1 Campus Safety Clery Act Public Crime Log From 1/1/2018 To 12/31/2018 PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : LOWER KE LOT #19 1/6/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 1/3/ and 1/6/ The Campus Safety Department took a report of an attempted theft from a motor vehicle, in the lower KE parking lot (lot 19). A student found that someone had entered their unlocked car and went though their belongings. Nothing had been taken. CAMPUS PROPERTY : PARKING LOT : PARKING LOT 19 1/6/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 1/2/ and 1/6/ The Campus Safety Department took a report of an attempted theft from a motor vehicle, in the lower KE parking lot (lot 19). A student found that someone had entered their unlocked car and went though their belongings. Nothing had been taken. SEX OFFENSE: RAPE 1/9/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 1/6/ and 1/6/ The Student Conduct office advised they received a report of a student on student sexual assault. The incident occurred in Knollcrest East on January 6, The Dean of Student Conduct has since been in communication with both students and there is no serious or ongoing threat to the community. PROPERTY/OTHER : MANOR HOUSE 1/9/ Incident Occurred Between: 1/9/ and 1/9/ Case #: , Campus Safety officers were called to DeWit Manor to check on a suspicious person who was observed standing outside the house in the trees. Officers made contact with a student in the yard. Officers questioned the student on the reason they were standing in the trees, and the student subsequently admitted they smoking marijuana. The information on the student involved was forwarded to the Student Conduct office for further action. STALKING OFF CAMPUS PROPERTY 1/12/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/5/ and 1/11/ A student reported a stalking incident involving an individual who they had met during a previous job. The person who was making unwanted contact had no connection with Calvin College or the student. The student was instructed to make a police report and obtain a no-contact order with the 17th Circuit Court. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : KALSBEEK/HUIZENGA/VANREEKEN 1/14/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 1/14/ and 1/14/ Residence Life staff in Kalsbeek/Huizenga/VanReken, located alcohol and drugs in a basement study room while conducting rounds. There was no one in the study room at the time of the discovery. The found items were turned over to the Campus Safety Department for further investigation. 1 of
2 PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : BEETS/VEENSTRA 1/20/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 1/20/ and 1/20/ Residence Life Staff contacted the Campus Safety Department to assist with a student conduct violation, involving alcohol, in Beets/Veenstra. Several students were found to have consumed or be in possession of alcohol. The report was sent to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : EAST BELTLINE LOT # 1/21/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 1/21/ and 1/21/ The Campus Safety Department investigated a college rules violation involving drugs. A student was found sleeping in a car in parking lot #. when Campus Safety Officers approached the car to check on the student they found marijuana in the car. The report was sent to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : SCHULTZE/ELDERSVELD 1/21/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 1/21/ and 1/21/ Campus Safety Officers investigated a college rules violation, involving alcohol, in Shultze/Eldersveld. The report was sent to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. EXTORTION PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : BOER/BENNINK 1/23/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 1/22/ and 1/22/ The Campus Safety Department took an on line extortion report from a student. The extortion was believed to be coming from outside of the country. The student was advised on safety precautions. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : BOLT/HEYNS/TIMMER 2/7/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 2/7/ and 2/7/ Campus Safety Officers and Residence Life Staff investigated a college rules violation involving alcohol in Heyns Hall. The results of the investigation were sent to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. 3 PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : BEETS/VEENSTRA 2/16/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 2/16/ and 2/16/ Campus Safety Officers investigated a College Rules Violation for drugs in Beets/Veenstra Hall. The results of the investigation were sent to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : PHI/CHI 2/16/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 2/16/ and 2/16/ Campus Safety Officers investigated a College Rules Violation for drugs in the Phi/Chi apartments. The results of the investigation were sent to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. CAMPUS PROPERTY : PARKING LOT : PARKING LOT 8 2/20/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 2/20/ and 2/20/ While patrolling parking lot #8 and checking vehicles for permits, a Campus Safety employee observed alcohol located inside a student's vehicle. The student who owned the car was contacted by the officer and the alcohol confiscated. The information on the student was forwarded to the Student Conduct office for further action. