The Silver Eagle News EXTRA: Visit our new Chapter website at: From the Director s Saddle Johnny Thompson Hello Hogsters, Well, let s start with an important message from the Dealership; The Celebrity Ride to Nellis Air Force Base on September 10 th in honor of our military men and women. Registration has been slow so far, so we as a Chapter need to pre-register now and turn your registration into the dealership as soon as possible. Encourage anybody and everybody to come join us as we get the chance to ride our motorcycles down the Air Force runway and the Thunder Birds hangar. If you didn t get a chance to join us last year, make sure to come out for this one, you will not be disappointed. This year we will leave a little earlier than last year. We will leave around 4:00 pm, get a pep talk from the Commanding Officer, meet the Thunderbird Pilots and have a organized ride off the base, unlike last year where some were speeding (Continued on page 2) 2005 SN H.O.G. 2 PAGE 2 THE SILVER EAGLE NEWS Editor s Note. Arnny Abad So if you haven t figured it out yet, this is the month that you are getting your newsletter in the mail. Proof of that is that you are holding it in your hand at this very moment. You can also look at the color version of it in the web page. Next month you ll only be able to access the newsletter online. This edition of your latest and greatest has some pretty cool articles by some of our newer members. I like these articles because even though compared to some members I am relatively new with little over a year, (being an officer in the chapter adds years to your membership life, kinda like dog years) reading the newer members take on our rides gets me almost as excited to ride as they are and reminds me what this chapter is about. So read on and look at the nice little pictures. Next month we are going to do our version of Where is Waldo? except that it will be called Where is Johnny? Now if I can get our director to wear that silly red and white striped sweater we ll be set. Remember the website address is Cheers, Arnny From the Director s Saddle (continued) (Continued from page 1) down the runway and weaving in and out all over the runway. After leaving the base, we will head to Sunset Station in Henderson for a concert by rock band Molly Hatchet. Prices for the ride to Nellis are $30.00 per rider, $20.00 for the passenger and the concert cost is $ and every penny of the concert money will be donated to our military personnel and their families so PLEASE sign up early and support our troops. Also there will only be a limited number of ride pin for this event. Then, Sunday at the Henderson Harley- Davidson dealership there will be a Poker Run and bike show with celebrities joining in for a great follow up of Saturdays ride. Now on to Chapter business. We ve have had some great participation in the last few months, with a breakfast run to Mountain Springs, the dinner ride to Tommy Rockers and a couple of overnighters to name a few. Having just returned from an overnight trip to Ely, we had the misfortune of a rider going down on the way to Ely. Now let me tell you, as the Director it was my hope that this would not happen this year or any other year, but let me tell you how it was handled. Our Road Captains responded quickly, the ambulance and the police were called, the Road Captains attended to the biker and administered first aid until the paramedics arrived. So it s not important who goes down or why they go down, what is important to know is that as a Chapter we are prepared to handle situations like this. Our Road Captains are certified in CPR and first aid. That is why we say ride your own ride, as a rider make yourself prepared for the days ride, wear the proper attire, drink plenty of fluids, wear sunscreen, long sleeve shirts, if it is an overnighter, check out what the weather may be for the weekend. You might bring a rain suit or heavier clothes for the trip. We are not the Boy Scouts but be prepared. Now, we have some great rides coming up in September starting with a 2 night overnighter, first to San Luis Obispo on the 3 rd and then on to Calabasas on Sunday the 4 th. So my message for this month is for you to think about riding with this chapter and the friends that you have made because of it. I hope to see you on a ride in the near future and as always Ride Safe and have fun. Johnny

THE SILVER EAGLE NEWS PAGE 3 Welcome New Members Anthony Carl Kim Alvey John Headley Steven Mack Michael Walker Bret Bernhard Wade Honey David Waugh Meet and Greet ride to Mount Charleston Sharon Miller Greg and I ride a 1998 Heritage Softtail. We were active in our HOG chapter in Phoenix but since moving to Nevada in January, we have not had the opportunity to ride. Finally, we are 95% moved in and Greg registered the bike and secured his Nevada license so we were excited to join SNHOG for the Meet and Greet. At first, we were overwhelmed by the size of the turnout. We had been used to much smaller rides. All these good people out for a morning ride are an indication of a very well run chapter. The organization and thought put into the day s ride impressed us. And, of course, the friendliness that makes us proud to be HOG members was evident. A special thanks to Little Joe for taking us under his wing. The ride began with a drive by to Doc Carney and his wife. Recently injured in a biking accident, Doc was surprised by his HOG family in a show of support. It seemed like his neighbors enjoyed the surprise as much as he did. We were told the SNHOG loves to surprise people. It sounds like just our kind of group! Then it was on to Mt. Charleston. Greg and I were especially excited about this ride because it took us beyond the city limits and out to see more of our new state. We are avid hikers and look forward to seeing more of Southern Nevada s countryside. The ride was a great introduction. Once again, the planning made the trip worry-free and we enjoyed the scenery, the company, and quizzing each other on hand signals. Our stop on Mt. Charleston was brief but gave us a chance to meet many members of our new family. It will take awhile to learn faces and names but we appreciate all the introductions. I am sure the other new members will agree with us that we felt very welcome. We would like to thank the dealership for lunch, and kudos to the staff members who pitched in and stepped behind the counter to help the Subway staff meet the demand. Sure, the line was long but what s a little wait for a free lunch among new friends? We stayed for the tattoo contest and remarked to each other that SNHOG was definitely going to be a fun experience for us. We look forward to a long and involved membership. Greg and I live in Henderson. We have four sons, David, 19, Stephen, 16, Matthew, 15, and Martin, 9. Matthew is counting days (and his pennies) until he can have his own bike so maybe this time next year he ll be joining us on rides.. Sharon

