcher will be hosting at his home in Boone, North Carolina on June 26. See the events section of The Hillholder for contact information. Tom Elliott wanted to recognize and thank Dan, who along with Richard Forgay of the South Georgia chapter spent a day helping Tom get his 1982 Avanti ready for the road. Tom likewise thanked Lenny Major for spending a day with Tom to prepare his Starlight coupe for its new owner. In going through his treasure trove of old car goodies, Tom ran across a key fob from the Boomershine Pontiac dealership that was located in Atlanta. Tom passed this on to Alan Ziglin, so Alan could use it with the 1967 Grand Prix convertible that is pictured in last month s newsletter. (continued next page)
Page 5 Tom saw a black 1950 Champion 4-door parked at an auto shop near them in the Fayetteville area. The owner is open to offers; contact Tom if you are interested and he will get you the name of the shop. Guest Hellen Attaway drew for door prizes. Charleen Carey, Bill Delli, and Andy Kite won bird baths crafted by Dan from Studebaker wheel covers. Ben Alspach, Marsha Byrd, and Doris Cope each took home a plant. Jim Carto won the 50/50 drawing, splitting the $93 pot with the chapter. Maureen Elliott told us that she and Tom attended the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition s unveiling of its new home for the Jeremy Williams family of Pine Mountain Valley (southeast of LaGrange, northeast of Columbus). Jeremy Williams was profiled last year in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for his continued dedication in coaching the Greenville High School football team while facing his own battle with ALS and meeting the needs of a son with spina bifida. The episode airs Sunday May 16 on the ABC network. Watch closely and you might catch a glimpse of Tom and Maureen! Dunwoody Fourth of July Parade (this is a significant change from our discussion at the meeting): This year the parade will be held on Monday July 5 th, starting at 9:30 AM. Unlike last year, we cannot enter as a club and run our cars all together in the parade. Therefore, Alan cannot register participating members as a group. If you want to register individually: 1. Visit 2. Under the calendar tab, click 4 th of July Parade 3. Scroll down past the flag and the sponsor opportunities, and you will see a box that says you can register for the parade right here. 4. A member who does not have internet access but wishes to enter the parade may contact Chris Collins for a paper copy of the registration form. Our next meeting will be Sunday May 2 nd, at Penn s Restaurant in Monroe. Directions will be in The Hillholder; no need to RSVP. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned. See you next month at Penn s! Please Keep in Your Thoughts and Prayers Charleen Carey, who had to re-enter the hospital because of some complications from last month s surgery. Carolyn Sikes, who continues to recover from back surgery last month.
Page 6 The Mailbox To the Studebaker Family: Thanks so much for all the lovely cards, phone calls, and especially all the prayers that were said during my surgery and recovery. 7 Page 7 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Rebecca J. Bonham, Executive Director Studebaker National Museum Mourns Loss of Trustee and Volunteer Phil Brown South Bend, Ind. The Board of Trustees and Staff of Studebaker National Museum are saddened by the sudden passing of Museum trustee and volunteer Phil Brown. Brown died Sunday, April 11, when his 1967 Avanti went out of control on Dragoon Trail. He was returning home from a meeting of the Pioneer Automobile Association at the Museum. We re shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Phil Brown, said Mark McDonnell, President, Board of Trustees, Studebaker National Museum. He was a man of great stature within the Studebaker family and the 12,000 members of the international Studebaker Drivers Club. He has been the face of the Museum to so many across the country for many years. McDonnell added, I have lost a very good friend who was a fine, fine man. A museum trustee and volunteer for 25 years, Brown actively served on the museum s Collections Committee as project manager for the restoration of several vehicles including the 1947 Woody Station Wagon, 1928 Commander and 1966 Cruiser. The 1928 Commander was restored for the Museum to participate in the 1990 Great American Race. The 1966 Cruiser was the last vehicle produced by the Studebaker Corporation in Canada. He represented the Museum at many car shows throughout the country. I have known Phil for the past 27 years and he was part of the fabric here at the Studebaker National Museum, said Rebecca J. Bonham, executive director. Always an ambassador for the history of the Studebaker Corporation and the role it played in our community, Phil was instrumental in garnering support from the international Studebaker Driver s Club to build our new Museum. I will miss him terribly. In addition, Brown and his wife Cindy served as the international Studebaker Drivers Club Meet Chairpersons in 1983 and 2007, and he chaired the Studebaker Drivers Club Capital Cost Fund Committee. He was an active member and served as past president of the Pioneer Auto Association, the Antique Studebaker Club and Avanti Owners Association International. He served on the board of directors of the S. Ray Miller Car Museum in the early 1990s and was the chairperson of the local Studebaker Swap Meet for many years. Brown and his wife were honored by the Studebaker National Museum in 2008 with the Spirit of Studebaker Award for his commitment to the Museum and recognized by the South Bend/Mishawaka Convention and Visitors Bureau in 2008 with a Live the Legends Tourism Partnership Award for his role as meeting planner for the 2007 Studebaker Drivers Club international meet in South Bend. He was a 40-year employee of Ave Maria Press and owner of Phil s Studebaker Parts.

(5/2010) STUDEBAKER MEDIA This is a 99 page book based on the articles of the same name that appeared in Turning Wheels in the early 1990s and which won the SDC's Churchill Award for Best Article, Non-Paid. The book contains all the material from the original series, which ran for a year and a half in The Hillholder, and not only replaces some material edited out for the TW series, but has updates and several new items that were written after the TW series was published. "Some Thoughts" is aimed at the first-time restorer, but will be of value to the more experienced; it doesn't try to be a "how to restore a car book", but gives you a look at the decision-making processes, tools, spaces and basic skills you'll need to do a restoration, and will provide a framework to help you structure your project. There are several chapters of Studebaker-specific advice. In the chapter devoted to engine rebuilding, I've tried to describe a step-by-step process that anybody can follow, and I ve tried to include tips I've picked up in building 60+ engines. I've received many compliments on the engine chapter, and I'm glad to finally be able to get it in print. Some Thoughts on Restoring a Studebaker is available for $22.50 USD, plus $4 for handling and postage, for a total of $26.50 to US addresses. Canadian orders add $6.50 USD for postage, total $29.00 USD. To order a second book in the same order, add an additional $3 ($4 USD for Canadian orders). For Australia and Europe, shipping is $12, total $34.50 USD paid by PayPal only. The easiest way to purchase (and only way if you are in Australia or Europe) is to PayPal the appropriate amount to me at, and mention Some Thoughts in the remarks section. Otherwise, if you live in the US or Canada, send your name, mailing address and a check or USPS money order for $26.50 ($29.00 USD bank draft for Canadian buyers) to: Chuck Lampman 4141 Lynette Ct. Kennesaw, GA If mailing payment, please me to notify me that the check is coming so I can set one aside for you, or get some more printed. (I try not to keep too big an inventory because they are expensive to stock.) (5/2010)
