3 FROM THE DARKSIDE Dave and Lisa Bachman (505) We all find time to do what we really want to do. William Feather I look out the window At the end of the day Reflecting on the miles That brought us this way. We rode in the rain The sun also shone On the asphalt ribbon That took us back home. Our sisters and brothers Shared the journey They had our back We knew not to worry. Together we rode The miles flew by We share this love Motorcyclist till we die. Fire up your scoot Your mind will be freed Join us on the road It s just what you need. DLB Sometimes we need to do what we want, instead of what we need to do. Whatever it is can probably wait. I have never seen a gravestone that said I wish I had spent more time at work. Take some time and live your life, because you only live once. If you do it right though, once is enough. 4 ASSISTANT CHAPTER DIRECTOR Tom Brewer (505) The ride for US 191 Saturday August 2 nd, seven brave souls headed west for Springerville, AZ. There were four Harleys and two Goldwing trikes. It must have looked like the two trikes were being escorted with two Harleys in the front and two bringing up the rear. It is good to know that the two trikes piloted by Chris and Annette Perry didn t get lost or into trouble on this adventure. We were led by the undauntable Dave Bachman who took us on a merry loop past El Morro National Monument and through Ramah, NM to turn south on NM 36 just before Zuni, NM. We were headed or the great city of Fence Lake, NM. Hopefully nobody blinked when we made that left turn in the middle of the city to stay on NM 36. We did this loop to avoid riding the same route on the return from riding down US 191 (old US 666) and back up to say that we had ridden the devil s highway. We were looking forward to riding lots of curves on Sunday doing that. After settling in and making a short run to the store for eats and drinks we settled down for some comradery and storytelling. It was Dave and Lisa Bachman, Chris and Annette Perry, Richard Mummey and Christy Porter, and last but not least Tom Brewer. After dinner we walked back in the rain rubbing our bellies having had a most scrumptious dinner with some of the group having topped it off with a very good French silk pie. After saying good night we all retired to our respective rooms. In the morning after breakfast, we conferred about going on with the ride. Our fearless leader, Dave had been up early and watched the weather for the day to be much better prepared to lead his courageous group. It did not look good for doing any riding down south. We all agreed that this ride would be a lot more fun and safer if we came back and attempted it in better weather. It was even mentioned about doing the ride from the south to the north. We stopped in Quemado, NM to eat lunch at the Largo Motel & Café. I would recommend it to anyone passing through. The service was good and the green chili cheese burger hit the spot. You have to try the huge chocolate chip cookie for dessert. We had a quick conference after lunch to decide on the route for the afternoon. One look to the south and that eliminated any idea of going that way. The sky was heavy with dark clouds and looked to be very threatening. The original plan was to head down NM 32 to Apache Creek and then over to Reserve and north on US 180 through Alpine, AZ and on into Springerville, AZ. We could head that way and do 200 miles and probably end up wet or just high tail it for Springerville. We took the better part of good sense and headed west to Springerville and the El Jo Motor Inn. Be sure and see Judy who pulled out all the stops to make our stay a pleasant one. Judy made reservations for us at the Rusty Cactus as being the best place to go eat within walking distance. It continued to rain off and on as we packed our bikes for the return ride home. We filled up and headed east stopping in Quemado so that the trikes could fill up. We then on NM36 to NM117 pass El Malpais National Monument to I40 east. It was determined that lunch would be at Laguna Burgers across from the 66 casino. We arrived and went to order and found out that it would be an hour before we would get our meal if we decided to eat there, so much for burgers and off to Dairy Cream for ice cream treats. Of course Richard has decided to change his shirt there in the parking lot. Picture opportunity!!!! Chris chased him around his bike one way trying to get a shot while I pulled out my camera and got a great one. Maybe he will even put it in this news letter. 6 Rider Education Harry Jenkins (505) Janet, Gary, Amy and I had planned our trip to Wing Ding but a few things happened to change the PLAN. We took off on Friday and headed to Dodge City KS then on to Pratt KS that evening. The lady at the hotel recommended a place called Legends a few blocks down the street which was very good. The next morning we got up and it was sprinkling and raining hard when we at last hit the road. Our first change came when we missed the turn to go up 61 so on we went towards Wichita KS, where the rain stopped and we pulled over to check the maps. Our GPS(s) weren t much use in the pouring rain. So as we were under an overhang reviewing the map an older gentleman stopped and ask us where we were going and we said Kansas City, he told us that they had change the road signs from 17to14 so we need to take 14 north to KC. So on we went and sure enough there was the sign to KC and off we headed. Just prior to the turn off Gary had