PAGE 4 THE SILVER EAGLE NEWS August Meeting Minutes. Lynnette Abad Johnny opened up the meeting by welcoming all of the new members. He then proceeded to speak about the upcoming Celebrity Ride on September 10 th. The money raised for this event will go to the family members of the men and women from Nellis Air Force Base. After the ride, there will be a party at the Sunset Station for $15 in which Molly Hatchet will be performing. Johnny then proceeded to speak about what it takes to become an Ambassador with the Chapter. An Officer needs to be 50% active in the chapter and a member for at least six months. He welcomed all who are interested to fill out an Officer application. Tom Plehn, our dealer rep, has asked that all children are kept under complete supervision during the General Membership meetings as there have been some incidents in the past. Then Joe Hewitt, our past Secretary, spoke to everyone and has extended his home in Samoa to anyone that wants to visit. He is offering a place to stay and tons of sight seeing. Johnny announced our new webmaster, Larry Lewis. Welcome Larry and thanks for taking up the job! Johnny then proceeded to speak about our new schedule for sending out newsletters every other month and it will be on the website every month. We will also increase the amount that will be available at the main dealership on the months that we do not send them out. Johnny also spoke about the Christmas party this year which will be at the Golden Nugget. It will take place on December 10 th and the price will be $25 per person. Lene Mogavero then spoke about the Annual Children s Run this year in which a committee has been formed. If anyone has any questions regarding the Run, please contact them. As always, this is a nonalcoholic Chapter. Therefore, drinking is not accepted right before or during a Chapter ride. If someone chooses to drink, they will not be allowed to ride with the group for the remainder of that ride. Also, during this summer heat, please remember to wear lots of sunscreen and drink plenty of water before a ride. This is essential to summer riding in Las Vegas. There is always a chase vehicle on each ride that will provide plenty of water as well. Lastly, always arrive for rides on time and fully fueled. Lastly, we have been sending Chapter correspondences via and it has been quite a success. So, don t be kept out of the loop and keep your addresses current with us by sending them to secretary@snhoglv.com. Remember, the Calendar in your Newsletter is the last word! Also, check out our new Chapter website at and follow the link. Lynnette

Donna Screnci Joe and I just got back this afternoon from our first overnighter with the SNHOG chapter. We went to the Grand Canyon; North Rim. We stayed the night in Kanab, Utah. Wow! We had a great time. Can t wait for the next one! Everyone made us feel really welcome and riding was wonderful. I was a bit nervous about riding with a large group, especially when I found out we d come back through Zion and there was rain in the forecast. I still don t feel really comfortable on some of those curves. However, I was really pleasantly surprised. Everyone rode so well together, it was like a syn- chronized group; Joe and I seemed to fit in just fine. I was impressed with how safe I felt and never pushed beyond my limits by having to try to keep up. Speed limits were always observed and it all seemed like clock work. What a great way to travel! Plenty of gas and potty breaks (and of course those REALLY GOOD COOKIES at the one stop!) As you can tell I loved it! And of course Joey continues to be a happy boy on his new ride! We are looking forward to the next trip! Donna

