1 "Like No Other Place on Earth" 2013 Sussex District Spring Camporee Sterling Hill Mining Museum is located on 30 Plant Street, Ogdensburg, NJ Friday, May 3 to Sunday, May 5, 2013 (rev 1) The Sterling Hill is an enduring geological mystery. It is a world-famous mineral deposit which is a Mining Museum that is a nonprofit foundation dedicated to the preservation, interpretation, understanding, and appreciation of the history of mining, mining technology, mineralogy, and geology unique to the State of New Jersey through scientific research and educational programs. This is not going to be your typical school trip, this is a Scouting adventure where our Scouts will go where the public doesn t. Have you climbed the tower that brought the ore from the mine shaft and delivered it to the train cars? How about having a campfire program with a rock background that is full of fluorescent minerals? How about camping next to an Observatory? This will be the opportune time to earn merit badge requirements for: Climbing, Emergency Preparedness, Climbing, Astronomy, Pioneering, and Geology, This event is nearby so if you need to, you can come and go to your sporting events and come back for your adventure. Cost will be $10.00 per person! Registration is online only. The DEADLINE for registration will be April 27 th. See the Sussex District calendar for more information and the link to register. Please note: Be sure to remove any trash, etc. from your area before departing. Camping: Camp site assigned at check-in. Your unit MUST check in at the Camporee HQ - before setting up camp. Each camping area will be managed by the Camporee staff. The unit should properly mark their site with their unit s flag. Be sure to follow the rules in The Guide to Safe Scouting. Follow the Leave No Trace Philosophy while camping. Respect other units around you. We will be camping in a field. It is suggested that each unit provide their own water to start off. Cooking by propane stove only. No campfires. Be sure to have in public view a first aid kit and fire extinguisher in your site. Scouts and Scouters should show respect in using the bathrooms. NO trailers or vehicles will be allowed to park at the camp site unless noted. See following parking rules. Grey Water and Trash: Garbage follow the bring in take out philosophy and do not leave garbage in your camping area. Be sure to LEAVE NO TRACE. All grey water should be disposed of properly. Meals: All units will be responsible for their own meals for this event. Religious Service We will be conducting a short Scouts Own Service before the Campfire. Scout uniforms should be worn throughout program time and for both the Campfire and Scouts Own Service. Page 2 of 6

3 Health, Safety, and Identification: Since this is a mining area, extreme attention must be given to ALL posted signs mounted throughout the Park. Follow the buddy system! A Health and Safety officer will be on staff to make sure all health regulations are followed. Camp sites will be inspected. All injuries should be reported to staff. Scoutmasters are to fill out incident reports and submit them to council. The closest hospitals to Sterling Hill are Newton Medical Center, 175 High Street (Route 94), Newton or Saint Clare's Hospital/Sussex, 20 Walnut Street, Sussex, NJ In case of inclement weather, please follow the direction of the staff. Lighting storms units should seek protection in buildings or under pavilions. Lost Scouts! Upon notification of a lost Scout, an alert will be sent to all staff members. Lost and found will be at the Camporee Headquarters. We will follow the Guide to Safe Scouting: Awards: All units will receive a Camporee participation ribbon and each Scout will receive a patch. Marking and Stations: The camporee locations will be well marked with signage to ensure that our Scouts can find the different events. Parking & Traffic: 1 All vehicles will park in the camp s parking lot 2 Each vehicle will post the owner s contact information on the dash. Please follow all parking rules. 3 Carpooling is imperative. Please limit the number of vehicles parking at the event as much as possible. Unit Permission Slips: To attend this event, be sure you have the Scout s parent(s) or guardian s permission. For us to properly advertise this camporee and all future events, we are asking that each unit provide the photo release indicated on the last page on your unit s permission slips. Rosters and Tour Plan: To check in, each unit is required to submit 2 copies of their roster and an approved copy of the tour plan for out-of-council units. No exceptions. Troop Equipment List: NO TRAILERS will be allowed to the site. We will have a drop off area set up as close to the camping area to bring your gear into camp. Please remember that this is only a weekend event. What you bring is what you will have to carry in to your site. NO GROUND fires will be allowed. Use propane stoves for cooking of your meals. Uniforms: Scouts should be in Class "A" uniforms throughout the program time, Scouts Own, and the Campfire program. Campfire: Each troop should provide either a song or a skit for the campfire. These should be appropriate for Webelos Scouts. All songs and skits will be reviewed prior to the campfire. Page 3 of 6

