Editor s Notes Happy New Year! I hope you have all recovered from the festive season, including our U3A Christmas Social and are ready to resume our wide and ever-expanding range of U3A activities. Remember, if there is an activity you would like to see added, just contact a committee member. This Newsletter is going out with the membership renewal forms for 2015/16. While your current membership runs until March we are encouraging you to return the fully completed forms early, to ease the burden on the Membership Secretary, who has to administer over 500 renewals. The cut off date for is the end of March. This month s Newsletter, in addition to the reports and news from our interest groups, includes a list of contacts for all groups. Keep it for future reference. Some members are puzzled by the pattern and nature of our monthly Newsletters, so let me explain: The 28 page colour folded newsletters, such as this current one, appear four times a year (January, April, July and October) In this format they cannot be ed. An interim black & white A4 Newsletter appears in all the other months and is also sent out by to all members, where we have their e-addresses. Both types of newsletter are also available at the monthly meetings, at Radcliffe Library, from Grange Hall reception and other shops and outlets in the village. Look out for it. I hope our U3A helps you enjoy 2015 Rodney Fogg Radcliffe on Trent U3A Newsletter 2 Jan 2015

News WHY ARE WE WAITING? Tension mounted as we waited for our guest speaker; Charles Hanson, local auctioneer and TV personality. And we waited and we waited. There are always advantages to any challenge; Bill explained how to set up a new interest group. We are always looking for people to have a go at creating new groups to continue to make our U3A an exciting place. After exhausting our repertoire of notices our guest finally arrived but it was worth the wait. In his usual chaotic and lively manner, he regaled tales of his life and work. His passion and enthusiasm for antiques came over clearly. My favourite story was the sale of the original glove puppet of Sooty for 3,100. Apparently Sweep and Soo arrived in the saleroom, complete with water pistol, to buy back their ancestor. The sale led to a deluge of sooty puppets on the market. Unfortunately for their owners the average price of sale ended at 5. Charles explained that he has filmed episodes of Bargain Hunt while Tim Wonnacott was occupied with Strictly Come Dancing. However, that turned out to be a shortlived adventure for Tim. Charles is obviously not a private person. He told us of his devastation at being diagnosed with testicular cancer and the sadness at the death of his baby. He and his family have been burgled several times; obviously a difficult few years for him. This charming character kept us spell-bound with his stories of the saleroom. Apparently, the items selling well at the moment are old cameras but he advised us to keep Radcliffe on Trent U3A Newsletter 4 Jan 2015

our brass items for a future come-back. Well, I m off to look for antiques in the attic and hunt for bargains. MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL The time has now come for you to renew your membership for the Year The membership form is enclosed with this newsletter. Remember that you must belong to the U3A to belong to any groups and you must also have your membership card with you, as group leaders have been asked to check them. Please return the form promptly. 7 exhibition visited by 1650, a week of events attended by 700 and now a book of the exhibition with a print run of 400 sold out. What was probably most satisfying, though, was the week in November when ten members of our team worked with children in the Junior School. We spent time in each class talking about the war and its impact on the village and answering their often probing questions. We were all so impressed by the behaviour and interest of the children and the commitment of the teachers. The work they produced over the week was stunning and a tribute to the school. I m sure that we of the Third Age learned as much as those children of the First. Dave Barton. TRIPS AND OUTINGS 2015 We have arranged the following trip for Please note tickets will be available only from the Outings Table at monthly meetings and cannot be reserved in advance. Please remember to bring your U3A card when booking. A visit to Jodrell Bank has been arranged for Wednesday 25 th March, 2015 leaving Radcliffe at 8:30am. 8 SLEEP MEMORY WORKSHOP The regional U3A has sent us this information. Are you interested in getting involved in this project? (The WW1 project started like this)this is an opportunity to get your teeth into an academic piece of work. If you are interested please contact me for more details: Ann Keen At the review session of the Sleep memory workshop, there was a suggestion that we might run a Shared Learning project. The proposed project which we have just discussed with the University of Lincoln. A U3A Shared Learning Project (SLP) requires certain criteria to be adhered to: U3A members must work with other U3As or an outside body The project must have a standalone element, it cannot just be part of a wider project, without an identified outcome It needs to be genuine research not just reporting on taking part It must have a clearly defined time frame, members need to know and work towards landmark deadlines Research findings must be shared, eg a published booklet, an event to display research findings The aim of the proposed Shared Learning Project is to produce a Questionnaire which can be used to determine sleep quality in older adults, a topic very much under discussion at the moment. The project would involve members conducting a number of semistructured interviews. The content of the interviews would then be transcribed and analysed and the results would be pulled together to form the final Questionnaire. Training in conducting the interviews will be organised by the University in January and the interviews would be conducted between mid-january and mid- February. The 2015 East Midlands Conference is seen as a good opportunity to produce a display board outlining the results of the project. Radcliffe on Trent U3A Newsletter 8 Jan 2015