me take the lead as his GPS overheated so I lead us to the Royals Baseball park where Gary informed us his back brakes on his bike did not feel right (mushy) so Amy, Janet and I went on into the ball game and Gary went off to find a repair shop (Gary and Janet will cover the repairs and all in their article). So the 3 of us watched the first 2 innings and the rain started to come down in buckets, (game in a rain delay) Gary texted and said he found a shop and they were working on it. Later he texted and said they had to get a part made and that would not happen till Monday so I called the District Director of Kansas to see if there was anyone in the area to house my bike and Gary s trailer. Gary had been driven to the airport to rent a car for the weekend so we could make it to Hannibal MO. After a few phone calls we were given Ed James number and he agreed to store my bike and the trailer. So we dropped the bike and trailer of at 9:30 pm at Ed s house. Then we headed back into KC and found a hotel for the night, since we all agreed it was not safe to drive the 3-4 more hours to Hannibal by this time it was almost midnight. Sunday morning off we went to Hannibal and a wonderful two days of exploring this quaint little town. Hannibal is the home of Samuel Clemens better known as Mark Twain. We checked in to the hotel and dropped off our bags then off to explore. Just across the street was a little dinner so we had a very nice lunch then headed down town to take the trolley around to the different sites. The trolley took us to Lovers Leap, Mark Twain s Cave, a little amusement park and up the hill to Overlook Park, the driver gave us a great tour and the information we needed to go and explore the next day. Sunday evening we had dinner on a paddle boat on the Mississippi. The meal was very good and we had a lot of fun and met some very nice people from Illinois and Missouri. Monday morning we went down town and went through all of the Mark Twain exhibits and museum, Lovers Leap then out to his cave then to a wine tasting of MO wines. While relaxing in the hot tub that night Gary made the decision to drive on to Wing Ding instead of picking up the bike because we would have lost 2 days and would not arrive until Tuesday night if the bike was ready first thing in the morning which we knew would it would not be. So off to Madison we went. We had a very nice drive through the western part of Illinois and stopped for a very good lunch in a small town of Viola. We started getting text from T he was really bored. We got the call the trike was ready so we let everyone know we would not be picking it up until the next Monday after Wing Ding. Wing Ding went as planned (different story) Sunday was where we made major changes you see Janet and Gary were supposed to meet a friend in the Dakota s and see Mt. Rushmore and ride the Black Hills and Amy and I were supposed to head to my brother s house in Cincinnati and the ride to Canton Ohio to the Football Hall Fame. Without their trike and my bike we could not complete that part of the journey. We left Wing Ding on Sunday and went to the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee WI., very nice museum if not a little pricy. Then on to the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa Iowa, then we found a hotel for the night 3 hours north of KC. Monday we went on to KC and picked up Gary s trike and then on to Ed s for my bike and his trailer. After loading the bike and trailer we thanked Ed for his wonderful hospitality and headed south to Harrison Arkansas to ride Northern Arkansas. We decided to stay at a 1929 hotel in Harrison, nice, clean and cheap the bar and restaurant are closed on Sunday and Monday So we got up the next morning and went for a walk of the town and stopped and the towns little museum and were surprised how well it had been put together. After lunch we headed to Russellville Honda/Trike shop. On the way down Gary had another issue so we went to Horizon Trike in Clarksville to get it fixed. Chapter W GWRRA Albuquerque, NM August 2014 Page 6 of 24 6

7 Horizon Trikes builds all the trikes for Russellville Honda, we got to meet GWRRA Hall a famer Bob Humphrey s and the owner of the shop Aaron Mize. While working on Gary s trike Gary and Janet took a few test rides on the models Bob had in the shop. It was getting late and they told us they would not be able to finish fixing the bike tonight but would have it done by noon the next day. So Bob loaned us an 1800 trike with a trailer hitch to drive back the 84 miles to Harrison and bring it back the next day. So off we went back to Harrison, it was near 5:30 and the sky was black so we knew we would meet the rain. And the Rain we did meet in a small hamlet of Ozone. It was pouring so hard I pulled over in a ladies front yard and she invited us up on to the porch out of the rain. It was raining so hard we could not see the bike from 20 feet for a few minutes. The rain let up and we knew just down the road was the Ozone Burger Barn, so off we went and about a half mile down the road we found the Ozone Burger Barn, parked the bikes and got under the awning. We went over to the Barn (shed) and ordered our food from the owner and had a wonderful meal (if you re in the area stop and get a burger or the fish sandwich). We waited for 1 ½ to 2 hours for the storm to pass. After the storm passed we had to ride the last 74 mile at dusk and into the night. We counted 42 deer and 12 elk and our