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : SCHULTZE/ELDERSVELD 2/22/ Incident Occurred Between: 2/22/ and 2/22/ Case #: , The Campus Safety Department was contacted to investigate the smell of marijuana coming from a residence hall room in Eldersveld Hall. Officers made contact with a student who lives in the room and they conducted a room search. The results of the officers investigation were forwarded to the Student Conduct Office for further action. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : SCHULTZE/ELDERSVELD 2/22/ Incident Occurred Between: 2/22/ and 2/22/ Case #: , The Campus Safety Department was contacted to investigate the smell of marijuana coming from a residence hall room in Eldersveld Hall. Officers made contact with a student who lives in the room and they conducted a room search. The results of the officers investigation were forwarded to the Student Conduct Office for further action. MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : CFAC LOT #9 3/2/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 3/1/ and 3/2/ The Service Learning Center reported to the Campus Safety Department that one of their department vans was missing. A staff member parked the van in lot 9 at about 6:00pm on March 1, 2018 and it was missing when they looked for it around 10:00am on March 2. Video of the lot shows the vehicle leaving at 8:15pm on March 1 and never returning. The incident was reported to the Grand Rapids Police Department. 3 of
4 LARCENY/THEFT : THEFT FROM BUILDING PROPERTY/BUILDINGS 3201 BURTON ST SE : VENEMA AQUATIC CENTER 3/4/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 2/24/ and 3/24/ TOT-OTHER AGENCY The Campus Safety Department was contacted by a member of Calvin's swim team to report that two members of the Kalamazoo College swim team stole the Calvin swim team's ceremonial sword while the team was celebrating their MIAA tournament victory. Authorities at Kalamazoo College were contacted regarding the theft in an attempt to have the stolen item returned. BURGLARY N 3// Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 1/20/ and 1/21/ An interim class was staying in a guest house in Makeni Sierra Leone. One of the rooms that students were staying in was broken into. Several student phones were stolen as a result. A report was made with the Sierra Leone police and a suspect was caught and the phones returned to the students. LARCENY/THEFT : THEFT FROM BUILDING PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : NOORDEWIER/VANDERWERP 3/26/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 3/15/ and 3/26/ Campus Safety took a report of a larceny of a skateboard from the lobby of Noordewier VanderWerp residence hall lobby. The skateboard was left in the lobby during the break and was taken sometime between March 15 and March 26. LARCENY/THEFT : THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLE PARTS OR ACCESSORIES PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : WEST LOT #2 3/26/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 3/26/ and 3/26/ The Campus Safety Department took a report of a larceny of parts from a motor vehicle. A staff member reported one of the wiper blades from their car was stolen while it was parked in lot #2. LARCENY/THEFT : THEFT FROM BUILDING PROPERTY/BUILDINGS 3201 BURTON ST SE : SPOELHOF FIELDHOUSE COMPLEX 4/6/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 4/5/ and 4/6/ The Campus Safety Department took a report of a possible theft of a longboard from the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex. The student who made the initial report later advised the board had been located and returned to them. LARCENY/THEFT : BICYCLE PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : SCHULTZE/ELDERSVELD 4// Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 2/28/ and 4// The Campus Safety Department took a report of a larceny of a bicycle from the bike racks outside of Schultze Eldersveld residence hall. The owner of the bike could not recall if they had locked the bike, and they did not know the make or model of the bike. The owner also had not registered the bike with the Campus Safety Department. 4 of