We would also disseminate the results through the Regional website and nationally through the National SLP Coordinator. We need to work within a tight time frame as the University students involved will also be sitting exams. If you are interested in participating (and would like to include other U3A members) please let me know soonest so that work can start to prepare for the project. Kind regards Michaela Notts network U3A News from the Groups Art Together Group For further information contact Joe on or burrowsjw@ntlworld.com Book Appreciation Group will meet on January 21st 2015 at 2pm hopefully at The Manvers to discuss William Woodruff's 'The Road to Nab End'. 11 . Creative Writing Group (New for 2015) The idea for my suggestion has stemmed from my interest in a Group named Peak Writers who meet in Bakewell, Derbyshire. I moved to Radcliffe-on-Trent a year ago and feel that this is a very enjoyable and stimulating way of self-expression. Writing about a place, an object, a building, a place or a life experience, in short essay form is a relatively personal view which may be shared at a meeting. This would be for amateurs and anyone wishing to gain another social experience. It would be helpful to request an expression of interest and the meetings would most likely be held on a Tuesday am in the centre of the village. If anyone would like to chat about this at any time, please let me know. My is Helen Wallace : or helenrose.wallace@btinternet.com Criminology & Criminal Justice Group (New for 2015) Starting in January 2015, on the last Tuesday morning of the month between 2 and 4 p.m. I have provisionally booked The Rainbow Room, at St. Mary s Church. Areas to be covered will include causal criminality, victimology, courts and sentencing options, community and prison disposals, risk management, rehabilitation and treatment. Plus any other suggestions from the group. As this subject will also expect a level of group participation, I will be looking at 12 participants, but would hope to run this as a four session programme, to be repeated throughout the year if popular. There will be a small charge for room hire of 2 per person, and I will have a display table at the January Open Meeting to take names and discuss the course in further detail Radcliffe on Trent U3A Newsletter 11 Jan 2015

In the meantime, if you think you would be interested, you can contact me, Victoria Hurst, online at or call on Cycling Group The Radcliffe on Trent U3A Cycling group began its activities in April, Since then the 13 members of the group have between them undertaken 14 rides mainly in Nottinghamshire but visiting Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. Our longest ride was 30 miles, but over the year we averaged about 20 miles per ride. Points of interest we encountered included the highest point in Nottinghamshire (allegedly), the most haunted building in Leicestershire (reputedly), the largest and oldest dovecote in Nottinghamshire (believably), and what we decided was the hilliest former railway in England (the Five Pits Trail). In devising our rides, we are fortunate that the Vale of Belvoir is criss-crossed by quiet roads. The widening of the A46 has improved cycle access to the Vale. The vale s roads and the Grantham Canal have formed the basis of several of our rides. We are also fortunate in being close to several multiuser trails. These trails have been constructed from disused mineral and passenger railway lines, and are traffic free. So with a bit of a commute, we have been able to undertake rides that have included the Cloud Trail (just South of Derby), the Phoenix Trails near Hardwick Hall, and the Southwell and Newark Trails, as well as a cycle trail into Lincoln. The wider Sherwood Forest region, including Clumber Park, Sherwood Pines, Vicar Water, and Edwinstowe has some excellent off-road cycling on good surfaces in picturesque surroundings. These areas are linked by the traffic free National Cycle Network route 6, and rides linking several of these areas were undertaken. With Radcliffe on Trent U3A Newsletter 12 Jan 2015

