Box 4001 Newark OH facebook.com/newarkskiclub MAY HIGHLIGHTS Board Member Thank Yous Sun Valley Ski Trip Summer Social Hours OVSC Spain Trip Summer Picnic Info WELCOME & THANK YOU Wow! We the outgoing Board would like to give a warm WELCOME to the members who have stepped up & joined the next Board: Vice-President: Tim Crowley Secretary: Elaine Pimental Membership: Kay Morrison VP At-Large: Tom Brubaker Beth Ann Swick Committing your time and energy to ensuring the health and well-being of this club into the next year (or two, in some cases) is highly welcomed and sincerely appreciated. This club cannot work without the volunteering of its members to the necessary positions on the Board; the fun stops when there is no one working behind the scenes. That is why I can t wait to spend time with each of you. THANK YOU! Christian Prez Sez. Inside this Issue Next Meeting Tuesday, June 6th Harbor Hills C.C. 244 Freeman Memorial Dr. Hebron, OH pm - 10 pm Well I m all healed up and with the warmer weather I m getting a few miles in on my bike. I haven t been riding as much as I would like to, but I have been getting out a few times a week between the showers. I went to Louisville to the OVSC summit and had a good time meeting with the other clubs and discussing common problems all the clubs are encountering. I was the only one there from Newark and shared a room with Dan Pack who had joined us on the Big Sky trip. It wasn t all business; we enjoyed Live on 4th Street both Friday and Saturday nights, a bike ride east of the city on Saturday morning, dinner Saturday night, and breakfast Sunday morning. I was able to talk with the representative from Sun Valley about the trip next year, and Megan was there from Banff telling us all about the extended season they were having. I heard there was a good turnout for the Social Hour in May. Sorry I didn t make it. I got out to Buckeye Lake last weekend and it was nice to see the boats out in the water again. I want to again thank the resigning board members and the great work they did for the club. Hope to see you all at the June meeting. Tom Schmidt Prez Sez.. & New Board Members 1 THANK YOU for EVERYTHING to outgoing board members 2 Summer Social Hours with a Thanks from Nancy & Roy 2 Membership Birthdays & From the Membership Director 3 OVSC Trip to Granada & the Costa del Sol, Spain 3 Sun Valley Ski Trip & the annual Summer Picnic 4 From the Activities Desk 5 Calendar of Events, Pix, Payment Coupon & Board Info 5 June & July Calendars 6
2 Page 2 T HE I N S I DE E DG ET HE I N S I DE Page E DG E2 THANK YOU for EVERYTHING As usual at this time of year, we say a heartfelt THANK YOU to those Board members who have chosen to step down from their positions and hand the reigns of this club off to someone else (please see page 1 for that list). This year we have 3 members returning to the general membership: Mark Weiser, Linda Weiler, and Roy Berman. It has been a great honor, joy, and privilege to work through the thoughts, questions, ideas, problems, solutions, and humor with these people over the past few years. Linda graciously stepped up and took over Secretary for three years, and she has done a wonderful job keeping everything straight. Roy joined the Board 4 years ago as a VP-at-Large, and it is thanks to his tireless work and incredible skill that the annual Sh-Sh-Shilent auction has become such a success. Finally, Mark has truly done a tour of the Board: he started as a VP-at-large 5 years ago during the Erndt administration, moved up to Vice President, built his own 2 year presidential administration, and returned for another year at VP to help Tom Schmidt s current administration. Please, when you speak to these wonderful members over the next few meetings, thank them for helping out because I cannot thank them enough for putting in their time and effort. THANK YOU for EVERYTHING!! SUMMER SOCIAL HOURS Roy & I would like to thank everyone that came out to Buckeye Lake Pizza Cottage on the 19th in spite of the heavy rains. It was fun to see you all there, and we are looking forward to seeing you at the next two Social Hours! Nancy Channell On Friday, June 9th we will meet at 6pm at the beautiful Buckeye Lake Winery (13750 Rosewood Rd., Thornville). The winery sits right on the lake, and since there is more water in the lake, it ll be fun sitting outdoors and enjoying the lake while we enjoy each other and some good food and wine. Of course, if the weather is not good, there is room on the inside. They have a large, really good menu of salads, soups, appetizers, sandwiches, and full dinners. Check their website out at Come enjoy a great meal and have fun with all your friends at the Newark Ski Club. Invite your friends and maybe they will join once they see how much fun we have. On Saturday, August 19th, we will gather around 4:30pm at the beautiful Indian Bear Winery (3483 McCarment Rd., Walhonding). This place has two stories with balconies and seating on a lovely property that includes 2 lodges and cabins. You can taste some of the best wine made in Ohio from their own vines. There is a great menu, numerous wines, a few craft beers, and even wine slushies! Check them out at They ll have live music and are open until 10pm.
3 Page 3 THE INSIDE EDGE THE INSIDE Page EDGE 3 From the Membership Director: The New Membership Form & the Renewal Form as well as the Payment Coupon (which is on the bottom of page 5) will need to be filled by any new members joining the club. You may also print up, fill out, and bring with you the Renewal Form to the September Membership Renewal Meeting, or you may fill out these forms, which will be made available, at that meeting. We ask for your diligence and accuracy in completion of the correct forms to obtain the current NSC membership card. Your card is your ID to obtain ski discounts at participating businesses and to partake in discounted ski and social events. This year s picnic will be held at Stone Crest Winery in Frazeysburg. The club will be providing the meat. What we want y all to bring is an appetizer, side dish, or a desert; a desire to eat; and a festive summery mood all ready to get your picnic on! Stone Crest offers a great selection of wines, wine slushies, Pepsi products, and waters to ensure you have the drink selection of your choice. Every year since I joined the club, the summer picnic has been an amazingly fun time with a stupendous turnout. So, don t let this event (which your dues pay for) pass you by.you ll regret not spending your day with friends, food, wine, and frivolity at the Annual NSC Summer Picnic! SUN VALLEY SKI TRIP MARCH 3-10, 2018 We have decided to join the OVSC for next year s Western ski trip. We will be going to Sun Valley, Idaho! So for everyone who has this great ski resort on your Bucket List, you re welcome. Janie Snyder has graciously tentatively agreed to be the Trip Leader. Our club will be staying in the 2 and 3-bedroom condos, and the price will be around $1,600. The trip will take place March 3-10, 2018, which is set in stone. This will include airfare, ground transportation, 5 days of lift tickets, welcome reception, and a few other perks and amenities (you know, the stuff that makes taking a trip with this club ever so nice). Please look at your schedule and PEN this wonderful trip into it. We will have a sign up sheet and ask for a $50 deposit at the Summer Picnic Meeting. This will be another once-in-a-greatwhile trip that should not be missed if you love to ski and have fun!