5 LARCENY/THEFT : BICYCLE PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : NOORDEWIER/VANDERWERP 4/24/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 4/24/ and 4/24/ The Campus Safety Department took a stolen bike report from a student who said their black Gary Fischer bike was stolen from the Noordewier/VanderWerp bike rack on 4/24/18 between 4:30pm and 11:00pm. The bike was locked with a combination lock. When the owner returned to the bike rack the bike was missing but the lock was still there and had been opened. Campus Safety Officers checked campus but did not locate the bike. LARCENY/THEFT : SHOPLIFTING PROPERTY/BUILDINGS 3201 BURTON ST SE : COMMONS 4/25/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 4/25/ and 4/25/ Johnny's Café employees called the Campus Safety Department to report the theft of property from the café. A student was observed taking ice cream, placing it in their back pack and leaving without paying for the ice cream. Campus Safety officers contacted and interviewed the student and retrieved the ice cream. 6 5/11/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 2/1/ and 2/28/ A student reported to a Safer Spaces coordinator that they were the victim of a sexual assault involving inappropriate touching in February The incident occurred in parking lot #8. The victim only wanted to make the college aware of the incident, and declined to provide any additional detail. Based upon the information provided, it was determined that currently there was no immediate or ongoing threat to the safety of the campus at the time the report was made. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE 5// Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 5// and 5// The Campus Safety Department was called to Boer Hall to assist Residence Life staff with the investigation of an alcohol violation. Two of the subjects involved in the incident were not Calvin students, so the Grand Rapids Police were called to assist. Two subjects received appearance tickets for minor in possession of alcohol while one subject was cited for furnishing alcohol to a minor. 5/17/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 2/1/ and 2/28/ A student reported to the Office of Student Conduct that they were the victim of an inappropriate sexual touching in Schultze Hall in February of It was determined that currently there was no immediate or ongoing threat to the safety of the campus at the time the report was made. FRAUD PROPERTY/BUILDINGS 3201 BURTON ST SE : MAIL & PRINT 5/31/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 5/31/ and UNKNOWN TOT-GRAND RAPIDS POLICE The Campus Safety office was notified by Mail Services employees that they had received some packages that appeared to be fraudulently purchased with stolen credit card numbers. When individuals came to pick up the packages, officers made contact with and identified them. Also, the Grand Rapids Police responded and interviewed the individuals. STALKING ROADWAY : KNOLLCREST CIRCLE DRIVE 6/4/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 6/4/ and 6/4/ The Campus Safety Department investigated a stalking complaint that involved a domestic issue involving a Calvin staff member. Officers provided security escorts for the employee along with increasing patrol of the area where they work. TRESPASSING PROPERTY/BUILDINGS 3201 BURTON ST SE : PRINCE CONFERENCE CENTER 6/17/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 6/17/ and 6/17/ A Campus Safety officer was called to the Prince Conference Center at the request of staff ask a person who was trespassing in the Center to leave. The individual had previously taken food without permission and was not a guest in the hotel or conference center. The individual was escorted out of the building and instructed not to return. 6 of
7 EXTORTION OFF CAMPUS PROPERTY 6/27/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 6/25/ and 6/25/ TOT-GRAND RAPIDS POLICE The Campus Safety Department took a report from a student who had money extorted from them from a telephone scam. The student was threatened with arrest if they did not pay the called. After paying the initial amount the caller tried to extort more money. At this point the student advised a friend what was happening and they were told it was a scam. Campus Safety advised the student on what to do if calls continued. Campus Safety also made contact with the Grand Rapids Police Department with the incident information. FRAUD PROPERTY/BUILDINGS 3201 BURTON ST SE : PRINCE CONFERENCE CENTER 7/10/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 5/25/ and 6/5/ TOT-GRAND RAPIDS POLICE Campus Safety took a report of defrauding an inn keeper that occurred at the Prince Conference Center & Hotel on three separate occasions between May 25 and June 5, The subject paid for their hotel room using using a different name and credit card each time. It was determined the credit cards were stolen. The information regarding the theft was forwarded to the Grand Rapids Police. LARCENY/THEFT : BICYCLE PROPERTY/BUILDINGS 3201 BURTON ST SE : SPOELHOF COLLEGE CENTER 7/10/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 7/10/ and 7/10/ Campus Safety took a report of a larceny of a bicycle from the bike rack outside the north end of the Spoelhof College Center on June 10, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The bicycle is a silver Trek 7.1 Men's bicycle with a rack on the back and a bike helmet attached to it. The bike was registered with the Campus Safety Department and it was locked at the time of the theft. The victim was advised to also make a report with the Grand Rapids Police Department. LARCENY/THEFT : BICYCLE PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : BETA 8/27/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 5/20/ and 8/27/ Campus Safety took a report of a larceny of a bicycle from Beta Apartment. The bike was taken sometime between May 20 and August 27, The bike was not locked at the time and not registered with Campus Safety. It is described as a black Ross men's bicycle. The owner was also encouraged to make a stole bicycle report with the Grand Rapids Police Department. LARCENY/THEFT : ALL OTHER LARCENY PROPERTY/BUILDINGS 3201 BURTON ST SE : COMMONS 8/31/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 8/30/ and 8/30/ The Campus Safety Department took a larceny report from a student who had their cell phone stolen during a community picnic on the commons lawn. The owner tracked the missing phone to a nearby Apple store. The owner was advised they would need to contact the Grand Rapids Police Department for further investigation since the phone was located at an off campus business. 7 of
8 LARCENY/THEFT : THEFT FROM BUILDING PROPERTY/OTHER 9/2/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 5/18/ and 9/2/ Campus Safety took a report of the larceny of a coat from the trunk room inside Rooks VanDellen residence hall. The coat was put in storage at the end of the spring semester When the student picked up their property from the trunk room, the coat was missing. In addition to making a report with the Campus Safety Department, the student was encouraged to report the theft with the Grand Rapids Police as well as Residence Life. PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : LOWER KE LOT #19 9/5/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/4/ and 9/5/ The Campus Safety Department took a Larceny from a Vehicle report from parking lot #19, near the Seminary Student Housing. A purse was stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked in the lot. The victim was also filing a report with the Grand Rapids Police Department. PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : LOWER KE LOT #19 9/5/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/3/ and 9/5/ The Campus Safety Department took a Larceny from a Vehicle report from parking lot #19, near Kappa. Change was stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked in the lot. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : BOER/BENNINK 9/8/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/8/ and 9/8/ Residence Life Staff contacted the Campus Safety Department to report a student conduct violation involving alcohol in Boer/Bennink. Two students were questioned and admitted the under age consumption of alcohol. The report was sent to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. LARCENY/THEFT : BICYCLE PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : ALPHA 9/10/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/10/ and 9/10/ The Campus Safety Department took a stolen bike report from a student who had parked their white Cannondale bike in the Alpha bike rack at 3:30pm, on Monday The owner noticed the bike missing at 6:30pm the same day. The bike was not locked at the time of the theft. BURGLARY N 9/17/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/17/ and 9/17/ A Calvin Seminary student who lives at off campus Seminary housing in the 2100 block of Batchawana Street SE, discovered their slider door had been smashed out and their apartment gone through by unknown individuals. The victim contacted the Grand Rapids Police Department and filed a burglary report. 8 of
9 LARCENY/THEFT : BICYCLE PROPERTY/OTHER : WALKWAYS BURTON ST SE 9/17/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/17/ and 9/17/ Campus Safety took a report of a larceny of a bicycle from the bike racks near North Hall and Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex. The owner of the bicycle said the bike was not locked at the time of the theft. They were also unable to provide a description of the bike other than it had purple and grey spokes. The student later reported finding the bicycle near North Hall. MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : LOWER KE LOT #19 9/18/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/17/ and 9/18/ TOT-GRAND RAPIDS POLICE The Campus Safety Department took a report of a stolen vehicle from the lower Knollcrest East parking lot (Lot 19). The vehicle, a dark green Buick with Oregon license plates and a roof storage container was taken sometime between 10:00 pm and midnight Monday, September 17. The owner of the stolen vehicle also filed a motor vehicle theft report with the Grand Rapids Police Department. On , the car was located near campus and returned to the owner. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : ZETA/LAMBDA 9/19/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/16/ and 9/19/ The Campus Safety Department took a larceny from a motor vehicle report in the Lower KE Apartment Lot ( Lot 19). The vehicle had been left unlocked and items were moved around. A small amount of loose change was taken from a cup holder. The theft occurred between September 16 and September 19. PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : LOWER KE LOT #19 9/19/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/17/ and 9/19/ The Campus Safety Department took a report of an attempted larceny from a motor vehicle that occurred in the lower Knollcrest East lot (lot #19) sometime between September 17 and September 19. Items in the car had been disturbed, but nothing appeared to be taken. The owner indicated they forgot to lock their vehicle. PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : LOWER KE LOT #19 9/20/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/18/ and 9/20/ The Campus Safety Department took a report of a larceny from a motor vehicle. The theft occurred in the Knollcrest East parking lot (Lot #19) sometime between September 18 and September 20. Items were removed from the vehicle. The owner believed they locked their vehicle, however there was no sign of a forced entry into the vehicle. PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : LOWER KE LOT #19 9/20/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/16/ and 9/18/ The Campus Safety Department took a report of an attempted larceny from a motor vehicle that occurred in the lower Knollcrest East lot (lot #19) sometime between September 16 and September 18. Items in the car had been disturbed, but nothing appeared to be taken. The owner indicated they forgot to lock their vehicle. 9 of
10 CRIM DAMAGE PROP PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : BOER/BENNINK 9/26/ Incident Occurred Between: 9/26/ and 9/26/ Case #: , Campus Safety officers responded to a report of an individual breaking out the glass in the front doors of Boer Bennink Hall. Officers who responded to the scene secured the student until police and an ambulance arrived on scene. GRPD and Life Ambulance were contacted and also responded to the scene. The involved student was transported by Life Ambulance to Saint Mary's Hospital for medical treatment. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : BOER/BENNINK 9/26/ Incident Occurred Between: 9/26/ and 9/26/ Case #: , Campus Safety officers responded to a report of an individual breaking out the glass in the front doors of Boer Bennink Hall. A Campus Safety employee administered preliminary breath test and the results were forwarded to the Office of Student Conduct for further action. PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : LOWER KE LOT #19 10/7/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 10/7/ and 10/7/ Campus Safety Officers responded to the lower Knollcrest East parking lot (lot #19) to investigate a possible attempted larceny from a vehicle, after hearing a car alarm activate. Upon checking, it appeared someone had entered or attempted entry into an unlocked vehicle. Video surveillance revealed that two subjects wearing hooded sweat shirts had attempted entry and fled when the alarm sounded. The owner was notified of the attempted entry. PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : LOWER KE LOT #19 10/7/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 10/6/ and 10/7/ The Campus Safety Department took a report of an attempted larceny from a motor vehicle in Knollcrest East parking lot #19. Unknown suspects entered the unlocked vehicle and searched through the glove box and center console. Nothing was reported missing. 10 of
11 PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : LOWER KE LOT #19 10/10/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 10/3/ and 10/9/ The Campus Safety Department was notified of a larceny from a vehicle that happened at the Knollcrest East apartment complex in Lot 19 near Calvin Seminary housing (Kuyper Hall). The incident occurred sometime between October 3 and October 10 according to the victim. CRIM DAMAGE PROP PROPERTY/PARKING LOTS 3201 BURTON ST SE : EAST BELTLINE LOT # 10/11/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/30/ and 10/7/ Campus Safety took a report of a damage to property report involving a vehicle that was parked in the East Beltline lot (#)and had a dent on the hood. The damage occurred sometime between September 30 and October 7. 10/18/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 9/20/ and 9/20/ On October, the Office of Student Conduct reported that they received a sexual assault report from a student who stated they were the victim of an inappropriate sexual touching by another student whom they knew. The student reported the incident occurred in an apartment in Knollcrest East on September 20. PROPERTY/RESIDENTIAL 3201 BURTON ST SE : BEETS/VEENSTRA 11/3/ Case #: Incident Occurred Between: 11/3/ and 11/3/ A Campus Safety employee was called to assist Residence Life staff with the investigation of a possible violation of the student conduct code for alcohol in Beets Hall. Two students were administered portable breath tests and an alcohol container was confiscated. The results of the investigation were forwarded to the office of Student Conduct for further action. After not locating the phone the visitor stated they believed someone stole the phone while they were playing basketball. The victim had no idea who might have stolen their phone.