4 Rules: The Scout Law, Promise, and Oath are the rules that we follow. Leader Notes: The Scout activities consist of full access to the entire Sterling Hill Museums and properties. Our Scouts will be able to visit places that the general public usually does not see. We are also going to be camping in a field area and our Scouts will be able to see portions of the rock glow with special lighting. We must also monitor OUR Scouts when climbing, being sure that we are following the Guide to Safe Scouting. We ask that in your troop meetings prior to this event to cover safety, the buddy system, and also explain that there may be areas that they will be visiting that maybe will have a lack of light. It is important that all of Scouts and Scouters carry flashlights at all times. Also, since we are visitors in a public area, we are asking that our Scouts wear their Scout Class A uniform throughout the day. Planned Weekend Program: Zobel Exhibit Hall - The Zobel Exhibit Hall contains more than 20,000 mining-related items on display, including equipment used for explosives, moving and crushing ore, mine ventilation, mine lighting, and laboratory study of the ores. Also featured are displays of the local fluorescent minerals, and large mineral samples out in the open, meant to be touched. Underground Mine - A 1,300-ft underground walking tour through the Sterling Hill mine is a featured part of the tour. Within the mine passages are numerous pieces of equipment used while the mine was in operation, plus exhibits on the mining process. Visitors will see the lamp room, the shaft station, mine galleries dating to the 1830's, and much more. Outdoor Mining & Art Exhibits- Numerous items of mining-related equipment are scattered about the grounds at Sterling Hill. Here you will see sinking buckets, stamp mills, sheave wheels, crushers, ball mills, drum hoists, compressors, track drills, ore cars, and more. Look around and you will also see bronze sculptures depicting various facets of a miner's life. Visitors are welcome to browse the grounds adjacent to our main parking lot to view these items. Rock Discovery Center- The Rock Discovery Center is an outdoor area where children learn about the uses of various rock types that are quarried in our region, and then collect a specimen of each rock type to take home with them. Economically important rock types such as coal, slate, marble, and basalt are included in this exercise. Fossil Discovery Center- New to Sterling Hill, the Fossil Discovery Center helps our young visitors learn about fossils by digging for them in a large sand box and then taking them home. An instructor will be on hand to tell you what the fossils are, when they lived, in what environments they grew, and how they went about their lives. Thomas S. Warren Museum of Fluorescence-Four rooms totaling nearly 1,800 square feet of exhibit space are devoted to displays of fluorescent minerals, fossils, gemstones, carvings, and everyday objects. The museum includes more than two dozen exhibits, nearly all of which explore some topical theme of fluorescence. A display of antique ultraviolet lights is also on view. Ellis Astronomical Observatory - Dark skies and powerful telescopes combine at Sterling Hill for members of our Astronomy Group to view the Moon, planets, distant galaxies, and planetary nebulae in the comfort of a covered observatory dome. On hand are a 20-inch reflector telescope, a 12.5-inch reflector, and a Hydrogen-Alpha telescope for viewing the Sun. Page 4 of 6

5 Collections & Archives- The Sterling Hill Mining Museum maintains collections of mining equipment, mining artifacts, laboratory and assay equipment, ores, minerals, mining-related art, and presentation memorabilia of the New Jersey Zinc Company. We also house a library and an archive of historic mining maps. Historic Mine Structures -Nearly all of the buildings that were in use while the mine was in production have been kept in good repair and are either part of the museum or are slated for incorporation into the museum in the future. Times of construction of these buildings, plus the headframe and conveyor system range from 1913 to Gift Shop & Snack Bar - The gift shop is stocked with inexpensive items for children and teachers, including a large selection of minerals and rocks priced at $3 or less. We also offer jewelry, books, mining memorabilia, and a selection of ultraviolet lamps. The adjacent snack bar and tables are provided for the convenience of our visitors. Also Help Wanted of Scouts! Chaplain's Aides Need four to six Scouts to help planning and presenting the non-denominational church service in the evening. Flag Ceremony Need two sets of two Scouts in full dress uniform to raise and lower the flags for our opening and closing ceremonies. RULES FOR ACCEPTANCE AND PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAMS Rules for acceptance and participation in the programs are the same for everyone without regard to race, color, national origin, or handicap. TAX DEDUCTIBLE PORTION All amounts in excess of $.0.00 per ticket may be claimed as tax deductible. CANCELLATION POLICY In all programs offered by the Patriots Path Council, BSA, a great deal of planning and purchasing takes place well in advance. These plans include, but are not limited to, staff, food, program materials, patches and awards, rental and purchase of equipment, and in some cases, items of clothing such as T-shirts that are given as part of a program fee. When an individual or group makes a reservation for an activity or program, these items are included in ordering of materials and staffing for that event. Page 5 of 6

6 Refunds: Individuals or groups that cancel a program reservation 30 days prior to the date of the event will receive a refund of fees paid, less a 15% administrative charge. No refunds will be made after the 30 day cancellation deadline, unless there is a medical or other emergency.