PAGE 7 THE SILVER EAGLE NEWS From the Road Captains...End of Summer. Mark Hastie, Assistant Lead Road Captain Hello to all and we hope you all have had a great summer of riding and fun. I have talked to some of you and have heard many stories of the great summer rides. The Chapter has also had some great rides and overnighters this summer; we hope you ve had the opportunity to join in on some of them and started to build memories. This newsletter will arrive just as our summer ends and we start getting ready for the fall, sending kids and grandkids back to school and getting back to weekend trips and rides instead of week or longer rides. A quick note to all new and newer members, we have a New Member Meet and Greet about every other month, we would love to see you at one of these rides. We will introduce you to some of the Chapter s Officers, instruct you on our hand signals, and introduce you to our riding style. We then take a short ride around the Vegas Valley and usually have lunch afterwards. During this ride we will at one of the stops introduce ourselves (meet and greet) and have a chance to get to know each of you. The New Member Meet and Greets are not just for New Members we have a large member turn out and a great time getting to know our ever growing family. For those of you that are new to riding with us and have not had a chance to attend a Meet and Greet ride, here is a couple of things to know. First all rides are posted on the current calendar with the leave locations and times also posted. The leave time is the leave time, we arrive at least a half hour prior to posted leave time, fully fueled, ready to sign in for the ride and have a chance to mingle. The Road Captains will give a quick over view of the day s ride, demonstrate our hand signals and advise where we will line up for the ride to start. We will introduce the ride s Lead, Lead Rear, Scout and Rabbit Road Captains. Please note that once again all leave times posted are leave times and that also means fully fueled and ready to roll. Another note is that when the group stops for fuel, we recommend that you get fuel! The Road Captains plan the rides and routes to allow for both fuel and rest stops but missing a fueling chance can have you sputtering to the side of the road. Please remember also that we have at least one Road Captain at the back of the group, we call him the Lead Rear Road Captain, he will assign someone to stop with you or stop himself to assist as needed in getting you back on the road and or to call for mechanical assistance. The Chapter has some great things coming up this Fall and Winter, we have the September weekend events, the Celebrity ride to Nellis, The Desert Thunder Poker Run, ride to Oatman, Top Gun and 2 Up Top Gun, a few more overnighters and the Holiday Party in December, the Hair of the HOG on New Year s Day and then we will start all over for Top Gun and 2-Up Top Gun are coming up. We hope you plan to join in, have fun and work on your riding skills with us. We do these events a couple times each year to work together to hone our slow riding skills and in turn help to make us all better riders. We will have people on the course to talk through the events and give you tips to help better your ride. Come out and join in on this, bring the family have something to eat as we will BBQ and have snacks. (Continued on page 9)

THE SILVER EAGLE NEWS PAGE 9 Road Captains...cont. (Continued from page 7) This is meant to be a HOG family day of fun. The Road Captains want to thank you for joining us Over Night Ride to Ely Karen Heriford on the past rides and look forward to having you join us for the up and coming rides yet to come. As always Ride Safe and Have Fun Mark When we started out on Saturday morning, we had no idea what the weekend would bring. Our ride took us north along the Scenic Byway of State Route 93 and through Alamo. After refueling, we were on the road again and heading east through Caliente. We then headed north again and into the old mining town of Pioche. Our gas stop was next to the Courthouse, which many of you will remember from a previous ride. Then we continued onwards towards Ely. Along the way, we had a mishap and one of the bikes went down. The Road Captains and fellow riders came to the rescue and emergency medical personnel were summoned. The remainder of the group went ahead a bit and found a place to wait. During that time, those at the scene joined together to help a fallen friend and those who went ahead had time to sit, talk and reflect on how wonderful it is to be part of such a great group. Our fallen friend was taken by ambulance to the hospital and the group headed into Ely. After checking into the Historic Nevada Hotel or Jailhouse Hotel, a check was made at the hospital. Word came that was encouraging but that he would need to spend the night. Back at the hotel, some people got together to take a ride to check out the area, others tried their hand at the table or machines while others walked down to the park to check out the Classic Car show. Later on, those of us who had made reservations to take the Sunset Wine Train ride got together in the lobby and made our way to the depot, either by bike, car, limo or van. There we picked up our tickets and table assignments. Dennis spoke with the Engineer to make sure all was okay and the Conductor came out to greet us. After boarding, we were on our way. We headed out of the station and towards Steptoe Valley. While enjoying the view from the open car, they set out trays of rolls, cold cuts, fruits and vegetables. The tables were set with linens and wine glasses. We were served a bottle of wine from the Pahrump Valley Wineries and the evening was ours to enjoy. As we traveled, the sun set and we were treated to a beautiful sky. At the end of the route, we stopped so that the engine could be brought around to the other end of the train for the ride home. During this time, the train was robbed. There were four of them and they took the Sheriff and the cash box off the train and then made their way through the train. Afterwards, we were back on the move, heading back to the Depot. We can all appreciate the workers on the train as they are all volunteers who give up their time so that we can have an enjoyable evening. As we made our way back, Johnny started to sing to us. We tried our best to join in and now we know why we haven t had a Karaoke night! Sunday morning we met up again for the ride home. The air was cool and refreshing. By the time we got to Pioche, the coats came off and we were back on the road. The clouds started to move in and we had a bit of rain, hail and lightning. By the time we made Alamo, the sky was clear and the weather was warming up for the ride back to home. So like I said, the weekend brought us some new experiences. We made some new friends, rekindled some old friendships and renewed our faith in the Lord who watches over us. Karen