top speed of 35 miles an hour. It took us a little over 2 hours to reach Harrison and our hotel at around 11pm. Wednesday morning we packed up and off to Horizon Trikes we went. We decided to go back the reverse of how we came up to see the run during the daylight and it was beautiful. As we arrived at Horizon s we noticed Gary s trike out front ready to go. (But no we could not leave because Janet & Gary wanted to buy one of the trikes they had for sale) So we spent the afternoon doing paperwork and waiting on the banker to get there. We ask Bob for recommendations for a good lunch and he told us about a truck stop restaurant behind the Ford dealer, and another great meal was had by all. By 6pm they had completed the paperwork and were the proud owners of a with only 15,000- miles on it and off to find a hotel we went. Thursday we headed down I 40 toward Shawnee OK Honda shop. In a 3 hour run we had overcast for an hour then rain for an hour the sun and heat for an hour. We spent about 2 hours at Shawnee and liked the people we met. Then on to Clinton TX were the temperature rose to 101 and we had to take a break, Clinton is the home of the Route 66 museum. We spent an hour waiting for the temperature to break and it did so on to Amarillo we went and stayed at the la Kiva Hotel, and found out that the Bar& Grill was only a bar but the lady from the hotel set us up with a limo to and from the Big Texan (free limo ride put on by the Big Texan). We had a great time and dinner even though it was 9pm when we got there and still had an hour wait. We had great service and a great meal. Friday morning we headed for home stopping at Clines Corner for gas and lunch (much better food than I had been informed) then on to home we pressed. We made so many changes on this trip we had started with plan A and ended on plan R. What a great trip and great time Amy and I had with Janet and Gary. A trip to remember!!!! So why is this an educational piece you may ask. You have to learn to be flexible in riding and in life because things change. 9 Fun-o-Meter Monique Kourdae June Well I didn't get any comments about not having an article for June and that surprised me. Some nice Visitors came and it was good to have some new faces. 3. Nice prizes Well I didn't get any comments about not having an article for June and that surprised me. July Didn't know if David and I would be back from our trip to Wing Ding so I gave the goodie can to Lisa with the goodies of course...but we showed up! David was given a new phone and asked not to use it. His expression was indescribable and I hope someone got a picture...he was lost for words, and the laughter was off the charts and we'll the real fun began. David and I won the distance mileage...boy are we on a roll or what...have to be laid back s bit more next month. There were quite a few oooh's and aahs, lots of laughs, a few snappy comments, awards and announcements. All and all the meeting was a good one BUT couldn't get the meter over the 75% again. 10 Another Wing Ding 36 story Gary and Janet Longhurst Gary and I missed the Region Rally as we were enjoying his daughter's wedding in England! So we decided that a Wing Ding would be good fun! Harry and Amy Jenkins were keen to attend too as this would be their first time also. We met up a few times before the trip to discuss what we all wanted to do and see and then we set off early Friday 27 th of June. We visited Dodge City on our first day and learned that it is twinned with Stockport England, just a couple of miles from where we used to live! How weird is that! Second day all went pear shaped and you can get that full story from reading Chapter Fs August newsletter! We arrived, as planned in Madison on Tuesday 1 st of July, in a Chevy Malibu with no vests, no trike or trailer, no class notes for Gary, but hey we were all safe! Attendance at Wing Ding was lower than usual and vendors were limited. Maybe the weather had a knock on effect as there had been torrential rain and tornados the few days prior. Weather for us was hot and sunny from Wednesday onwards and I got a sun tan watching the drill teams! Bumped into some familiar faces and did a lot of nattering (talking) and getting to know people, new and old! As newbie's we were required to wear a badge, which allowed people to recognize us and make us feel welcome. Next year's Wing Ding is being held in Huntsville, Alabama, and the Mayor was at opening ceremonies telling us all about his home town! We left Madison on Sunday as planned, but we had to travel back to Kansas City to collect our repaired trike and Harry and Amy's bike and our trailer(again) Chapter F newsletter), so we changed our route and visited the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, the National Motor Bike Museum in Anamosa and then on to Arkansas where the best bit of the trip happened! We bought our new trike! Cabernet Red CSC Trike! Need I say more, now Gary definitely can t retire! Wonderful trip all in all and would have loved to stay out a few more days, as we only managed to get to Plan R and I wanted to get to Z! A BIG thank-you to everyone who helped to put on the rides on in our absence over the last few weeks, especially Dave and Lisa Bachman who led the Pagosa overnighter, Sipapu, Sandia Peak and AZ 191 alternate rides and Brian Leist for organizing and leading the Full Day AZ 191. For those of you that may be wondering, we were attending our first Wing Ding and earlier this month