1 2015 Calendar of Events CULTURAL LANDSCAPES & THEIR INFLUENCE ON THE ARTS This year s theme for Heritage Preservation Month focuses on the cultural landscapes that inspired artists who visited, lived, and practiced their art in New Mexico. Defined by the World Heritage Committee as cultural properties that represent the combined works of nature and man, cultural landscapes fall into three general categories. Ethnographic landscapes are identified by strong artistic, religious, or cultural associations with natural elements or geologic formations; manmade cultural landscapes can include parks, gardens, or other landscapes constructed for aesthetic reasons, and are often associated with monumental or religious buildings; organically evolved landscapes illustrate social, economic, and/or administrative forces and their responses to the natural landscape. All three types can evolve over a period of time and either end abruptly or continue to play a role today. New Mexico has been home to and inspired many artists, and the homes of some of them, including Luis Jimenez, Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth are newly listed on the National Register of Historic Places, joining the previously listed homes and studios of Georgia O Keefe, Eanger Irving Couse, and Joseph Henry Sharpe. This year's poster depicts Chimney Rocks near Abiquiu and the home and studio of Georgia O'Keeffe. She interpreted this landscape in several paintings. (Photograph: Robert V. Fletcher; poster design: Tom Drake.)

2 The 2015 Calendar of Events has been compiled by the New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance in partnership with HPD and numerous government, education, and private organizations and individuals who are providing various opportunities for New Mexicans and visitors alike to have fun and learn something new about New Mexico s unique heritage during this national celebration of Heritage Preservation Month. Let it be the impetus for spring road trips to New Mexico cities, towns, parks, state and national monuments, pueblos, and historic sites. The Calendar includes descriptions, locations, and directions to events. When planning to attend a Calendar event, be prepared to deal with the elements, from long hours in the sun to possible wind and maybe even rain. Sunscreen, good walking shoes, and water are critical; contact event coordinators with any questions. Enjoy!