the use of the Southwell Trail and the Bilsthorpe Trail, we have been able to access some of these areas from as close as Farnsfield. Is there anything left for use to do in this area? Well the Vale of Belvoir is a rich source of rides, so there plenty of routes we can do there; we have not fully explored the Phoenix trails; we have yet to use the Trentside path to travel west of Nottingham. Further afield there is a cycle trail heading east from Lincoln to Boston a section of that could be used as the basis of a circular route, we ve hardly touched Leicestershire & Rutland, and there are several possible routes in the Peak District. So plenty of cycling possibilities for the group in At the beginning of December, six members of the Cycling Group set out from Thurgarton. The planned ride was to take in the villages of Goverton, Bleasby, and Morton, to skirt the southern fringe of Southwell and then return to Thurgarton via Westhorpe and Halam. The initial few miles of this ride were quite flat and we would have made good time bar for some bad luck at the level crossings. At the Bleasby crossing we had to wait for a train to pass, the Morton Crossing was closed for maintenance, and at the Fiskerton crossing we again had to wait for another train. On a line that is not particularly busy we thought that this was bad luck it should have been a warning to us. Incidentally, on the Bleasby/Morton section of the ride we passed Shale Lane and Gravelly Lane. In view of the proposed gravel extraction locally and the shale gas extraction nationally (neither particularly popular) we felt the Parish Council might consider changing the names of these lanes. Anyway back to the ride. Nearer Southwell the ride got a lot hillier, and after an exciting downhill section we Radcliffe on Trent U3A Newsletter 13 Jan 2015

climbed out of Westhorpe to cross the Southwell to Oxton road. Unfortunately not all of the party got over one of the group slipped and fell, landing on his hip. It must have been a nasty crack because he was unable to move and remained in the middle of the road. An ambulance and the police were summoned. In the meantime the rest of the group moved to direct the traffic and ensure that the casualty was kept as comfortable as possible until the ambulance arrived I was very impressed with the way the group took control of the situation. After the ambulance and casualty had gone, a chastened group made its way back to Thurgarton and then to Radcliffe. More seriously, the injury required surgery and a partial hip replacement. As I finish typing this rather sad report, the best news I can give is that the patient is now recovering at home and in good spirits. Contact David on or davehood49@gmail.com Family History Discussion Group Our group of 10 or so, which meets at 2.00 pm on the third Thursday of every month in St Mary's Church Hall, continues to enjoy finding more about our own and others' family history. Even after three years we still find plenty to discuss, aided by increasing amounts of information appearing on-line from both free and subscription-only sites. The Discussion Group is likely to increase in size from January as a result of introductory sessions on family history research held in the autumn. Provisional dates for the Discussion Group in 2015 are 15 January, 19 February, 19 March, 16 April and 21 May. Needlework Group We have decided to use the yarn [that is not suitable for young babies] which was donated to us, for scarves, hats and blankets for older children and adults. The mohair and chunky wool can be combined to make a warm, comfortable fabric, without taking too long to knit. I have contacted the Police Charity shop at Bingham, and they are interested in taking items for groups in Bulgaria, etc. Also, the African region has many people with under-nourishment problems, who need these as they are often cold. We have patterns for these, and anyone interested may contact me for further information. Our QMC Project is still going well and thank you for all your contributions. More wool is available, if you are running short. Our meetings are on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at my house, the next is on 13th January from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