participating in the 15 th Annual 100K Foot Colorado pass ride. 11 Clifton or Bust! August 3, 2014 Our Sunday ride on August 3, 2014, was originally planned as a 700 mile one day ride, turned out to be only 650 miles. We started off at the original planned Valero station in Albuquerque, kickstands up at 5:30 am sharp. Our group consisted of Brian and Michele Leist, Rick Perea, Bob Hall and John Dillion. Bob and John are active members of the Lunch with Dave motorcycle group. Primarily, a long distance riding group. Please check out their website at Bob and I have been friends since our involvement with the local BMW group. Some of you may know Bob as being awarded the World Champion Iron Butt Rider in We made short order of our ride through the El Malpais south of Grants. What a beautiful, lush and green area with the massive red rocks misted by an early morning rain. We continued south into Quemado and west into Springerville. It was a little rainy in Springerville but we still felt confident to continue our ride south down Hwy 191 which offers much better views than riding Hwy 191 in a northerly direction, FYI. After a quick breakfast at McDonalds and a fuel stop, we were on our way. The ride through the mountains was beautiful, foggy and green. Our first Geocache stop was across the road from Hannigan Meadows Lodge. How about that! We continued south on 191 to the top of the mountain, the fog was thick but no rain to speak of. We pressed on. As we continued south, the fog and light rain decreased significantly which allowed us to see some beautiful views of the valley below. Once we reached Clifton, Arizona, the temperature was already was quite warm and the skies were as clear as a bell. The group decided to do two more Geocaches before having lunch at the American Legion Post. John is a veteran and has privileges to the American Legion Post. He treated us to some delicious green chili cheese burgers and sodas. One of the Geocaches was at the old Clifton jail and the other one was at an enormous shovel used in the mining industry. After lunch, we made our way to Guthrie where John Dillion said his goodbyes to the group. John was on his way to Phoenix to meet an old Army buddy. From Guthrie we headed northeast to Arizona 78 which is no slouch road, quite twisty and hilly. It was exciting Weather was still holding out, but we knew as we approached Glenwood, the rain gear would be needed. Luckily Bob Hall was in the lead with his BMW dual sport motorcycle, Brian and Michele in 2 nd place and Rick taking up the back. All of a sudden, I see Bob decelerate his motorcycle to the point of almost stopping. What the hell? We were about to cross areas on the highway that were being flooded by the deluge of rain and runoff from the neighboring mountains. Once we made Reserve, New Mexico and crossed the San Francisco River, we discovered that Henry s Corner gas station was closed. Uncle Bill s Bar across the street was open, tempting as it was, and we pressed on. We experienced on and off rain showers until we reached Datil. Once we reached Datil, the rain suits were off, skies were clearing and no gasoline in sight. Magdalena was our next hope for gas. At this point, yours truly was in the lead. Being extremely low on gas, we rode gingerly to Magdalena only to find that their gas stations were closed. Not good at all. Never fear Bob said, the 1 st gas station we had passed had a magnetic card reader. After a couple of attempts, I actually got one to work. Hallelujah!! At this point we were all set to head to Socorro. Rick was doing great, not a problem at all. However, Bob was having issues with his rear tire going low with a staple he had picked along the way. That was the last time we saw Bob. He is a very self reliant type of guy and we knew he had matters under control. So we three pressed on to Albuquerque. We arrived in Albuquerque at 8:30 pm, 650 miles on the odometer, wet rain suits in the trunk of the bike, sun burned faces and grins ear to ear. What an excellent ride, Michele & I are so thankful for the guys that rode with us. Thank you very much. See you on the next one, September 7 to Deming, New Mexico, 500 mile ride which will be the last of the one day long distance rides. Greg and Marcia, Mike Dalby, Dean, Robin, Dave Bachman, Tony and Debbie, Tony Nelson, and Tom Brewer took off on a tour of the top of the Sandia Crest. It was a slow ride up to the top where everyone dismounted and walked over to the path along the crest to get a good look out to the west over the city. At 12:30 we gathered up and our ride leader led us down the mountain and east on Frost Road. I do believe he got a bit lost at one point as he came to a stop sign and I could see from the back of the pack as he was looking around trying to decide if he needed to turn or not. It all worked out quite all right as he led us to Katrinah's East Mountain Grill at NM 344 and Dinkle Road. Harry flagged the stragglers in through the back door to our waiting tables. Harry, Chris, Annette, Janet and Gary arrived early as they were completing the road captains and road captain trainer course. I believe it caused somewhat of a stir as the rest of the patrons kept glancing over at us. Naw, we just looked like a bunch of hot bikers that have invaded their Sunday dinning place. Evidently the heat got to two of the riders as you can tell by their expressions. Sorry Tony that you had to be sitting by one of them. It didn t seem to faze Chris though.
